3.0 out of 5 stars.  Overall fine, but definately room to improve considering the premium price., July 12, 2011
By S. Power (Detroit, Michigan, United States)
I bought these gloves to replace a 12 year old pair of similar gloves from Specialized that I'd been wearing. Those had gotten gross and the padding was ceasing to exist.

These Pearl Izumi Elite gloves are good, but have plenty of room for improvement. The good first:

Comfort. These gloves are comfortable, even during very long rides. They pretty much stay in place, and feel good on the grips. With a couple small exceptions that I'll get to below, they feel good on your hands.

Fit. I have large hands and bought the XL size. There isn't much room to spare, and they don't fit as loosely as my 12 year stretched gloves, but overall, these fit well though snug. Because they breath so well, the snugness isn't a problem. Although short, the fingers don't 'ride up' too badly.

Temperature. These gloves are well ventilated and are cool. The fabric, holes, and design allow them to keep your hands cool. Although I think the fingers are too short, there shortness also contributes to this coolness.

Padding. These gloves are well padded and the padding seems to be in exactly the right places for where I hold my mountain bike handlebar grips. It is thick enough to cushion, but no so thick that it affects your grip on the bike.

Durability. I've only used these for one long ride so far, and they seem to be pretty durable. I'm concerned about some of the stitches around the fingers coming undone, because they aren't finished very cleanly, but so far, it isn't a problem. The materials and stitching, over-all, seems to be very durable.

The bad:

Tags. Whoever decided to put two huge and itchy tags inside these gloves should be fired or demoted. If a tag or two is needed, why couldn't a single small, soft, fabric tag that my old gloves had, accomplish the purpose. If I rip these tags out, the seems that hold them in may be damaged, and if I cut them, it will make the itchiness even worse. The tags, and the itchiness and discomfort they cause would have caused me not to buy these gloves if I knew about them ahead of time. If they weren't the only serious flaw in these gloves, I'd probably return them over it.

Build quality. Around some of the finger ends, their is thread from the seams dangling out about half an inch. This doesn't present a problem now, but looks like it could be a source of future unraveling. By itself these aren't a huge issue, but I'm concerned that it may be indicative of less then ideal build quality and future problems. I'll update this review if they cause the gloves to fall apart prematurely. A premium priced product like these should be made better.

Finger length. I think that the fingers on these are as long as they need to be for their purpose, and are probably so short to allow them to be cool. My personal preference would be for them to be a little bit longer, to make removing the gloves easier and to eliminate the feeling of the fingers 'riding-up'. This is a minor personal preference sort of thing though, and I don't hold the finger length against this product at all.

Over-all, I recommend these gloves. In hindsight, I probably should have spent the gas to shop for them in a specialty sport retailer, but I don't regret the purchase.

3 Stars. I seem to be the lowest rating on these gloves and I hope that people don't hold that against me too much. I am usually very liberal with my ratings of products, and don't feel like I'm being unfairly harsh about these gloves. In my opinion, the discomfort from the tags is worth a full star or more, and the build quality issues with the strings sticking out is also worth a full star or more. If it wasn't for all 10 other reviewers giving these gloves such glowing reviews, I would have given them 2 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Light and Comfortable, April 21, 2011
By erudite cyclist (SLC, UT USA)
These gloves are great. I ordered them through another website, and when they arrived I thought they wouldn't have enough padding. I couldn't have been more wrong. Despite the fact that the padding is not thick, they provide the right amount of cushion to keep my hands comfortable. The comfort bridge feature also helps in this regard, as it takes a lot of the pressure off of the ulnar and median nerves (if your hands hurt or go numb following longer rides, you're probably putting too much pressure on those nerves).

As far as keeping my hands a good temperature, they seem to work great. Although it is a little early in the season to tell how they handle extreme heat (it hasn't broke 75 on any of my rides since buying the gloves). I've ridden in relatively cool weather (50 degrees f) and they still worked great.

I ordered one size larger than I would normally get in a glove, as I have found that my hands tend to expand a little bit on some of my longer rides.

If you're a relative newbie to the cycling world (like I am) you'll find these are well worth the money. But be sure to work on having good hand posture while riding as that may help resolve a lot of the pain and numbness associated with riding.

UPDATE: I've had several 1-2 hour rides in the summer heat and these gloves have kept my hands cool and dry despite the 95+ degree (f) temperatures. Definitely well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great cool and comfortable gloves, May 19, 2011
By Erik D. Rosenstrauch
I just did a 150 mile ride this past week and experienced much less hand cramping. And the ride was in the Florida heat and my hands were kept cool and dry. Worth every penny.

One of the best for long distance MTN biking here in the heat of Texas. None of the local bike stores carried it anymore, ordered off Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, comfortable gloves!, May 26, 2011
By George Robarge (Mattoon, Illinois United States)
Was looking for a good pair of biking gloves to make riding more comfortable and these definitely do just that. I've used them for two 10+ mile rides and my hands never got sore or cramped and I have no reason to believe that a longer ride would change that. My hands stayed about as cool as you could imagine while wearing gloves. They also have a tab to help removing them which works very well. If I had to buy another pair at some point I would buy these again.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  glove size, July 24, 2011
By sleepdoctor (Saugatuck, MI)
I ride about 100 miles a week and wear small gloves. However, after reading other reviews here I bought a pair of small Pearl Elite Gelvent Gloves and a pair of medium Pearl Select gel gloves. They both fit well, the smalls are snug, how I like them and the mediums fit but not snugly. I've not worn the select gloves on a ride yet (maybe update later) but I just got in fro a ride with the elite gelvent gloves and I wasn't impressed. Two problems, they don't have much gel ar padding and they feel like it after an hour and a half ride. In addition, the "gelvent" has a pattern to it, not just a pad of gel, and you start feeling the pattern. It's like having a seam on the palm that starts rubbing your palm. Thirdly, there is zero padding over the mediam nerve in the palm which is what causes carpel tunnel syndrome. I don't have that problem, but it seemed like a significant problem for those that do get it. They do look pretty cool, but I buy them for comfort. I bought both from amazon, and as usual had great "fulfillment" experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Road Cycling Gloves, September 3, 2011
By SS-3 (Jackson, NJ United States)
I never wore gloves for riding before I owned this set. I recently went from a mountain bike a road bike earlier this year. I would typically spend ninety minutes in the saddle on my old mountain bike. I find myself spending between 2 - 4 hours in the saddle the on my road bike. I noticed some hand cramping starting to occur as I reached the two hour mark and it would get progressively worse as time went on after that point. My LBS recommended padded cycling gloves to cure this issue. I opted to purchase this pair of gloves from Amazon because they were considerably less expensive than my LBS or other online retailers.

The gloves have made a huge difference in ride comfort and over grip. I was surprised that these gloves actually improved my grip and also eliminated sweaty hands. I was very concerned about my hands overheating and sweating because I tend to run hot. These actually reduced the sweat and my hands do not feel warm or hot wearing them. I have put about 600 miles on this set and they are showing no signs of wear. FYI... I watch them once a week as well.

I highly recommend these gloves to any road cyclist. They are comfortable, durable, and enhance your grip.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Good design / style but poor quality construction - returned after 2 rides, April 22, 2012
By Danimal (Valley City, OH USA)
Stitching at the end of each finger opening began to unravel almost immediately. Reflective "Pearl Izumi" lettering peeled off the glove after 1 ride. Similar to another reviewer, a piece of the material used for the finger openings actually came off between my fingers as I removed the glove from my hand. I ride almost exclusively in Pearl Izumi clothing but this is the second pair of >$40 gloves where the quality was really poor.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome gloves, February 27, 2012
By JAD
These gloves are awesome. They really work. Sizing runs on the small side - "snug" is good - but "tight" cuts off circulation when seams ride up between fingers. Consider going with next size up once you have determined your hand size by using sizing methods provided. All in all - a very good product. Palm fatigue was substantially reduced. Nothing will ever fully eliminate all discomforts on long rides - short of your adjusting bike geometry and posture and adapting to certain discomforts over time - but these sure go a long way.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not normal Pearl Izumi quality, December 7, 2011
By John W. Bodenburg
I wear a lot of items from Pearl Izumi and was surprised at the poor quality of these riding gloves. The first time I wore them I was taking them off and the end of one finger actually tore. A piece about 1/16 of an inch actually pulled away completely. There are too many good brands on the market to buy bad quality. I think these Pearl Izumi gloves are probably made oversees with no quality control so the customer suffers.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Bad velcro, July 27, 2011

The velcro strap is tiny and barely stays secured. It gets worse when sweat is involved. Other than that they're nice.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike gloves extrodinaire, July 7, 2011

The Pearl Izumi Elite Gelvent Gloves are as good as their name is long. Well padded, flexible, cool and easy to get on. My only negative comment is that you cannot remove them any easier than other bike gloves even though they are advertised as such.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  These depend on how you hold your handlebars, May 22, 2012
By David L. Andrews (Kearny, NJ)
I wear size XXL, this review may not be accurate for other sizes.

So I've had good luck with Pearl Izumi gloves in the past and as my old ones have worn out (which apparently are no longer for sale) I decided to give these a try.

To put it bluntly these are horrible for me. I do 90%+ of my riding on the hoods. I like using either bullhorn style or drop bars. The bulk of my riding actually puts pressure on heal of my hands BUT riding on the hoods your gloves will pull and put stress typically between your thumb and forefinger. My old gloves handled this wonderfully and there was great positioning of the seams and cushioning in that area.

These on the other hand are worse than wearing no gloves at all. While the Gel certainly works for heal of my hand these gloves have irritated and inflamed the soft skin between my thumb and forefinger. Feels almost like someone used sandpaper on that area, I know that if I hadn't removed the gloves I'd have very quickly developed blisters in that area.

My old gloves are fantastic in this area. I've no idea why they changed the design but it looks like I'm going to have to look elsewhere for gloves now.

If anyone has any suggestions replies to this post are more then welcome.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not Very Durable, May 10, 2012
By BCU (NC)
I bought these gloves to go along with a 5 year old pair gloves from Specialized. Although the Specialized Gloves are somewhat old looking they are holding up quite well and comfortable, I just wanted two pair of gloves to be able to trade from ride to ride.

These PI gloves are very cool and comfortable, however, they are snug and the fingers are short - this combination makes them very difficult to remove (especially when sweaty). They have an "Easy Off Pull Tab" but I'm pretty sure this would tear the fabric if this was used often (and it only works around the finger that has that feature).

They feel good and I want to like them but after about 40 days after purchase the stitching is coming apart (after about 15 hours of use). Note that the stitching is coming apart on the top of glove between the thumb and index finger (I don't believe this is related to the stress of removing them).

It is my opinion that a premium priced product like these should be made better - thus the one star rating. I really like my other PI bike clothing, but the gloves just aren't made as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent post sell service, October 28, 2011
By Douglas Betioli Ribeiro
I bought izumi gloves + shoes, and both were too small. I was visiting Orlando, live in Brazil and would not have time to ship back and purchase again. I discovered there is a Izumi store on Orlando International Drive Premium Outlet. Even though they have not been the ones selling to me, they accepted all goods back and let me buy back by the exact same amount I paid in Amazon. Amazing thing is - I was able to get a better shoe on sale, and the same glove, refurb but perfect, for 1/3 or the price. I'm super happy with Izumi customer care, thanks Izumi!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Pearl Izumi Elite Gelvent glove padding too thin, September 18, 2011

I have used Pearl Izumi gloves for several years with good results but not this time. The reviews were impressive thus my purchase, however I find my hands becoming numb after a few miles on the drops. I will be looking for a new glove at REI soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Gloves, no regrets, August 14, 2011
By BlackHawk (Santa Clarita, CA)
There isn't a lot to say here, these gloves are pretty nice. The 'easy removal' addition on the fingers of the gloves - well it's a great idea and it works in the store when your hands are dry but if you've been out long enough to be sweaty it wont do you any good in glove removal and you'll have to remove them the same as any other similar gloves. I'm not going to mark the gloves down for that as they still compete on par with other gloves as far as comfort features, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Velcro sometimes comes undone, July 25, 2011
By Andrew Marshall
I like these gloves a lot. They are very comfortable and fit well. I've used them on a number of long rides (70 miles) and I don't have any discomfort or numbness in my hands. The only issue I have with these gloves is that the velcro sometimes comes undone. The gloves fit well enough that it does not really matter, but I can't give five stars to a product with a design flaw.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Value, June 14, 2011
By R. DAILEY (GA)
My first pair of gloves were the Giro Zeros (no padding on the palm). That was a mistake, even short rides left my hands in pain long before I was tired of riding. These Gelvent gloves are awesome. The padding is great, a thin solid rubbery pad with vents under a nylon mesh. I'm not sure how long they will last, and I'm pretty careful when putting them on or taking them off but for the price they're great and I would recommend them.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Get a grip on the open road with Pearl Izumi..., June 2, 2011
By Jimmy T. (Greater Detroit, MI USA)
These are excellent gloves for any distance ride! While these are my 2nd pair of the same gloves, I simply alternate between the original pair and these new ones as both pair work as advertised - I especially appreciate the finger pull tab feature as well as the style, color scheme, and excellent over-all fit, form, and function that these gloves deliver! Great value for the $$!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Another Good Pearl Izumi Product, June 23, 2011
By Book Monger
While the description says they are easy to remove, they are just as difficult as other riding gloves. The better gloves have sewn loops between the 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers that you can use to remove the gloves. The more you sweat, the more difficult it is to remove your gloves. I also evaluate whether the gloves can be washed daily without falling apart, obviously, if you don't wash your gloves they will get mildewed and you can transfer those pathogens into your eye causing potential problems. If they start to stink even after you wash them, its time to get some new ones. I usually have two or three pair that I rotate from one ride to another. I always wash them in the hottest water in my washing machine, that seems to keep the stink and the microbes down, I also turn them inside out to wash them since the inside palm is where they will start to stink first.

So far so good. I gave the gloves four stars only because they are not that easy to remove, in fact they are just as difficult as other gloves even though Pearl Izumi says they are supposed to be easy to remove. The support, finger length and the GEL inserts seem to be in the right places and the hook/loop closure tab is on the inside wrist instead of on top of the glove which doesn't give you weird looking suntan lines on your hands. The size runs about right, but I would pick a size larger than you normally would since when you wash them, they will shrink. I bought a XL, I wish that I bought the XXL. Pearl Izumi is one of the only companies that offer gloves that large, kudo's to them.[...]
