3.0 out of 5 stars.  where is the select Gel?, April 18, 2011
By comfort seeker
I purchased these gloves based on the description thinking they would provide a soft gel pad between me and the bike. I suffer from numb tingling hands from pressure on the palm nerves.
First off the gloves run very small. I bought the large and I am a small guy. They fit very snug but they are new and may stretch.
They gel padding is very thin and I hardly know they are there. I have only used gloves with conventional padding and found them to be thicker with more cushion than these.
If you are looking for a 'Cushion' for your palms then these are not for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  An exercise in mediocrity, July 6, 2011
By Ringo
I bought a pair of these gloves (the orange ones) just because I thought they looked nice. Well, unfortunately the padding is only so-so, they have a nasty plastic smell that has remained for months, and the large white areas turned a nasty brown/gray within only a couple of rides due to minimal road grime (and this was in summer 2011).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nicely made gloves, but they don't prevent numb hands., April 18, 2011
By verygooddog
The main reason I bought the Pearl Isumi Select Gel gloves was based on reviews that said that gel-padded gloves would eliminate or reduce hand numbness. I'm a recreational rider, my bike is a straight bar hybrid and my typcal ride is 15 - 25 miles. After about 30 minutes into a ride, my hands begin to get numb, and I move them to alternative positions (my bike has bar ends) to restore the feeling. This works, but I was hoping that the gloves would reduce the problem, but they do not. I've used them on 3 rides of about 20 miles each, and it doesn't seem that they helped with the numbness at all. There are other reasons to wear gloves (sun block, palm protection in a crash, better grip on the bars), but I can't say that they helped with numbness.

The gloves themselves are well made. I particularly appreciate the EasyOff removal tab on the ring finger; it does make the glove removal process easier.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  run small, April 27, 2011
By Moonbeam
They run small. I ended up with a larger size of the "Pearl Izumi Men's Select Glove" (no 'gel' in the name). They were $18 vs. $24.60 for these, and the padding seemed better to me. Otherwise similar. x-large fit me well though I think of my hand size as average.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  No Gel Gloves, August 11, 2011
By Squirrelman (OH, USA)
- No detectable gel in the gloves despite the title
- Padding is basic
+ Enough coverage for general protection from a fall or brush (excluding the finger ends/knuckles)
+ Mostly breathable
+ Soft, cloth-like section near the thumb for wiping sweat
+ Gets the grip I need on my grips and untaped bar ends
+ Aesthetics

Note: They run rather small. Buy 1 size up if you're on the low to mid-end of a common size spectrum (medium gloves fit loose or fit okay), 2 sizes up if you tend to experience/prefer a snug fit on a common size.

I bought these for the primary purpose of grasping bicycle grips and bar ends which get slippery on long rides as sweat accumulates. They work perfect for that purpose and they look good. They also confer some protection in the event of a fall or a close encounter with low trail-side brush.

These gloves are not suitable for hand numbness and have no trace of gel. I don't blame the gloves for the numbness issue since flared/platformed hand grips (like Ergons or mtb bar-ends) are more suitable for that purpose. However, advertising the gloves as "gel" is a stretch to say the least.

I secured my intended use out of them and they look good (3 stars). I docked the gloves 1 star due to the misleading gel title. I docked another star for the consequential overpriced nature of otherwise basic cycling gloves. Good? Yes. Great? No.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better then most others., September 14, 2011
By Rocky (Ohio)
I own about five different brands of gloves and believe these gloves have great features that make it the top of the heap. I like the padding in the heal of the hand which is not too much nor to little. I bought two different pair of gloves of Amazon that were rated very high, and these gloves are designed with ruggedness and articulation more than the other... I usually don't like velcro under the wrist, due to involuntary contact with skin, but the design on this pair never has contact with my skin.
I would highly suggest this pair of gloves.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  High quality construction and a great fit, April 20, 2011
By Renegade
I have only had these one day, but I am really impressed. They are very comfortable, or at least way more comfortable than riding with bare hands. These are even more comfy than my motorcycle gloves the are replacing. The palms on the motorcycle gloves didn't hold up past a year, I will see how these do and have much hope because the material looks way stronger. The little grippers on the palm are super nice too, you feel glued to the bars, lots of control. I was worried about how they would fit, but even with my big hands and wrists, a large fit perfectly, it does stretch a bit but makes a snug and comfy fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Held up great until I crashed., October 26, 2011
By KB (New York)
Snug fit, no dumbness and easy to take off with the little tab thingy that is on them. Like the velcro closer that is on the pam side to give the more exposed part of the hand a sleeker look and feel. They held up great until a baloney eating ankle biting twirp got in my way on a NYC Greenway. Little runt on a retractable leash wearing long pants and knee pads (people in Queens know what I am talking about). I bought the farm palms first. Gloves destroyed, palms shredded, but not a scrape on my palms. Thanks Pearl Izumi!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  DON'T BUY THESE GLOVES, September 10, 2011
By L. Kushner (Andover, MA USA)
These are the worst set of Pearl Izumi gloves I have ever purchased. Even though they are call 'Select Gel', it turns out that PI makes multiple styles of gloves called 'select gel'. This model is 14141103, and is very uncomfortable and poorly made. It creates pressure points in multiple places, particularly between the thumb and index finger. PI makes another 'select gel' glove, model 8588, which is *much* more comfortable, and much better made. See [...]
Hope this helps.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  It is Better to Look Good than to Feel Good, October 16, 2011
By Paul Hill (Kaneohe, HI United States)
When I saw these gloves on-line I really liked the way they looked, and when I got them in the mail I was not disappointed with the styling. The material on the back side of the glove is a nicely styled, expansile polyester weave that feels good on your hand and breaths well. The plamar surface is a simulated leather-like material with small, strategically-placed gel pads that are about 1/8th of an inch thick. These pads, while not offering the cushioning factor the name implies, they nonetheless are designed to protect the joints which they do adequately. Where they fail is that they do not have enough gel to make you say, "Ooooooooo, cushy wonderful gel!". If they were twice as thick they would feel that way, but I think the gloves sacrifice cushioning for better grip control. That is the only short-coming of these gloves. They look great, fit snuggly, and have a nice litte notch on the 4th digit to help removing them. The gloves, as others have mentioned, are about 1-2 sizes smaller than you might expect so be sure to take this into account when ordering.

Pros: Great styling, sleek, snug fit.

Cons: Could use twice as much gel to offer better cushioning. Sizing is on the small-side.

If I had to do it all over again, I would just go to a bike shop and check out the gloves before buying so you know exactly what you are getting.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pearl Izumi Select Gel Cycle Glove, October 4, 2011
By CfC
When choosing a size ignore the sizing chart. The measurements are way off. If you normally fit an Xlarge then stick with it. The gloves are only a tad snug than normal sizes. They are a really comfortable fit with not too much gel. The material has a very soft feel. The stitching between the thumb and forefinger can initially press on the nerve but this is due to the glove bunching up a little when riding on the brake boots. Keep it straightened out while the glove rides in over time.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent product, would definitely recommend., September 1, 2011
By ORATAB
I would still consider myself as a beginner in the bicycling world. I've recently completed my first century ride, so I know how things can get after the 30 mile mark...

I purchased these gloves after wearing out some Ironman cycling gloves. Ironman gloves are very well padded, and have a lot more gel, but because of the same, after modest usage, the gel gives in, and you're left with pretty much an unusable set of gloves.

I opted to try the Pearl Izumi, since I like how their products fit and wear, and I must say I'm impressed. These don't seem as strongly padded, nevertheless the effect is quite surprising. I've worn these on 50+ mile rides, and my hands haven't gone numb, the padding is added just in the right places to protect the nerves in your hands; they work better than I actually expected them to.

The fit is tight and it just feels right. I highly recommend these to any serious rider.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pearl Izumi - Select Gel Glove, December 5, 2011
By Troy
I continue to purchase Pearl Izumi biking apparel from Amazon.com, as I find the quality
and value of their products excellent. The style and comfort of the select gel glove is
the the best, since I ride on average about 60-80 miles each weekend.

I would recommend this product to all types of road bike riders.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  size too big, November 27, 2011

I had to return this product due to the big size. I have small hands and the product size is way too big for it. Beside; it is an ok product as much as it cost; the product is not as good as others.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  OJ Gel glove, November 15, 2011

The Gel padding is nice and squishy, and my hands feel great after my ride. They kept my hands warm, too, despite being finger-less. The orange color is very neat as well, and I imagine easy to see in the dark. Great gloves!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good gloves came covered in some sort of oil, November 9, 2011
By Joshua
Gloves work well and fit pretty comfortably. The Pearl Izumi logo on the front is hard plastic and makes it undesirable to wipe your face or nose on the back of the glove. I'm tall and have pretty large hands and the gloves are not as tight as I would have liked. The make a big deal of the pull tab but I find it pretty useless, it might be helpful if the gloves were a bit too tight.

On a side note, who ever sent these too me most have stored the gloves under some sort of oil storage. The gloves and tags were covered in an oil that reminded me of something I spilled in my jeep and could never get out of the carpets. They still smell and I doubt it will go away, that's part the reason for 3 stars and not 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  well designed gloves, October 29, 2011
By commuter
These gloves are great! I mostly just commute around town, and the longest I've used them at one time is about 40 minutes. I was using some old, non-padded gloves before, that just made my palms a little less sore, but with these my hands feel great! I bought these because my friends who ride recommended them, and I would too.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty good value, September 27, 2011
By jr (Texas)
I've had these gloves for about a month. Not much saddle time but enough to give first impressions. I ordered the Large and they were just slightly big on my 8 1/8 inch hands (meaning I would probably order a Medium next time). I wish the gel were a little bit thicker but it is placed well in the palm. These gloves mated with a reasonably "chunky" bar tape (I use Torelli Moda Chunky Gel) seems more than adequate. The velcro enclosure doesn't seem "sticky" enough and the mating contact area is rather small.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Odd pressure, July 13, 2011
By Onefungi
I really like the gloves, they added cushion where it was needed. Only there was an odd pressure after a few miles that started pushing into my hand by my thumb. It was uncomfortable, but I'm hoping after a few more miles it'll stretch out. Otherwise I have no issues.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent glove, May 31, 2011
By Kevin Page (Parkland, FL)
These gloves do the job, especially for the price. I will say after reading an earlier review they tend to run small. I ordered a large and they fit snug and usualy I would wear a medium. The velcro is easy to secure and the gloves comfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good gloves, but a size larger than you normally would., May 28, 2011
By Greg Hershberger (Wilmington, NC USA)
The gloves work well and feel comfortable. Just make sure you go up one size bigger than you normally would. I went XXL, and I have average male hands. The XL's fit, but they were a little too tight for me. I would normally wear an XL glove.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  fist Pearl Izumi product dissappointment, February 28, 2012
By tom
i tried these and the ones w/o gel in the name. they are both pretty bad and not nearly and nice as my old PI's now unavailable. first, the fit is way to snug (i have medium sized hands and the Large doesn't fit properly). the gel is almost nonexistent and for me, in all the wrong places. And they don't appear to be made particularly well either. a disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great pair of gloves!, February 22, 2012
By Great Santini (FL)
These gloves are great- coming from non-gel gloves, it's a real big night and day difference when you do move to them. Vibrations on the handlebars are alot less noticable, and my hands hurt alot less. They fit like a glove, no pun intended. The mediums do fit snug like a medium, so don't over/under size them when you're deciding.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Gel Gloves, May 15, 2012
By RCK (Colorado)
Sizes are a bit small (the large was a tight fit). The gel pads don't really do all that much more than regular padding, so if you care about cost and performance, I would recommend just get regular gloves.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Size Runs Small - order next one up, May 25, 2012
By Louis de Geofroy (Martha's Vineyard)
Every other pair of gloves I have ever owned were a large. When I got my first pair of these I squeezed into them and felt like OJ Simpson, very little blood got to my fingertips. Amazon kindly replaced them (I think free shipping) and the XLs fit... well... like a glove (sorry). I will report back after I road test them.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Buy a size larger, May 22, 2012
By thegnosisarchive (Salt Lake City, UT USA)
Nice gloves, but they are sized small. I wear a 7 1/2 sized surgical glove. I usually wear a large bike glove or work glove. With these, the X-Large just fits me -- it is snug, but right. If my hand were even a touch larger (size 8) I certainly would have need the next bigger size. And I have never tried to buy a glove without trying it on at the store. So thanks to others here who recommended going a size bigger. Yes, indeed.

This is a well made glove. I usually avoid palm-side closures on bike gloves, because they usually are uncomfortable to the inner wrist (Velcro can rub), and are difficult to re-fasten while riding. The closure on this glove is comfortable, well-designed, and does not rub at all. The pull tab on the ring finger should make the gloves last longer, and works well - I usually end up tearing the fabric after a few years from pulling them off, so this seems a good design idea. These are keepers. I like them.
