Not XTR, but good for the price, November 17, 2009

I purchased this crankset as part of a road conversion of a 1990 Trek 8000 mountain bike. I have 3 other newer and better mountain bikes, and this one was just collecting dust with old worn-out components, so I decided to convert it for shorter-distance road riding with skinny 26" road tires. The old crankset was bent and it was easier to buy a new one with new bottom bracket than to try to straighten out the old one.
This crankset did the trick, and it was reasonably priced. With a new BB and front derailleur, the old fully rigid workhorse was back in use, albeit for a different purpose.
I have had some issues with the left crank bolt working loose a few times, but I removed the crank arm and put a very thin amount of grease on the bolt and BB taper before reinstalling with proper torque and haven't had any problems since.
I'm giving it 4 stars because if it was used off-road (as intended), it wouldn't work nearly as well as the newer BB systems (ISIS, Hollowtech, etc). I can't complain about the price, though.

Gotta love it at this price, February 16, 2011

Bought to replace 15yr old cranks on my MTB that had begun to shift shabbily. This crank restored shifting to like new (as best as I can remember it). Almost bought a set for my touring bike, but it put gearing a tad low.
Chainrings are riveted together so you can't replace them individually.
Great to have this option of an inexpensive triple to resuscitate an old bike.

Nice beefy looking cranks, September 1, 2011

Purchased these to put on an 86" Rockhopper I was building. I had the cheaper Shimano model on. These made a huge difference in pedal effort and how smooth they operate. Good value. The crankarms look beefy, clean, and sleek. Casting looks cleaner than lower end model.Installed without a hitch. Needed a big Allen nut for the arm bolts. Made my bike look much cooler. Now where is that chain lock..

Big improvement, not much $$, May 20, 2012

At first I just wanted new chain rings (old ones worn and rusted), but couldn't find them to fit the old cranks. But these cost about the same with nice cranks! Works fine, just make sure the clearance matches so your shifting will work the same (lots of specs at the Shimano website).
