Protect your bike from theft wherever you roam with the Kryptonite Evo Mini 7 U-shaped bicycle lock. Equipped with a 4-foot KryptoFlex looped cable in addition to the lock itself, the Evo Mini 7 is an ideal choice for urban environments and college campuses. The lock's strength stems from the 13mm hardened Max-Performance steel shackle, which is designed to resist bolt cutters and leverage attacks. The shackle is 1.5 inches longer than previous incarnations, so you have plenty of room to wrap the cable around your front wheel and lock it securely. Cyclists will also love the innovative EZ-Mount transportation system, which fits on the adjustable spline and allows for multiple offset fitments to better align the lock for transportation.

The Evo Mini 7 boasts a 9 ranking on the Kryptonite 1-12 comparison system, which ranks the varying levels of security within the company's product range. A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. A 9, by contrast, isn't the toughest rating on the Kryptonite scale, but it's pretty darned close. Other security-enhancing features include a high-security Bent Foot design, a reinforced cuff over the hardened crossbar and cylinder that protects the disc-style cylinder; and a center keyway that defends against leverage attacks. As a bonus, the lock includes three stainless-steel keys, including one with a high-intensity LED bulb for convenient, easy unlocking in the dark. The lock measures 7 by 3.25 inches.

About Kryptonite
In the early 1970s, Michael Zane was a free-spirited, bearded kid with a VW van and a big idea for a new kind of lock. He traveled thousands of miles showing the unique U-shaped locking device and spreading his passion for bicycle security to bike dealers all around the country and forged lifetime relationships. The company soon expanded its product line to include power sports, hardware, and snow sports security. Through innovative product designs, cutting-edge marketing savvy, legendary customer service, and pure fanaticism for security, Kryptonite grew with a cult-like following. In 2001, the company that was started in a VW van was purchased by industry giant Ingersoll Rand and became a flagship brand in the company's Security Technologies sector. Publications such as Bicycling, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, and a host of others continued to tout Kryptonite products as the best on the market.

The company's dedication to its customers is best represented by its actions during the fall of 2004, when it was discovered that the industry-standard tubular cylinder could be compromised, at times, with a household item. Kryptonite flew into action, created a voluntary lock exchange program, and replaced more than 400,000 locks in 21 countries for free. In essence, the company redesigned the equivalent of nine years worth of new products in just 10 short months. Kryptonite is the only company in the world that offered such a comprehensive plan to customers, taking its "legendary customer service" pledge to new heights.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good all round value, April 20, 2011
By io
Where I live and commute (Brisbane, AU), most people with bikes pricier than mine (at least in public) use a cheap cable lock around only the frame or wheel (occasionally there'll be one that goes through both wheels and frame). Others might have a big U-lock around just the frame which looks like a combination of inconvenience and lower security. Perhaps also worth keeping in mind is the fact that decent bike racks in good locations are not as common as old dodgy racks so the lock might only be half the game.

I didn't feel like pouring $30 towards a cable lock and locally, $60 can perhaps buy the Series 2 Std with cable; but at the US/AUD exchange rate in March 2011 the price of the Evo Mini-7 + cable hit a sweet spot in value and relative security.

Like what other internet people say, the mounting bracket isn't great but it hasn't been working too badly either (it gets easier to use with a little practise). Because this is a mini 7" U-lock, it *does* fit neatly on the bike which means I don't have to lug it in a backpack (tip: coil and cross the cable inside the U before you lock and mount it for easier transportation as per photo).

As for locking techniques; the clearance between my rear wheel and seat tube (with bottle cage installed) doesn't make the wheel rim + seat tube a possibility - this option is probably only effective with road bikes. I tend to prefer going for the left chain stay + rear wheel (shift to the large chain ring and smaller sprocket first for some more room). Left seat stay + wheel can also work depending on the bike rack. For lower theft areas, I'm also happy to have the U around the seat tube and cable through both wheels - handy for a quick lock up and it'll still be better locked than nearly all bikes around here. In case any might be about to mention it, I choose to avoid the "Sheldon Brown locking method" especially since I have the cable for the wheel(s) anyway - search YouTube and reddit for more details.

If I could, I'd give 4.5. I can't really imagine there being any lock that's worth a full 5 stars since there's always room to nitpick or compromise be it security or convenience. There are probably fewer ideal locking locations for this lock but then if I used a different lock, I'd simply be less likely to leave my bike alone.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  The harness needs to go back to the drawing board., July 8, 2011
By ryansamuel
The lock itself works as it should and appears very secure. However, the bike attachment is only worth one star. It is basically a giant zip tie than is extremely difficult to install securely without feeling you'll damage your bike. It's even harder to get it off. It has a tiny rubber strap that is supposed to help make this fit better, but it's too small to make much a difference. In the rain this piece slipped from under the harness and the lock bounced around and damaged the paint on my new bike. Amazon was great and replace the whole product, but I'm leaving the harness alone. I'm no engineer but I could draw up a better harness in a snap.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Secure but frustrating, February 10, 2012
By deprotinator (Sandy Eggo, CA)
I'm rating this product on 2 aspects. Security=5 stars. I guess until someone breaks it, there's no reason to doubt this thing is secure. The U-Lock size is just barely big enough to lock my rear tire & seat tube to a street parking pole. And I mean BARELY (on my road bike). Don't think about lazily leaning your bike down or locking up a friend's tires or anything like that. And I can't imagine how this would fit over a mountain bike with the bigger tires and frame diameters. So if you have a mountain bike, this is probably not for you. However, the small size ADDS to the security rating since thieves can't fit anything inside the U to try to pry it apart. Like I said before, 5 stars...until someone finds a way to break it.

Now the bad news. The 2nd aspect I'm rating: Bike Mounting Mechanism=1 star. The plastic "easy mount" sucks. I struggled with it for about an hour before giving up. The end of the latch that looks like it should be latched on to the bike frame is in reality WAY TOO STIFF to conveniently push on and tighten down. My advice: if you choose to mount this thing, disassemble the end with the allen screw first. Push on the other end with the teeth, but don't push in too many teeth (they're impossible to pull back out). Just push on 1 at a time and check it on your frame to see how it fits. Once you got a decent fit, then put the mount on the frame and re-assemble the end with the allen screw. Again, don't push in too many teeth until you check the fit on your frame because once you push in a tooth, it's impossible to pull back out. The flimsy "release mechanism" will break before you can release any of the teeth out. Horrible design overall. Very disappointed. I'm committing to carrying my lock in a bag now whenever I need to take it with me. The lock is not too heavy and it doesn't really weigh down my bag too much.

The cable lock is just a standard cable lock. Nothing too special. 4' is the perfect size for going around my front tire and locking it to the U-Lock which goes around my rear tire.

Good lock but beware of the poor mounting mechanism.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best Compact U-Lock, April 13, 2011
By Kevster
Great addition to the Kryptonite U-lock line. The extra 2" is a plus to the original 5" mini, which means more locking options.

Good combination with the Flex cable for added security. Put the lock through the rear wheel and seat stays and attach the cable for the front tire.

The mount, well as usual, it's not great.

This lock is shown with the white colored Kryptonite replacement skin (See photos). Since my wife opted to forgo the bike attachment, we used the whole length of the shackle with the skin.

We put black electrical tape over the orange covers on the cable to match the new skin and make it more neutral.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock for the price, March 6, 2012
By christopher
I ride my bike to class almost every day and after hearing of all the recent bike thefts on my campus I decided it was time to upgrade from my cheapo cable lock to something a little beefier. I received my Mini-7 in the mail last week (fast shipping as always with Amazon) and so far it's been everything I expected it to be. I was a little worried the size might be an issue, having a mountain bike (trek fuel 100, see pic), but so far I haven't had any trouble finding something to lock it to. Definitely glad I went with this instead of the Evo Mini-5, as I feel that would've been too small for my bike. I also couldn't imagine lugging around the much heavier Fahgettaboutit lock (~5 lbs), which was another option I considered. The only complaint I have so far is that it was a PAIN to get the mounting bracket to attach to my frame. Maybe its just my bike, but I have the bracket mounted to the top tube and could barely get it to fit on its largest setting. Make sure you put at least a sliver of the rubber strip that it comes with between the bracket and the frame, otherwise it'll twist pretty easily. Other than that I have no complaints. The keys don't bother me at all, and the bracket seems to work as it should. The included cable also comes in handy for locking the front wheel.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Still the Best in Class!, February 21, 2012
By Kenneth Ervin Young (Palo Alto, CA)
Good News
1) Name brand product
2) Solid design

Bad News
1) None so far

A bike lock in not intended to replace common sense. Don't leave your bike on the street overnight with any one's lock - they can all be defeated. I would feel safe with this lock going into a restaurant or store for a few hours in a well lit location, which is what I bought it for - to 'deter' theft not to 100% prevent it - no bike lock will do this. Bright color and name brand will hopefully get thief to select another nearby bike to steal. Time will tell.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty nice, July 25, 2011
By lllllll
My main reason to buy this one over the other kryptonite U-locks was that it included and cable to lock my front wheel. After getting it, I find myself just using the U-lock without the cable.

Like other users said, the keys are kind of light weight. I didn't really believe it, but now I see what they mean. It feels like they're made of graphite or something because I'm always fearful they will break off in the lock. I am really gentle whenever I put them in just to make sure they don't break off. Quite literally, the keys alone are enough to give it 3 stars instead of 5. If I spend 30$ + on a bike lock, shouldn't it come with a decent set of keys make of something that feels more sturdy? I'm not a materials person. Maybe they're stronger, but just they feel flimsy.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, but small, May 1, 2012
By Wicky
Bike locks are all about quality vs weight; you can make your bike very secure but motorbike locks are too heavy to carry. This shackle is the perfect compromise. It feels very solid and is half the weight of it's NY big brother. My only misgiving is that, unless I find the perfect piece of street furniture, it's often too small to fit the frame and wheel to a stationery object. 1 inch longer and it would be the perfect bike lock.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A Portion of Peace of Mind, January 15, 2012
By Lawrence Evans (Richmon, CA)
I use this lock to secure two bicycles together in the garage, and I carry it with me when I ride the bike. So far it has given me a feeling of preparedness, knowing that I can lock my bike to a thin pole if I ever need to step into a rest room for a few minutes. Being able to carry the lock in my back pocket is convenient. The u-lock seems to be long enough for me to lock the frame and the front wheel to some of the bike racks that I have seen. I would use this lock for indoor locking and outdoor locking for a few hours (non-overnight) only in the daytime.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product, December 19, 2011
By Cali
This is one of the best deals on Amazon. You get the industrial standard U-lock and a nice cable to lock up your front or back wheel. The Fuhggetaboutit u-lock (which we also purchased from Amazon) is higher-guage material, but for day-to-day use, I prefer this lock, as it's not nearly as heavy. You can also stuff it into your belt (ala Silverlake hipster) for easy transport. The key works just fine and there's a cover for the keyhole when not in use. All in all, a great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect size u-lock. Lose the cable., November 22, 2011
By NoCoast
Perfect size for capturing the rear wheel, seat stays, and most bike racks/signposts while still being small enough to fit in your back pocket. If you have wheels deeper than Velocity deep v's (30mm) or run a rear brake, consider either a wider lock or using the 5" Kryptonite evo mini and the Sheldon Brown (securing the rear wheel inside the rear triangle to a signpost) method.

I'm convinced that cables function solely to make bike thieves smile. Do not let your bike out of your sight when "secured" whole, or in part, with a cable. Instead of capturing the front wheel with the cable, consider using a 5" evo mini or another 7" if you have oversized frametubes or super deep wheels and locking the wheel to the downtube.

Hope this is helpful to anyone unsure about which size to go with.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best Lock+ best customer service, November 2, 2011
By ottleyfhsu
This lock is very sturdy and very easy to use. If I ever saw this on a bike I would know that the owner is serious about security. The mount that came with this lock was defective, however, I emailed kryptonite customer service about the problem and I was immediately sent a replacement! The replacement is much more sturdy. If you are between two brands, go with kryptonite for the customer service alone. Highly recommended lock!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Tough Little Lock, Nice Cable, October 20, 2011
By Chemistry Fan
This u-lock/cable pair is great. I was hesitant to get the Mini-7, but since moving to a neighborhood with a higher crime rate, I felt my cable lock was going to end up on some bike thief's short list, and I dislike using larger u-locks and having my bike tip over in a crowded bike rack. My commute is to areas of high biking density (university campus and downtown hospital), where it is a huge convenience to have a cable lock to facilitate parking against trees and telephone poles: the 4' cable that comes with the u-lock keeps my options open--in which case I use the u-lock to attach the front wheel to the frame, wrapping the cable around the trunk/pole. My bike is a '70s Peugeot Mixte, no shocks or anything and relatively slim 27" tires, but it is impossible to u-lock the front wheel, the frame and a post all together; it's got to be the back if I want to get a wheel into the u-lock along with the frame and a parking meter/bike rack/street sign, if there's time to tinker with the geometry; in this respect, the cable really complements the smaller u-lock.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock but bracket is terrible, September 22, 2011
By kayak fishing (Anaheim, CA)
This is a well made a sturdy lock as you would expect from Kryptonite but the bracket is horrible. Mounting it on the top bar interferes with the rear brake cable (brake won't work) unless you don't tighten it and then the lock slides and swings of course. Can't find a way to take it off to mount in another location either. Emailed Kryptonite's customer service on how to do this but no reply so where's the service?

Nice that it comes with the cable. The lock is worth a 4.5 but because of the bracket and service I can't go above 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Mini-7 U-Lock, September 8, 2011
By JavonBKLYN
First off, I received the item in the no time with the basic shipping service. I believe it took, 2 or 3days to come. Back to the product. I still own my bike so that helps, lol. It's the perfect size and it comes with the Flex Lock. I wouldn't put all my heart into the flex lock in protecting much, its just there to 'slow' down the thief. You can not be possibly mad at a little extra security. Take advantage of the warranty that comes with it, if not they will not acknowledge the insurance claim. In short, get this item over the normal 5' inch U-lock the extra length allows you to lock up around bigger poles etc. Thank you.

thought this was the only bike lock you could get. turns out, it's only so popular because it's the best. i feel safe in my city with a high bike theft rate. i use the cable to lock both my and my boyfriend's bikes together and it's plenty of length. comes with three keys, one of them with a little light which is pretty neat. great lock must purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  convenient to carry, May 23, 2012
By rtgymnast
This little guy is awesome. The bracket that came w it to carry it was easy to install and I found a place on the bike that allows for it to snap on without the lock getting in my way.
It might be a bit small to get it to lock into any bike stand or awkward object, but you just have to be creative.
The cable that comes w it is also a bit short but if you practice a bit you'll learn exactly how to get both wheels and the u-lock locked together.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great size, May 18, 2012
By Ben
I got this for locking up my bike in the Bay area and it's done the job beautifully. The u-lock is just the right size to lock my bike and leave very little wiggle room for a crowbar and the cable is good for looping my front wheel for a bit of added protection, no worries so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Almost perfect, April 26, 2012
By El Dua (San Juan, PR)
Thankfuly I have not had any problems where I park my bike at work, but this looks like a very sturdy and strong lock so it should be a good deterrent for oportunity thiefs. Overall I feel safe leaving my bike parked anywhere (for a few hours) when I use this lock, my only complaint and thus the 4 stars is that the cable is not long enough to secure the wheels. I wanted to use it to lock the back wheel with the U-lock and pass the cable through the front wheel, but is not as long as I need it to be. I guess I should've known since it says is 4ft, but then why the cable? I mean, you can lock both the frame and the wheel with the U-lock only. In any case, I would highly recommend this lock if you are looking for a lightweight and strong U-lock to secure your bike for a few hours. For longer periods if time or if you live in a big city, go with the bigger locks.
