3.0 out of 5 stars.  You get what you pay for, April 25, 2011
By fhioc
This is my first time to use a pannier system on my bike. I needed something that had a lot of room for an inexpensive price. For $50 that is exactly what I got. Over all the 3-bag system seems to be pretty well made. There is definitely a lot of room for all the items I need to carry. Like one of the other persons reviews one of the main things I noticed right away was the cheap zipper system. They are definetly not heavy duty. The main problem with the zippers are in the corners of the bags where is it really difficult to pull the zipper around. other than that they seem ok. But like I said, You get what you pay for. I suppose these could be considered a good entry level bag system. I am defintely getting something a little more rugged soon though. I'll give three stars for the overall construction, but -2 for the cheap zippers which are one of the most important assets of the bags.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect, June 14, 2011
By Felipe De la Peņa
I love these panniers. They have plenty of storage. They are perfect for groceries: I've even put 10 lt. squared water boxes on each side and they fit perfectly. They are designed for the old racks system (not the new racks with rail) but they have locks you may use to fit them to any rack system. They are surprisingly light and keeps groceries cool in the inside. They are easily assembled/disassembled. I used them in a schwinn Gateway and using right now in a Marin Bridgeway. I had loaded the panniers with up to 60 lbs of groceries and they worked just fine. This is a great product and I would recommend it to all my friends that would need one.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Horrible Construction, Ridiculous Size, June 11, 2011
By Jer (Warren, PA)
I bought this due to the many positive reviews, and the low price.

Well, you get what you pay for. The zippers are horrible - you have to fight with every one of them when trying to get them around corners. The zippers are so annoying, in fact - I'd avoid buying it entirely for that reason. It will drive you nuts. The material is very thin and easy to rip. There is NO padding at all. You have to construct the sides yourself with included panels, which aren't sized exactly to the space they get inserted into.

The size of the top bag is ridiculous. It is so wide that you'd have to pack it full of clothes or towels if you wanted to carry anything that you don't want sliding around in it, throwing your center of balance from side to side.

The size of the side bags is... awkward. They are large (huge, actually) but due to the tapering, they end up being relatively useless. They appear large enough to carry a 15" laptop, but the tapering makes it stick out the top corner by a few inches, so you can't close the bag.

The only good thing about this bag is that it's easy to attach to any bike rack. But seriously, it's so large, the only thing I think it would be useful for is occasional grocery runs, or carrying soft goods like clothes.

I returned this and went with the Topeak MTX DXP, which is totally worth the price, but you need their quick-release rack as well (or some MacGuyver skills like I used to attach it)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bag system, January 1, 2011
By Ron Lunsford (Everett, WA)
Works great for my commute to work. Top detachable bag replaced my laptop bag and the saddle bags have a ton of storage. Would be completely a 5 star item, except the zippers are a bit stubborn at times and the 'hard sides' are a bit flimsy. Overall these bags get a definite recommendation from me!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Worked great until the top-bag zipper broke, February 10, 2011
By B. Lachance
I used this for about two weeks before the main zipper for the top-bag broke. From the start, I could tell it was a cheap zipper. I just didn't expect the teeth to start to unravel and make the whole purchase a waste. The other zippers on the bag would have probably met the same fate if I used them as much as the top-bag.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Starter, June 29, 2011

I wanted to have some storage capacity and was not familiar with panniers and their functionality. These are very good for the money. Great storage capacity. Top pack large enough for my computer and commuting.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Smelly and Cheaply Constructed, June 9, 2011
By Timber Merchant
This is the first set of panniers I've ever owned, but I'm not sure I'll be able to use them. The first thing I noticed when opening the box, was a harsh chemical smell. I let them air-out for a week and they still stink. If the smell does not abate, I don't see how I can store any clothes, bedding, or even my tent inside those bags. At this point, I'm sure anything I put in there would get inundated with the smell, which does make me nauseous.

The second negative on this product are the zippers, especially on the external compartments. It was nearly impossible to get some of those zippers opened or closed. The most frustration came at the compartment corners. The larger compartments were much easier to open.

Third, the quality of the zippers and buckles is low. Basically, they're just plastic.

The fourth issue is no instructions. Not that it is a big deal, but they do include some thin flexible plastic/vinyl "ribs" (I guess you'd call them), and it's not apparent right away what their use is. Basically, you install them in the bags to give them some rigidity.

After having bashed the product, I will say that I do think the basic design is good. I like how the pieces fit together, the many compartments, the reflective stripes, the angled design to alleviate foot strikes, and the shoulder pads that can turn the top piece into a rucksack.

If it weren't for the smell and the poor zipper system, I'd give it 4 stars. After spending over $60 for the panniers and the rain cover, I'll be unhappy, if the smell doesn't go away.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Traveling Europe, May 21, 2011

Great purchase. I took it to Europe. I rented a bike in Amsterdam and rode to Belgium. The bags where perfect. The only thing is the zippers are a little tricky. Hard to close the side panels.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent pannier, with the right rack, May 11, 2011
By David Valentine (Ester, Alaska USA)
I would characterize this pannier as 2-piece rather than 3-piece: a top case that is actually a nifty briefcase with built-in backpack straps and the pannier itself, which is actually more like a saddlebag that drapes across the bike rack; the bags themselves do not separate. Overall, this set gives me all the room I could possibly want for commuting, and the quick release top-case/briefcase is a really nice feature. There are lots of pockets to help keep me organized.

Mounting can be problematic. On the first, fairly standard rack I mounted it on, I found it difficult to get the pannier attached firmly enough that it wouldn't shift side-to-side or even fore-and-aft. The attachment system just seemed designed for a different rack. Sure enough, when I bought and tried the M-Wave rack, the attachment was far more secure.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Inexpensive but worth the price., February 2, 2011

I bought these as I'm getting back into cycling. Shipping was quick and mounting was straight forward. I have noticed that they have cheap zippers and buckles. I am happy with them for what I paid though. I did not expect professional grade for the price.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Are these really made for a bike?, January 6, 2012
By No Name (Colorado)
My first impression was, the panniers are sturdy, I like the reflectors on the back, and there is plenty of room. My second impression, when I tried to fit these on a bike, was that they don't fit the most standard shaped bike racks. So first, the bad: The top part is too long to sit properly on the top of the rack, and two short to sit evenly. I'm unsure how these are supposed to sit without getting in the way of the wheels. I tried and then two friends tried, on three different bikes and bike racks to make the thing sit securely and properly, and it just won't. That's actually how I got them, someone gave them to me because they hated them so much. Setting it up like in the description made it get caught in the spokes. The only way to set it up was in a very lopsided way and it still didn't feel very secure. Also these bags are HEAVY. It's noticeable even when they're empty. I used to have a pair from the 80's, raincoat material with a little plastic frame in it and they were much lighter, much cheaper, and much easier to set up.

The good:
Though the lopsidedness didn't change when I loaded it fully, it didn't become any less secure. I didn't buy this for touring, but on long bike rides with these fully loaded with heavy stuff, they didn't move around very much even over bumps. They have a lot of space and lots of nice little pockets for keys and phones and the back most pocket is just the right size for a squeeze bottle of ketchup (if you plan to go on picnics). The taper in the front of the bags is very nice and I never have problems kicking the panniers. If I can get them set up so they don't move, I can forget they're there (minus the weight of course) and don't need to adjust them at all.

Overall though, not a fan of these. I got them for free and still think I overpaid.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Plenty of Space and easy to install, September 20, 2010
By PacificCoastTourer
I used this 3-piece pannier on a trip along the Pacific Coast of California and they worked great! The trip was over 900 miles and took about two weeks to complete. I also purchased the waterproof cover and although I didn't run into much weather on this trip, it was easy to put on, fit nicely and seemed like it would work well at keeping out moisture.

The bags were a snap to install and remove and they had plenty of room for all my gear. The only difficulty is installing the hard plastic pieces that give the bags some rigidity, but it was well worth the time and trouble installing them.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  pretty god, September 12, 2010
By moon
So far I am pleased with my M-Wave Pannier. It has a good amount of space, and is easy to attach and un-attatch to my bike. I purchased the M-Wave ""bicycle carrying rack"" with it, which was a good choice, as there is an aspect that specifically helps this unit connect. Kind of like a hinge that fits specifically to both the bags and the carrying rack. The top bag can slide around a little, but that can be easily adjusted and tightened. The top bag easily fits my laptop, which most other bags fail to do. For $45, it was a great purchase and I am very happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great buy, September 7, 2010
By cww58
I'm very happy with these saddle bags. The two that hang on ether side of the rear tire have plenty of room. They do have tapered side's toward the front of the bike. This keeps you from kicking the bag as you peddle. The top bag has simple click an lock clips. It also comes with a shoulder strap, to carry around by.
The only thing I didn't like was the lack of instructions on placing the bag inserts. The wider one's go in the saddle bags. The other are for the top bag. It is easiest if you bow the inserts away for the side of the bags. Then insert the ends into the pockets inside the bag. After both ends are in place, just push the bow to the side of the bag.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid, large, and cheap., August 24, 2010
By J. Petersen (Fresno, CA)
Very good set of bags. Lots of space, lots of pockets, low price. If you live in a rainy area, I would recommend getting the rain fly as well. Only cons are that it's a sail for wind (but that comes with any large panniers) and that I wish it were possible to have the top bag strap tighter to the panniers. It straps fairly tight, and there's no danger of that thing coming off, but it will occasionally shift during riding, and it startles me when I'm not expecting it. Otherwise, no complaints. Performs well, and that removable top bag (which is about the size of a very large laptop bag) is very convenient. Definitely recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for the money, August 20, 2010
By G. ambrose
I purchased these recently so that I could start biking to work. They are relatively light weight, good reflection and the fabric isn't paper thin. The zippers seem a bit flimsy so I reccomend being careful not to pack too much into the bags. Lots of space. I currently take rain gear, emergency first aid kit(ya never know), work shoes, pants and shirt plus lunch and a tire repair kit. I have plenty of room left and could easily fit in a laptop.

I would reccomend these to other people looking for saddlebags.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fair value for the money, December 11, 2011
By Cheri (Mexico)
This isn't a top-of-the-line set of panniers, but it's a decent entry-level set at a very good price. I didn't notice any harsh chemical smells, but I did see how the zipper could easily be damaged if you weren't careful. Before using it, try rubbing a bar of soap around the corners on both sides of the zipper. It won't completely solve the problem, but it should make it a bit more manageable. JUST GO SLOWLY WHEN USING THE ZIP. I have no problems w/the material. It's like a lot of inexpensive luggage...relatively sturdy, but it's going to have a shorter shelf life than the expensive "name" brands. Once I got over the head scratching, I really liked the inserts. Yes, I like the inserts! Below, I'll give a detailed explanation of how to insert them, but the thing I like is what makes them so frustrating...the insertion. They're simple and what's nice is that the panniers will lie flat when they're out. This makes them perfect for tossing in a bag or suitcase when you're travelling. The bulk is greatly reduced. You have a LOT of room. Again, expense was spared in the buckle department, so just don't be a gorilla when using them and they should hold up. If not, it's no big whoop to replace them...just as you would have to do if you'd bought an inexpensive set of luggage. Overall, I'm really pleased with this purchase. If you treat these with care, you'll be pleased with them too.

HOW TO PLACE THE INSERTS:

1. Lay the saddle bags flat so that one bag is on your left and one on your right.
2. Carefully open up the zippers on each side.
3. Feel inside and you'll notice little "pockets" on top of the side and at the bottom of the side. Each little pocket has two parts (actually two pockets).
4. Take one of the 4 WIDE inserts and carefully insert it in the top pocket and then at the bottom. MAKE SURE THAT THE INSERTS ARE ACTUALLY IN, NOT CAUGHT ON THE EDGE. The insert will bow, but if you gently push, it will slide into place in the pocket.
5. Repeat for all four saddlebags.
6. Open up the top bag.
7. Carefully open up the zippers.
8. You'll see that the pockets are on each side for the inserts to go on the top and bottom.
9. Repeat step 4 with the thinner inserts.
10. Voilá!

I hope that helps.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Infinitely Annoying, Cheap Construction, November 23, 2011
By Jersey Sam
Don't bother. Unless you're broke and desperate. I've had these for less than a year and I finally can't stand them anymore. 1) The pannier zippers don't work - none of them. This means you will eventually give up and leave them permanently open. This means when you get caught in the rain or leave your bike in the dew, all your stuff will get wet, and the bottom of the bags will get gross. Also, some of your stuff may jump out the top when you hit a bump. You will grin and bear it because these zippers are just too annoying to mess with. 2) The material is fairly cheap and the design isn't well thought out. You can try to tighten things down, but the webbing will eventually work itself loose. This means that you will have many points of extreme friction, which will create holes in the bottom corners. This will suck. If you put small tools in there, they may fall through the holes. 3) The backpack seems like a great idea and a great bargain, but it's annoying and does not work as intended. It will not stay secure on top of the rack. You can try to tighten things down but it won't work. Eventually the buckles will come off. If you try to use it as a backpack or as a daypack, you will realize just how poorly designed it really is. The mesh is nice, the main compartment is fairly nice, but the two front pockets are utterly useless. This will annoy the hell out of you until you get a different product. (I'm going to try more expensive but better constructed panniers by Arkel - will let you know how it goes.)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Worked Great for Us, October 30, 2011
By kim-e
We bought this pannier set for our six day trip riding the Katy Trail from end to end. We also used them on some shorter bike trips to carry our tools and picnic items. They worked great for us. They are very roomy and we were able to fit everything we needed for a long trip. That being said, the zippers are very temperamental. I often had to unzip and rezip because they would not zip correctly especially around the corners. They did make it through the trip and we are planning another 300 mile trip with them. I will be bring some duct tape in case the zippers totally break. All in all it was a great purchase for the price. I would recommend them for people who are only going to occasionally need them. If you need a pannier to use every day you may want to spend more for higher quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great M-Wave 3- Piece Pannier Bags, October 10, 2011
By G. Cooper (Woodbridge, VA)
I'm very happy with these saddle bags. I just got them today and put them on my bike. The fit perfectly. The two that hang on ether side of the rear tire have plenty of room. They do have tapered side's toward the front of the bike. This keeps you from kicking the bag as you peddle. The top bag has simple click an lock clips. It also comes with a shoulder strap, to carry around by. Just like reviewer "ccw58", I did have trouble with the inserts at first (since no instructions were provided). But I did remembered to view his review and quickly figured it out. These bags will allow me to use my bike to go grocery shopping, picnics with girlfriend, and so on. A 1001 uses. And it was at a great price too. I also ordered the M-Wave Rain Cover but it hasn't arrived yet.

I will have the chance to try them out next weekend for sure when I hit the W&OD trail again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Can't beat it for the Price, September 21, 2011
By Nhorton
These bags aren't "Perfect" but for the money you absolutely can't beat them. I took them on two different week long solo tours and had no problems. These bags are on my bike every day. Once a week I do a large social ride on a trail (Taco Ride in Iowa) and I load it full of all the beverages and coldies that I can get my hands on. I have had zero issues.

I also use these bags as my daily commuter bags and they have withstood the test so far. I've used them everyday for an entire bike season and been impressed.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  DO NOT waste your money, September 18, 2011
By coachmachado
First off, I received the wrong item.

Kudos to Amazon for correcting that however.

When I did get my item, it was MUCH LARGER than most normal bike panniers.

Secondly, everything aspect of it is SHODDY:
-The material is very plastic-feeling and doesn't seem durable.
-The zippers slipped AS I WAS TESTING THEM OUT
-The plastic clips that hold everything together were flimsy ( I fixed that with my own replacement clips/straps from REI)

-The optional raincover? $12 of thin plastic.

Return it? Not anymore, now that I've modified it to make it useable.

Live and learn; next time, I'm sticking to the more-expensive brand names.....

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great first pannier set!, August 9, 2011
By LApagmom02 (Santa Monica, CA)
I am new to using a pannier system. I live in an area perfect for commuting with a bike and wanted something for marketing as well as taking all my gear as a massage therapist to the clinic.

The top bag is a lot roomier than I expected it to be (as others have mentioned) but it works for carrying my massage gear -- and my bolster fits perfectly on top in the bungee section. The side panniers are perfect for groceries and are very roomy.

Like others have mentioned, the zipper system sucks and the plastic "ribbing" is a pain in the butt to install -- hence the removal of a star.

I think for someone who wants a basic system for puttering around town this is a great set to start with.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Outstanding quality and value..., June 30, 2011

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Not perfect but good for the price, May 11, 2011
By JP
Pros:

-Lots of room with the top bag. I bike commute and needed something that could hold my lunch, laptop, work clothes and shoes, and my running stuff (running shoes, extra socks, shirt and shorts) if I plan on going for a run on my lunch break. A friend at work gave me an old pair of water resistant panniers but they are small and and didn't have pockets on the outside so they weren't working for my commute needs. These panniers seem to have enough room.

-Front of the panniers are tapered so even if you have large feet (I'm size 12 mens) your feet don't hit the bags when you pedal.

-Plenty of pocket space on the outside. This is convenient for storing things like my cell phone, keys, wallet, bike lock and other small items so I don't need to dig to the bottom of the panniers to fish them out.

Cons:

-The zippers are a little difficult to zip/unzip around the corners but not a major annoyance.

-The material seems somewhat cheap and thin although I just got these and I'll see how they hold up long term.

-No real easy place to clip a light on the back of the panniers. Since the panniers and bag on top are large, your seat post for the most part is blocked. I leave one of the back pockets partially unzipped so I can clip a light on the rear, which seems to work OK.

-As others have mentioned the flat plastic pieces that come with the panniers to make the bags more rigid are difficult to install. I understand the manufacturer leaves these out to keep shipping costs down but I would have gladly paid another $10 if these were already installed. I struggled with this for about 15 minutes but finally got them in.

Overall:

I rate this item 4 stars overall. There are some things I don't like about them but overall I feel like this is a good value for about $45. You can easily spend over $100 for panniers that are water resistant and higher build quality, but I think these panniers will probably last me at least a few years, maybe more. The material as I stated is pretty thin and if there is a solid rain the material isn't going to keep much water out, so I suggest getting the rain cover as well. The downside to getting the rain cover is for whatever reason it's often on backorder. The first time I ordered the rain cover it took about 3 weeks before it actually shipped.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  LOVE this set!, February 27, 2012
By Keeshia Barker
I put off getting panniers till I felt like I absolutely needed them and just made due with baskets. This set has a ton of space and fits fine on my small frame bike (I had worries about it looking overpowering). Very quick to get on and off, just three snaps to deal with. Setup was easy, you just have to put in the hard plastic panels that make the bags stand open, which takes about 10 minutes, and putting them on the bike takes maybe 2 or 3 minutes. Very happy with this purchase :)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Lots of space, detachable pack, zippers suck, February 6, 2012
By defenestrator (USA)
The title pretty much says it all. But I will expand on this to meet the min word requirement for a review.

Positives:
-Detachable top bag which is a separate backpack/briefcase
-saddle bags are big. Can fit an XL Army uniform part and an Army Combat Boot(size 12 wide) in the each of main pocket along with small things like socks

-reflective strips on the back of the saddlebags. I like this because one of things I wanted while making this riding kit was visibility.

Negatives:
-Zippers. Other people have mentioned this also. they say YKK on them but I have never had a zipper bind or double feed or split behind the pull this much. the teeth are small and they sometimes don't mesh either. Big negative.
-Smell- This is not high quality EMS/REI gear. This is definitly "very few steps away from the petroleum of which it is made". In other words, it has the cheap Chinese plastic smell.

Overall- it fits my needs and I was on a budget. So it will let me ride to work and carry my uniforms and associated gear, but over all quality is less than what I hoped for.
