5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent, June 13, 2011
By Squirrelman (OH, USA)
These cycling shorts are made from a light polyester-like fabric and sport a single zippered pocket. These shorts include the Pearl Izumi Men's Liner Short which can be purchased separately. The shorts are reasonably priced when you consider the cost of the liners.

The material is light but stays in place as you ride. The amount of material is not skintight nor saggy & rarely gets caught on my saddle. The single zippered pocket is ample enough to hold a medium wallet (located on the lower portion of the right leg)

The elastic waistband adjusts with several buttons on each side of the shorts. A pair of loops inside the waistband clip to the short liners (to avoid sagging?) I purchased a medium size for an approx. 35" waist and only a minor adjustment to the waistband was needed.

The padded liner portion of the shorts are definitely the highlight of the product and I suggest you check out those independent reviews (search Pearl Izumi Men's Liner Short). The existing liner reviews are very clear and constructive. I will be purchasing more of the liners in the near future as they should work well with other athletic shorts.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Like, July 27, 2011
By GDCFlorida
OK, so I'm 5'-10" and I normally wear a size 36 in Levi's jeans and sometimes a 34 in store brand casual shorts. I ordered a size L in these Pearl Izumi shorts and perhaps wish that I'd ordered a size M. The "cinch" elastic waist is adequate to hold the shorts up, but I fear that they make my ass look 'baggy'. I love the fabric, actually the fabric is totally awesome. I wish that they had more pockets, then I'd wear them almost every day. The one zipper pocket is good, you won't loose your stuff, but will only hold a car key or similar. These shorts are long and will probably cover your knees unless you are 6-foot tall or taller (I'm 5-10). I thought the color would be more like khakki (tan) but it is sort-of a cross between khakki-tan-green. Overall, I'm pleased with the sorts. I have used the padded liner for biking and it seems quite adequate.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Detailing but missing something, July 1, 2011
By Rick O'Neal (EAGLE, ID, US)
Pearl Izumi does a great job in constructing riding shorts. Length, stretch, sizing, design,--all great but for one thing. Would have been very nice to have at least one pocket somewhere that is large enough to carry something other than identification. Still, these are very comfortable on the bike or out and about. Really good shorts.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good fit, September 7, 2011
By SDDK52 (San Diego, Ca USA)
Good fit. Looks like board shorts. Smooth, lightweight material. Insert with pad is not chamois but is comfortable. Styling is a little dated.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Shorts, August 6, 2011
By diggitydogg
These shorts are really nice. Very comfortable, but my only complaint is that they lack traditional front pockets. They have a small zippable pocket down closer to the bottom of the shorts, but I wish they had normal pockets, too. Very nice shorts, though - I own 4 pair because they're so comfy!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I'm Impressed, October 9, 2011
By RRR (Los Angeles, USA)
I've gone back to bike riding after stopping for about 20 years. I've moved to a hybrid style bike and didn't want to go the way of the speed racer look. I tried these on at the local sporting goods store and was impressed and ordered them. I went on a 16 mile ride today and I couldn't be more pleased with the shorts. Very comfortable, they end up about 3 inches above my knee when peddling. If you don't know, there is a liner short inside that is fastened to the outer shell with some button straps (like mini suspenders). They work great and move well. My only complaint is that there is only one pocket and they put it at the bottom of the leg. I put my iPhone in there and it hangs under my leg. Didn't bother me much but it felt weird at first. The pad was very comfortable. I'd say they were perfect if it had a higher pocket.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great fit and fit for purpose, October 8, 2011
By A. Ross (Grafton, Ohio United States)
This is the 2nd pair of these cycling shorts I have. Simple cycling shorts, well made, breathe well, intelligent design of shorts and inner and good value.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I would expect no less from Pearl-Izumi, August 18, 2011
By Terry Hutt (Running Springs, CA)
Unlike other mountain biking shorts I own, the liner and shorts are completely seperate and are held together as you ride by two loops and clips. At first I thought this was a bit odd, but it works really well, especially in the laundry.

The liners are light/medium weight lycra with good padding and could be used as undershorts on their own with any pair of cycling shorts. Inside seam is long enough to grab and hold leg warmers which is a must for me.

The nylon shell has no padding but does have a small zippered pocket in the right leg which is large enough to hold keys and cash. The legs come down just above the knees and fit fairly close to the leg, but not snugly. On the recumbent this means I don't get wind blowing up my groin which is a solid plus, especially on those cold nights. There is a standard zipper with a pop fastener at the top. Waist is elasticated to allow for those less energetic winter months :-)

Pearl-Izumi wins again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bike Shorts!, August 17, 2011
By Scott (Massachusetts)
I picked up a pair of the Canyon shorts and some additional liners for my 5 mile each way commute to work this summer. They've been outstanding. I have 34~35" waist and the medium size worked for me. The shorts dry quickly and I can swap out clean liners without the need to launder the shorts themselves daily. Just a bit stretchy, not too slippery, and just loose enough, they work well on the bike without turning me into "that spandex guy" when I arrive at the office.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  bike shorts, July 31, 2011
By nickq (Fort Collins, CO)
These are some pretty nice mountain biking shorts, lightweight and durable. Only gripe I have is it would be nice to have a pocket somewhere other than by my knee. I like to carry my phone or gps in an accessible place to check the map easily, but when you have it in the knee pocket (the only pocket) it constantly rubs while pedaling. But overall these are good shorts, the included liner has just the right amount of padding IMO.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Light material and be wary of the size, September 26, 2011
By Jon Becker
So, the internal chamois is not the same as you would buy separately, the size is HUGE compared to what you expect (go a size down) and the outer material is not appropriate for anything other than biking.

Love the chamois, HATE the short.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  My only gripe is with size options, December 29, 2011
By Ali Sh. (Reston, VA)
I've used these a couple of times so far, and find them pretty comfortable. Not sure about durability and washability yet. My only problem was lack of a 'medium' size, since the 'small' was too small and the 'large' was too large for me. (I only had the issue with the outer shell)

However, one nice thing that helps with the size issue is the waste adjustment mechanism that I discovered only by accident, since it wasn't at all noted anywhere. The outer shell has two buttons on the sides and a stretchable band that goes through rear half of the shorts that has multiple cuts on it on both sides. So one can adjust the waste size by putting the buttons on different cuts. Not ideal, but works for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Ok bike shorts, July 26, 2011
By Frank J. Hahn II
Bought these as my first pair of mountain bike shorts. They look cool and wear fine, but not sure I like them entirely. Not enough pockets for holding stuff. I thought I would like the removable (padded) liner, so that I could chose to wear them or not, but they are cumbersome to deal with attached. Best off to put them on first, then clip on, if at all. Got another pair with liner attached and seems to be much easier to get in and out of attached.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect product, November 29, 2011
By NM
I very rarely can give 5 stars to a product. This is one of those times, this product is flawless. The shorts are comfortable, they're not too long and unlike others I like having only one pocket. You shouldn't to cry a whole lot in your pockets when you ride, that's what seat bags are for. The liner is comfortable and does the job to keep you comfortable. It seems like they run a hair smaller than other shorts so it might be worth getting one size larger for some. The bottom line is, if you're looking to buy some bike shorts buy these. You can't go wrong.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good shorts, November 24, 2011
By Sig-shooter
I wanted some good mtn biking shorts that would keep me cool, pad my behind and had some durability. I also wanted some shorts that would allow me to stow away my keys in a small pocket. These shorts had all that.

I dropped a star off for the price, while I do enjoy the short I thought the price was a little high. Something to note is, I couldn't find another short with all the things I wanted while paying less.

Like the short, would buy more if they were more affordable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Shorts.... Miss the Pockets, February 5, 2012
By DP
Just bought these shorts in grey. Very comfortable and the detachable inner padding is very much a plus.
I am 5-10 190lbs. I bought medium shorts, and true to the reviews, shorts run big so the mediums were perfect for me.
I do wish the shorts had more than one small pocket though. Overall, Im happy with this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great shorts and liner, March 23, 2012
By Jon (Florida)
These shorts and the liner that comes with them are awesome. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the shorts only have one pocket at the knee which isn't a huge deal but I don't see why they couldn't have included pockets at the hips too.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike Pants, March 15, 2012

Good inner pants in both fit and fabric. Seat padding is very comfortable. Having a larger pocket on the outer pant would upgrade this to a 5 star item

4.0 out of 5 stars.  very nice shorts, March 12, 2012
By James A. Krieger (Lincoln, NE United States)
Overall I really like these shorts. The styling is very nice and the chamois pad is well padded. My biggest complaint is the pocket, it's almost worthless. It's very small and at the bottom of the right leg so whatever you put in there bounces around as your leg goes up and down.
I typically wear a 34 pants and I ordered a medium. I almost returned them because they were really snug. I had read reviews that it had button adjustments along the waist, but it was already on the last button. I thought I try them on one final time before returning them, and then I realized, duh, just unbutton the adjustment straps and then it fit fine. The liner does seem to ride up and bunch at the bend in my left leg, but we'll see if that's still a problem after a wear them some more.
I would buy these again, the color and styling are very nice and the price is reasonable for similar products.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love these shorts, February 20, 2012
By michael anstrom
These shorts are awesome, comfortable and true to size. I bought two pair of these and wear them to ride to work almost everyday. These come with the Pearl Izumi liners with padded seat. The zip pocket is the size of an iphone and could carry a small wallet in addition. The medium size fits my 32 inch waist comfortably.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Comfortable, great fit, April 18, 2012
By J. Han
Was looking for a pair of shorts I could use on the dirt and for casual exercise on the road. These shorts work nicely for both. Since they fit relatively close to the legs, they don't flap around as much for the road but still loose enough for a mountain biking baggy.

The included chamois fits nicely as well. It helps make a 3 hour bumpy ride quite comfortable.

I'm 5'8" with a 31 waist and the medium fits very well. It does have adjustable straps so a range of an inch both ways should work.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great first pair, April 16, 2012
By Mark Himmel (Pittsburgh, PA)
I bought these a couple days ago and i love them so far. The only downfall is that they only have 1 pocket, which i can understand because you dont want to be weighed down while riding, but at the same time its nice to have a couple more pockets when not riding. I just started riding to get in to better shape and for a bigger guy (310 lbs) i think they fit excellent. I did, however, have to exchange for a bigger size even though i followed the sizing chart. So, i would recommend going one size up from what the sizing chart recommends. All in all i am very satisfied with the shorts for the price that they were.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good shorts, April 12, 2012
By Jstomuch (Highland, CA)
I've had these shorts for a month and a half and find them to be very comfortable. The chamois does it's job and keeps you comfortable while in the saddle. The garment seems well made and hopefully will last for some time. I didn't need shorts with pockets, but if you do, these shorts are not for you. They only have the one small zipped pocket on the bottom of the right leg, and as mentioned, it's not very large, although I found I could fit my wallet in it, if I work at it. I'm very happy with this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great shorts but they run a bit large, April 10, 2012
By ride or die (Orem, Utah USA)
I really like the look and feel of the shorts, the liner is fabulous and very comfortable. I'm a 34" so I purchased the large and they are pretty big, still useable just a bit too big. I don't really mind not having pockets, I only wear these for riding and keep all my stuff in my pack.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome product - Very pleased, April 3, 2012
By Brett (United States)
I just did my first trail bike / trail run in these shorts and I totally like them. I too have ridden in spandex bike shorts for a long time and was a little concerned about these. That concern only lasted a few minutes.

BIKING:
My butt is pretty bike experienced and I don't really need much padding. The pads on these shorts were a tad thicker that my TRI shorts. The padding was perfect. It didn't ride up or down. It didn't shift it simply was a non-issue.

The shorts are soft and felt great on my legs. Since they are a little longer they offer sun/bug protection.

RUNNING:
Normally I would not run in something like this but I had just finished a 7 mile trail ride and I didn't feel like changing. I was VERY surprised that running in these was very comfortable. Admittedly I would not put them on if I were just going for a run but on this particular 5 mile trail run they performed very well.

Just to sum this up; the inner spandex shorts are a perfect fit. The legs stay put and they don't pull the hair out of my legs. The outer shell is soft and stylish. The leg pocket is a tad small but to be honest I would not carry more that the key for my car in there anyway.

Nice product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Shorts But They Are a Bit Big, May 13, 2012
By moik (Klamath Falls, Oregon, USA)
As a "Clydesdale" runner and bicyclist I have become used to buying sports clothes a size larger than my actual size (that is to say the size I would wear for non-sports clothing) because this type of gear tends to run small. This is especially true of triathlon specific gear and ALL cycling gear originating in Europe. But if you buy the Pearl Izumi Canyon Short make sure to order your normal size - these run a little large with respect to most cycling gear. Otherwise - terrific product.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  PI Quality seems to have really degraded, May 13, 2012
By M. Kleckner (Lake Orion, MI)
I purchased these last year after a number of years off from MTB riding. The first thing I noticed was that the liner seemed a bit thin. Also, sizing seems to run way big, which is odd compared to previous Pearl Izumi items that I have owned. Several rides and one light fall later, and the liner is having some issues where I fell on it. My previous 10 year old shorts and liner are still going strong after many falls, some bad enough to cause a nice raspberry burn through the layers, but no harm to the material itself. Something seems to have changed with PI stuff, and I will be more cautious in the future about purchasing it.
