 Nice, high quality chain at a great price, August 11, 2011

My Trek Madone came with an Ultrega setup but it was time to replace the chain and cassette based on wear and tear. Turns out Trek saved a little money by putting 105 class chains and cassettes on their bikes. When I swapped them out I went with this Ultegra chain and the Ultegra cassette (both from here on Amazon). The cost was actually nearly identical to the 105 class chain and cassette, yet they are a little lighter.
I've now put about 1,000 miles on this chain and it's performed flawlessly. Don't forget - swap out your chain because it's stretched, you also need to change your cassette.

I installed the new chain along with a whole new Ultegra 6700 drive train including derailleurs. The shifting performance has been fine. I am shifting with Dura Ace 7900 bar end shifters and the bike has not missed a shift. I am happy with the purchase. My rainy weather commuter bike has a 30 year old Suntour 5 speed drive train with a Walmart chain. It shifts nice too. When I switch back and forth between the bikes, I sometime keep an informal count of perfectly smooth and silent shifts. The Ultegra drive train makes plenty of perfect shifts. What surprises me is that the old Suntour drive train that has about 20,000 miles on it except for the new $8.00 Walmart chain also makes nearly as many great shifts. Of course the one shifting advantage for the Suntour is that it is only shifting 10 teeth between the chainrings instead of the 16 tooth difference on the Ultegra compact crankset and there is plenty of space between the cogs on the 5 speed cassette. I will get another 6701 chain when I need it. A cheaper one might work ok too, but I know that I don't even have to think about shifts with this chain.

ultegra grade... but is it any better?, January 18, 2012

Just put this thing on my bike and I must say, it does look good.... It went on with no problems (if you have access to the right tools for the job) and only needed to have 5 or so links trimmed to fit nicely on my CX bike with no excess slack throughout the gear range. This chain is supposedly direction specific and is designed to shift easier than a standard chain... I have yet to see if this is true but my bike does need a tune-up so I need to sit down with it on an afternoon and get it nice and dialed in, then the added machining benefits may be more pronounced. The pin was alittle on the difficult side to put in but again, it comes down to having the right tools for the job (my chain breaker is currently out of commission)
Overall it is a nice chain, but is the new 6700 chain worth the cost over an older style cheaper alternative? only time will tell.

I started riding year round about 4 years ago. I now ride over 4000 miles a year. It is recommended that you change your chain every 3000 miles to keep from damaging your chain rings when the chain stretches out due to wear. It also keeps the chain from slipping when shifting. After replacing two front chain rings I now replace my chain as recommended. This chain seems to shift better than the 6600 I upgraded from.

Ultegra is durable and smooth. The quality of this line is great! I decided to go 100% Ultegra on my cheap alloy road bike. When people look at my frame and the components they look at me like I am crazy or stupid. What they don't know is how cheap I got all of my Ultegras just by shopping around and being patient. When I get the $$ I'll buy a carbon fiber frame and slap on all of my Ultegras for a wicked setup.
