 Great Helmet, obscure sizing, September 5, 2010

I really like this helmet. I have already taken a few hard hits and it is going strong. I ride bmx and regularly hit 6' tall jumps. Protec has always been the helmet that I trust. I have received several concussions from tricks gone bad, but if I hadn't been wearing a helmet, it would have been a lot worse. The thing about the Protec classic skate helmet is the sizing. My head measures 23.2" around, which is the minimum in the xl size range, but the helmet is still relatively loose. The helmet stays on my head, but I would have preferred a slightly tighter fit. I also tried the large version of this same helmet, and it was way to tight. So if you are somewhere in between the size increments, the helmet won't fit perfectly. This is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Other than that, the helmet is perfect. And the green is really bright.

I was really excited to receive this helmet so I was quite disappointed to find that it was too small. It's a pretty small helmet so I guess it is an XL for a child because it is definitely not for an adult. The vendor did an excellent job getting this item out to me quickly so I would order from them in the future. Unfortunately, I will have to return this item because of the sizing.

I bought this thinking it was the Pro-Tec "Classic Skate" helmet, it is instead "The Classic" which has hard styrofoam instead of foam on the inside. I am trying to sell it now since Ambient weather makes you pay to ship exchanges. I guess there is a reason it was cheaper, but they should not advertise it as a "Classic Skate" when really it is not.

This helmet is awesome. It looks and fits great. I ride BMX and skateboard and that means nasty spills so gotta have a helmet! Comfortable and doesn't squeeze my head like other helmets do. Just one thing, make sure you know what size you take! Re-shipping this can cost you alot of money. No wonder Pro-Tec is the trusted name in helmets. Buy this now!!!

Not into BMX and tricks. More into mountain biking and downhill. Got this helmet for riding around street and trails. I just didn't want those helmets that everyone has (canadian tire mountain bike helmets LOL).
No complaints at all. I thought ventilation would be a problem but it's good enough for pounding on your pedals on trails under the sun. Sizing is good and fits well, I got the XL size. I usually wear 7 1/2 or 7 3/4 hats. Alot of quality and style all for a very good price. Awesome helmet from Pro-tec.

everything went smooth except the fact that in the picture of the helmet I saw when purchasing this helmet from amazon.com, it showed a helmet with the 2 stage foam padding but it didn't come with that kind of padding. Other then that great helmet and service. I Was told that the mess up in picture was amazons mistake not the suppliers (niagra cycle)

This year, I got a BMX bike for Christmas, and that means that I needed a helmet to go with it. I asked for a Pro-Tec Classic. All the pros use it, and it looks/works great. With short hair, it does look a little stupid. It looks like your head is getting squeezed. Let your hair grow out some more and it will look fine. Buy this helmet today.

The helmet is pretty good-looking. It is slightly bulkier than the typical non-bmx helmet but more comfortable. I feel like it ventilated fine, but logically it must ventilate a little less than a racing helmet. The only reason it gets 4 and not 5 is that it's bulkier than I imagined.

I love this helmet! The Matte Charcoal is a nice looking colour and the yellow straps are a cool accent (not to mention that they are extremely soft and never irritating) I would definitely recommend this helmet.

I made the mistake of ordering the size based on the exact measurements i got when following the recommended sizing procedure. When it arrived it was a full size too small. I looked online (should have done this first) and read that many people find Protec to run small. So i returned the Large i had purchased (Amazon made this process easy and seamless as usual) and ordered an Extra Large. It fits great and is really comfortable.

I brought this helmet for general biking purposes, just to and from work so luckily I can say I haven't had any spills on it yet BUT it is defiantly the most comfy helmet you could want for these trips, the straps are a big thing for me, these tubular webbing never tug or pull at your skin but at the same time can withstand large tugs and scratches. It somehow manages to look amazing as well. I can vouch for the safety of this helmet as well, while never falling on this one, I have the same design but in a white water make called the Pro-tec Ace water helmet which I have taken a number of rocks and trees to and it in the course of kayaking. It has has never shown a hint of damage while always protecting me. All in all Pro-Tec is a great company, these guys make nothing but helmets so they have a wealth of knowledge to bring to the design.

Cons -
- Maybe the high price but really money shouldn't be a factor in helmet purchase,

Ordered this for riding my Longboard and mountain bike. I could not have asked for a better fit, no helmet has ever fit perfectly until this one. As if a mold of my head was sent to the company. My head was 22 and some change inches around. Looks great too!

Bought this in a rush because I joined Hubway, Boston's bikeshare program, and kids insisted I wear a helmet. Didn't want the shiny, elongated type helmet and this fit the bill. I don't like that it sits high up on my head. I thought I could take out the padded liners, but the exposed velcro patches hurt too much without the padding covering them. I wear it, but reluctantly. Next time I'll try on a few diferent styles in a physical store and then order my preferred type from Amazon. Can't beat the prices and SuperSaver Shipping! Also, as others have stated: the matte finish scratches with a mere brush against anything that is fairly solid. But I can live with scratches versus shiny.

I am 74 years old. I started riding my one speed bike in July 2011. I did not wear, or think I needed a helmet as I was riding on bike trails, and not on the streets. I have upgraded to a geared bgike and since I was now going to ride the streets as well, my family insisted I wear a helmet. I really liked the look and especially the price of the Protec helmet. Unfortunatly I ordered the wrong size. Buying through Amazon is such a bonus. I was able to return the helmet and receive the correct size in almost no time. The helmet fits great, is so comfortable that I almost forget I have it on.

I wasn't able to actually wear this helmet in a roller derby match or at practice because when I opened the package it was way to small! Even though my head measurement fell under the size small on the sizing chart. I had to use force to get it on, then once I did I had to rip it off like a mad women because it instantly made my head throb. But I can tell that it is a very nice quality. I love the matte charcoal color, and the straps are hard to adjust, which is great because I know that it won't be getting loose on me while I'm in the middle of a game. The option to exchange sizes is not available, so I'm returning it for a medium. The only reason that it got four stars and not five is because it didn't fit properly and I have to get a new one.

I've owned it about 3 weeks and have really liked it. I used their sizing chart and it's worked out fine though a tiny bit tight at first, but I'd prefer that to being on the loose side. It's comfortable and after a short strap adjustment I haven't had to change a thing.

Protec CPSC Classic Helmet, Matte Gray, Size Large
I liked the styling of the Protec helmets after I started seeing US Special Operations Forces use variants of them. I know many teenagers do not like wearing helmets for bicycling, skateboarding, or inline skating mainly because the helmets looked goofy, but the Protec styling really appealed to me. Had I known more about them when I was a teenager, I would have worn one each time I got on my bike.
The build quality is only acceptable. The "generous fit pads" rely on adhesive Velcro patches to adhere to the EPS foam, which is about the thickness of some index cards. I was used to my Snell M2010 motorcycle full-faced racing helmet with its extremely thick EPS foam, and when I got my Protec it was about ¼ the size! Anyhow, the EPS foam is fine and is a black/dark gray color. It's the fit pads that are barely holding onto the EPS foam that concerns me. Some of the pads were not aligned with the holes, and I tried to align them only to find the entire Velcro patches coming off.
The chin strap is very narrow, and I would have liked a black or darker color to go with the matte gray instead of bright yellow. The fastex connector is easy to use, but the adjustment is very stiff.
The helmet is very light weight and does not get in the way. I can wear my Oakley M Frames without any interference from the straps or helmet, so the comfort level is VERY high. The only thing I really have to complain about is the sizing. I normally wear a MEDIUM motorcycle helmet, and my head circumference matches the Protec chart for a LARGE. The Large fits fine, but I can sort of rotate the Protec towards the back of my head. Unfortunately, I don't think their Medium will fit better because it would be too small. The sizing doesn't make a lot of sense for adults.
Overall: 4/5 stars, needs better sizing and more generous fit pads, and more adhesive Velcro patches to remain affixed to the EPS foam. High speed low drag styling!

I have a big head and some smaller helmets don't fit well on me, but this one works great and feels solidly constructed with lots of padding. The GoPro helmet cam works great with this helmet. I got the green color which comes with a beautiful matte finish that I really like, but my girlfriend finds this green "hat" very embarrassing (we are Chinese).

The quality of this helmet is very high for the cost. Not only does the helmet fit my head comfortably and snugly, it looks sleek as well. My only complaint is that I ordered a large (because the reviews suggested ordering up a size) and though that fits my head width, it does not provide ample coverage from the base of my skull to my forehead. As a result, in order to feel I have enough coverage in front, I tilt the helmet forward; but the base of my head is less protected. They should be a little more generous with the lateral measurements.

Great helmet but runs small, at least for my head. Head measured 57.5cm so I ordered a large per Pro-tec's sizing chart and it ran small. I exchanged it for a XL and it fits great! Ventilation is better than expected as I just rode 15 miles in DC's "heat wave" and almost forgot I had it on.

Awesome helmet, great fit; I can't handle the teardrop style of helmet, I can't see how they'll help in a crash. I've had two crashes, both times wearing a roller hockey style helmet and the scratches and bangs tell me a "modern" or streamlined style helmet would have done me No Good At All. They didn't have a reasonable selection of this style for me locally {okay, I'm REALLY color picky} so I shopped Amazon and settled on the Pro-Tec. My other interest was Nutcase helmets, but I wasn't confident about how low they drop down in the back - I'll have to check them out in person but they're not carried in-store locally - I'm not going to buy a helmet at their price without being able to check important features - so back to Pro-Tec!
Measure your head, consult the size chart, and you're good to go, they really do fit like a dream and you can use paste-in helmet fitting aids from other companies if you have a particularly difficult fit {narrow or oblong} and need to make it more secure in one direction or another.
I find the venting very adequate; After a strenuous ride I was heating up and my body was sweating but I could feel the breeze on the top of my head - that reminded me to zip down my windbreaker - it was a cool day so it didn't occur to me to release layers until then.

i oredered a small after checking the size on my sons last pro tec helmet. they sent me what is labeled as small but clearly is smaller than the other. my son is getting a razon scooter, a new deck, and a new bike for xmass and now will not have a helmet to wear as his other was signed by tony hawk, christian hosoi and mike mcgill and is in a glass case. now i have to either buy another helmet real quick or let me son suffer till i can get this corrected. very disappointed

I really wish they had a bigger size than the Xl. For some reason it does not fit even with the biggest size. Well it does fit, but it gave me a headache at first. Now it doesn't and the foams have molded to the shape of my head. But i used it for headspinning and i thought this was the best headspinning helmet i had.

I was born in the 1st half of the last century, so wearing a helmet to ride a bike seems weird... but... this one is comfortable and not goofy looking like some. If you're going fast enough to benefit from aerodynamic streamlining, you're going WAY too fast!

I ordered this helmet, thinking it was made of the plastic shell, the styrene inner shell and the soft foam pads, like you see in the photo- but it's just the plastic shell with the soft foam pads glued right to it, no styrene part at all. It doesn't feel like it offers any protection. I don't wear it.

Great product and fit perfectly using the provided sizing guide. Kids head measurement was exactly between a small and a medium. Went with small and it was perfect. You really don't want this helmet to be too big otherwise it will ride backwards on the head and protect the forehead. No extra pads were provided either so no way to make it fit if too big. Green color was pretty much as exacted.

Seriously though, its kinda scary that a 17yr old who cant even pay a phone bill on time is given responsibility of a 2 ton killing machine), I finally guilted my family into buying this for me so they would stop worrying if I was dead or not. It's a 100% upgrade from the previous model and I will be proud to don this on my dome as I barrel through intersections screaming 'beep beep beep'. Just try and hit me with a Snapple bottle now, guy at Houston and Lafayette who would have seen me if he wasn't too busy texting.
