Shimano Rear Derailleur, April 17, 2011
By Gator1
|
|
Replaced entire drivetrain on my old mountain bike (7-spd): old Shimano Altus C10 rear derailleur was replaced with this one. Right price and works perfectly. Installed it myself, but had to take it in to the local bike shop for proper adjustment - but that's a factor of the mechanic installing it than the item itself, and I knew that going in (there are alot of mechanical things I can do...derailleur adjustments aren't one of them). But after adjusted by the guys with the know-how, it works perfectly.

Great bargain, August 12, 2011

I'd say I'm a biking hobbyist without a huge knowledge of products, and although this is one of shimano's more bottom end sets, but it performs perfectly on my mountain bike. I installed this and the matching front derailleur and they took almost no set up before i was shifting perfectly and I'm sure with shimano's reliability it will last for years. Huge improvement over the stock derailleur. Highly recommend!!!

Tough and reliable,, August 17, 2011

I love rear and front derailleur from Alivio. The price is low, but it always delivers a great shifting. I like the gear shifters, but not the integrated one.

Amazing Rear Derailleur, August 10, 2011
By DAN (STL)
|
|
This was an amazing rear derailleur..... before it broke. My second time out riding after installing this derailleur, a stick jumped up and into the spokes of my rear wheel and grabbed the derailleur on the way up. Needless to say, any derailleur will break if you put enough force on it in the wrong way, and that is exactly what happened, it wasn't the derailleurs fault that it broke, but rather the fact that any derailleur would have with that much force on it. But it did work amazingly smooth before it broke.

Nice derailleur!, January 19, 2011
By Wes (Iowa)

It's not overly big and bulky....looks good....shifts well and wasn't hard to adjust. It also works for the larger sprockets. I have it with an 11-32t cassette and it works perfectly. And yes, great price....I'm buying another.

Can be made to fit a Wall*Mart bike, May 20, 2012
By Chief Redelk (Dubberly, La)

I searched all the blogs but NO ONE could tell me how to hang this type of derailleur on a cheap bike...
FINALLY,,, I found a hanger made by Shimano especially for cheap bikes... The url below shows the proper hanger...It should be sold right on the same page as the derailleur but that would make our lives to simple. They have no clue that some of us guys would like a better derailleur than the stuff we got with our cheap bikes...
< http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0048UFRME/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 > .
I was taught that at every opportunity, I should make life better for others.. I hope this saves YOU the much trouble I went through....Not everyone buys high dollar bikes but does like to put good parts on the cheap ones, it seems the sellers have no clue.
IF Shimano would tell more people about this easy fix I bet MORE cheap bikes would have better parts. Because I had to go through hell to find this part I gave this review 4 stars..
IF they had made an effort to help me find this part I would have given it 5 stars.. I blame the seller...People on the net are posting, "How do I make a good derailleur fit a cheap bike" the answer they get IS NOT THIS ONE...Lets give the little some help..
Bless you, Chief

Works Great - Looks Good Too!, October 17, 2011

Using this on a road bike with bar end 8-speed indexing shifters (Shimano.) It works great and is very smooth operating. I have not had to adjust it once, after and initial correction after a week of breaking in all new components.

The derailleur I ordered from Amazon is the same as the original on the bike. It works fine and I'm satisfied with it and Amazon. The price was the most competitive I could find.

Nice inexpensive upgrade from cheaper parts, July 11, 2011
By Bryan Eckert (Maryland, USA)
|
|
Upgrade from the crap tourney that came on my bike.
Not the "shadow" design, but doesn't stick out much. Heavy, but a featherweight compared to the one it replaced (a tourney).
Shifts are nice and precise, although I'm sure they'll improve once I get my Shimano freewheel.
Installed and adjusted in about 5 minutes, and went out and slugged it through a bunch of mud. Didn't skip a beat. Not the high end, but a nice upgrade and seems like it will last a long time.
Glad I bought it!

Not durable enough for an avid biker, December 1, 2010
By Liliana (Southern Ca, USA)
|

It looks very nice and shifts precisely. This is the third one I have owned and the others have not lasted over 6 months. This is definitely the best price. Any other place the price is from 40 to 50 dollars. (This review written by my 13 1/2 year old.)

Replaced 2005 Altus, night and day shifting, October 28, 2011
By Benvolks
|
|
I didn't get my alivio derailleur here on amazon, i picked mine up used with a cassette and chain for a couple bucks. It is completely different riding with this in comparison to my 2005 Altus. Shifts fast and crisp. Every once in a while i get a mis-shift, but it is quick to correct itself. For the money, i would have to say it is the best value derailleur you can buy. If your sick of your derailleur taking it's sweet time to get into gear, or mis-shifting and tripping all over itself trying to get you into the correct gear, then this is the fix. I can even crank my grip shifters a couple gears and this thing doesn't skip a beat. I have a 2011 105 group on my trek and this derailleur provides faster shifting, although not as tidy and perfect as the 105. BUY ONE!

Shimano Alivio on Mongoose, October 10, 2011
By Jude Dude
|
|
Fabricated a new rear derailleur drop-down for our Mongoose Blackcomb and decided to try the less expensive Alivio instead of Deore since we have been destroying derailleurs recently. Works fine on the 3x8 speed Blackcomb with some adjustment on cable length.

Excellent Derailleur for the Price, September 18, 2011
By Danorou
|
|
Quick install, smooth operation. If you have some experience with derailleurs, it will take all of 10 minutes for you to take off the chain and uninstall the old derailleur, and install this on. Adjusting it takes a little bit of work, but a little bit of patience can save you a great deal of frustration later.

Shimano makes good stuff. This is exactly as I expected...Alvio's not top of line, but I didn't want to spend a fortune on my upgrade. Works great. Inexpensive to replace if I break it. Easy to install.

For the price, this is a pretty nice long-cage derailleur, April 16, 2012
By Have Raleigh, will travel (Chicago)
|
|
This derailleur does a great job along side of Tiagra or Sora driveline components when you need a long-cage to be compatible with a large wide-ratio mountain cassette like a 32-tooth largest-cog.
I'm not sure about off-road durability but it works well for CX and the mud. I haven't whacked it really hard yet but it does a great job on the road and shifts VERY smoothly and crisply on an 8-speed system.
I suppose if you are using this for hard-core MTB use it might not hold up -but for the road or even some light single-track this does a great job. It's not a Deore LX or XT or better. It's lower down on the Shimano hierarchy -it is also a LOT cheaper. With Shimano stuff you have to pay to play on the top levels. This isn't the top level -but neither it is a very high price. It's not bottom-level either. It's a HECK of a lot better than Altus or even Acera and not much more money.
4-stars. No need to trash this for being what it isn't designed to be or unfairly compare it to other MTB derailleurs that are 3-8 times as much $$$.
