Love it, September 21, 2003
By Douglas Welzel (Seattle, WA)
|
|
Several times I have looked at White Lightning in stores and never felt like going through the hassle of buying it and prepping my bike. I recently had a change of heart and picked up a bottle. After a thorough degreasing, I applied several coats of White Lightning and let it dry overnight. The next day the results were amazing. My bike was much quieter and shifting was much better. Ever since I've been using White Lightning as my primary chain lubricant.

WAX is FOREVER, April 5, 2007
By part-time inventor (Vermont, USA)
|

It's a great lube if you want your chain to stay dry, BUT it is best applied to a super-clean chain or else you'll only be bonding dirt to your chain permanently. Meaning super hot water and even getting on your hands and knees with a toothbrush wont take this stuff off. It's pretty much permanent!

Chain wax has been around forever and is still the best, July 4, 2010
By Hike & Bike (Seaford, VA United States)
|
|
If you value your bike, don't use oil based lubes on your chain. Chain wax has been around a long time and is an excellent way to keep your chain clean and quiet. White Lightning is my favorite that's still being produced. Oil based lubes will attract dirt (just look at anything with oil on it like your car or lawnmower's engine) wax won't attract dirt like that. The discoloration you'll see is the wax capturing the metal from your chain as it "works" and produces small metal flakes due to metal on metal contact. If you absolutely must put some kind of other lube on your chain, use spray silicone. Silicone's properties won't attract dirt either, but you have to re-apply before each ride. Overall chain wax is the best for ease and protection and White Lightning does a very good job among chain waxes.

Get another lubricant, January 3, 2007
By human being (Earth, USA)

Most enthusiastic cyclists and bike shop clerks I talked to dislike this product. I've used it a number of times myself and I would never use it again (especially after I discovered better products). It turns your chain and drive train into a black mess. Finish Line was better. TriFlow was recommended by a number of cyclists.

Start Clean - Stay Clean, December 5, 2010
By Old Hippie (St. Louis, MO.)
|

The first bottle of this I found actually came from a discount store. Couldn't believe that. Anyway...when I found a much larger bottle on Amazon.com for a better price - I ordered it ASAP. If you own a new bicycle, start with this product & stick with it. If your bicycle has a few miles on it - CLEAN your chain THOROUGHLY before applying. You don't want any old grease, road grime or anything on your chain before using. A clean chain is a MUST.
Once on, you won't believe the outcome. It goes on clean & stays clean. You will not find yourself giving the chain a thorough cleaning again for a long while. I recommend using it every 100 to 150 miles - tops - more often if you think your bike needs it.
I'm a 'fair weather' rider. If you go out in any kind of weather or condition, try White Lightning Wet Ride Extreme Conditions Heavy Bicycle Chain Lube, 8-Ounce Drip Squeeze Bottle. Naturally, if you ride under extreme conditions, a good chain cleaning will need to be more frequent.

Best bike lube, November 15, 2010
By Cyclist John (Pennsylvania, USA)
|
|
I love Clean Ride. No more black, greasy stains when you inevitably bump your chain against something. It may take a while to get your drivetrain thoroughly de-greased (I didn't remove my chain and let it soak in a de-greasing solution, so after the first de-greasing and Clean Ride application, a lot of black grease re-appeared), but it's worth it in the end. Smooth, quiet, and clean shifting.

Good for dry weather ridinf, February 4, 2011
By G. Powell (Seattle, WA USA)
|
|
This stuff is nice but it doesn't protect your chain well in the rainy winter riding we get here in Seattle. I lube almost daily and my chain still rusted. But in the summer it's great, still with a near bi-daily lube. Yes it sticks to the dirt but then they both flake off. I clean the chain once a month then re-lube and that gives me about 1,500 miles on a SRAM 10 speed chain.
Still though it makes it so I can handle the chain and not get totally gunked up.

Great Product, May 7, 2011
By bicycle_commuter

As a bicycle commuter, I value a chain lubricant that helps keep my chain and clothes clean. Clean Ride works very well for that purpose. As expected, it requires time to "dry" between application and riding, as well as more frequent applications than oil based lubricants, but that is a small price to pay for the benefit of being able to cycle in everyday clothes without worry of getting black grease on my leg or pants. On the other hand, cyclists who do not place a premium on chain cleanliness will probably be better served by an oil based lubricant.

Not for me., May 31, 2011
By S. A. Wells
|
|
You basically have to have a chain cleaner and degreaser to get this stuff to work right. I'm not doubting it's effectiveness, I just don't have the money to invest in a chain cleaner or to pay to have it cleaned at a bike shop. Like the title says it isn't for me and I doubt the average rider will have a perfectly clean 100% grease free chain to apply it to. I'll stick with wet lubes.

WORKS OK....... BUT......., May 13, 2011
By K. CARTER (Maryland)
|
|
I started using White Lightning since my new bikes. 2010 TREK 1.5, and 2011 TREK Madone. I fine that it does keep the chain clean most of the time, but still leaves a smaller amount of black.
I use "Finish Line Liquid Degreaser" in my "Finish Line Chain Cleaner" (BOTH WORTH GETTING). Then use the "Clean Ride" to lube. Wipe the excess off.
BUT, I notice I get chain noise. You can hear the chain going thru the sprockets of both front and back making me think the chain is DRY. Just make sure ever 100 or so miles, you relube.
When using other lubes, you get a quieter chain BUT a black messy chain....... a trade off.
Several bike shops also recommend installing a new chain ever season anyway.

Start from scratch, July 25, 2010
By Richard M.
|
|
If you're lucky, you'll be sold a bottle with your new bike so you can start using the product on a super-clean chain. Regular reapplications will keep it clean and lubed indefinitely. The self-cleaning properties of the unique wax base really work. Dissatisfied users probably didn't follow instructions: Shake well; only apply to a clean chain; let dry after applying.

best chain lube ..period, July 5, 2011

this stuff rocks...it cleans your chain and lubes it and protects it..you can't beat that . very very impressed and pricing is best...assuming your bike shop carries it..you won't find cheaper. Make sure you shake well before every use as wax sinks very quickly to bottom.

Great lube, July 5, 2011
By Dave (Norfolk, VA USA)
|
|
I want to start by addressing some of the reviews I've read. Yes, putting lube (any lube) on a dirty chain is going to create black, sludgy nastiness that will get on everything. Same goes for this lube. However, that does NOT mean it's the lube's fault. Instead, it's all the muck on your chain mixing with it. Use this lube properly by cleaning the chain thoroughly before applying and it will keep dirt off and keep your chain running smooth for much longer than a cheap wet lube. If you're unwilling to spend the time and money required to properly maintain your bicycle, you can't expect to get good results from this lube or from your bicycle in general. Bottom line, this lube does a great job and is by far the best I've used on a chain.

Need Lube Before the Ride, October 7, 2010
By Franklin (LA, California)
|
|
Make sure to degrease your chain before applying the lube. The wax lube will also keep the dirt away. There's not much to say about the lube other than it works and it helps my bike perform the way it should. White lightning products come highly recommended by a few riders that I hang with. I also purchased the degreaser and the cleaner. Everything works great!

32 OZ Jug is a lot of lube, July 1, 2011
By Nick (San Francisco)
|
|
I've purchased all sizes of White Lightning Clean Ride Lube, the latest being the 32 ounce Jug. It is what it says, a Jug. There is no dropper or squeeze out feature of the jug so you may want to have a dropper or squeeze bottle handy as the 8oz and 4 oz sizes do not come with a removable cap to refill the bottles. I've always been a fan of White Lightning Lube and this meets the criteria. I lube the bike chain once every two rides or after about 10 hours of riding (more so if you're riding in the rain or in the mud/dirt), or after each chain cleaning (I clean the chain with a bicycle degreaser) and have heard great reviews about the Park Tool Chain Cleaning System. While I'm on the subject, if you don't check your chain for wear, use a chain checker and replace the chain prior to it being worn or it may wear out your gears (chainrings and cassette) prematurely. I use the Park Tool Chain Checker - CC-2 and it seems to work fine although some new chains appear to be slightly worn with the Park CC2. The White lightning lube definitely works well to prolong your chain life! Highly Recommended!

Better than nothing, August 22, 2009
By gadgetmaster (Austin, TX United States)
|

Might be good for long term storage to prevent rust, but as a lubricant it is very poor. WD-40 and olive oil are better choices for actually riding. Chain waxes may be appropriate for motorcycles, but for human powered bicycles every watt is precious. This crap at least doubles drive line losses.

Ride the Lightning, March 27, 2011
By rohe

White Lightning has been around a long time. For dry desert riding it remains much better than "Wetter" alternatives that trap dust and sand on the drive train.
This size... 32oz's is a great price ... gets the standard 8oz size down to about $7.80 ... much better than the MSRP of 11.99 for 8oz.

Good lube, January 12, 2011
By Stephen L. Wright (Pennsylvania)
|
|
I don't like the mess of oil, so I have used this for years. The trick is to thoroughly degrease your chain before using it. Then I apply it after every few rides. Chains seems to last a long time. No cleaning is needed -- just add more White Lightning (now Clean Ride), and then wipe off the excess with an old towel. It should be dry before riding, so I lube when I finish a ride.

Really good lube, July 7, 2010
By randyt5194 (720 mps from home)

I've got just over 7,000 miles on my current chain. I have used Clean Ride on it from the get-go, and it's still riding nearly as good as new. I reapply lube about every 100-200 miles; every 100 if I've been on the road more, 200 if I've been on the trainer more.
As they all say, start with a clean chain. Wash your chain every 1000 miles (or more often).

excellent, July 6, 2010
By Brian Lott

excellent stuff. I've used this on my chain for around seven years now, and never had a problem. I ride over a lot of dirt, and never have a problem. I used to oil my chain, and had to clean it almost constantly. This stuff picks up almost no dirt in comparison.
Contrary to what another reviewer said, I don't see any energy loss in the chain.
I wouldn't use or recommend anything else.

Helps with chain durability., November 16, 2011

I've used other lubes but this one has worked best for me to keep the chains on my 4 bikes lasting as long as possible. I ride 5-6K miles a year (year round in the northeast) through the cold of winter to the warmth of summer and in combination with regular cleanings (every 150 miles or so) and relubing the chain every weekend with Clean Ride, I can get between 1-3K miles from a chain depending on use (My mountain and CX bikes spend more time in wet and dirty conditions.)

By Doc p30 (Tampa, FL)

I've been using White Lightning Wax chain lube since 2004 on my mountain bike. I love this stuff! It definitely is self cleaning. You want to make sure to degrease your chain if it originally had an oil based lube on it before applying the white lightning. This product has helped keep my chain dirt and rust free.

Impressive, May 29, 2010
By J. Anderson (MN)

I have tried a few different chain lubricant's and non of them kept my chain clean and nice like this product. I highly, highly recommend this chain lube if you want a to keep a low maintanence and very clean drivetrain on your bicycle. There are some drawback's to using this product for example it last's probably 40 miles between treatment's and also make sure when you apply it to lightly wipe of the excess beause it shed's dirt and grease very well and it can splatter on you just a little. This company also makes a (epic ride and wet ride) product and in the future I would like to try one of those.

Chain slips endlessly after application, August 19, 2011
By 4URINFO

Don't know if I did something wrong, but this stuff made my chain slip on front and rear derailleur so badly I couldn't pedal even with little force applied to pedals. Made bike into an exercycle that went nowhere. I had to remove it thoroughly with degreaser to get back to normal. It was a waste of money and time.

Works Well on Speedplay cleats, January 30, 2012
By J Pugh (NC)
|
|
I have Speedplay X and Zero pedals and cleats. The spring in the X cleat and the retention ring in the Zero cleats require lubrication fairly often. I used teflon on the X springs and they lasted for 7+ years with no problem. My local bike shop recommended Clean Ride as a better alternative and they seem to keep the mechanism working well after one season with 2000+ miles.

This stuff works., December 13, 2011
By Vito A. Palazzo

My chain was a mess. I was in a box store looking at some bicycle stuff and saw this chain lube that I never saw before. So I decided to try it. Also next to it was a degreaser made by the same company. After using this my chain was almost new looking. Dirt literally falls off your chain. I apply the lube to the chain once a week and I also use it after a wet ride(rain). You will notice a better shift in your gears as well. Highly recommend. Throw the WD40 away.

Works for me, December 11, 2011
By Leroy

I will be buying more of this when I run out, and it works for me.
I got this about a month after it started snowing because my bike chain was visibly rusting (b/c of snow/road salt).
I lube my bike after a rainy ride and once/week. I do ~100 miles/week. During the thick of snow season, I wipe off the chain every day to get the road salt off, and I use the lube maybe 2-3 times a week. Seems to prevent rust, creakiness fine this way.

Stays clean, December 3, 2011
By RW (San Francisco, CA United States)
|
|
I really like this lube for my commute bike. Instead of a black greasy mess, if my pant leg accidentally touches the chain, it usually stays clean, or at worst, a light grey smudge that's easy to remove. I started using White Lightning years ago when I was parking my bike in my living room so I didn't accidentally leave a greasy chain tattoo on my couch (that's a mistake you usually only make once!)
It seems to do a good job of lubrication, though I do reapply frequently - I usually reapply every week, or even more often if I've been riding in the rain. It's easy to do and only takes about 30 seconds.

It's not cheap upfront but if you ride heavy, November 4, 2011
By John Public (Michigan)

miles you will make up for the cost by not having to replace your chain as often, especially if you use quality chain. It was initially annoying how often I had to add the lube to the chain but now it's just become part of the preparation for every ride. It does keep the chain pretty clean and quiet. Don't forget to shake the bottle well before each use!
