Dynamic, sporty, and elegant, the Sigma BC 1909 STS triple wireless bike computer is ideal for fitness-minded cyclists who place a high emphasis on measuring heart rate and calories burned. The BC 1909 STS, which is adjustable to fit two wheel sizes, displays your current speed, average speed, and maximum speed, so you'll have a good idea whether you're the tortoise or the hare on the bike trail. You can also compare your current and average speed on the same screen, or check the trip distance and total distance (the latter is only available after your ride). The computer even offers a programmable trip section counter, a roadbook that lets you create a back-and-forth itinerary.

The BC 1909 STS's HR functions include ECG-precise measurements of your actual, average, and maximum heart rate, along with a zone alarm that tells you when you're exceeding or falling below your target heart rate. In the process, the computer keeps track of your calories burned thus far. The BC 1909 STS also includes a number of time-specific functions, including a countdown timer that's perfect for racing against the clock; a stopwatch that keeps you sharp on intervals; a display for elapsed and total riding time (the latter is only available after your ride); and a time-keeping clock. And serious cyclists can opt to use the cadence functions (current and average), which help you ride efficiently both on the road and in the woods. You can also turn off the cadence functions while riding.

The BC 1909 STS is versatile in other ways, too, with the ability to automatically recognize a second bike. That means you can gauge the total distance and ride time of either or both bikes, a handy option for couples or friends who train together. Other features include a temperature display, seven language settings, a backlight, a battery status display, and a backup function that preserves your settings and info even when the battery dies. The PC-compatible BC 1909 STS is also available in a wired version.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very positive thus far...., February 22, 2011
By Even Keeled (S.E. USA)
My girlfriend and I each individually purchased the BC-1909 computer for our respective road bikes. We both wanted to have Speed, Cadence & HRM on one unit. We been on about 5 rides thus far and the units have performed as expected. We ride very close to each other and despite having the same exact computers, we have not had any cross talk issues -- the units simply do what they are designed to do. I installed both computers myself and installation was very straightfoward. The units look and feel high quality and the display is large, sharp and legible. Thus far, we have had zero issues with HRM monitoring on either computer. If I had to be critical I would make one primary observation -- the headunit isn't super snug when locked onto its mounting bracket. While is does make a clear and distinct click noise when twisted onto it bracket, it is still not as solid a connection as my old wired VDO unit. The end result is that if you are not careful, it is possible to accidently knock the headunit off its mounting bracket. The downside of this happening is that the unit will get cracked, scuffed and marred if it hits a solid surface such as asphalt. This actually happened to me and, as a result, a bit of the silver plastic trim has broken off. The display is still fine and it works just like before. Its partially my fault for not being as careful as I could have been; however, the headunit can definitely be build a bit more rugged (probably at the expensive of its current elegent look).

So far, neither of us have experienced any of the issues mentioned by other reviewers here. I could see where it could get real frustrating if one of the functions just suddenly quit. Its important to moisturize the contact points on the HRM strap to get a good clean reading. I picked the computers up on the web for $84.99 and I think the BC-1909 is a killer unit for the money.

By the way, this unit kills the Cateye V3 when it comes to legibility of the headunit data. Its also $50 cheaper to boot.

There is a very clear and concise video on Youtube from Sigma Sport on how to install this unit. The unit comes with all the necessary mounting hardware including a temporary install option (using O rings) and a permanent install option (using zip ties).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fantastic Little Computer, great interface., May 22, 2011
By Aaron
I have used a number of bike computers including CatEye and Bontrager. This is a great midlevel computer, you've got all the bases covered: heart rate, cadence and of course, speed. It includes a number of nifty features to help you analyze your ride.

The display is simple, and has all the readings you would expect from a midlevel bike computer.

The wireless setup couldn't be easier, makes your life a whole lot simpler to set up the sensors. The sensors included can be attached using elastic bands or zip ties. The sensors are black and rather unobtrusive, although they can slip out of place if you use elastic bands instead of zip ties. Oddly enough, the cadence sensor is shaped somewhat like a shark fin, but the only logical way to mount it places it backwards, in a non-aero position. But who cares? Still looks fine.

The main display mounting bracket has space for zip ties as well as a one-time adhesive pad to keep the thing in place. I used this pad on an old pair of bars and realized that once applied, it is a pain to get off, and ended up ripping the pad. No big deal, you can still use zip ties or elastic bands to hold it on. The bracket works for both horizontal and vertical orientations. A simple twist of the wrist removes the computer.

One of the nice things about this computer, and one of the best, is the simplicity of the interface. It simply makes sense. The other computers I have used are not nearly this simple to use, requiring frequent rereads of the manual to understand how it works. I only read the manual once to learn how to use the computer initially, and never had to again. When you're on the bike, being able to see the information you want quickly is important, because you need to pay attention to the road.

The sensors all synced up quickly with the unit, within a few second's worth of use. Sometimes the heart rate monitor or the cadence sensor won't sync, no problem, just hit the sync reset button or remove and replace the computer from the bracket and all the sensors will re-establish connection. The heart rate monitor is comfortable and doesn't restrict breathing.

This computer has a BIKE 1 and BIKE 2 option, which allows you to set a different wheel size and odometer for a second bike, but oddly, in order to utilize it, apparently you have to buy a complete second "Bike 2" set of sensors from Sigma. For someone like me who may have different bikes but just wants to put the computer on another bike, this is a pain in the butt. I wish that the BIKE 2 option would allow a manual setting. You can work around it by setting the second wheel size manually and setting odometer readings yourself, but again, a pain in the butt. Isn't interchangeability half the point of a wireless setup?

I would not recommend using this computer for mountain biking. If you crash frequently, the display scratches far too easily, and the computer is likely to pop off during a crash. I think this computer is more geared to road riding anyways.

Some improvements I could list would be to have a slightly larger display and a brighter backlight. While the backlight function is useful it is not quite bright enough for my liking (bad night eyes) and it turns off too soon for me to be able to see changes in the values on the screen. (Turns on within three seconds). The nice thing though is that the backlight DOES turn off automatically, but if you interact with the computer in any way during backlight mode, it will continue to turn on when you press the buttons. You don't have to start the backlight every time you want to see something, which is nice. It resets when you stop moving.

This computer does not support ANT+, so if you are using DuoTrap sensors, they will not sync. Get a nicer computer for that. No GPS obviously. But for most people, this is plenty of computer, and has all your bases covered. I think this computer will last me a long time.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Great When it Works, September 12, 2011
By Steve Jarvis (Tennessee)
I've got over 300 miles on this computer, and I really like it when it works:

Here is what I really like:
- The display is great. It is easy to see cadence, speed, heart rate and your choice of one other variable. I usually choose total distance.
- The averages for HR, Cadence, speed, etc. are interesting; I like to compare performance between different outings on the same course.
- The total ODO is neat. WIthout it, I would not know I've ridden over 300 miles with the computer because there is no other memory. Because you want to delete your prior workout before you start a new one, you'd lose the total miles without that ODO feature.

Now, here is what I really don't like at all: This thing takes intermittent breaks. The computer remains functional, but all three inputs simultaneously drop off line. No Cadence, no HR, no Speed. When it is ready, they all come back at once. This wouldn't bother me except that while it is on break, it is not calculating distance, so it is possible to be off by several miles depending on how long the sensors are off line.

I have a theory about the cause of the problem: Interference. My headlight and this thing don't get along at all. I turn on the light, and the sensors go off line. I removed the light and the problem was greatly reduced, but sometimes the problem still recurs. Now when it goes off line, I look around for other potential sources of interference. In group rides, I suspect other bike computers. When riding solo, I wonder about garage door openers, cell phone towers, cagers with plates in their head, etc. Whatever the source of the problem, it is a problem. I really don't think it is the sending units since all three drop out at the same time, and as I said, the computer seems to have power during the outages.

If you don't mind losing some data here and there, this thing is great. If you're a data junkie and you want accurate data on all your rides, you might want to keep looking.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice, if you pay attention when you install it., February 23, 2011
By A Customer
So, after reading some of the other reviews on this unit, I felt obligated to toss my own in. I picked this up with my shiny new Cannondale Synapse, and I have thusfar been pleased. The ONLY issue I've encountered has been with the speed sensor being on the rear wheel.. (I ride my bike on the trainer a lot currently, and wanted it on the rear wheel because of that) - I actually found that moving the speed sensor from the chain stay to directly next to the cadence sensor fixed that issue for me. I'd imagine if I had installed the sensor on the front fork (as most speed sensors are) that I wouldn't have any issues at all. The heart rate and cadence functions work just fine for me as well, and I haven't experienced them cutting out. All 3 of the sensors take maybe 5 -10 seconds of activity to sync up properly, but after that they're pretty solid.

As far as magnet distance, I've not had any problem with that at all, the only issues I had were with with the aforementioned wireless transmission. If you read the directions that come with the unit, you can get an idea of how you need to install the transmitters to get them to operate properly.

Again, I'm nothing but pleased with this unit for the $70.00 that I paid for it. if worse really came to worse, and the speed sensor started acting flaky on the rear wheel where I have it positioned now, I'd pick up the wired speed sensor for my road bike, and toss the wireless receiver on my secondary bicycle and take advantage of the 2-bike mode of this computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Customer Service Is Excellent, February 20, 2011
By Average Guy
I initially had issues with the heart monitor on this bike computer. Customer Service quickly resolved the situation and sent me a new computer at no cost. The new computer works perfectly and I am very happy. An excellent company that stands behind their products.

I now give it five stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Thought it was good, June 24, 2010
By Mike (St. Louis, MO)
I purchased this computer because of great features & easy to read. The downfall is after about 5 rides came back & computer was missing. I liked this computer so I bought another one. After couple rides went on a group ride, thankfully someone behind me seen a computer bouncing. It was mine again. It's broke but some what working. I contacted the company & of course they haven't heard of any problems. If you purchase this computer good luck keeping it on your bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Love it but hate it intermittently, November 29, 2011
By Colonel Electron
Pros

Big bold and easy to read display
Easy to push buttons and intuitive interface
Interfaces well with computer (must purchase USB connector and application separately)
Good design--ergonomics
Quality build
Fastens securely and easily to bicycle
Easy battery replacement

Cons

The display will intermittently stop displaying distance & speed (cadence and HR still work). After a few seconds up to a minute the speed and distance will be displayed again and it seems that the computer has continued to track the correct distance covered and speed even though it has not displayed either for the duration of the intermittent behavior. Weird. It seems others have noticed this oddness and remarked on it in reviews of the product. Tried all the tips here but no love:[...]

Would like to see a smartphone integration app for Apple and Android. C'mon Sigma.

Woulda given 5 stars were it not for the intermittent behavior.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  What a pain to set up!!!, November 14, 2010
By Henry Martinez (Hyattsville, MD United States)
well, this thing was fantastic WHEN it worked, and a royal pain the rest of the time. it' s a chore to set up becasue you have to install sensors for the heart rate and for the speed. it's incredibly sensitive as far as the magnets is concerned. the magnets have to be just the right distance from the sensor or esle! Eventually it got to the point there not matter what i did it would stop reading, always in the middle of my ride! I simply had to remove it and go back to my trek. granted, when it did work it's great. it has an excellent display showing you everything you did to know....sadly, i'd always end up losing either the heart rate redaings or the speed, and given the pain of setting up, I just didn't want to keep wasting time trying to shift it the millimeter or two so that the magnets and sensor where close enough. Get something else. you'll be mad at yoruself for bying this thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  best for the money...but, September 29, 2011
By Robert Inverso (west palm beach)
i love the features and accurecy of this bike computer. only problem is, my home PC went down and i lost all history of the years rides. backup is advised. i just bought my second one, thats how much i like it. after only one year of use. it is so nice to remove from the bike and download to the computer and track all your rides. problem is at some point you drop it, and the plastic trim cracks over time and the buttons will not function, had to temporially tape it, till my new one arrived. also it is very easy to install.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Comes off the base with a touch, September 9, 2011
By ardatun
It's a good bike computer. But it has a crack on the upper right now, because when I was carrying the bike I touched it and it fell down. It still works without problems, but it has a scar now.

It can come out of it's base so easy, so be careful when holding the bars.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Very disappointed, August 30, 2011
By Avid consumer
Bought for my husband who was initially happy as it was reasonably easy to install and to use on the road. However during his fifth ride at around mile 30 it started showing a speed of zero. A few minutes later it resumed showing the correct speed. This pattern repeated itself for the rest of the ride resulting in a 60 mile ride showing as 54 miles. Similar experience in the next ride. In his latest and now final ride with this item, on Sunday at Ironman Louisville it worked until around the 40 mile mark and then stopped working completely for the rest of the race except for a two minute burst near the end of the bike leg. So the product completely failed in what it was purchased for - providing a guide as to speed, cadence and distance to allow my husband to manage his training and racing.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't waste your time with this company, July 10, 2011
By JJ
One of the sensors failed 2 weeks after I bought it. No big deal, i'll just email the company and get a new one. Well after 3 emails and a month and a half later I haven't gotten so much as a F you from these worthless lowlifes. After looking at all the high marks I figured this would be no problem. So all I can think is they must have a different owner, a different manager or something, any way I sure wouldn't take a chance on using them again, and better yet I wish I could but my boot up their you know what for not giving me so sort of reply to my many emails. Don't buy from these losers. Bikezilla

1.0 out of 5 stars.  It will not perform as advertised., June 21, 2011
By SaintTammany (South)
This review is from: Sigma BC 1909 STS Triple Wireless Bicycle Speedometer (Sports)
I was excited when I read the specs. Heart Rate, Speed, Cadence, Calories, Auto start stop, 2 bike data, data link and software. It would be perfect for my recumbent and city bike on the street or trainer, or so I thought. The wireless signal wouldn't work on the rear of the recumbent, too far. I ordered the optional wired cable set, too short. Had to splice it. The heart rate and cadence worked well right out of the box, but the speed has a delay. You really can't use it for acceleration or deceleration, and I find that unacceptable. Kcal, the calorie display, by design just doesn't work. Support informed me that it uses a constant (that can't be changed) of 100bpm to begin counting calories. My resting HR is 60. I can ride for hours without going over 100bpm, thus 0. In my opinion this product should be removed from the market and the software should be redesigned. As they say, this is not rocket science. Change a constant to a variable, how hard is that? It clearly went to press without proper evaluation. The company cannot possibly want too deceive it's customers, it's the wrong thing to do, and it's bad business. I hope they fix the problem on the 1909hr and resolve the disputes with the customers before it harms the company. It's too expensive and time consuming to set this up on 2 bikes with the computer software, docking station and 2nd bike sensors only to find out it will not perform as advertised. After a couple of hours and 30 miles, and the calorie display is on 2! There is just something very very wrong about that. As for support, judge for yourself. Quote from support.
"That's not to say your are not still burning a good amount of calories during your rides, the bike computer is just not counting them based upon the formula used. It may not be the answer you were expecting, but I hoped it cleared up your "lower" Kcals."

In my opinion, the product has potential, and is to good for the company to not come up with a 1909hr 2.0.
Until they do, steer clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Warranty is Outstanding, May 17, 2012
By old biker dude
I bought this unit as it had the functions I wanted & had large numbers on the display so I could read it without going aero.

On first ride a small piece broke on top, making it difficult to reset. I called Randy Scott at Sigma & he listened. He is sending a replacement head immediately & was very pleasant to deal with.

Everything should be this easy ! Also note this mfgr has a 2 year warranty, not 90 or 365 days and zero run-around. If you want cadence, it is quickly added via another device for about $30. Great unit and company stands behind it 100%. Bravo Zulu- Sigma..

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Cyclometer for the price, May 9, 2012
By jsimpson
This cyclometer works excellent. Very easy to get installed on the bike. I love the option of not having to use zipties. Each sensor reads accurately, no problems noticed with the heartrate monitor either. As soon as I put it on and am within range of the receiver, it picks up my heartrate and never drops it. The option to connect the cyclometer to the PC via a separate USB dock is also a major plus. Makes it super simple to log each rides data.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  So far so good, April 24, 2012

So far after a quick ride, this cyclometer works great. Pairs up very quickly with all 3 sensors. Never noticed any drops during a 5 mile ride. The small included lotion for the heartrate monitor works very well too. Fitment on my bike was simple and fast.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, just inadequate instructions, April 18, 2012
By Eric E. Haas (Holland, MI USA)
I've been using this for a year now (about 1500 miles).

I really like it. The display mode I use constantly displays current speed, trip distance, current heartrate, and current pedal cadence. I love it.

At first, I was apprehensive about using the little O-Rings as a means of connection. But it seems to be adequately durable and effective.

The documentation is completely inadequate, though. You can generally figure stuff out -- it is really easy. But I would have liked better instructions. For example, in order to reset the data, you had to go through each piece of data and manually and separately reset it (e.g., average speed, average cadence, average heartrate, calories, trip distance, max speed, max heartrate, etc.). But then I accidentally found that there was a simple (but undocumented) way of resetting everything at once. It would have been nice if that were documented in the owner's manual, but it wasn't.

Overall, very happy with this product. All three of the batteries are still working a year later.

I recommend this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Does anybody have one that works?, April 11, 2012
By Father forgive them becaus.. (Atlanta, GA USA)
Great on paper. Great price. Today only the speedometer works. Yesterday everything worked. The day before nothing worked. Rarely the HR has linked. Less often the cadance has linked. I have re-mounted in several locations, same thing. New batteries, same thing. I travled all over Houston, TX looking for a new one figuring I got a dud and time and time again I was told they quit carrying Sigma because of all the returnes. I am a sucker! I can kick myself I ordered the second bike kit and the computer interface. I am over $200 in a bottomless pit of trash. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS S>..

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good product if you don't need GPS, March 28, 2012
By MC
This is a great product, especially at this price. I would rate HR monitor and cadence over GPS any day, it much more useful for training... and you won't get them all at anything like this price. Only complaint is that how the computer clips in could be a little more sturdy.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Did not work on first ride, March 25, 2012
By Bctrider
Okay. When deciding to buy this product I did research it extensively online. I did see many negative reviews, most appeared to find problems after a few rides.
Being the eternal optimist, I said to myself "surely Sigma has sold thousands of these, and I find a few negative reviews, so for the most part it must be a decent product".
When I received the computer, it looked awesome, I was pretty excited. Installation was hassle-free, it picked up all of the sensors without a hitch.
First ride, all I could get it to do was detect heart rate. I gave it a few minutes of riding, nothing else detected. I reset pairing several times, no luck. I removed the battery, started from scratch, no luck. I ensured no local radio interference, no luck. The cadence and wheel sensors were detecting the magnets. I gave it 40 minutes of riding, resetting the pairing several times with still no luck. Heart rate picked up just fine all along.
Returned to Amazon, which I must say was awesome! Fast, no hassle return, free return mailing. Will definitely buy from Amazon again. Just never Sigma.
I also have to say, I have a Sigma rear flashing bike light which is useless. Dim, barely visible, I'll never buy a Sigma product again.

Go buy the Garmin Edge 500. Sure, you'll have to re-mortgage your house but it is a first rate, reliable excellent product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  nice buy, February 22, 2012
By Gail from Florida
A really nice computer for the money. After searching online I finally found the computer I was looking for.It has all the features I wanted and then some. I wanted a computer with heart rate but didn't want to spend a fortune. Easy to read and I even bought a special bracket so I could mount it in between my road bike carbon aero bars. The bike shop guy who installed it for me even said what a nice computer it was and said it was a great price and he was going to order one!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Cusomer service is outstanding, February 21, 2012
By David Simpson (San Jose CA)
There is a lot to like about this cycling computer.
Large display, auto start with a motion sensor so it turns on from sleep mode when you touch the bike, two separate buttons for distance/speed/cadence and heart rate/calorie/stopwatch/clock/temperature/timer(count up and count down)/total odo/trip odo functions so you don't scroll through a long list to get what you want to see, rear wheel mount speed sensor for indoor trainer, handle bar or stem mount for computer, reset individual functions or global reset for all functions but the trip odo.

Perhaps the best part of all is the Docking Station with Software for downloading the computer data to your PC or Mac, available separately, but well worth the price. Statistical analysis and side by side comparison of rides is essential for measuring progress and, for me, inspiration to continue.

There is a warning though. The computer attaches and detaches very easily with clockwise and counterclockwise 15 degree turns respectively. Mine is stem mounted and I carried a U-lock on the right handlebar. When I hit a bump the U-lock knocked the computer off and it cracked the silver retaining ring for the buttons around the top. Well, now the U-lock is in my backpack but I'm missing the top right button. I can still cycle through the heart rate/ calorie functions by poking a wooden match through the hole underneath the missing button. So bear this in mind when riding.

I was going to buy a replacement computer so I E-mailed Sigma about buying just the computer. They responded the next day offering to send me a new unit free of charge. This was totally unexpected and only adds to the virtues of this great cycling computer.

4/6/12 My computer is mounted on the stem. I mounted a Bell LED headlight to the left of the stem on the handlebar so when the headlight is moved back it locks the computer in place without hindering access to the buttons. Moving the headlight forward allows the computer to be removed. A pretty simple solution to the only fault I can find with this computer.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice computer, but heart rate seems off, February 20, 2012

The computer is really nice for the price. I had some issues with the provided zip ties releasing just as I tried to fully snug them down. I think I'm going to buy some new zip ties to make sure I don't lose any of the parts!

My only real complaint is that the heart rate monitor doesn't seem to calculate min, max, and average values without also receiving speed or cadence. I was hoping I could also use it for spinning class to track my progress.

The leds on the transmitters are a nice addition to make sure you're within the required spacing.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Extremely pleased with this product., February 2, 2012

I bought the Sigma for several reasons.
I needed a HRM that was reliable and this product is 100% reliable.
I also wanted the wireless feature so that I could mount the speed/mileage sensor on the back wheel.
I do training on a trainer so I like to track my miles, I know, it not riding outside, however, it fits my need.
I also bought the docking station, and again I am 100% satisfied, although I was a bit confused when I set it up initially. I got to a point where it was asking me to purchase the software. Then I decided to read the directions, and the updated software downloaded and installed correctly, so read the instructions.
This unit has a lot of features for the price. I shopped around and did research for several months before I chose this unit, and I am glad I made this purchase.
I have been cycling for many years, have ridden 10's of thousands of miles, owned at least 6 other units over the years, and with the Sigma I have all I need.
