1.0 out of 5 stars.  These Bells are cheap....cheap.....cheap., October 2, 2010
By Packerette
The plastic lever to "Ping" the bell is already stretched out, and will undoubtedly break soon as one must really push down hard on it in order to get it to bounce back onto the bell and make it "Ping". You only get one little "Ping" out of it per push, which is hardly enough noise to notify an oncoming bike or person you might be riding behind. They are not strap on as one might think with a strap and/or velcro. It is just formed plastic that you stretch open and push onto your bike frame or handlebars. There is no adjustment or screw as pictured in other Zafal ads for this product with Niagara. No reason to send it back as the shipping is not refundable and is just as much as your total order. I ordered three of these for our bikes because they are Zefal bikes, but I will just donate them instead of using them. They are junk for a serious or safety minded bicycle rider.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't waste your money on this, December 3, 2010
By Mondoman (Seattle, WA)
I bought this as a basic bell to warn pedestrians of my approach. Even at a cheap price, I thought I couldn't go wrong with Zefal quality; boy, was I wrong!

As others have written here, the fundamental flaw is that the striker arm is made of plastic, with no spring. Function of the bell depends on this plastic's springiness, which quickly vanishes. Mine lasted less than 10 rides before becoming completely unusable.

Get a proper bell that includes a metal spring as part of the striker mechanism!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  LOUD!!!, January 30, 2010
By Manglares (Arlington, VA USA)
I commute daily on bike paths with plenty of walkers, joggers, and other cyclists. A good bell is far more effective than a vocal alert. People know that a bell announces a bike, and they expect it on their left (in the US).

This is overall the best bell I've ever used. It has an exceptionally clear, loud ring. This week, after about 6 years of daily commuting using this bell (an estimated 20-30,000 rings), the plastic for the clapper (pinger?) finally broke, albeit in very cold weather.

I'm now going to buy another, as I've never heard another with sound quality so desirable. I had been wondering when the plastic would break, knowing that the material could only flex so many times. I advise Zefal to explore some way to strengthen this weak point on an otherwise fantastic product.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Disposable plastic junk, November 6, 2010
By W. Dormann
The spring action for the hammer is created by bending plastic. After only a few uses, it will stretch out and no longer function. Absolute garbage.
