5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good stuff, October 26, 2011
By vegassubscribe
Went for the UN55 over the UN54 for the all aluminum parts. Smooth as butta and dirt cheap, feels like a new bike. Never changed a bottom bracket before and the instructions say to grease the threads, which seemed screwy to me, but I did it anyway and sure enough they work their way out on the first ride. I removed the grease and reinstalled. No other problems so far. You will also need the Park Tool Crank Puller - CCP-22 and Park Tool BBT-22 Shimano Sealed Cartridge Bottom Bracket Tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good part for a great price, February 25, 2012
By Dee R. Kellan (Moberly, MO)
I noticed some popping and cracking on my Redline Monocog a few months after I bought it. Turns out the bottom bracket was bad, seems to be common with that bike. Never replaced a bottom bracket before, so I checked out the videos on youtube, saw it wasn't too hard, bought this bottom bracket and the Park tools from Amazon.com and did the work myself. Seriously, it took less than an hour total. If you have any doubts whatsoever about this part, just look up the how to videos on youtube and rest assured you CAN replace your own BB. The UN55 works great, is smooth and was easy to install. Now my bike rides better than it did brand new. I've had it for about 6 months now and it's still working fine. If you are unsure about the exact size of your BB, use Sheldon Brown's web page and there's a handy reference sheet. Also the spec sheet will list it online if you websearch your bike model. Or you can do what I did, and use a crank puller (amazon.com) and pull off your cranks, then use the BB tool (amazon.com) to remove your old defective BB and see what's printed on the side of it. I think I paid less than $20 for this part, and it works so well it will most likely migrate to my next commuter bike as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Shimano UN55, February 10, 2012
By Ian (Columbus, Ohio)
I purchased this BB for my old 80s Fuji when the old loose bearing one started having some issues. I was very hesitant to switch to the newer cartridge after hearing mixed reviews on them, but since I ride this bike in all weather to and from work I liked the idea of having a sealed bearing you don't have to re-grease. Once I measured the old BB closely I decided on the UN55 over the UN54 because it has all aluminum parts. After installing I have been extremely satisfied. It is very smooth and much cheaper than the ones at my LBS. I would certainly purchase this item again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent replacement, April 17, 2012
By Brice (TALLAHASSEE, FL, US)
I have a 1990 (something) Diamondback 21 speed mountain bike. For some reason the BB on that bike was binding and not working very well at all. After replacing the old unit with this one it was wonderful. There is no noise at all now when I turn the pedals. I am not a pro but just a weekend cyclist but I know quality as it is compared to what I had before.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Old school shimano still made nice, February 5, 2012

for the money, you are going to be heard pressed to beat the quality of this bottom bracket. it operates smooth without play and is a perfect replacement for square taper style.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Smooth., May 21, 2012
By DAN SANDERS
This replaced the bottom bracket off an early 90's Raleigh that had loose unsealed bearings.

The difference is night and day. Before I could feel the bearings through the crank, now I can feel them at all.

Easy to install too, although I had to buy the tool to screw it in, which cost more than the bracket...
