5.0 out of 5 stars.  All worth it all-road cycling shoe, August 26, 2011
By TL_Prime
Bought these shoes because I was looking at dual-sided pedals for my road bike (Cannondale CAAD8). I live in a busy urban area where clipping in is not always an option or the wisest idea in stop-and-go / constantly fear-for-your-life defensive circumstances. I already have a set of Shimano Ultegra racing pedals and SPD-SL cleats, but these weren't very practical for every day use.

These shoes absolutely met my expectations!

My criteria:
- Comfortable: check. Not quite as light or firm as carbon shoes, but please - for $71.33 (my purchase price through Amazon, $30 cheaper than any big box retailer had them), try and find a better value for all-purpose biking.
- Good fit: check. As mentioned by previous reviewers, these run small for some reason. You definitely want room for your feet to swell during a ride, so do not buy your 'correct' size based on these sizing charts. I normally wear an EU 44 dress shoe / US 10 - 10.5 athletic shoe depending on the brand. I went with an EU 45 for these shoes and they fit like a dream with no heel lift during rides when velcro is down correctly.
- Recessed cleats and treads for walking: check. These are great for walking around after hopping off my bike without the annoying click/clack and slip/slide with my racing shoes/cleats. I hope to never have to hike my bike in these, but they would be more than up to the task.
- Easy to clip in, clip out: check. I went with the SPD SH-56 multi-directional cleats on these shoes and everything works as expected. The cleats seemed to come loose after the first few rides, but a few additional tightenings and they seemed fine.
- durable: check.

Compatible with SPD SH-56 (multi-directional) and SH-51 (uni-directional) cleats.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Sizing. They run small., July 5, 2011
By Brett
These are great shoes. I use the for spin class so I may not be their best critic but I will say that they do run small and correlating the size from US to European makes matters more confusing. One reviewer suggests that you take your US size and go 1/2 size larger then convert to EU. I did this and they still feel a little tight - not unbearable but not the most comfortable either. If I were doing this again I would go a full size larger and then convert to EU and select that - either that or go somewhere locally to determine my European size before ordering online. Hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good-To-Go Cycle, March 6, 2011
By Q-TIBBS
This is my 1st pair of cycling shoes. I've been indoor cyclyng for about 9 mos. w/ tennis shoes. These really made a difference in my form and feel. They fit well, and no more foot discomfort. Not great for walking, but great for spinning.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Shoes work as expected, April 26, 2011
By S. Hyde (Floyds Knobs, IN)
This is the first pair of cycling shoes I have owned. They work very well and definitely improve my performance on the bike. However, they do not keep your feet warm on cold morning rides. Also, make sure the screws are very tight on the cleats. If they come loose, it is extremely difficult to become unattached from the pedal - check the tightness of the screws frequently.

And the size may run a slight bit below stated size. Not being used to the EU sizing, I ordered what it stated and they are a tad small. They fit okay - but not enough room to double up on socks for the cold morning rides.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Economy Shoe, July 13, 2011
By Bing09
I bought these cleats to use with my trek road bike and they are awesome. These are my first pair of clipless shoes so take this with a grain of salt since I do not have any other shoes to compare it to. This shoe has a very stiff sole making it much more efficient to transfer power from me to the bike!!! I use this with the Shimano SPD cleats and they work great as well. Overall very satisified with this economy shoe.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Durable, Comfortable, Strong Performance, May 26, 2011
By Dan (Lancaster, PA)
I'll only be using these on the mountain, although they're stiff enough for the road. So far, I'm extremely pleased, especially for only paying around $70!! The only downfall is not having the spikes in the front for hiking your bike up those super steeps. Well worth the sacrafice.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good looking but undersized using their chart, July 7, 2011
By M. Baca
I bought two pair for me and my wife and when I pulled mine out of the box I thought it was my wifes pair (as in they were that small). The toe of this shoe is narrow, so people with normal to wide feet, ummm prepare to be dissappointed or read my review and buy at least 2 sizes up. I bought a 10 1/2 and the shoes were barely tolerable without any socks. A long ride and I would have been cutting my pinky toe off. My wife bought a 9 1/2, and tried my 10 1/2 on and said it was more her size. My feet fit shoes like Saucony and Aisics really good to give you and idea of my foot shape. I'm guessing these shoes would fit someone who wears Nike (narrow).

I didn't noticed that this is a 2 bolt cleat system so I had to return them since my clips/cleats are three bolt. So we didn't have a chance to ride in them.

The "women's model" in hot pink and black was an instant wow with my wife who was really bummed when I had to return them.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Change your bike forever, July 26, 2011
By MDDMD
Just received these in the mail today and man am i impressed! I have been cycling with cages up until now (these are my first clipless) and i never knew what I was missing. These shoes fit great especially if you have a wide foot like me. I am a 10.5 (US) very wide and ordered the size 46 and they couldn't fit more perfect. There is a small draft in the toe but it feels amazing on a hot summer's day. If you want to stop the draft i would suggest some toe covers.

If you are on the fence about getting a clipless system for your bike there's no reason to be. Getting these shoes along with a pair of clipless pedals has changed my whole perception of cycling. My pedals pump out so much more power due to the rigid shoe design and the power gained from the upstroke makes hill climbing a breeze. I went out cycling in a very hilly area for a half hour and wasn't even close to being as tired as i normally would be. You owe it to yourself to get a clipless system and these shoes are perfect whether your on the road or on the trail and for so cheap!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  the shoe fits, July 3, 2011
By lsc
I took the suggestion of an REI bike rep and bought a half size larger. Not only did I save $30 but it was a good fit. Very little break-in required with bike shoes for obvious reasons of needing a stiff platform. I have seen other sheos less expensive but after a 125 mile bike ride and no blisters or hot spots I cannot complain.

I wear size 10 shoes and ordered up a half size per all the reviews I read. They'd be a little tight if I wouldn't have. I love these shoes. Easy to wipe off and keep clean, no clickity click because of the soles, easy on/off. great first riding shoe for me!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  *WAY* too small., January 24, 2012
By Ryan and Dacia Ray
I just received them and even though I ordered a EU size too big the shoes we still too small. I wear a 12 in normal shoes and had to order a 47! This is a pretty bad manufacturing problem.

The build quality is great though and I will be ordering another pair.

Watch out for non Amazon sellers as they will likely make you pay to return or exchange. I usually make sure items are actually from Amazon or Zappos.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good shoe for the money, January 7, 2012
By Kayaker
This is my first pair of bike shoes so I don't have much to compare them to except for sneakers. The difference between riding with these shoes vs sneakers is dramatic. Not only is the pedaling much more efficient, but my feet are much more comfortable as well and my toes are no longer going numb after a 20 mile ride. Honestly, I bought these because the reviews were mostly good and the price was right. I was pleasantly surprised that the free shipping was FedEx and they arrived in just a few days.

My biggest concern was sizing and I'm very glad that I read these reviews first and got a heads up. You must order larger than your regular size because these run small. I wear an 11 dress shoe and a 12 running shoe. For these,I started with the 12 and went up from there figuring that too big was better than too small. I ordered a 46.5 which corresponds to anywhere from a 12 to a 12.5 depending on what conversion chart you use. I kind of felt like I was taking a shot in the dark, but they seem to fit very well so I lucked out there.

The recessed cleat is great because you can comfortably walk around in them without looking and sounding like a duck wearing tap shoes. A lot of my friends really can hardly walk at all in their bike shoes dragging their clunky cleats with every step. Still, I wouldn't want to walk a few miles in these.

Only time will tell how long they last, but for now I'm a happy camper.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Mis-leading title, December 28, 2011
By GubbaBump73
Good shoes, I know because I have some before I ordered these. I thought I was ordering the equivalent of the same mountain bike shoe I had but in a road shoe. As the title says, road shoe. However these are still mountain bike shoes.

My road cleats will not attach to these. I had to go buy real road shoes to make the ride I had planned and to be able to use the pedals I ordered.

So good shoe, good price, bad title!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Horrible Return Experience - Beware of HDO Sport!, December 20, 2011
By indooroutdoor cycler
*Please note this review is only for shoes sold by HDO Sport* So I got a pair of 45s which would usually be just slightly large for me but they ended up being way too small. The first thing I noticed was that the price had gone up to $75 from the $61.77 I'd paid just a week earlier. So I called HDO Sport who told me they'd exchange the shoes for a half size up but I'd have to pay the return shipping. I paid $11 to ship them back and was browsing my local bike shop a few days later. I found some great Shimano road shoes that were much stiffer and would work better for my purposes (indoor cycling). I called HDO to let them know I was instead going to return, not exchange the shoes. The guy said fine and the shoes arrived yesterday. They gave me a refund LESS the cost of the original $4.50 free shipping on top of the fact I'd already paid the return shipping costs, and when I called to ask them why the guy simply said, "It's in our seller profile." I let him know I'm sure it is but that doesn't change the fact that so many of their competitors offer free initial and return shipping and I'd just come $16 out of pocket for a pair of shoes that I didn't even keep. He acknowledged my complaint but didn't offer me any type of reparation. With nothing left to say we ended the call but not before I let him know I'd never shop with HDO again. As an avid road and indoor cyclist that's a real shame, as HDO's competitors (Performance, Bike.com, Amazon, Zappos) have seen a lot of business from me.
All of this said I wonder if I should've contacted Pearl Izumi first who guarantees their fit for the first 60 days. Bet they would've taken better care of me.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Value for the Price, December 19, 2011
By MG in NY (New York, NY USA)
These are very solid shoes for commuting, spin class or recreational off-road cycling. They're not competitive grade and use velcro closures rather than the ratcheting buckle used on more expensive shoes. Nor are they as form fitting nor stiff soled as the higher end models. However, those features are typically found on shoes 3-4X the price of these - and these shoes are certainly as good as ones twice the price. All in all an excellent, if somewhat basic, shoe.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Value, November 21, 2011
By TommyD
Other than the European sizing (I went up a tad to be sure, based on other reviews), I love these shoes. I ride a couple of times per week. I take my mountain bike on the street for cardio (8 to 12 miles) or go trail riding with my riding mates (4 to 6 miles). These are my first clipless peddles and shoes and I am very happy with their performance. Additionally, my friends, who have been avid riders for years, have commented on their quality (good firm sole and easy to attach plates). I heartily recommend these, especially if you are looking for a reasonably priced first time shoe.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid all-purpose riding shoe, October 18, 2011
By Marc
I normally wear a US 9 1/2 - 10 and settled on mens euro 43 based on previous reviews. This turned out being a *very* snug fit. So they definitely lean toward small sizing. I almost returned them but decided [fingers and toes crossed] to try and break them in. Took about two weeks of steady use but now they are perfect. The best part was no blisters or discomfort even during the break in period.

The shoe is well made if a tad stiff. Easy to walk around off-bike while taking the inevitable cafe break. The cleats recess completely so there's no loud clicking or slip. The velcro straps can be a little frustrating getting my foot quickly into pedal cages on one bike but not a deal breaker since I mostly use the spd system.

Highly recommend as a solid reasonably priced all-purpose riding shoe.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  As others say, order large, October 5, 2011
By J. Park
Usually wear 10 or 10.5. I went with a full size up from 10.5 and ordered size 45 and shoes fit perfectly. Nice and light compared to my previous pair from years ago (though there are much lighter I am sure, for much more money too). Comfortable, and a great value.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Seems like a good shoe - but runs really small, September 27, 2011
By A. Upson
Just got these shoes today. Tried them on and even though I'd ordered a full size larger than the chart thanks to the other reviews' suggestions they were still just barely too small. They scrunched my toes just a little too much. Sending them back in the morning, and have ordered another half size larger.

My feet are pretty narrow (I can easily wear C widths, B in some brands), and these shoes didn't leave much room to spare in terms of width. So if you have wide feet (D or wider)you may want to make sure you can try these on before buying.

Haven't ridden in them yet, but they seem decent enough if they would have fit right. Other than the toe scrunching they were pretty good at conforming to my foot. Walked around the house in them just long enough to decide they were too small, but, while obviously not like a sneaker, it was certainly tolerable. I wouldn't want to have to walk several miles in them, but that's not what they're designed for. The stiffness of the sole was very noticable. Never had bike shoes before though so I really can't compare them to others in terms of stiffness. But it felt like everyone I know has said bike shoes are supposed to feel.

Only complaint is that the tounge is really thin and does feel especially durable. It might be just fine, but it doesn't inspire confidance. But for a $70 pair of shoes you can't expect total perfection.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good value, comfortable for short walks, September 21, 2011
By Vasiliy
I am size 9.5-10 US, and my foot is fairly wide (I prefer skating shoes). This shoe in size 45 M EU fit me well -- but I think 44.5 would provide a more snug fit with thin socks.

The inside of the shoe is padded well like a sneaker, there are no hard surfaces touching or rubbing my foot, and it is very comfortable. I commute to work, and have worn them the entire day (because of laziness) without any problems.

The cleat in the shoe is recessed, which allows you to walk in these shoes on most kinds of terrain. When walking on asphalt, you may still hear the cleat dig into the ground a bit, which is normal and doesn't interfere with walking.

I liked the design of the shoe because it is not flashy, yet you can tell that it is a bike shoe.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pearl Izumi Men's All-Road Cycling shoe, September 11, 2011
By txcyclist1
This was my first mountain biking shoe purchase, so I had been doing a lot of reaearch at my LBS and on-line. I was already impressed with the brand having purchased several items from Pearl Izumi before. This shoe works great for me, is comfortable and works well off of the bike if you have to walk around. The reviews I read said the size runs small, so I did order one size larger. I would probably say that a half size larger would be more correct in terms of sizing, but it still fits fine with socks. The clipless pedal cleat attachment works well and the cleats have not loosened with use. The velcro closures work great and hold your foot snug. Most shoes I looked at in this price range had only two straps. Three are much better imo. It seems very well constructed so far. I am not a hard core mtn biker, but I beleive they should last for a long time.

Bought these with new shimano pedals. I want to thank the other reviewers who recommended buying a half size larger that your natural size. I did and the fit is very good. So let me echo their statements, the shoes run small so go up a half size. You should be all set.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works for me., August 27, 2011
By kenamerica
I primarily wear these when I'm on the road. These are my first cycling shoes, so I don't have a lot to compare them to. I got mountain bike shoes because I wanted to try some cyclo-cross later in the season. I believe the shoes will work well for cyclo-cross. They are very easy to walk around in. I haven't had any trouble so far, and I've ridden in them all summer. I normally wear 9.5 American, but I wish I'd gotten a size 10. They're just a tad snug. One other thing-they're not a lite-weight shoe.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great shoe!, August 9, 2011
By theesimon
I put about 200 miles on these shoes in the last two weeks, and all I can say is they are awesome! They are nice and stiff, and have a good amount of grip when not clipped. Shoes also got soaked on a ride and the leather did not stretch which is a big plus. I also took the advice from other reviews and ordered a size larger and they fit perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent, February 14, 2012
By D. Gay (Greenwood, IN)
I have 9.5 size shoe and ordered the 43.5 and the fit was perfect. They are a pinch tight but I'm expecting them to stretch; as well, I can adjust the tightness with the velcro. I don't really have a wide foot.

I plan use these on a road bike. I do stop occasionally to poke around, or when I'm riding with the kids, and so the depressed clip is nice. The sole is stiff as to be expected and provides great support.

Rode 26 miles with these to break them in and they felt perfect right out of the box. Even though they were just a bit tight, it didn't bother my feet at all.

Very happy with these. Would by Pearl Izumi again.

The DON't come with clips so you'll need to make sure you order those separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  New pair of shoes, February 29, 2012
By Johnny Truant
My wife ordered the women's version of these shoes for her clipless pedal system and loved them, so I thought I'd give these a try.

FIT: Having read other reviewers' reccomendations, I selected a size larger than what the size chart suggested. I normally wear a 9.5 with some wiggle room left over, so I opted for the Euro-size 44 (equivalent to a 10 in the US) and the shoes fit snugly - but not too tight - with normal athletic socks. If you prefer a looser fit, or more room to breathe, you might want to consider moving up 1.5 or 2 sizes instead.

FUNCTION: Installation of cleats (not included) was quick and painless, and the sole is stiff enough to allow for power transfer while still comfortable enough to walk around in.

PRICE: I'm always wary about mentioning price in reviews as they tend to fluctuate over time, but it's exactly that fluctuation that I wanted to mention. If you're in dire need of good shoes right now, go ahead and order. I had mine sitting on a Wish List for a week or so and was sent a notification that the price had dropped by nearly thirty dollars. Naturally, I sprung. Not sure if this was just due to overstock (other sizes remained previously priced) or what, but it might be worth waiting a little bit to see what happens if you can afford to wait.

In short: great shoes, great value, great performance. Watch out for that size difference, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wonderful all-purpose cycling shoe., March 21, 2012
By T.Knight
I use these with my Crank Brothers Candy 2 pedals. They're absolutely wonderful and fit great provided you have the right size (I did have to make an exchange after ordering too big when trying to heed people's warnings - I went too far over).

So, bearing you have the correct size, they tighten easily with the velco straps. I wouldn't want to take a long walk in them, but they're serviceable for getting around when you're off the bike. I've been using them for about a year now, and I'm hard pressed to find a fault in them.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, March 16, 2012

I am new to bike shoes but thought I'd give them a try. I ordered the pedals and shoes at same time and just tried out today. They made quite a difference in my pedaling efforts and are comfortable. I wear size 9 1/2 US and I ordered size 43.5. They fit well. easy to walk in too.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice shoe, April 25, 2012
By Gordo
like everyone says they run small, im a 12.5-13, i ended up getting the 47, but they were too small, went right to the front, returned and found a 48s on sale! thanks amazon!, anyway they fit nice but they are a little narrow, so if your like me and have a wide foot and a high instep you might have to keep them a little lose, they are a little stiff, might take a few rides to break them in, try wearing them around as normal shoes for a few days to get use to them, they are nice to walk in not the best. the cleat adjustments are good, lots of options to fine tune your fit.. the one thing i will say is the recessed cleat is a double edged sword, its nice not to click clack everywhere, but if your like me and this is your first clipless shoe/pedal set up you may find it difficult to clip in the first few times you ride

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very comfortable and sleek looking, April 21, 2012
By Steven Santos (YONKERS, NY, US)
I enjoy the look. They are very sporty and light weight. I believe the spd cleats are heavier than the shoe itself. They slip on easily and come off just as easily but hold strong while the straps are in place.

The only draw back in my opinion is that it doesn't allow for much air circulation as I would have liked, but these are my first pair of road cycling shoes and maybe they are just built in that fashion. I guess that lack of air circulation will help on colder days of cycling.

Pearl Izumi makes quality products. Have been using the Elite Barrier cycling jacket in all black for over a year and its just great for brisk mornings and even colder fall days.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great shoes - run a little small, April 16, 2012
By jmf425
This is a great shoe and very comfortable. I bought these for use with my Shimano A-530 dual platform pedals. I normally wear a size EU 42 but decided to go with size EU 43. Glad I did! I went for a long ride after the shoes came in and found that the size I chose was perfect. The power transfer to the pedals was superb. No sore spots or rubbing or pressure points. It's all good.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pearl iZUMi Men's All-Road Cycling Shoe, April 16, 2012
By Bill B (COLFAX, CA, US)
This is my first transition to clipless shoes. I bought them for my hybrid bike. Screw loosened up after about 10 miles of riding, and foot got stuck. I used loctite and check them before each ride, work great. I just got a new road bike and the shoes doing great with them also.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good shoe, May 3, 2012
By Eriocaulon (United States)
I am a recreational biker and wanted a bike shoe with stiff sole that is hard to find in a running shoe. This shoe was affordable and good quality. For how often I bike, it should last a while. I usually where size 11.5 for running shoe and chose 46.5EU for this shoe--turned out perfect!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good choice, May 17, 2012
By pete
First time with cleated shoes. Easy to learn to use. Shoes do NOT come with cleats. Toe box more narrow than expected; will go up from size 45 to 46 next time. Happy with Pearl Izumi; happy with delivery. Would buy PI again, but maybe different model (just because). Would buy from same vendor again.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  It does run a bit small!, May 16, 2012
By shan544 (Burbank, CA)
I have been putting off purchasing cycling shoes for some time now, but I finally decided to pick these up because they went on sale! I read as many reviews as I could to determine what size I needed due to the fact that these shoes ran between 1/2 size small to a full size. I wear a Nike 9.5 and went with the majority of people who said to go up at least 1/2 size so I went ahead and ordered the size 44EU. I guess I got lucky because the shoe fits perfectly, with plenty of room in the toe box. I used them in my spin class the day I got them and I didn't have any issues with blisters or chafing -- literally no break in period necessary! The SPD cleats were very easy to install and you may have to remove the inner sole lining because the back plate is taped in place.

As others have said, this is NOT a road cycling shoe but more of a mountain bike; all purpose shoe. Substantially it has more weight than a road shoe and the sole is probably not as stiff either. The trade off is there is tread on the sole and the SPD cleat is recessed inside which allows the user to walk around normally without having to take off your shoes or making clanking sounds. My initial impressions of these shoes are really good. Fit, construction and materials all seem very good, especially for the $62 price tag. Can't really beat that!

I will update in a few months after I have a few tri's under my belt with them.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  first pair - good fit, May 12, 2012
By Andy
Having never purchased a pair of cycling shoes, nor having gone to a cycling retail store to try any on i was fairly appprehensive about purchasing online...felt like i was buying blind but i was in a hurry to get started riding to rehab (i tore my ACL and was told biking can really help)
got the GMC Denali Road Bike and the Shimano PD-M324 clip/clipless pedals and these shoes and have been VERY happy with all of them so far. I've gone on several 20 mile rides in the last 2 weeks and all have worked beautifully.
i typically wear a size 9.5 shoe, i have very wide and flat feet and the size 43.5 fit perfectly...snug enough to not slip but not constrictingly tight to cut off circulation after an hour or more on the bike.
for the price, i think it's a good, but clearly not GREAT product as i can't imagine them lasting all too long. velcro as opposed to more expensive clip models, and the overal quality of the shoe isn't staggering, but again, for the price i'm happy
