Overall a success.., September 5, 2010
By Bob Weaver (Salt Lake City, UT)
|

Overall this is a great rack and seems quite sturdy. I use it to carry a trunk bag with clothes and misc things for commuting to work every day.
The main tubing is thick and feels strong. It mounted perfectly on my 1992 Specialized Rockhopper Comp. As others have mentioned, your frame needs to have the proper braze-ons, or as some have called them "holes", for the mounting screws. If it's your first rack, it might take a little while to get things all lined up and tightened down, but it mounts like 99% of the other racks out there. Should be no surprises.
The whole rack is aluminum and nice and light, but being aluminum it's a little soft. If you're not careful, you can mash up the top deck a little with the screws. The only washers included with the hardware are for the underside. I'd recommend adding an additional washer under the head of the deck screws to keep the screw head from digging into the soft material as you tighten it down.
All said, I'm very happy with the rack. Especially for the price.. Can't be beat.
*** 08MAY2011 UPDATE ***
I recently took this rack on a short multi-day ride (about 380 miles) with a couple of panniers hanging off it and a medium-sized trunk bag on top. The pannier's weighed-in at around 30-35 lbs and the trunk bag carried around 5 lbs (mostly food stuff). The route was about 60% paved highways and 40% mostly graded dirt/gravel roads. The rack held up fine and none of the mounting hardware came loose on the trip.
Some racks have a little more of a rear support bar/framework for panniers to rest against. I was a little worried with this rack that my panniers might bounce into the rear wheel spokes, but they didn't. I'm super happy with this little rack, especially after putting it through a bit of a workout. I'll probably pick up another to keep in the garage as a spare for when this one wears out.

Bike rack: basic, sturdy and light, October 21, 2010
By Altair
|
|
I have a small ladies' road bike and was trying to find a rack that would fit a 24 inch (or smaller) wheel. I decided on this rack because of the adjustable legs, and it did fit my bike perfectly with the lowest height.
Assembly was relatively simple, though instructions of the box was not very clear. The rack came with enough screws, washers and bolts to mount on a bike that has braze-on eyelets (little holes on the frame). My little bike didn't have two of the eyelets I needed at the top of the seat stay so I improvised with P-clips and more nuts and bolts from a hardware store. It was easy enough, and very cheap too. My doubts about mounting with these clips was that it was going to be flimsy, but it seemed fairly solid after all the tightening. After multiple uses of the bike with the rack, carting things like (a full load of) groceries or books, it has proven to be reliable and sturdy. It is surprisingly light too, probably because of the aluminum tubing.
Overall a great rack that does it's job pretty well, and probably worth much more than what you'll pay for!

Good Rack But Not An Easy Installation, April 10, 2011
By MH2KE (Northwest CT USA)
|
|
The rack is sturdy and lightweight, but installation takes some effort. The instructions are vague, I had to drill some holes to get the rack to align properly (horizontal), and it took a trip to the hardware store to buy missing nuts for the screws that come with the rack. All of this was annoying, but not a deal breaker. I'm happy with the end result, but if you're not mechanically inclined, forget it.

Delta Cycle Ultra rack worth the dollars and effort, April 20, 2011
By bopfan (Columbus, OH)
|
|
Well packaged, arrived from Amazon in perfect condition. Installation instructions were adequate and the package included some of the necessary installation hardware. Installation was relatively easy, it did involve some moderate bending of the support arms to reach the fittings on my particular bike and to help level the unit but no big issues. My guess is that just about everyone will have to bend those arms a bit to adapt to the specific frame geometry of their bike. The bending should not compromise the integrity of the support arms: you will only be bending them once to align them with your frame. A trip to my local hardware store was necessary to purchase two small clamps so that upper support arms could be attached to the seat stays. I found a pair of rubberized clamps in the electrical department which actually work perfectly, the rubber bands on the clamps protect the frame and they look as if they came with the rack. If your bike has full braze-ons for a rack then hunting for clamps is a non-issue. For some crazy reason my bike had braze-ons for the lower support arms (near the drop outs) but none on the seat stays. The rack itself appears to be fairly well constructed, sturdy enough for light loads held on with a bungie or, in my case, a medium sized trunk bag. There is a tab on the back of the rack so that you can attach a tail light. You could use a set of light duty panniers on the rack but if you are into serious touring this would probably not be your first choice for a rack. I have been using it for a month or two and it is now time to check all of the fittings to insure that nothing has worked its way loose. Won't be any issues with how the rack attaches to the bike itself; but there is some minor assembly required for the rack (attaching platform to rack frame) and these nuts could work loose over time. No big deal but it would be prudent to check ALL of the fittings on your bike regularly. The price from Amazon was very competitive and rivaled most online bike shops. I would recommend this rack to others looking for a moderate priced light duty rack.

Eh., March 30, 2011
By Khoanyneosr

It was alright, I don't want to tell you not to buy it. It held up pretty good, for the price it's listed at it's a great product. It lasted for about three weeks on my bike, then my brother picked it up by the rack and it broke. The metal that holds the rack on the bike isn't the highest quality of metal if it can snap like a twig but I thought it was okay.

Great Rack - Just Needed A Little Tweaking, March 19, 2011
By HSPS2 (Washington State)
|
|
Just got the rack installed and I'm very happy with it even though it required some tweaking and an extra hour of my time. It's sturdy! I wouldn't hesitate to load it up to the 40 pound limit mentioned in the Amazon product description. In fact the packaging for mine said 60 lbs. Even though this is intended as a universal rack (for just about any bike with "braze-ons" on the stays), I realized immediately that I would have to do some extra engineering and physical modifications to make it a good fit on my bike (see pictures marked "A"). This is probably true to some extent for most generic racks. Apparently, my braze-ons are further apart and lower than what this rack was designed to fit. So after some thinking, I cut off the excess/unncessary 4-5 inches from the two front supports and used one of those pieces as a cross piece that I bolted to the underside of the top face of the rack using existing holes. That allowed me to then attach the two front supports to the cross piece instead of the intended mounting locations on the top face which were too close together for my bike. (I may add a second cross piece for added strength, but it probably doesn't need it.) I also added some of my own washers for the top side as recommended by another reviewer (thanks Bob Weaver) to avoid dimpling or damaging the surface of the rack.
So my only criticism for Delta is that they should add a few more parts or add some additional flexibility into their design for those occasions where some modifications are necessary to make the rack fit (thus 4 stars instead of 5). But this is a great rack and anyone with average mechanical aptitude can figure out a way to make it fit well on most bikes. Don't fret! By the way, I haven't noticed any problems with peeling or chipping paint as noted by another reviewer. Mine appears to have a tough finish.

Great bike rack minor set backs, November 10, 2010

Overall this Bike rack is great. The price is affordable and it does its job very well. It is very versatile. The only problem I have with it is the paint job. Its kind of cheap. The paint chips right off. Other than that its a good buy. (Not too heavy duty though)

Delta MegaRack Ultra: Lackluster, even for the price, May 26, 2011
By Harlan Dalzell (Stewart, OH United States)
|
|
I habitually buy on the cheap (if there's a good version of something, there's almost certainly a good inexpensive version of it), but this one really didn't pay off. First, I had to pick up an automotive hose clamp to attach the rack to the seat tube--no big deal. Then, it turns out one of the mounting nuts gets is the way of the chain when shifting to my smallest sprocket, so I lose two gears--that's life with old, French road bikes. But the real disappointment came when I drove 1,100 miles this week with my bike on the back of my car on the Allen Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack (which performed beautifully for the price). Evidently the force of the wind on the milk crate I had ziptied to the MegaRack caused the rack to eject a bolt from one of the struts (which also holds the adjustable arm down by the rear axle) and the arm on the opposite side snapped. I guess I'm just glad I didn't have anything valuable, heavy, or difficult to pick up off the road when this thing catastrophically failed. In other words, the Delta MegaRack Ultra is just more trouble than it's worth. Again, I understand the impulse to save a few bucks up front--I really do--but it's just not worth it. Buy something sturdier.

Sturdy rack, weak reflector/light mount, December 3, 2011
By RW (San Francisco, CA United States)
|
|
The rack itself is great - seems pretty sturdy and was easy to install. I'm not impressed with the reflector/light mount on the back, it's very thin sheet metal which is easy to knock out of place accidentally leaving your light shining to the side or up to the sky without realizing it. Also the light tends to bounce around and vibrate a lot.
**UPDATE**
I'm revising my review rating down to 2 stars because the flimsy taillight mount broke completely off. I was biking home one night and heard a clatter behind me, I looked back to see my taillight on the ground the and batteries rolling across the road. I figured it came unscrewed from the mount, until I got home and found that it was still securely screwed to the mount, but the thin sheet metal mount had snapped completely off.
So I was stuck cycling home in the dark with no taillight or rear reflector.

I had to do a little work (drilling and tapping) to get this rack mounted. It didnt come with all the hardware I needed to mount it but when I got it mounted it is a great rack. Seems much stronger then the rack on my other bike at half the price. I highly recommend this rack and Ill buy it again for one of my other bikes.

Some Critical Part is not Included!, September 24, 2011
By SkyWalker

The rack frame is made of very lightweight but rigid aluminum tube. The adjustable legs and connector arms
are made of steel. This is a good quality rack with stainless teel nuts and bolts. A 4mm allen wrench is
included to help you with the installation. The installation is good and the adjustable legs and connector
arms make it possible to fit most bikes.
However one thing that make me very mad about this product is that the Delta frame clamps (MR1030 or MR1040
for oversize) is not included there is not mention of this in the product description. So when you receive
this product, you may found that you can not install this untill you order the missing clamps and that means
you have a week for the stupid clamps to arrive.
I have to ask--WHAT ARE THEY THINKING??? --- What is accomplished by not including the Delta frame clamps?
except to upset the consumer? Why can't they save time by mention in the production description and say--
"hey if you own a delta frame bike you must order this clamps with this product". That would save me a lot
of time. Is it too much to expect that????---That's why the three *only
Here are some dimensions:
The rack seat area is about 12.5" by 5"
The rack fix heigh is 13" but the steel legs has three threaded holes that make it possible to adjust the
heigh to about 3" or 4" more.
The adjustable length of the steel connector arms is about 8" and it has three levels of adjustment.

Needed tweaking for my bike, August 25, 2011
By Katie
|
|
The rack seems strong and nice. I put it on my bike today, but I had to do some tweaking to get it to fit. I have a woman's bike with a low rear fork, so the mounting brackets had to get bent. I used a vice to do this or you could use pliers. Then the rack connected perfectly from there! I installed a crate to the rack, and we'll see how it works with carrying groceries and such. Overall I am happy with what i got for how much I paid. I am going to upload photos (my bike is red and white) so check it out!

Thanks for not enough parts!, August 11, 2011
By Sean H.
|
|
For starters, this rack is well constructed, light, and looks great. This is why I gave it three stars. I don't know any more than that because it's not on my bike yet. And it won't be until I get back from the hardware store.
It's not on my bike yet for one reason. They don't provide all the hardware necessary for mounting it. IF you have holes in the right places of the frame of your bike AND they're the right size AND they're threaded the same as the bolts this comes with, you're good to go. If not, you'll notice "Optional Delta frame clamps available separately." on the package. You'll need those to connect the top supports. Also for the bolts that attach at the bottom near your back wheel, they don't bother to include washers or nuts.
Kind of nice that they'd inconvenience a large segment of their customers by making them find out upon receiving the item that they then can't use the product until they buy MORE stuff AND take a trip to the hardware store for washers and nuts.
I really want to like this rack. I even think I may like it quite a bit once I get all the "optional" hardware necessary to use it at all. But I won't be purchasing another Delta product purely due to their disregard for customer satisfaction in the hopes of saving a few cents per unit.
Should you get this rack? Probably! Just factor in the price of the brackets you'll need ($7 on the amazon product page I've got open in another tab!) and the inconvenience of having to go buy your own washers and nuts.

Best rack for the buck, July 3, 2011
By Rory A. Siebert (Lincoln, Nebraska, US)
|
|
What can I say, the rack is light, has all the hardware to adjust it to any bike and does what it should with out breaking the bank. Holds my nice rear cargo bag or what ever else I can strap to it.
I don't know why you'd pay more just for a name when this rack is GOOD quality, light weight and just as tough/useful as brands that cost 3 times as much.
This is acutually my 2nd one and I couldn't be happier. For someone that actually carries stuff or needs a rear rack for their bike bag, spend it on this one. I'd get another one in a heart beat if I had another bike in need of one. Highly recommended.

Good but installation takes a while, June 27, 2011
By jjniss
|
|
Light and sturdy but be prepared for an hour or two of installation. Understandable really because the design has to be generic enough to fit on most bikes. I had to bend the horizontal brackets that attach to the frame just under the seat.
Looks like however that the brackets are made to bend just for that purpose. Bending them though has no effect on the structural strength of the rack, will be obvious when you do it yourself.
One other minor point, the rack is clearly designed for frames with standard threaded hex metal bolt holes. Not sure if those are standard on low end bikes you'd find in Walmart or Target.
Only tool you'll need is a wrench for 5/16" nut. Allan wrench for hex bolts are included in the package.

Reasonable quality for the price, June 25, 2011
By Skevie (Indiana)

Works fine and will support anything that I am reasonably likely to carry on my bike. It didn't really fit my bike (specifically, the attachment under the seat), so I had to devise an alternate bracket with miscellaneous hardware I had in my tool box - but I have no idea whether this is a result of the design of the rack or whether my bike is unusual.

Hard to find fault with this rack. Simple sturdy design - adjusts to fit so well that it seems custom made for my bicycle with 26 inch wheels and an extra large frame. Install is simple, step-by-step instructions clear and easy to follow. The rack's construction and finish are excellent. Once installed the rack is solid and flat.

Easy installation of Delta Megarack ultra on Trek MTB, May 17, 2011
By perpetual dieter (Midwest USA)

The rack was very simple to install on a 2003 Trek mtn bike. The bike's frame size is 17.5" and the rack's adjustable legs are in as far as they will go. The package contained the right hardware. I did use extra washers and lockwashers. The rack 'feels' solid. I plan on taking it on a 450 mile rail-trail trek this summer. I'll update if I encounter any problems with it during the trip. :>)

doesn't fit all bikes, October 27, 2011
By Darian Cook
|
|
I had a bike rack once before that I had spent between $20-$30 for and it got stole. I decided that this time I would order one from amazon because they are so cheap. Well I am finding out that cheaper is not always better. I tried to assemble the rack and when it came time to bolt it to the frame I found out that one of the holes that it needed to screw into was ocupied by another srew holding my disk break on. After struggling to get the screws to fit in the adjustable peggs had broken in half. Other people say that this product was an over all success after a little tweaking well I say that this product was an over all failure before a little tweaking and then after the tweaking to the product it was garbage. Don't buy it unless you know for sure that it will fit your bike and even then don't buy it because the metal is weak.

Delta cycle ultra Megarack, December 23, 2011
By nitewatcher47
|
|
Well I purchased the rack for a couple different reasons, 1st was due to the price, you can't a really find a good rack like this one at a reasonable price, trust me I looked all over the internet for one, and I actually got it a day ahead of schedule thanks to amazon's great processing and delivery times. The rack does come in pieces so you have to put it together. I did purchase the extra washers based on one of the reviews that I read. After putting it together and installing it on my 26 inch mt bike, the rack is quite sturdy and it could possible take all the weight that it says it can take, but I'll never know because I don't plan to carry that much weight. All in all the rack is going to serve me quit well. And I am very happy with it. Just one more thing if your looking for a good rack at a reasonable price this one is it.

What a great little rack!, December 18, 2011
By David S
|
|
I just got this thing mounted to my new Mongoose XR-75 and it fits perfect.
I still have an issue with the screw holes near the rear axle, because I can't be certain of the true size and thread yet. There isn't enough space to put a bolt and nut in there, but a screw of the right size should thread in perfectly to the existing hole in the bike. It needs to be flush so it won't interfere with the lowest gear on the cassette. If anybody knows the stats on the required screw, please email me through Amazon. It's probably "standard" for most bikes...I just don't know what that standard is yet.
Great things about this rack:
The flat center-piece acts as a mudguard over the rear tire. (I don't want to put fenders on.)
It's very light-weight, yet very strong and rigid as well.
It's the perfect shape for bungee-hooks. (I bought a bungee-net to go with it.)
There's a place to mount a light on the back. (Although I will have to rig something up to get my red blinky back there.)
Bad things about this rack:
None that I can think of. (Life CAN be good!) :-)

Seems to function just fine., December 15, 2011
By Alan Karl Church (Battlefield MO USA)

Adjusting the "steel connector arms" was kind of a pain-really it's better with 2 people, one to spot and one to bend and fit. It was missing a couple of the M5 nyloc nuts-which seems to always be the case with bolt on bike accessories, so an unwanted trip to the hardware store.
The instructions are vague.
Once on there, it seems quite usable. No idea as to long term durability, of course,

I wish this had a grid system on top of it instead of the large flat base. My bag's fastening straps don't line up well and tend to interfere with the wide flat piece running down the center of the rack. However, it is sturdy and it was easy to mount.

Sturdy, Cheap, Effective., April 11, 2012

Anyone with basic understanding of tools can attach this to their bicycle. No, it will not automatically fit all bicycles, you very well may have to tweak and improvise slightly, but again, it shouldn't trouble anyone with even the slimmest mechanical experience. A good solid product, true to its weight capacity.

Decent Rack for every day use, April 11, 2012
By albanycritic (Albany, NY United States)
|
|
I just got through putting this on my bike. The rack itself is very light material, but the arm attachments for upper and lower frames are solid steel. It feels well put together and sturdy. Mine came with all the necessary screws, bolts, washers and parts. The only issue I had was with the brackets for attaching to the upper frame post. The arm attachments are straight pieces of metal. The attachment points on my bike are lower which meant I needed to bend the brackets to make them fit my bike. The brackets are sturdy and made of steel or an alloy because I was able to make them bend with a bit force. All is good now. Decent typical rack. Good buy.

Install not so easy, April 9, 2012
By BootBabe (Austin, TX)

I agree with other reviews who say the install is not the easiest. And I needed to set my rack back further than the arms allowed so I had to jerry rig it with zip-ties, class all the way. For a few more bucks, you can probably get a rack that is easier to install and adjust. I need another rack for my other bike but I will not be buying this one.

I'll let you know when I finally get it installed......., March 23, 2012
By C. AUTH (Baltimore, MD)
|
|
Poor construction, difficult assembly. I wasn't expecting much and this rack still disappointed me. One of the holes on the outside "adjustable" bar was off by more than half a diameter. I had to drill out the hole to make it work. Another bad part of the design is the hardware is too long to not interfere with the rear sprocket low gears. I need to find at least 1/8" shorter bolt for it to work. Save yourself the trouble and buy something else. ***Update*** Finally installed and I'm changing my rating to 2 stars since I "made it work". If you have a Small or X-Small women's bke you may experience some of the challenges I had. 1) Has to be in lowest "adjustable" hole. Which may of not been a problem if the outside pieces holes were in the correct location. Like I said before it was off by 1/2 diameter so you couldn't even use the hole without drilling...I'm being pretty nice to not give it 1 star for this alone since alot of people don't have drills to fix this terrible defect.
2) Small frame of my wife's bike required putting a 30 to 40 degree downward arc in the upper frame attachments. I found this difficult to do but in the end I made it work.
3) The rear light/reflector mount is junk as I've seen other people say in their reviews. Its very thin and weak so I wouldn't trust mounting a light to it...maybe a reflector since they are lighter and cheaper to replace.
4) Screw length (all same length) was a problem for her particular bike (Fuji hybrid XS). I had to get a slightly shorter screw at the hardware store so it didn't interfere with her sprocket cassette. I half blame this on the bike manufacturer for the hole placement.

Easy fit onto Giant Boulder, May 18, 2012
By kneeldug (Ohio, USA)
|
|
I did not need the "to the part of the frame under the seat" clamp because my Giant Boulder frame had these pre-drilled already. Like most bikes, it also had the lower holder pre-drilled. I used the closest-to-set and farthest down to wheel settings, but might move it a little farther from the seat so that the rack is approximately level. It came with everything I needed and I would not hesitate to get another, though be sure that you have the "to the part of the frame under the seat" holes before you buy, otherwise you have to also buy a small clamp (just be sure you have it when you install it). I plan to get another one of these (and the clamp) to install on my wife's vintage Schwinn cruiser.
Overall, it was a very easy install and it seems well-built. I feel stupid for not adding this years ago!

Works well for a while, but lacking durability, May 14, 2012
By Scott J Pendleton
|
|
I liked this rack when I first got it. The mountain hardware is well thought out and it's easy to fit right. I put it on my commuter and was using it most weekdays to ride 18 miles each way to work. When it worked, it was fine. I put a light on the light bracket and that broke off fairly quickly, but that's par for the course for most racks. It was thin material.
The problem was, after five months of commuting, one of the lower posts simply snapped in half about an inch above the rear dropout eyelet attachment. I don't load my panniers up much for commuting, just lunch and a change of clothes which puts me at about 15lbs total. If I'm going lighter than that I'll only use a single half full pannier, which may have caused the problem due to off balance load, but considering it's 5-10lbs it should still be within the limits of the rack.
So I liked the rack while it worked, but it broke in a non-repairable way after half a year of light use. I replaced it with a steel rack and have had no problems since.
