Lovely Bike; Needlessly Annoying Assembly, December 16, 2009
By goonius (a room in a house on a street in a city just like any other.)
|
|
We bought this bike for our daughter's 4th birthday next month. I wanted two things out of a bike:
1. No corporate marketing of Disney Princesses, Dora-the-(dead-eyed)-Explorer, or Barbie. *shudder* This is more difficult to find than you might think.
2. A bike that was high enough quality as to encourage riding, and make it a pleasure, rather than rendering it a tedious task soon to be given up.
I think this bike fits the bill on both counts, though as my child has yet to ride it, I don't know much about how well it functions. I will update post-gifting with my impressions that way.
Here are my initial impressions of the pros and cons:
Pros:
- This bike is gorgeous. The style is very retro circa 1950's, with the full, generous, shock-absorbing seat, the 50's aqua (it's definitely more aqua than the baby blue it appears to be in the photo) and salmon-pink accents on the wheels and flowers. The other accent colors are black, white - and in the center flourish there is a champagne-tan color as a backdrop to the pink and white flowers. All the designs on the bike have a glittery appearance that sort of shines in the light. The seat, too is embellished with a scant floral design in pink and white, as are the fenders - these things I found difficult to discern in the photos.
- I love that the tires are primarily black, so that when they make contact with the dirty ground they won't instantly be rendered used and filthy looking.
- The bike, from all appearances looks as if it would be very comfortable and easy to ride.
Cons:
- There really are no instructions. Zero. There's a really bad photo of the training wheel assembly that you won't be able to glean any information from, and a 'users manual' with lots of tips about not riding at night, and how dangerous that is, and always wearing a helmet, and even a thorough layout of a brake system that this bike doesn't have, but there's not a single detail about how you're supposed to assemble this thing.
I've never assembled a bike before, so I found this especially daunting, and it took me an hour and a half... which isn't terrible, all things considered.
Thankfully, the bike does come partially assembled. It is the buyers job to assemble the training wheels, which after a few mishaps I discovered needed to lock into an existing piece on the rear wheel. The front fender (that's what that strange u-shaped metal bar is for) and wheel, seat, handlebars (which also must be adjusted to the correct angle), pedals, and a couple reflectors that you have to guess on the intended location of. There are tools that come with the bike - 4 Allen wrenches and a double-sided wrench that fits the majority of the bolts, but I still needed a Phillips head and ratchet for miscellaneous other bolts and to occasionally hold something in place while tightening the other side.
I think I managed to get it put together correctly. It seems study, but I would have loved some validation on this point, as I am a complete novice at assembling bikes.
- The bike, as other reviewers mentioned, arrived with a few minor scratches. Seems to me, had it been protected a little better in shipping, this wouldn't have happened.
-The flower stickers were not applied as well as I would have hoped. There are a few areas where there were small bubbles under the stickers around the edges, and they couldn't be smoothed. I think this will effect the longevity of the appearance of the stickers, as dirt will get under them and cause them to peal.
- I wish the bike wasn't made in China. Not a totally unexpected detail, but I personally prefer things to be made anywhere but China.
One more tidbit of note is that the colors of the bike are unusual and would be difficult to match, and that's worth considering if you're ordering accessories. If you order baby blue or something in the standard pink range, it'll probably clash.
I knew I wanted a Giro helmet, and so we bought the Lucille the Bike Giro Rodeo helmet alongside it, and thankfully, the range of color in that helmet allowed for it to match - perfectly - though the styles are a little different, but there aren't really any helmets with a 50's look anyway. A plain black or white helmet would look nice alongside it too.
We bought white streamers and I'd recommend that anyone else buying streamers do the same. The bike has just enough white that the white streamers look like they 'belong'. Our other accessories are chrome and black, and look like they were made for this bike. I'm so glad I decided to stay way from the pink and blue spectrum!
I know, probably overkill in the information department, but when you're spending this much money, it makes sense to have a better idea of what you'll be getting.
All in all, I'm pretty pleased with this bike. If you want something different, there really aren't any other options, especially in this price range - I spent a lot of time researching.
I can't wait to see my daughter's reaction come her birthday. I think she'll love it. I mean, who wouldn't? This really is a hip little ride for youngsters :)

Fantastic Bike, October 14, 2009
By Hula Kaiser

This bike is a fantastic bike for the price. My husband put the bike together in about a half hour. The one single sheet of instructions was not the best in helping put the bike together but managed with what he had with success. Our 5 year old daughter loves the color and enjoys the bike very much. Fits her perfect! It's a well built bike that will give our little one many fun & safe days of riding.

Best bike on the market!, January 9, 2010
By CA Mom of 2 (CA Mom of 2)

We purchased this bike for our 4-year-old for Christmas. We originally picked it out because it looked cute and wasn't plastered with princess decals or some other character theme. We tried it out in a sports store first and immediately noticed how sturdy and well-built the bike was. Our daughter felt secure with the training wheels, they are not "tippy" like those on other models. She LOVES the bike. It was the hit of Christmas and she still rides it every day. We love the bike too. The attention to detail is fabulous...things like the fenders and white-wall tires are just so cute! It rides really well and we can see her loving this bike for a long time. My FIL and hubby put the bike together (both engineers) and both commented on how sturdy and well-built all of the parts are. We are 100% satisfied with this product!!

Take it to a bike shop!!!, July 19, 2010
By Scott Dedenbach (Manchester, Michigan, US)
|
|
I'll preface by saying that I "luckily" am a bike mechanic. I bought this bike along with a Miz Della Cruz for a friends 2 daughters. I like that they are not branded with "Barbie" or Hanna Montana or something.
The state of these bikes coming out of the box is terrible. EVERYTHING on these bikes is over tightened!! One wheel was overtightened to the point of almost not turning. While there was no shipping damage to the bikes I get the impression that they were just thrown into the box. The Mini had 3 of the little tool sets that they include for assembly. After completing the assembly of the Miz, I was disappointed when one of the tires went flat. Upon taking it apart to replace the tube I discovered that the tube was twisted and balled up and basically just thrown into the tire. It required that I go buy a new tube and fix it properly. Also the front fork on the Miz was too small for the front hub and had to be forced apart slightly to get it to fit. The Miz was also missing a reflector screw.
I think the bikes are overall quality kids bikes but would recommend you take them to a bike shop that knows what they are doing and can properly put them together. Who know what might be wrong with the ones you order.

Pure Quality Kid's Bike!, December 14, 2009
By Jennifer Byrnes (Gainesville, FL)
|
|
My husband and I did a lot of research for a bike for our 4 1/2 year old daughter. We wanted something that was strong, safe, and durable but pretty too. Everywhere we looked it was barbie this and princess that, which don't get me wrong, my daughter loves them too but when is enough...enough already! We got the bike the other day and pulled it from it's box to find that there weren't many directions but the bike was practically already assembled. What little assembly left to do was quite simple with our without directions. Once put together it is obvious that the quality is pure Diamondback. My husband and I both have owned our own Diamondbacks in the past and have always loved their products. This bike is even cuter in person than in pictures! We are thrilled and can't wait to see her face on Christmas morning.

Great Bike -- Horrible Assembly Instructions, June 18, 2010
By A. Stephens
|
|
This is a wonderful little bike: sturdy, looks good, and easy to ride. However, the assembly instructions (or lack thereof) leave something to be desired. The instructions included with the bike were for an adult-sized mountain bike. Not extremely helpful. After much trial-and-error, I was able to assemlble the bike using my daughter's other Diamondback bike as a guide.
Also, the packaging used to ship the bike is sub-par. When I received the bike, certain parts (like the fenders) were dented, scratched, and bent, and some screws were missing altogether (they were all just floating around in the box, which had huge holes in it). Thin pieces of cardboard and tape were the only packing material inside the box, so all the pieces rubbed and banged together.
Amazon customer service was no help at all, but Diamondback customer service was exceptional!!! They acknowledged that a certain allotment of bikes was sold to Amazon and that they have received many complaints from Amazon customers about the quality of the packaging to ship the bikes. Missing pieces and damaged parts were all replaced by Diamondback via overnight FedEx.

Great bike - no assembly instructions, October 3, 2009
By singlemama (Georgia USA)
|
|
Bought this bike for my daughter for her fourth birthday. Shipping was super fast, box was not damaged, however the bike frame did have some scratches on it when opened. At this price range, touch up paint should be included with the purchase. The one page instructions included were for another bike model, and detailed placing frame pads on it. If you are familiar with bikes, it should pose no problem. Overall I am happy with my purchase.

Great bike!, July 4, 2010
By baby2nr (East Bay, CA)

We got this bike for my daughter's pre-school graduation. We shopped around and was originally thinking of getting a small bike from Wal-mart or Toys R Us. We are so glas that we spent the extra money to get her a Diamondback. My husband had a Diamondback when he was a kid, so he was a big promoter of getting this one. It's solid and sturdy, and not wobbly at all. Great buy!

Returned, August 11, 2010
By Stuart (Huntsville, AL)
|
|
After a lot of research, ordered this bike for our 4-year old daughter. Assembly was not overly complicated, but when I got to installing the seat, I noticed it was sitting crooked, slanted to one side, as another reviewer had mentioned. After disassembling the seat assembly, I discovered that the metal railings under the seat were welded in such a way that the seat was permanently canted to the side. Also, despite the significant packaging, there were numerous spots on the frame that showed scratches and scuffing. A really nice looking bike, otherwise, but chose to send it back due to those two problems.

My daughter loves this bike, but......, April 25, 2010
By Gaby's mom (Petaluma, Ca.)
|
|
We ordered this bike for my four year old daughter. I knew she'd love it as we test drove it at another store. The night before her birthday, my husband planned to put it together. The directions are for another bike. That didn't matter as my husband rarely uses directions anyway. Here was the kicker. The medal front part that attaches to the front wheel (sorry don't know what it is called) was not wide enough to attach to the wheel....by over an inch. My husband had to pull and stretch it out. Finally, he got it together. My daughter loves the bike and it very sturdy. Just plan on putting it together before a birthday just in case it is flawed like this one.

Perfect "real" first bike for my 4yr old twin girls, October 22, 2011
By SoCal Dad
|
|
I have purchased bikes at toys r us before and was not happy with the quality, so i went on a mission to find a quality bike for my twins 4th bday present. Started with a local bike shop (performance bikes) but the bikes they carried in 16" size were mostly schwinn and not well constructed. Went to another that sells Elecktra cruisers, but the 16" was over $300! Finally started searching the web and found these bikes. I know Diamondback makes good products and the reviews were good so i decided to go for it. They cost about twice what the bikes at toysrus cost, but we have found you get what you pay for. My girls love them and ride them everyday. Not only are they well built, but they are easy to put together. They are also easy to ride and very stable because the training wheels are sturdy and are built very close to the ground. Lastly, they are very cute! Could not be happier with this purchase!

Awesome!, October 17, 2011
By alan o'connor

This is a fantastic bike. As others have mentioned, the instructions are for general bike assembly and not specific to this bike. However, assembly is a snap. The quality is great and the styling is very cool. I like that the tires that came on the bike aren't the ones pictured. It comes with black tires with big fat whitewalls that play off of the light blue rims perfectly. We added the Avenir flower basket and my daughter can't get enough of this thing.

Good looking Bike, September 5, 2011
By Big daddy
|
|
Overall I'm happy with the purchase, however there was a sizable defect in the paint. The directions were not step by step and rather vague leaving it up to the assembler to figure it out. Given the price on this bike, I really expected it to be in perfect condition and assembly to be low on frustration, not the case. However, I'm not going to take it apart and send it back.

Great Bike!!!!, July 6, 2010
By Stef
|
|
Purchased the bike for my daughter's 4th birthday and it is fabulous!!! She loves riding it and it is quite easy for her to handle. The only reason for a 4 star review and not a 5 star one is due to the fact that there were no directions for the bike. There were small ones for another bike. However, most of the bike comes assembled and the rest seems to be rather intuitive to figure out the remainder. We are all extremely pleased with the purchased and would not hesitate to recommend this bike to anyone!!!!!

Great bike, terrible directions, not ready-to-ride after assembly, April 23, 2010
By SamK (Vermont)
|
|
Pros : Great bike overall, very attractive without silly little trinkets.
Cons : TERRIBLE generic manual. Tools needed go way beyond the few tools included. Even when assembled, both wheel bearings were way over tightened meaning : if you have the skills to micro-adjust bike bearings, OK, if not, off to a bike store to spend the money saved by using Amazon. The headset bearings were also way, way over tightened and needed to be loosened with large wrench and channel locks. It would seem that most people without fairly advanced bike mechanical skills (and tools) would want to get a ready-to-ride bike at a local bike store.
But : Diamondback customer service was very good.

Cool kids bike!, April 12, 2010
By Lily's Mom (USA)
|
|
My daugther just received this for her 5th birthday and LOVES IT! She wants to be a big girl so asked that we not put the traning wheels on the bike - so my only wish would be a kickstand (which we'll add - no problem). It's adorable and very retro looking. I would love the same bike for "Mommy"! We added a little white basket and white handle bar streamers and the blue daisy bell (very cute). Seems like a great quality bike and should hopefully last for until she outgrows it! **Only complaint: The bike arrived 3 days before her party and when we opened it, the bike was totally damaged - lot's of paint chips and it almost looked like it had been returned (and resent to us)! Not happy for a $150 bike!!. Luckily customer service at Amazon was awesome and they sent a new bike out the next day via overynight delivery(no extra charge) and it arrived about 3 hours before the party so grandpa & daddy had time to put it together and everyone was happy!

Cute bike, but not fun to ride, June 9, 2010
By Nicole D. Evans
|
|
This bike is very cute, but the stupid chain comes off all. the. time. It is so frustrating. We just got back from a bike ride and I had to fix the chain 3 times, the last time the chain was hopelessly loose and wouldn't stay on at all. Fortunately, I had a wrench with me and was able to slide the entire rear chain assembly back to tighten the chain (I don't know if that makes sense-I am no bike mechanic). Anyway, this happens frequently, I pretty much have to take the back of the bike apart, move everything around, and then over time it slides forward so the chain won't stay tight. I love the looks of the bike, but overall I hate the dumb thing.
Oh, and the seat is welded on crooked, so my poor little girl is always sliding off to one side, and since I don't know how weld, I guess we are stuck there. Maybe we just got a bad bike, as everyone else seems to love theirs, for now though, I would not buy this bike again.

The components in the box need to be reassembled before you can assemble this bike., November 1, 2011
By Red Riding Hood (Springfield)
|
|
Don't buy this unless you have a good set of bike tools.
I bought this for my 4-year-old who can ride without training wheels. We really like the handlebar and seat. The molded plastic pedals seem sort of slipery.
The problem with this bike is that the parts in the box were all extremely overtightened and the paint and stickers are really cheap. The headset, bottom bracket, and hubs would hardly turn until I readjusted them. The paint on the stem is really thick and prevented the stem from sliding down into the head tube until I sanded some of the paint off.
I am basing my rating (3 stars) on the assumption that a $50 Huffy would be 1 star, and a Giant Bella (a nice 20" bike only available from a bike shop) would be 5 stars.

So heavy that I'm afraid it will crush my child, October 16, 2011
By L. Monahan (Durham, NC, USA)
|
|
It is almost impossible to figure out how much a bike will weigh by shopping for it online. The specs tell you nothing. I really don't get this, but whatever. I bought this bike based on its amazing reviews, but no one mentioned that it is the "heavy as a tank" version of preschooler bicycles. Smartly, I followed the advice of many reviewers and bought it through a bike shop (popular three letter recreational store). They assembled it easy peasy. We just picked it up and were good to go. The bike itself is absolutely gorgeous. I was all the more thrilled after I added white pompoms on the handle bars, a natural basket up front, and a bell all from Amazon. (My daughter liked it too. She's four.)
Unfortunately, a month later, my husband, daughter, and I all agree that this bike is useless and is going back to the store. It is heavy, unwieldy, and requires a three-point turn where other 16" bikes do not (ie wide turning radius). It is difficult for my daughter to get it moving, especially on dirt/gravel and impossible to start it up on even a slight incline. We took my daughter to the store and she blasted around the place on a Novarra Stinger, moving like the it was an extension of her body. In comparison, the Diamondback cruiser is like the old, clunky original cordless phone from the 80s, where the Novarra was the latest iphone.
Thankfully, I bought the Diamondback Della Cruiser bike from a store that takes used returns, no questions asked. (Another reason not to buy a bike online. I called the store today and asked for advice on a light-weight bike that would not crush my daughter when she takes the inevitable tumble. The Novarra Firefly and Marin Tiny Trail were recommended to me. We are ordering the Marin because it comes in pink and that is apparently important to my daughter. Also, the Marin has an aluminum frame, which is the lightest frame you can get, and almost impossible to find in a kid's bike. The new bike will be delivered to the store and assembled for us prior to pick up.
I do not recommend the Diamondback Mini Della Cruiser bike for anything other than oooing and ahhhhing over its appearance. If you are buying a bike for your child, take into account how heavy it is.

Great bike for my little girl!!, September 4, 2011
By Joe Rocket

|
What a deal folks! Price is right for what you get. The first shippment on this bike, the rear fender was scaped up, and forks too. However, Amazon was on it!! Sent me a new bike with a UPS call tag to send the old one back. Just that easy.
Again, this bike was easy to put together if you have a few basic skills and tools. If not, ask a neighbor. Diamondback has been around for a long time, and these bikes are SOLID. My little girl loves this bike, and it rides great!

Nice Bike, September 1, 2011
By Booklover (California)
|
|
We chose this bike mainly because of the Diamondback name and quality of their products; my son had one and after nine years of use it has held up well. This was a surprise birthday present for my daughter who loves it. The Colors are true to what you see in the picture. My husband would have prefered that the training wheels be rubber, but admitted they were of a much better quality than the plastic ones on bikes at Toys R US, Target, etc. Would have been nice if it had a basket, bell and streamers, which all little girls seem to want, but were able to purchase and add; which is why I gave it 4 stars. Assembly was easy according to my husband. Overall, Great bike.

Great Bike, Couple Flaws, July 9, 2011
By Wickerman (Denver, CO)
|
|
Well made, solid, great looking bike. Couple flaws in my mind...the thing weighs a ton. It's as heavy as a full size bike easily. The frame must be made of lead. Also, it appears that the crankset threads are the same on both sides where as most full size bikes have opposite threads so that your pedal doesn't loosen with the natural forward motion. My daughter's pedal repeatedly came loose which is dangerous. I finally put some silicone on the threads. Other than that, it's a great bike.

Bought my daughter a new bike, March 24, 2011
By Boricuaballer21

I had some issues with this product. I had to pay extra to have the training wheels be put on. Even the guys at the store with their equipment had a hard time doing it. The handle bar cannot be tighten so at times the handle bar will go off center. The other problem is that the pedals kept falling off. The bike looks great but the defects of the bike was not worth the trouble or the amount. I would not recommended to anyone.

Excellent bike, tricky to assemble, July 16, 2010
By Walter

Perfect bike for my 4 yr old. The bike arrived in 2 days and, although the packaging was damaged, the bike itself was in perfect condition. As others have already mentioned, the assembly instructions are far from perfect, but with pacience and creativity was not difficult to put toghether. Actually, there's a reason why the box says that the bike should be sold assembled...
All in all, excellent bike, sturdy, well constructed and looks incredible. Shipping was perfect and took only 2 days. Would purchase again.

Every waking moment my (4) year old daughter wants to ride this bike, I think she rides it in her sleep! It is so cute, easy to assemble and everyone comments how cute! I purchased a woven basket from Amazon to go with it...and she loves taking her dollies for a ride!

love this bike, June 9, 2010

we bought this for my daughters 4th birthday. My husband put it together when i wasn't home, he is pretty handy and didnt have any complaints. Our daugter loves it. It took her all of a day to really figure out how to ride it well. She is average size for age and fits her well. Training wheels seem really sturdy (although after one week she thinks she is ready to take them off like her older cousins :)
Bike is simply adorable. I anticipate it will last her several years and then be passed on the the younger sister.

Great bike: useless assembly guide., December 22, 2011

I appreciate that Diamondback wanted to cover as many of their cycles as possible in one set of instructions, but if you haven't assembled bikes before,it's going to be a real challenge to put this puppy together based on what's provided.
If you are a novice, take it to a bike shop.
If you've put bicycles together before, you'll have to rely on experience and the photos of the finished product to make it work.
That said, this is an amazing bike for little people. It's sturdy, well-made, and just plain lovely.
I'm super happy I bought it.
But, that said, if you're giving this as a gift, only give it unassembled to someone who knows bikes, or put it together if you know how, or take it to a shop.
Giving it straight out of the box to non-mechanical folks or cycle newbies is just mean.

Solid, but heavy., December 12, 2011

We're not buying this bike in the end because our young 3 year old (38 months) is on the small side, and the large saddle on the Della Cruz makes it a poor fit for small children. In fact, it's just not a good idea to buy a bike without having your kid try a few different ones. Besides having the saddle be low enough that your little one can easily get on and off, you should be sure they're able to comfortably pedal through the vertical pedal alignment position. This bike was harder than most for ours to start from that position because her higher knee was too bent. In the end, the Specialized was the clear winner, which was a bummer since it's certainly more expensive! It (the hotrock) is also the only aluminum frame bike we found in the 12" size, so while the Della Cruz is quite heavy, it's not moreso than the competition, Specialized excepted. One final note: the pedals (at least on the floor model we tried) are ridiculous - flower shaped. The shape comes at a certain expense of function in all honesty.

Adorable Bike, March 30, 2012

I just received this today. It is a birthday present for my soon-to-be-five year old daughter. I love it. I think she will love it. The bike, itself, looks perfect. She hasn't ridden it yet, so I will update the review if there are any problems, but I think it will be fine.
The box was completely ripped open, top and bottom, with a hole in the side, when I got it today. I don't know what happened during delivery, but it must have been rough. Other than missing one nut, however, everything was fine. The bike was packaged really well, and didn't have any problems even with the awful handling.
As for the assembly, the other reviews are correct-- the instructions are practically useless. That said, I put it together in two hours, and I am neither an engineer nor a bike mechanic. Just a mom with plenty of experience putting together Ikea furniture. Believe me, if you can tackle Ikea instructions, you can do this. Just use common sense.

My daughter LOVES this bike!, October 16, 2011
By L. Monahan (Durham, NC, USA)

This is an updated review after owning this bike for over five months. I previously gave it a 2-star review due to my perception that it seemed heavy and unwieldy. I have since changed my opinion.
This is a beautiful bike. It is well-made and holds up well to all the frequent falls of my preschooler. We compared this bike in the store to the Novara Firefly, the Marin MBX, and the Electra Hawaii and we chose the Diamondback Mini Della Cruz Cruiser for the following reasons:
We liked the cruiser-style cushy seat (Novara Firefly and Marin MBX do not have this) The handlebar was close enough to the seat for my daughter to easily reach it (not so with Marin MBX) The tires are black with thick tread, so good for riding on muddy trails (not so with Electra Hawaii) It weighs within 2 lbs of the Novara Firefly and Marin MBX. The Firefly is the heaviest and the MBX is the lightest. Della Cruz is in the middle. It is pink. My daughter insisted.
I wish I had not originally compared the weight of this bike to my daughter's Strider balance bike, which she's had since she was 2-yrs-old. This is a different class of bike and deserves separate consideration. When compared to other bikes of its class, it holds up well and fit our needs perfectly. Since removing the training wheels, my daughter rides it with ease and I am very pleased with our choice.
We did not buy this bike through Amazon. We bought it through a bike shop that would assemble it for us, since multiple reviewers recommended that it is not worth dealing with bike assembly. I agree! It was a relief to go and pick up a fully assembled bike from a shop that throws in the first tune-up for free. And it did not cost more to have it assembled.

Quality bike!, May 26, 2012

We ordered this for my daughter who is 6, but small for her age. She loves it! The pink is a brighter pink than it shows up in pictures, it's more a hot pink. But it looks fun, and has cute decals on it too, and best of all, there is not one princess, Dora, or character on it! I was very impressed with the quality of it, there was nothing flimsy about it like so many little bikes. The seat is a nice wide comfort seat, and has a great design on it too. The "instructions" don't instruct much, use it more as a guide for general bikes.

good but expensive, May 24, 2012

its a very nice bike with good weight. We looked at cheaper options that were indeed CHEAPER. I wanted good weight and a durable bike for my daughter - what I was finding at Target, Walmart and like-minded stores were cheap, flimsy bikes. This is double the price but well worth the extra money - this reminds me of the bikes I had as a kid; heavy and durable. I'm happy with it but the price was larger. If it was $20-$30 cheaper it would be a really great buy.
