Great value, a little noisy, August 5, 2010
By H. Tseng (Cambridge, MA United States)
|
|
I ordered from Amazon and just mounted the Malone crossbars on my 2010 Subaru Forester Ltd.
I didn't want to pay the exorbitant dealer or Thule/Yakima prices for something I only rarely use. Malone bars were exactly what I was looking for.
It's a very easy install. I highly recommend using the rubber spacers that are included, they will not only protect your roof rail paint, but also seem to provide a snugger fit to my car. Seems very solid and the built in locks are awesome. Just don't misplace those keys!
I have been driving around with only the 50" bars and have no other rack system or accessories on it. I've noticed that the closer you put the front bar to the front of the car the more noticeable/louder the whistling. There is a very noticeable whistling wind noise above 25 mph. If the radio is off or at low conversation volume I can hear it until I get above 40mph. The whistling goes away but when I get up to highway speeds a low groaning/moaning sound can be heard instead.
The 2010 Forester has a very large panoramic sunroof and to not obstruct the grand sky view, I've put both bars behind it. To keep full use of my large sunroof also makes it more difficult to use a permanent wind fairing to reduce wind noise. But if you use your roof rack a lot and need a wind fairing, INNO makes a universal one in various sizes that will attach to the front of the Malone bars.
This is what I've come up with to reduce wind noise and keep the rack on the roof for when I need it. The further back they go, the less noticeable the noise (at least to the driver, and my opinion is the only one that matters of course!).
Since I only occasionally use the roof rack and it's really easy to adjust, I've actually pushed both bars as close together as possible, as far back as possible for everyday driving around. Clustering the pair together in the way back, seems to help bring down the noticeable noise a lot and it goes a long way to keeping the overall look of the car (especially the roofline more tidy/sleek). One other small thing, I also taped over the ends of the bars with black duct tape to smooth over the small cavity left by the end caps. That also seems to help reduce the whistling a little at lower speeds.
I wish the bars were a little more aerodynamic rather than square steel/aluminum just because of the wind noise, but I still recommend them as a good value well built alternative to the other stuff out there.

Great deal, great alternative to the big named overpriced roof rack companies, May 31, 2010
By Christopher (Minnesota)

I've owned two sets of the Malone Sea Wings for three years. Just bought a new car and needed a new roof rack. Was all set to spend some money on the Thule or Yakima systems, but happened to come across the new Malones on a car fourm.
What a deal. They hold tightly to the roof and are an incredible value for the money. Very happy with my purchase.

Works great for 2010 Subaru Forrester, July 6, 2011
By J. M. Watson
|
|
We purchased this roof rack along with the Inno Easy Mount Dual Kayak Carrier with Universal Mounting System for Car, Truck, or SUV to haul two kayaks on our 2010 Subaru Forrester. It worked great!! We took the system on a 7 hour trip on the interstate for vacation and we didn't have to re-adjust it once! I like that they come with the key lock so you don't have to worry about them being stolen. My husband had them installed in about 5-10 min. We have also used the racks without the inno carrier to carry a canoe as well, no problems with that either! Considering this is a fraction of the price of most other car racks and WAY less than having the Subary factory crossbars installed I would give this 10 stars if I could!

Excellent alternative to the more expensive cross bars!, January 7, 2011
By Mark Zavodnik
|
|
We purchased the Malone 58 inch cross bars for our 2003 Chevy Suburban to carry our Thule Adventurer Cargo Carrier. The Malone bars were much cheaper than the Thule Cross bars and easier to install. Installation took minutes and adjustments were even less than that. The Malone universal roof racks come with locks so there is an added deterrent. Our Thule Cargo Carrier fit perfectly onto the bars, we had no problems with any kind of movement during driving and because the Malone bars are lower than the Thule cross bars, we had no problems with wind noise.
Overall, this is a better, cheaper alternative to the Thule products.

Quality equipment, September 9, 2010
By Kyle Johnson (Marysville, Ca United States)

What can you say. It's good strong functional equipment. Works as advertised, well built, easy to install and has locking caps to prevent removal by casual miscreants. The price was far better than most of what is available from other brands. How can you go wrong?

"Universal" NEVER Means Universal, May 20, 2011
By S. Schuler
|
|
I bought these racks hoping against hope that they would fit my '02 Dodge Caravan, because nothing else in the aftermarket would. Had I consulted the manufacturer's website first it would have saved me a lot of trouble. (Google the product name, and it will pop right up.) The product's website will quickly tell you whether these racks will fit your vehicle. Why didn't someone at Amazon think to include the link in the product description?
Suffice to say, the Malone website says these racks won't fit my minivan, never mind the fact that my van was the vehicle displayed with the roof racks! I got 'em on anyway, but I couldn't open the side doors with one rack in the forward position. I got them on thanks largely to the very flimsy lock covering the adjustment mechanism, which was the part that got in the way of installation. To give some credit to Malone, the instructions say the locks don't make the product theft-proof. They're not kidding. I was able to disassemble the locks pretty easily, install the product, and then pop the locks right back in. Malone could have manufactured these locks differently so that the racks would fit more vehicles. The locks drop down to reveal the adjustment mechanism, which means you need a LOT of clearance between the bottom of the rack and the roof of the vehicle, at least 1" in my estimation. If they had made the locks slide to the side or flip up instead, the racks would fit vehicles like mine with very low-profile hardware on top.
On the bright side, the racks do seem to grip firmly once installed, though you'll want to crank down hard on the hex wrench (included) in order to keep them from moving in use.

Wind Noise, July 7, 2011
By Wes Martin
|
|
I mounted these to my 2011 Ford Explorer to carry items to the beach, a six hour drive. I drove the vehicle the day before we left and the wind noise was very apparent. Enough so that I opted not to mount them for the six hour trip. At 70 mph there is a groaning type sound (whaaaaaaaaaaa) that I did not feel I could listen to for six hours. I am going to keep them for short trip transporting but no way could I listen to that wind noise on an extended driving trip. It is dissapointing to me that I am not willing to use them for long trips so I rated them low.

Finishing Touch, May 15, 2011
By chw (Philadelphia PA metro)

Purchased to fit my 2009 Murano roof rails. They fit securely and are generally esy to install in concert with my kayak carrier by the same manufacturer. Pricing and shipping was satisfactory and the cross rails are easy to install/remove with my kayak trips. Only issue but not a deal breaker is noise from wind resistence,

Super good deal!, November 14, 2010
By Pumpkin Fan (Columbia, PA)
|
|
I sold my Yakima rack because I got sick of buying those little Q-towers pads. My Subaru and Durango had the side rails and it was cheaper to purchase this rack system than to update my Yakima rack. BTW, I use it for my kayak, but mainly for my roof-top cargo box. This rack is US made, can work on either of my SUV's without any special tools or pads, and is rock solid. It is easy to put on, take off and store. I love it and am glad I got it. It isn't quite as heavy as the Yakima rack, but at a least a 1/3 of the cost, who cares. This is great.

I agree with everything I read. Why buy expensive Thule crossbars when these do the trick for much less price? It took me 5 minutes to install and very easy to move around as described.

great racks, reasonably priced, December 7, 2011
By Stephen
|
|
I bought these to attach to a 2011 Forester to transport a canoe, ladders, and occasional lumber. They attach securely, are quiet and the low profile is great. Since they are secured with an allen wrench my ratchet allen set wrench was a handy tool to speed up the attaching procedure, since I do not leave them attached all the time. The keyed cover lock makes it a more secure rack when left unattended. Well made and I'm very satisfied.

The Perfect Rack Alternative, October 29, 2011
By floppy ears
|
|
I was looking for a rack for a 2010 Subaru Forester. I first started looking at the OEM rack and quickly turned to either Thule or Yakima. I priced each of the three options and was not looking forward to paying the high price. After snooping around a few Subaru Forester forums, the Malone rack came up several times, all with good reviews. Due to the reviews on the forum and the price listed on Amazon, it was a hard deal to pass up.
A few days after ordering, the Malone rack arrived at my home. As for installation, it couldn't have been easier. The fit on the Forester was spot on (without the extra spacers). To make things easier, I cut the long end off the allen key and popped it in a wireless drill.
For a basic rack, it has worked extremely well for transporting our kayaks. Does it have fancy aerodynamic crossbars? No. Is it the lightest rack? No. Is it built really well to take some abuse, absolutely. As in a few reviews I've read, the built in locks leave something to be desired as they don't appear to be the sturdiest (my only knock on this rack). They will work as a deterrent, but if someone really wants something, they'll figure out a way to get it no matter how well the item is secured. This can be said for all locking racks.
Would I purchase the same rack again without hesitation? Absolutely!

Good value but a little noisey, October 18, 2011
By BuckyFan
|
|
Purchased these for my 2011 Subaru Forester because I couldn't justify the cost of the factory bars or Yakima/Thule branded cross bars. Although subjective, these bars aren't as slick looking as the factory bars but the work great. Install is extremely easy provided you haven't misplaced your key or allen wrench. These bars do include a locking cover which is a nice touch. They are also fairly light and have a nice rubberized coating on them.
The only downside I've seen so far is the wind noise. On my car, it's noticeable at 25 mph and gets only slightly louder with more speed. Pushing the bars back didn't seem to help for me (although I notice every squeak and rattle). A wind fairing or taping off the end caps as another reviewer suggested may help. I only put the bars on when I need them so it's not a deal breaker for me. If you plan on keeping them on the car 100% of the time, you may want to upgrade to the factory aero bars (and fork over a lot more dough).
Overall, well worth the price of admission.

Holds on tight, well made, October 12, 2011
By Horse Trader (Brooklyn, NY United States)
|
|
It attached easily to my 2011 Forester siderails. I haven't used it for anything yet (hence the 4 stars), but wanted to have it available to tie things to. It's been quiet, even at 75mph. It's well constructed and grabs tight. At someone else's suggestion, I added the rubber spacers even though I didn't really need them for the fit.

Why pay more?, September 29, 2011
By Jack (Fairfax, VA)
|
|
I bought this roof rack for my '11 Forester after extensive research. I decided paying for top name is not necessary considering I only need it for an occasional haul of junk and probably for bikes later. Does it aesthetically look as good as Thule or Yakima? No, but that's not why I bought this. It's the best deal by far and comes w/ locks. That's something you have to pay extra for on the other name brands.

Quality Stuff, August 28, 2011
By Andrew D. Poinsette
|
|
This is an extremely nice roof rack for the price. I use it to carry 2 kayaks on top of my 2006 Subaru Outback. It holds them well with 2 racheting straps and a couple of bow lines. It is less that half the price of the Yakama or Thule racks and does the same thing.
It does make a little noise when driving, but this is easily remedied by putting some tape over the ends of the bars. They have a rubber cap on the end, but it has a recess that makes a whistling sound while driving.
Still definately worth the price.

easy install, good finish, sturdy, August 7, 2011
By roadie (pineapple park, FL, USA)
|
|
you'll get two crossbars w/open endcaps, four 'towers,' two keys, four extra rubber pads, and a hex key
installation was less than 10 minutes (most of the hassle was lining up each tower in between the bolt holes for my Nissan Rogue's factory crossbars (which are more than $200 just for the parts)
i got the 58" rack in case i ever need to transport something larger than just a ladder
these are sturdy racks, so you'll be able to transport in confidence
also felt good to support a made-in-the-USA company (even if they're Maine-iacs!)

Low price, July 19, 2011
By KM

I selected this product because of the price, lower then the other name brands. Installs in less then 30 minutes, used a tape measure to line up on the rails equally. So far I have used them to carry two Kayaks around about 40 pounds each. The included locks are a major plus, since they are an options on the name brands. They fit perfect on my Subaru Outback standard stock roof rails.

Great rack at reasonable price, February 13, 2011
By Rob (Salem, OR United States)

I discovered Malone rack gear last year. I have ordered this rack, kayak racks, and a car-top box from them. I find their products well made and simple to install. Their service is great with the owner replying promptly to questions. Yakima and Thule have become ridiculously overpriced and really need more competition. Glad Malone is providing that.

Great car rack, great price !!, November 10, 2010
By PTHahn (Connecticut)

I just received my Malone universal car rack from Amazon. It is well engineered, rugged and fits nicely to my Mercedes wagon rails with the use of the rubber sizing adapators that come in the box. I wish the system was a little easier to install as the hex wrench (included)is hard to turn. Also, a guide on the width of the rack (three sizes are available)for a particular car would have been helpful too. Overall, I am very satisfied with the product and would recommend it to others.

Perfect for a Subaru Forester, March 21, 2012
By matt151617 (Plattsburgh, NY)

Put this on my 2010 Forester Limited. It fit nicely and snapped right in. I take it off when not in use, it only takes a minute or two. At highway speeds it whistles and makes a good deal of road noise, so I don't leave it on all the time.

Perfect!!! Could not be happier., March 18, 2012
By Guillermo Flores

|
I never write reviews. In fact, I think this is my first review on Amazon though I've been shopping here for years and I'm a prime member. Anyway, to the point at hand, these cross bars are perfect. They fit snugly and securely on my factory side rails (Jeep Liberty). I live in a downtown area and park my car outside so the locks are a great feature. Unlike some reviews on here, I hear absolutely zero noise with these. I have these crossbars coupled with a pair of Yakima LandShark Saddles to carry my kayaks and I could not be happier! To sum things up, they have a tight fit, make no noise, have locks and cost under $100! Oh, and for those of you who may not like the giant red "Malone" name on them, have no fear, it is just a sticker. It came right off and left no residue.

These racks are great. They are super easy to install, no additional tools necessary. Similar crossbars from Thule and Yakima run $300, plus these do not add much height at all. Maybe a couple inches. I needed these to install an Inno locking surfboard rack (also a great product)and they fit the rack just fine. Great value

I needed to get crossbars for my 05 Ford SUV and had a difficult time needing to spend $250 on Thule or Yakima bars. I FINALLY stumbled upon these bars from Malone and they work great at 1/3 the cost of the bigger brands. These work just as well as any brand you'd spend 100's of dollars on. Great find and they fit perfectly.

where to start, it whistles at lower speeds, and it howls at high speeds. There is a old saying, you get what you pay for. Great item, May 10, 2012

I bought these for a 2009 Kia Sportage for use with a Swiss cargo 2 kayak carrier. It was easy to set up and locks very firmly into place. It has been on the car for 2 years now with no adjustments and is just as secure as when initially installed. The kayak carrier installed seamlessly and the crossbar can easily hold the weight of 2 kayaks and the carrier. The key lock is a nice feature too at this price point. I notice no added noise when traveling with these. Would buy again as a cheaper alliterative to Yakima and Thule.

Needed a roof rack for my new canoe i bought. This rack fit on my 2011 subaru forester perfect and tight to the existing rack i had. I like that they lock on with a key so would be hard for someone to steal. Id highly recommend the brackets that you buy separately. With those brackets, my canoe barely needs strapped down when the canoe fits around the brackets. Great product!
