If you don't have lube you risk chafing, June 6, 2011
By Lisa Mann
|
|
Don't expect to just slip this puppy on (without lube) and be on your merry way. It took my bf longer to put this skin on my lock than it did for him to assemble the bike.
The instructions call for the following:
sharp scissors
safety utility blade & cut resistant gloves
small thin blade standard screwdriver
3mm hex wrench
large pan or bowl that will allow the shackle to completely fit inside
warm water source
liquid soap or a wax base lube like Finish Line Teflon Dry Lube (WTF??)
Cloth or paper towels
Optional: "Blow Gun" attachment for air compressor (as shown) (insert picture here)
So...the moral of the story is if you can find someone patient and loving enough to figure out how to slip this rubber on AND he has a blow gun attachment handy, then you are golden and the end result is pure happiness!

Skin only... U-lock NOT included!, April 26, 2011
By J_____

|
Read the description for this item carefully! The low price should have given it away, but this is not a U-lock, rather just the rubber skin to accessorize a lock. For what it is, I'm sure its an OK item, although a bit expensive for a piece of bright plastic/rubber tubing. I mistakenly (and stupidly) ordered this thinking that it was the Kryptonite Mini U-lock WITH a colored skin based on the picture and a hastily reading the description. Although it clearly states in the product features that the lock is not included, the description states: "Color Skin Kit includes: SHACKLE & CROSSBAR covers and DUSTCOVER parts." Which can be a bit misleading due to the misplaced emphasis coupled with the image of the lock & skin.

Really easy -- don't worry, June 16, 2011

I got this for my new mini-u lock, to help it match my bike, and to distinguish it from my sweetie's when we grab them from the bike shed. One of the reviews here made me a bit nervous that it would be a pain to install, so I wanted to come back and report. I think the manufacturer's instructions might make it seems a little more complicated than it really is, as they cover a lot of contingencies and have hints you might not need. Basically:
1. Easily wiggle off the pieces on the crossbar and replace with those provided. There is no real resistance or difficulty with this part.
2. Remove the two rubber gaskets and the hanging mount if you have one from the u-shaped part of the lock.
3. Cut off the vinyl cover on the u-shaped part of the lock. They suggest heating the metal and existing vinyl cover in hot water first, to make it pliable enough to fit scissors under the edge, but it was easier to just carefully use a box cutter.
4. Adjust the size of the replacement vinyl cover per the directions to roughly match your lock size (you will do final trimming later)
5. Heat the metal and the new vinyl in hot water for 2-3 minutes to make things easier (this time it is necessary); put a spoonful of dish detergent in your hand and coat the u-shape; dry your hands for traction.
6. Quickly slip the new vinyl over the metal, scooting it along until it is in place. Using a cloth for traction helped. There will be some extra on both ends. This is the step others seem to have had trouble with. It took me about 90 seconds. I think it would have been much messier if I had used actual bike lube. The directions include a bunch of hints, and how to get it started again if the vinyl loses pliability before you get it all the way on, like re-warming and re-lubing, or using an air gun. They also mention a YouTube video, but I did not need to refer to it.
7. Trim the ends of the vinyl to the right length specified in the directions, and replace the rubber gaskets and hanging mount.
The whole thing took about 15 or 20 minutes, including reading directions and all set up and clean up. I really like the new look. Good luck!

Fun, cheap addition that encourages locking, April 26, 2011

My wife wanted a "cute" lock for her new bike (I know, I know) but this pink kit did exactly what it took to get her locking up her bike at every stop. Easy to install, requires removing the existing rubber guards that came on your Kryptonite lock.
I have used it on my own "manly" bike and have to admit I like it! I think the bright color draws attention to the fact that my bike is locked up.

Kryptonite U-Lock Color Skins MILEADING, April 30, 2012
By adoboguitar

I bought this product thinking I was buying a U-Lock, it arrived in the mail a few days later, two pieces of rubber tubing, no lock, no luck (excuse the pun),should have read the fine print although the product in the picture was pretty misleading...I cant return the product cause it only cost around 90 cents and but the shipping cost around 6-7$...so if your looking for an actual lock, this isn't it....

nice match, August 21, 2011
By Linda Sigismondi (Gallipolis, OH USA)

The skin was a perfect match to my bike. It was easier to put on than other reviews indicated - one just needs to soak it for a few minutes in a bowl of warm water(as iindicated in the directions) and it slips on without too much effort, even for a female without a lot of upper body strength.

easy, November 23, 2011

I purchased 2 sleves (blue and white) for my Kryptonite lock, mainly to match the colours of my bike. This product is so simple to fit, i did not struggle once and the whole process only took a few minutes. The old black and orange sleves came off very easy (with a stanley knife). And after warming the new sleeve in water it went on with very little resistance. Looks great with my bike, and hopefully the Kryptonite lock will do its job! Recommended!!

expensive for a piece of plastic, November 16, 2011

Cheap Chinese plastic, not durable. Worth about $1. Don't waste your money unless you really have to have a matching color for your bike.

Hard to install?? If you can't read instructions..., March 29, 2012
By CookieMonsterSki

I'm not really sure what other reviewers are talking about. If you follow the instructions and heat the sleeves and bracket and use dish soap to slide the new sleeve on, this is a piece of cake. I'm a woman for the record, so it's not like this is some sort of "man work." It took me all of 10 minutes from start to finish and it looks awesome! I got the white skin and I love how crisp, clean and modern it looks. Very cool, will buy more when this one tires out. I took pics and uploaded them to the product image gallery.
My only gripe is that the zip ties that attached the sleeve to the packaging were a little too tight, so it left impressions in the vinyl (as you can see in the pics if you look carefully.) I'm hoping they will smooth out on their own with time, but even if they don't it's really not even worth complaining about.

Purple Lock? Yes Please!, September 22, 2011
By Oshane
|
|
I'm not sure why others have had trouble putting this on their u-lock...did you first remove the original black casing? If you read the directions, it goes on pretty easily. I was in a rush and heading out to dinner (but of course, felt the need to make my lock purple immediately) and completed within 10 minutes.
And it's so pretty!! It looks like the lock was purchased this way, and I couldn't be happier.
