5.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't blow up. Have patience., July 21, 2011
By 4for3.info (New England)
Funny thing is, I was ready to return this thing in a fit of anger being sick of things not working when I buy them. But after a few minutes of forcing myself to make it work, I find that it works just fine. It's user error.

Honestly, I would give this 4 stars due to the packaging. Oddly, it's a small box on a card, however, the unit is exposed which means anything that can scratch it if you ship with other items. There are some cosmetic marks on it, but, as time goes on, I will use it, drop it, scuff it, etc. So, it's fine. I just wish the item was IN the box. The only thing in the box was the battery and limited direction sheet.

I first had no belief that thing was working at all. There are two settings. You will notice the yellow switch at the top, and you slide it to the tire valve type, Presta or Schrader. In my case, and on most bicycles, the valve is a Schrader. On the unit there is a small image of the valves, the Presta looking pointed, and the Schrader more of a stump. So, that simple selection will get you on your way to the next part.

The power button is also a reset button. One click to turn it on... and it will automatically turn off after 30 seconds of non-use. Hold it 3 seconds to shut it off. When taking a reading, and want to reset to 0, hold the power button for 1 second. There is a beep acknowledgment for every action.

Then there is the Unit button where you click once to rotate through 3 choices of PSI, Bar or kg/cm2. For the most part, just getting the correct PSI is all you need. You know the correct PSI and Bar range by looking at the side tread of the tire. Very hard to see, but it's there. In my case, the PSI range is 40-65, so obviously, you pump until you get into that range and where you are comfortable. Use the SmartGauge to check in intervals, and if it's higher that you would like, use the yellow button on the side to release air.

Now, the frustrating part is taking the reading, but only at first. Then you realize how great and simple this is once it clicks in your head. There is an unexplainable "aha" moment after using it a few times. After you curse and scream "5 PSI, this is BS!" and then "12 PSI, WT..", you then get the position that is comfortable for you, and you get a perfect reading, with no air loss. For me, I found putting my thumb on the top grey part and put directly on the valve, it beeps in one second, and I get the perfect reading. You of course doubt the reading, do it 5 more times after resetting it, and realize it is the same number each time. You then think it's broken, go to the next tire, and see that it's a different number. And then return to the other tire, to see that the number is back to what it said before. In other words, that's exactly what I did, not trusting this thing was working at all, and about to send it back.

The short story is that you need patience, and after a few readings, you will feel confident it's telling the truth. It's well made, sturdy, and the head of the unit rotates to get a comfortable angle in any position and visibly see the screen. But you don't really need to watch the screen. Just put the thing on the valve for one second, beep, take it off and read the number. Simple.

I have found myself buying a heck of a lot of Topeak products, and happy with all. The Topeak Explorer Bike Rack is what started it with me. The easy ingenious click on bags, baskets and accessories are top notch. I have no idea why I doubted this SmartGauge.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Accurate but difficult to use, March 14, 2011
By Stonehouse

The gauge has very accurate reading, but if you are planning on using it for your bicycle, you may want to consider a different option. It took me a long time to figure out a way to not deflate my tire by over 20lbs before securing a good reading. Still, half the time I release too much air and have to add more air. It's really finicky and if I had to chose again, I would invest more money in a good pump that has an accurate gauge.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Technique required .., February 3, 2012
By Gregory Brylski (Rapid City, SD United States)
This review is for the use of the D2 on presta valves. I have purchased the gauge and have substantial experience in repairing and inflating bicycle tires both in the shop and on the road. I have to agree with the reviewer that says the gauge is better at deflating tires than checking tire pressure. The problem is the center button that that depresses the valve pin has too much tension. When the gauge is pressed onto the valve air is released 'before' the gauge can seal against the outer valve outer surface. When the gauge is removed after checking pressure, air pressure is lost (1.5-psi specified by the mfr)because the valve pin remains depressed after the gauge seal against the valve is broken. This appears to be a dual design flaw, a) the valve pin should not depress until after the gauge is sealed on the valve. Or alternative, the gauge should not have tension to depress the valve pin until after the gauge is sealed against the valve. I watched the youtube video on the use of the gauge and read the other reviews - they are correct that the gauge can be used to accurately and reliably measure pressure 'if the proper technique is used'. However, in my opinion and experience on long bicycle tours, one normally wants to just measure tire pressure with the minimum of hassle - especially if it's raining or one is really tired and it 100 degF outside. This is not the guage for this type of application. I gave the product a 2-star review because the primary functionality of the design appears to be flawed and the ergonomics are poor.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Neat little gauge, August 15, 2011
By Dustin D (Austin, TX United States)
This gauge is pretty nifty. The swivel head and ability to save the reading keeps you from having to crouch down on the ground. The bleed feature is nice for releasing larger volumes of air, but I mainly perform repeat readings and bleed off 1 psi at a time to fine tune my tire pressure.

If I had to pick a negative thing, it would be that if you aren't very careful when placing the gauge on the valve, you get a slight leak in the seal and it can give a false reading. Obviously, the solution is to take your time and pay attention. And really, this is more of a problem with presta valves. Presta seems to be a tough valve to make a good gauge for.

Other than that, the gauge seems very well made. The screen is large and easy to read. The audible beeps are loud and easy to recognize.

Update: After some regular usage the rubber seal that fits around the valve developed a tear and the gauge was no longer functional. I mailed it off to Topeak with a description of the problem and I had a replacement gauge in a few days. Customer service doesn't get any better than that folks. The new gauge has been perfect, and in fact, the part above where I say you have to be careful seating the valve no longer holds true. I have no problem forming a seal now, which leads me to believe that the other one was torn from the start and I just didn't know it until it became more apparent. At this time I will keep the 5 star rating despite this issue because I feel that a single defective unit is not an adequate representation of a product.

Update: It's been a few months and the replacement unit is still going strong. I have no changes to add to my original opinion of the product. It has been great.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well if you know how to use it, May 26, 2011

You do lose about 1-2 PSI every time you put it on the valve but I will over inflate me tires and let air out as needed.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor design, February 16, 2012
By Riderdon
Poorly designed tool that is tricky & difficult to get accurate readings with. Unless the user has good coordination and fast hands, the tire valve core gets depressed BEFORE the gage seal contacts the valve stem, causing loss of an unknown amount of pressure before the reading is taken.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good tool works great!!, September 17, 2011
By challett57
This arrived on time and works as advertised... it is accurate and easy to use. I use this after inflating my 700cx38c tires with my Topeak JoeBlow floor pump and it measures to the T every time. I think that you have to leave it on the valve a second or 2 after the beep notifies you of the reading... but this baby is easy and I like the size and feel in my hand. Good tool, I'd buy it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The Perfect Gauge, October 17, 2011
By Kevin Black (Los Angeles, CA)
After reading some of the reviews for this device that were mostly positive, I decided to check it out. I have Presta valves on my bike and I'm a little skeptical with pumps, pressure gauges, and anything to do with those little nobs. I know what its like to deflate your tires when trying to inflate them. All I can about this little gauge is that it works great. Sure, you have to be firm and positive in applying it to the valve, but it gives a fast, accurate reading with virtually no air loss if used correctly. Its also compact enough to fit in my seat bag with my tube, tire tools, patch kit and all-purpose tool. I also like that the head rotates so you can see the pressure reading no matter what the angle. No more fears of blowing up my tire at the service station because of too much pressure. Well-built, compact, lightweight. I recommend this little unit highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent precise tool., November 5, 2011
By Alexei Karam
Initially faced a small problem installing the battery, had to fiddle and bend the battery contacts a bit to get it work. Didn't like how the battery compartment is designed. Once I got it working I loved it, it is very fast and precise and the amount of air lost with every measurement is negligible. I got this one for my bike but am going to order another one for my car!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  very easy to use, January 25, 2012
By Wes Edens (Glendale, AZ United States)
I was surprised how easy this is to use on Presta valves. It showed me how far off the gauge on my floor pump was, too. The manual says there is a loss of 1 to 1.5 lbs of pressure that occurs during measurement, but it's a far cry from the tremendous loss I was getting from my previous gauge. Just got it today, so I can't speculate too much, but it seems very solid.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, except for battery chamber, January 24, 2012
By John H
I have been looking a long time for an accurate prseeure gauge for Presta that does not lose air while checking. This is the best I have found so far. It does take a little practice. Once you figure out how to place it and push it on, it works well. I lose exactly one lb of pressure with each check. I don't think you can find a gauge that does better than that. Line it up and push it straight on quickly (but not too much force...just enough).

Now for the problem... I was prepared for a problem with the battery after reading other reviews before I bought this. When I opened the package and installed the battery, nothing worked (blank screen). I tried a brand new battery. Still nothing. I was ready to send the unit back! The original battery was fine. I had read a review that had said to remove the inspection sticker that is inside the battery compartment. So, I did and while I was experimenting with the battery again I heard a beep. I noticed that I could move the battery around and hold it in place (without the cover) to get a readout on the screen. So, I cut a small piece of rubber from an old bike tire inner tube and placed it directly on top of the battery (between the battery and the battery cover). I then screwed the battery cover on and everything worked fine. I have not had a quality control issue with Topeak before. Other than this, the unit seems well built and accurate. If it were not for the battery problem, I would have given it five stars.

I have a Lezyne alloy drive floor pump with built-in gauge (another excellent product I got through Amazon). The pressure readout is exactly the same on the floor pump and on the Topeak. Since I am pretty sure the pump is excellent quality, this leads me to believe that the Topeak gauge is accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  About TIME!, January 3, 2012
By John Howard
I've been looking for a nice little gauge to use to check my bike tires with Presta valves. I was tired of hooking it up to my air pump to check the pressure. This thing works exactly as shown in the video. No leak, just a nice pressure reading, and quick. THANKS!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Defective Inspection Sticker Placement Causes Battery Contact Problems, November 7, 2011
By Blk02
The gauge is small, light weight, and the screen is very large compared to competitive products. The gauge was accurate to within 1 psi of my very old Accutire digital gauge which isnt saying much, but for having a range of 0-250psi an accuracy of 1 psi is good. Several days after receiving the gauge it started beeping randomly and displaying odd characters. This issue only seemed to happened when moving the gauge so I thought it must have something to do with the battery connection (when shaking the gauge you could hear a small rattle which was the battery moving around inside its compartment). I opened the battery compartment and noticed that the inspection sticker was overlapping the edge of the battery craddle and the sticker was also tucked under the bottom metal contact so I removed the sticker and the battery stopped moving after the battery door was secured which stopped the erratic behavior. I was initially disappointed because I thought the unit was defective but the problem seems to stem from the inspection sticker placement of all things. Topeak take note of this because I have heard of people returning these for the exact same problem, which means they probably had the same sticker issue. Overall the gauge seems sturdy and well built. I have used it on both valve types and it works well. When used on schrader valves hardly any air is released. When used on presta valves the amount of air lost is based on how quickly and firmly you push the gauge onto the valve. If you are loosing a lot of air when using the gauge on a presta valve then you are fiddling with it too much just press down quickly wait for the beep and remove quickly and you will loose hardly any air. I could take about three consecutive readings on a presta valve before the pressure dropped 1 psi.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Expensive, but works well., May 14, 2012
By DB BluBlock Productions (Maryland, US)
I dig this thing. I was really debating purchasing this gauge after reading how many people apparently struggle to get an accurate reading. As everybody else is saying, it took 5 minutes of playing with it at first to figure out exactly how to use it.. then I instantly fell in love with this thing. It is VERY accurate despite what others may say. I tore through some trails for the last week and beat this thing to a pulp almost expecting it to break or fail.. it didn't. I only use Shrader valves, so I haven't had a chance to test it on Presta valves yet. I like how the head swivels so I can see the large reading from any convenient position. It beeps after taking impressively fast readings. I used it on both tires AND AA forks flawlessly, so I suppose this sucker is worth every penny. The only thing that I worry about with digital gauges is how long the battery will hold up, and whether or not it will survive the trails in pouring down rain. I suppose we shall see... but I figure the battery life won't be a problem since the auto-shutoff steps in pretty quickly. In fact some people seem to think it cuts off too quickly, but no complaint from me there. I also haven't had the problem with an abundance of air leaking while trying to check pressure. Like I said before... play with it a little before you head out and you will see that it requires a certain technique.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  What a fantastic device., May 7, 2012
By Max Power
OK I have bought quite a few air gauges in my time and always been dissapointed. This one is awesome. Solidly built it dosn't look like breaking any time soon, the head swivels and best feature you DONT need adaptors for the various types of valves you just flick a switch. It shipped with battery included and I immediately checked air pressure on a range of things from my car to my mountain bike and the digital reading pops up instantly and always gives a consistent reading (unlike my other gauges). Couldn't be happier.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great little gauge... Have used for Bike and car tires, May 5, 2012
By tkautoxer (CT)
This little guy works great. I have some bike tires with presta valves and the ability to switch back and forth so easily is very nice. The fact that the display can be rotated is a huge plus so you can see the pressures even when the valve is at a funny angle, and you can release pressure easily with the yellow button.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works perfect on a Presta valve for me, April 23, 2012
By Elduderino2412 (Baton Rouge)
Not sure what some people are having problems w/, but is ideal Presta gauge for me. Like any presta gauge/pump you need to be careful not to hit the stem when applying device. Very accurate reading. Now i just need a pump that works as well as this gauge, and i'll be in business.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Topeak D2 SmartGauge, March 31, 2012
By Capt Slow
I had the same initial experience as a number of other posters. That is, it doesn't work on Prestas as too much air is lost when pressing the gauge onto the valve. However, I watched the very helpful video provided by Fausto and was able, with a little practice, to get it to work satisfactorily with minimal air loss. Still looking for the "perfect" digital gauge.......

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good but not perfect, February 28, 2012
By Ghost81
I ordered this unit along with the AccuGage Tire Pressure Dial. This unit works with either Schrader/Presta valves. While using on my Mountain bike with Schrader vale it worked fine with no air loss when I pulled away. When I tried it on my road bike Presta valve it did allow air to leak out maybe 2LBS. The AccuGage Tire Pressure Dial did not work at all no matter how hard I pushed down so I returned that and will keep this unit.
