Excellent addition to your toolset, May 16, 2010

If you work on bikes a lot, it's only a matter of time before you need some torque and regular allen wrenches won't do. In my case it came after riding a bike through the winter on salt-covered roads.
You probably know that you need this if you're looking at buying it, so I'll just say that the construction is solid. Even the piece of plastic mounting the pieces is well laid-out and durable.

Low Quality Tool, December 8, 2010
By (brainiac) (San Diego, CA)

I have heard great things about Park Tools' quality so I bought this to work on my bicycle. The last thing I want is to get stuck with damaged components from bad tools. I also liked the idea of being able to use a torque wrench with the hex and torx wrenches. Unfortunately, the quality of the hex wrenches is very low. The wrenches have a sloppy fit that seems to be almost a half millimeter off which is the first sign that something will potentially get boogered up. Next, because the sockets use a 3/8 inch socket wrench, you would think that they would be made of high quality metal because they are begging to become over-torqued by newbies, but they are not high quality.
I tried to use the tools to perform maintenance on my pedals but the 9mm socket was too wide (outside diameter) to fit in the tight space and had some slop in the fit, and the 3 mm hex wrench started with a sloppy fit and was able to remove only 3 of 8 bolts before becoming rounded off (yes, I do know what types of force are appropriate/not appropriate with hex wrenches). Luckily, the metal of the tool was softer than the bolts so the bolts did not get damaged.
The solution to my problem was to go to Home Depot to get a set of sockets with the proper diameter to fit my bike. Also, I used my Bondhus hex wrenches to easily remove the remaining bolts. The Bondhus wrenches fit like a glove with no slop and could remove the bolts that caused the Park Tool to fail.
I am returning this product.

No case, May 19, 2010
By W. Gayther

I just received this in the mail. While I haven't used it yet, I wanted to point something out for other people - it does *not* come with a case, which tools socket sets usually do.
The way you see it - with the bits just sitting there open - is the way it is. So if you're thinking you'll throw it in your backpack or something, be aware that all the bits will fall out everywhere.
I'm not saying it's deceptive - it didn't *say* it would come with a case. But I had thought it would, so I wanted to let other people know.
P.S. In my case I was ordering this so I could change seats but set them up like my bike fitter did. At the same time, I needed to buy an electronic level. I purchased a Husky 9" Electronic Level for $40 from Home Depot, Model #THD9403 Store SKU #934631. It came with a fabric case that zippered up for the level - but what do I need a case a level for?? But - the case fits *exactly* around the Park Tool Socket and Bit set, almost like it was designed for it. With it zippered, I can throw it around and it's tight enough that the bits even stay in their place in plastic holder they came in - no rattling, no loose bits when I open it up. Just an fyi in case this might be helpful for someone doing the same thing.

Like all other Park tools that I own, this is a good one. A must with a torque wrench, and a price that's hard to beat.

It's really super-great; I love this kit!!! Use it ALL THE TIME!, March 3, 2012
By Gear Freak (USA)

|
Remember when ALL Park TOOLs were made in the U.S.A.? I do. In fact their NAME used to be, "Park Tools USA", but they've since dropped the "USA" part off their name. Whatever.
I have not had any issues that "W. Darling "(brainiac)" has had with "ill-fitting" sizing. All these tools have great fitting tolerances.
I use the crap out of this kit. Mind you, I do have ALL of these sizes in Craftsman and Snap-On, already, but I wanted a tight little kit with all these pieces in one place, without digging into my "motor-tools". I thought I'd use this until it wore out, but it never has.
Firstly, it has EVERY size I have ever needed for "light duty maintenance" on my bicycles (except for #2 Phillips screwdriver (derailleur travel stops), 2mm Hex (Jagwire Hydro Universal Cable Guide), 2.5mm Hex (ODI Lock-On Grips), and 15mm Pedal Wrench - because there are no wrenches)
The "case" or "tray" that it comes in is great. I've used all sorts of socket retaining (usually magnetic) trays and I actually have grown to love how this is just friction. It's really easy to grab a socket and go to town. It's visually laid out perfectly. There are two empty 3/8" slots, that I use to hold a small extention and a Snap-On F734A mini ratchet. That ratchet has 3/8" female drive holes in the bottom, front and back, and the bottom hole fits into the tray nicely. (I actually FOUND that F734A ratchet on the road, while riding my bike one day, and it was CHEWED up. I went to work and warrantee'd it through the Snap-On truck driver and got a brand spanking new one for FREE! It has since been my number one favorite tool)
I use all Snap-On ratchets and Extensions and socket-drivers with this Park Tool SBS-1 kit. That might be one reason I enjoy using it so much. (Snap-On F747A swivel ratchet, F734A mini-ratchet, F50A 3/8" socket driver, and FX4 extension) I digress.
I'll probably add a #2 Phillips 3/8" socket, just for fun, but let me list other tools you'll need in addition to this kit. You'll need a pedal wrench. I enjoy the Lezyne CNC Pedal Rod Pedal Wrench. I have also added all three of the LeZyne 3-way "Y" wrenches, hex and torx, just because they're fun to use, even though they are redundant (except for 2mm and 2.5mm hex keys, and T10 Torx). That's it!
(Of course the list goes on and on, if you want to get deeper into it, but the "most used" section of my tool-box has only the above mentioned tools.)
I like that it has a 25.4mm / 1" socket included in this kit, for using the Park Tools Freewheel Tool and Bottom Bracket tools.
I like that it has a 10mm hex for removing the freehub body. These "bigger" sizes aren't usually in bicycle tool kits.
The chrome finish is no where near as nice as Snap-On, or even Craftsman, but it's not bad! The sockets have all held up great, and they get used a LOT. The size markings look sloppy as well, but they're readable! (I prefer laser etched, personally)
The best part about this SBS-1 kit is the plastic tray, which is not worth much, but it's so convenient, and if you don't already have these sizes, you could do a lot worse.
Accessorize the Park Tool SBS-1 with some good 3/8" drivers and you're all set!
Oh, and I have NEVER USED the following sizes that come with this kit: 9mm socket, 11mm socket, 12mm socket, 13mm socket, and 14mm socket. Cheaper, or older bikes will probably use the 13mm sometimes... (The cable stop thing on Shimano Nexus/Alfine hubs are 9mm, but I don't have one of those - though you might)
I have also never used the T30 Torx, or the T40 Torx.
Okay, out of the 18 pieces in the SBS-1, I have never used 7 of them. That means 38.8% of the sizes are useless. I leave those unused sizes in the kit, because they look good and I don't like empty holes. Hey, it's 61.2% good, and that's how I came up with my three star rating. Enjoy!

Park tool socket and bit set, June 18, 2011

I bought this set to use with my Park torque wrench.
Having various bits able to be used with a 3/8 drive is very handy. Great quality in my book!
