4.5 stars: a great helmet, light, good vents, fits great, looks good, excellent protection, June 8, 2011

The 2011 Giro Xar is a great helmet in its price range.
It's my 4th Giro helmet. All of them held up extremely well, so I'm sure my new Xar will, too.
According to the reviews I read, the Xar is an updated version of the Xen, a highly regarded mountain helmet in the same price range that has just been discontinued. I find the Xar is lightweight and very nicely vented, and the Roc Loc 5 strap system makes it extremely easy to adjust for the perfect fit. I like that you can adjust the angle of the visor. The helmet appears to have exceptional structural integrity and gives me peace of mind for those slightly out of control moments on my hairier rides.
I bought the orange one, and in person it looks better than the photos here. The color is not obnoxious, as you might expect for bright orange. It's attractive. And of course, it's high-vis.
So why 4 stars instead of 5? My previous mountain helmet was a Giro E2 (one of Giro's high-end mountain helmets for many years, which was discontinued a couple years ago). I bought the E2 in Spring 2004. The Xar is not quite as well-vented or as light-weight as the E2. But it's not really a fair comparison, because the E2 cost $50 more than the Xar. For the money, the Xar is great. And on a ride, I can't tell I'm wearing the Xar instead of the E2. You only notice the difference if you're looking at them side by side. So, I'm on the fence about whether to give the Xar 4 or 5 stars. Too bad there's no 4 1/2 option.
In this price range, you might also look at the Giro Athlon and the now discontinued Giro Xen - it's not hard to find good deals on last year's model, and it got great reviews from the leading bicycle magazines & websites.
In summary, I'm very happy with the Xar. If I took a spill and had to replace it, I'd definitely buy another one.

THIS HELMET IS FLAMIN' HOT! And the only possible color for it is orange!, December 8, 2011

Great helmet. I've been a customer of Giro's helmets since '88 (yes, with the cloth mesh covers!) and they've seen me through too many minor crashes. Thankfully, no major ones.
The Xar caught my eye when I started looking for a mountain lid that could withstand a few branches and being knocked about without needing replacement like my road helmets would need after a week on the trail. While the natural choice for this is the Protec $35.00 skate-like thing, aesthetics, weight, and overall comfort play a part, so when I saw the price on the Xar drop to where I wanted it, I grabbed it.
Great fit, with the vertically adjustable rear snuggy thingee a big improvement! The profile isn't ridiculous, so get as loud and bright with the colors as possible. I ride where people hunt, so the idea of a matte, neutral-colored anything is stupid. This Orange is just the stuff.
Can't recommend this helmet enough.

Just great! The perfect helmet, October 9, 2011

I'm a huge fan of Giro helmets. I had 4 of them until I lost one during one of my rides some months ago.
I have a Xen and I love it so I wanted to replace the one I lost with a second Xen. Then I found out about the Xar, got one and falled in love with it.
I liked it's slimer form compared to the Xen and the fact that it's a little ligthter. Plus orange is my favorite color and it looks so cool when riding. I'm getting another one soon.
A great purchase!!

Good fer yer noggin, September 19, 2011

Purchased this after a lot of research. Was choosing between this and a 661 Recon Helmet. 661 helmet, while very good, just didn't fit my head as well as the Xar. It's light, allows decent airflow and the fit adjustment is great.

great MTB helmet, August 27, 2011
By Barry Holsinger

Not much to say, it's exceeded my expections. Occasionally I have to check the helmet is still on my head because it's really light, comfie, and COOL. I replaced a $20 helmet from a bigbox store, so there's a world of difference.
One comment about Amazon fulfillment: I wanted the metallic orange, but Amazon did not have it available with Prime. So i ordered the matte orange instead, but wouldn't you know, Amazon screwed up and sent me a Metallic orange instead. That's the first (and probably last) time I'll ever see amazon make a mistake in my favor.

Very Happy, August 1, 2011

I am really impressed with the Xar. It's not overly bulky like some MTB helmets and is well ventilated. The sizing/retention system is excellent; it allows for very fine adjustments on the fly with one hand. I also like the adjustable visor. I tried the less expensive Giro Phase and can say that the Xar is easily worth the extra $.

Great Helmet, July 7, 2011
By Readin' 4 Fun (Sunny AZ)

Great helmet, a little pricey. I got it to replace my 5 year old Xen. Some say it is heavier, I found it to be no heavier and I like the retention better. Especially the ability to move the rear part up or down the back of my head. Overall it is a good value and very comfortable.
