Switching gears, April 29, 2009

I could not find a road cassette to meet my needs so I bought this MTB cassette for it's 11-28 gearing. My bike came with a 12-26 which is nice but I live in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains so it is half uphill no matter what unless you are beside a river or stream. The SRAM is lighter than my stock piece and is plated to prolong life. Awesome buy at a great price. (under 20)

Works great with Shimano systems, December 31, 2010

This cassette is inexpensive, yet works wonderfully over lots of miles. I have 4,000 miles on one cassette, and bought another for my other road bike, which I have 1000 miles on. Shifts very smoothly, no complaints at all.

Works great, September 21, 2009

Works great, the only thing I recommend is to make sure you have the correct tool to remove the nut that locks this on, I didn't and had to wait another week, after taking apart my bike, to order the tool from Amazon.

Good!, September 6, 2010

Simano has only 1 gear ratio 8speed casset.
Comapred with Shimano, SRAM has 5 gear ratio.
I have changed the casset from 12-26 to 11-28T for my weak legs.
There is no need to change the CHAIN.
Thank you SRAM!

Nice, smooth shifts. Weak rivets., July 28, 2011

I purchased this cassette to replace a worn on on a used bike (2007 Specialized Rockhopper) I bought. No matter how much I adjusted the rear derailleur, I just couldn't get the chain to change gears quickly and smoothly. I suspected that the old cassette's teeth were worn, and it seems as if I was right...This cassette did the trick. Perfect, fast, smooth shifting. It's certainly not a light-weight, but for under $20, it definitely can't be beat.
If you've never changed a cassette before, and you're attempting this yourself, you'll have to have 2 tools in order to remove your old one - a Chain Whip, and a Cassette Lockring tool. Without these, it'll be very difficult (nearly impossible) to remove your old cassette. If you don't have a chain whip, do like I did, and make one using an old bike chain, and a piece of thin metal to be used as a handle.
Update (09/13/2011):
I removed the cassette because my rear hub was failing. Upon removal, I found the rivets holding the cogs together had failed. This isn't a big problem for me, it just slows down the process of swapping cassettes, or replacing them after cleaning. On a positive note, it makes it all that much easier to thoroughly clean each cog & spacer, making the cassette look like brand new every time.

go to reliability, August 9, 2011

I don't even think of trying out some other brand. Excellent value too. Never a broken cog or tooth and I get about 7k dusty miles out of it. Tried a few "non brand name" cassettes and they cracked right away.

Excellent cassette value -precise shifting, April 24, 2012

This is my go-to cassette. For the price this can't be beat. With a Tiagra or greater derailleur this cassette is flawless when it comes to shifting.
I bought two just to have one as a back-up the value was so great. In another few thousand miles I might just buy another but they last so long I might not have to.

Utterly ridiculous value., October 18, 2011
By JP (Amherst, MA USA)

Yes, it could be lighter, but for around twenty bucks the value of this cassette is absurd. I stripped an older road bike and have rebuilt it with an 8-speed drive train and new wheels with Shimano/SRAM hub and this has worked magnificently well. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a new 8-speed cassette.

Custom cassette, October 30, 2011
By Ray

I have a Trek 7500 with an 8-speed rear cassette. The original cassette was built with 2-tooth jumps from cog to cog in the mid-range. I wanted to create a custom cassette with single-tooth jumps from cog to cog. I purchased both the 11-30 and 11-28 gearing options of the PG850 and combined them into a custom cassette with the desired single-tooth jumps. Works perfectly. The result is finer tuning of gearing. The loss of the largest cogs was a no-brainer since I never shifted into those cogs anyway. Combined the new custom cassette with a SRAM 870 chain. Great performance and good value.

Awesome, combined 2 for custom cassette, April 16, 2012
By Jeff Drury (Houston)

I see so many people pushing the wrong gear or climbing with the tiniest gears that came on their new bike, then walking the second half of the hill. I'm at 265 lbs right now and combining 2 of these cassettes into a 13,15,17,18,21,24,28,30 put me over the moon on my last ride (also thanks to my triple ring crank). Big hills may take a long time in a 1 to 1 ratio, but I top them on bike. If you're wondering, the difference between 26 and 30 is huge in terms of climbing, if you think you need it - you need it.
My only Qualm is that the second one shipped without the 11 tooth gear, didn't need the 11's but hey if I wasn't combining that would have put me in a pickle. Amazon, your hand has been slapped :)

Good Quality Cassette, April 14, 2012

Replaced my Sunrace 12-25 in my Trek 1.1 with this. I also replaced the chain with sram 850 at the same time. It is definetely a better cassette, lighter and gear changes are smoother. I have a simillar cassette in my trek 7.2 and always notice the difference between the sram cassette and the sunrace. Sram is much smoother.

Good, but not mechanically perfect, April 7, 2012
By Brook Maven (NM USA)

Overall I'm pleased with the cassette with regard to function, build, and price. There appears to be a slight undulating effect in the rotation of the cassette when viewing its profile from, say, above. It doesn't appear to impede energy transfer significantly enough disqualify it for commuter use.
