5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nothing "Standard" About It, December 9, 2010
By Old Hippie (St. Louis, MO.)
For a mere $18.68, I wasn't expecting a lock of such quality. Add a few more $$$ and get free shipping from Amazon.com. This lock actually compares to many higher priced OnGuard & Kryptonite locks. I bought this lock to use for my second (cheaper) bike. Had I known in advance - I may have bought two of them.

With a simple twist on the barrel, there's a cover for the key hole - protecting it from the weather, should a storm come up. The 10mm x 4ft flexible coated steel cable is thick enough so that it would take some serious bolt cutters to get through. There's even a user's guide with various lock strategies. As of this writing (12-09-2010) there's only two left in stock. Get yours now.

The only drawback I can see is there's no guarantee against theft as with some OnGuard & Kryptonite locks. Last thought...I live in what has to be called a high crime area. Leave a bicycle unlocked & walk away - it'll be gone in 30 seconds. Would I use this lock if I didn't trust it?

Edit: I've now added a 3rd bike. And a 3rd Avenir Lock - the Avenir Standard U-Lock

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, but a bit bulky, May 23, 2011
By rpbarnhi
My girlfriend and I just got into riding. We both have standard road bikes, but I am 6'4 and she is 5'6. This lock fits fine on my bike since it has a large frame and does not interfere with my water bottle holder, however, on my g/f's bike, she must make the decision of whether she wants the water bottle holder or the lock. We keep the bikes inside, so like a previous poster said, we can just take the locks when we need them (b/c they are a bit heavy), but that just also implies that they are strong and durable. For $18-$20, you can not beat the price.

Like I said, the lock itself is great, but if you plan on mounting it on your bike and riding around with it all the time, I think it would work better with a larger framed bike that has more space (unless the lock is the only piece you have attached).

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lower quality than Bulldog & Kryptonite! Broke after 4 weeks!, September 29, 2011
By bibliophile (Orange County, CA United States)
I bought this based on a review that said that Avenir locks are similar quality to Bulldog locks because they are both manufactured by the same company. Sadly, they were wrong. This lock set was not bad, but I would say it is one or two notches below Bulldog/Kryptonite quality.

After using this lock almost daily for a month, the keys would no longer turn the locking mechanism. The keys and lock did not fit together in a way that allowed the lock to turn, which I suspect is due to the lower quality metal making up the lock & key. The metal felt much more flimsy and malleable on this Avenir lock than on my old Bulldog and Kryptonite locks (which have lasted years).

I should have anticipated this problem when I noticed early on: (1) how the key + lock did not slide together smoothly and (2) the metal on the key scratched up very easily and there was a lot of "give" to the key, when it met resistance with the lock when turning.

Conclusion: Pay a little more and get a Bulldog or Kryptonite lock.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Strong lock and cable, weak bike attachment, July 11, 2011
By Alex C Duncan
I bought this to attach on my GMC Denali roadbike.

The mount bracket successfully stretched around the Denali's wide seat tube (a relief). I bolted it tight so that it doesn't budge or rotate, but the mount is still partially opened, exposing some of the bolts (like a clam or mussel). The bolts are long enough to make the set-up secure, but it does add some extra stress on the bolts and their contact with the plastic mount. That said, no problems with this so far.

After three weeks of using the lock, I've had two main problems:
1. The U-Lock has a rotatable piece that interfaces with the mount bracket (you can see it on the bottom right of the U on the Amzn picture). This is a neat device, allowing the rider to orient the lock as appropriate--either toward the down tube or the seat stays. But instead of just rotating on the axis, it also slides up and down. When it slides too far down, it prevents the lock mechanism from going far enough onto the U to lock. It's easily pushed in, but I find myself doing that extra step every time.

2. The mount bracket has a spring-loaded release--again, a neat device. Unfortunately, the extra component seems to need a longer screw to be securely attached--mine fell off on the first ride.

In sum, quality materials (tough metal, good plastic so far) but some engineering misfires. For the money, I'm keeping mine and making due, but I now ride with the u-lock in my bag.

As always, fast and effective shipping via Amzn Prime.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock, January 24, 2011
By Ben
The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star rating is the attachment that hold the lock to the bike. After the second time using it the lock became jammed in the attachment and I had to break it off of the bike before I could lock it up.

However, the lock itself is wonderful, easy to use, has the key mechanism in the center (no bic pen break ins possible), and the extra cable to run through the rear tire is great.

Would definitely recommend, especially for the price.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAD WITH A BIKE LOCK IN THE 20 SHORT YEARS OF MY LIFE, September 23, 2011
By J. Moon (Los Angeles, CA)
When I first started using the lock, the lock worked PERFECTLY. It was a little bit bulky but not heavier than the lock I had before. The lock opened smoothly and locked smoothly. I thought I'd be able to use this thing until I die or my bike get stolen for reasons not related to the lock.

Then the day came. First day of class, I'm ready to roll.
I try to open the lock: it won't open. The key goes into the port, but it doesn't turn.

So I think, "I must be using the wrong key," and look for the correct key. But that was the correct key.
I try opening for couple more minutes, despite all the suspicious, penetrating, and humiliating gazes I got from the other people in the apartment heading out to their classes. At the end, I take the bus to campus, late 30 minutes to my first class.

My bike hasn't seen any action since. And now I walk to campus everyday.
I have a perfectly running, f%^*ing $200 hybrid bike sitting in the parking of my apartment complex. And now I walk to campus everyday.

Tried to cut it with a saw--won't work. Try to smash it--won't work.
Now I'm waiting for some one to bring me a cutter and an electric saw.

For the people that say this lock's perfect: good for you.
As for me, I will never even look back at this lock or this company as long as I have breathes in my lungs and bloods in my veins.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good enough to keep the bike safe, May 18, 2011
By jschristian44
I was expecting something much smaller and lighter. This thing is pretty big and heavy. The cable is very durable and the lock as well. The mounting was very hard because it needs a standard sized bar, and all of mine except under the seat are either flat, too small, or curved and flat. I also have a saddle bag underneath my seat, but I got them both to fit without looking too horrible. I am only going to carry it on there though when I know I am going to stop some place. It really would weigh my bike down by a good 10 pounds. No where to keep the cable either, I tried my saddle bag, but it's too big even folded up. So while I wouldn't recommend getting this, I am sure it will keep my bike safe when I need to use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  High quality, January 10, 2011
By etodolac
This is really a nice lock for the price. Was looking for a normal size U-Lock because I had a hard time finding places to lock up with a mini U-lock. The keys are laser cut (unlike the ones pictured) and the locking mechanism feels smooth. The cable that the lock came with had black protectors instead of yellow(a plus for me).

This lock is pretty much the exact same as some onguard locks so I'm assuming it's a rebranded OG lock or they are just made in the same factory.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Couldn't open the lock after a month, October 4, 2011
By Trista
After using it for a little more than a month, I have to buy another lock because the lock cannot be opened.
The lock works fine at the beginning, but things started to get worse after a month. At first it was very difficult to turn the key. I had to try several times to get the magic point. Then I even cannot insert the key! I thought it was because I left the bike in the rain several time, and I tried to oil the lock, but it didn't work. Then I went back here and saw some similar problems.
This lock is cheap, only if you don't have to buy another one after a month.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  High quality; really big, June 26, 2011
By Caggs (South Carolina)
The components are of very high quality, and I was really pleased with the build. One word of caution: It's a really big u-lock which is great as far as giving you flexibility and options to lock up your bike. The downside is that it's heavy and it's hard to find a spot for it on your bike. It comes with a nice mounting bracket, but again, there was no where on my bike where I could mount the thing where the u-lock wouldn't interfere with my knees, thighs, waterbottle, etc. I still give the product 4 stars, as the quality is superb, and it's my fault for not measuring before ordering.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Seems nice, but I didn't get to try it!, August 19, 2011
By n2soccer21
I've taken this lock with me to and from work for the past 2 days. Fortunately I've been able to keep the bike inside, but that also means I have no idea how well the actual lock functions! This morning the lock broke off the mount and dropped on the street behind me. I read reviews that were upset that the bike mount is plastic and cracked while tightening, so I was careful about that. Instead, what broke was the connection from the bike mount to the lock, not the mount itself. If you plan on attaching your lock to your bike for transit, DO NOT BUY THIS LOCK. Returning it for something else. Great price, but (part of it) doesn't perform. I hope the lock works well, so I'll give it 2 stars with the assumption that the most important part works properly, but I can't, in good faith, give it more than 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock is AMAZING! It just doesn't stay put when I ride., November 16, 2011
By Brent Yao (HINSDALE, IL, US)
The lock is INCREDIBLE. Very durable. Just don't forget to WD-40 it so it won't rust. I use the lock daily in Chicago commuting from Union Station to and around UIC.

The only downside is the male end of the lock that goes into the holster slides and turns when I hit bumps. Somewhat annoying that I have to keep readjusting the lock into a straight position.

LOCK IS THE BEST LOCK I'VE OWNED.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  One little piece ruined the whole thing, June 27, 2011
By Doozah
After receiving the item I familiarized myself with the components. Everything seemed in place and strong enough for my uses. However, after trying to install the mounting clip which holds the U-lock onto the frame I encountered a problem. The clip requires you to tighten a screw until the clip is securely fastened to the frame. After several turns of my screwdriver the clip was still loose and easily swung from side to side. So I tightened some more. No amount of tightening seemed to keep it from swinging so I tightened it until the nut and bolt pinched right through the plastic rendering it useless. I will be returning this item.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Mounting Issues, October 21, 2011
By TC_
The lock itself looks sturdy enough, but the "mounting bracket" has a lot of issues. The bracket is designed to attach to the main frame of your bike. I bought this for my new commuter (a Schwinn Merge) and immediately discovered that my frame body is too big for the bracket to attach to, and even if it could, the frame is too small to fit the u-lock (which is kind of big) into any convenient position. What's more, the piece on the lock that attaches to the bracket can't be tightened all the way, meaning the u tends to spin on the bracket itself. In other words, the mounting system was worthless on my model of bike, and I can't see it really being safe on any bike unless you can mount the u-lock from above (so gravity will tend to pull the lock towards center). I tried to attach the u lock to the bike just by itself, but it's so big there's really no realistic way for me to get it on there without slamming my knees or pedals into it while I ride.

In other words, only buy this if you have a large frame bike comprised of relatively thin parts. I don't see how this could work with anything else, though as I said, if you can get the mounting to work out, it does seem like it's a pretty sturdy lock. Either way, this is going back.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I still have my bike, October 18, 2011
By Howie (NY)
I've put around 50 miles on my bike since acquiring and installing these Lock. A good amount of riding I do is through trails to villages and towns. Not NYC though, I still wouldn't trust anything short of the kryptonite Fuggedaboutit bike lock there. The Good news : I still have my bike.

So the lock works pretty well (seems stronger than it actually is), although the key that unlocks it feels like it will break if you turn too hard.

As the other reviewers said - the holder is a bit chinsy. For the price, fantastic. If you live in an area where people can walk around with bolt cutters without being questioned : look elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not Secure, October 17, 2011
By Alex Robertson
I was very pleased with my lock and thought I was doing well by going the extra mile and getting the combination u-lock and cable.

Unfortunately I was wrong.

My bike was stolen when the perpetrator cut through the bar of the u-lock with a simple bolt cutter. They cut through with a clean cut in what appears to be the first try. Do not buy this lock if you plan to use it for securing your bike other than while out and about in public. The u-lock appears to be sturdy but its construction makes it easy for thieves to cut it with simple tools in a matter of minutes. Invest in a sturdier lock or move your bike to a more secure location.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Buyer BEWARE: Low Quality!, October 15, 2011
By Jamiella Ortiz
Despite the number of low reviews, I went ahead and bought this lock thinking that it may just be faulty and surely the company would have fixed it. Now after having used this lock for only 2 weeks, I can't imagine why there are so many high reviews, unless the reviewers just put their reviews up too early or some of them are "planted."

At first, everything was great. The key went in smoothly and I had no problems and I was very happy with this purchase.

I started having trouble turning the lock with the key after just TWO WEEKS. At first I just thought I wasn't inserting the key enough, but it's actually that the inside parts are cheaply made and started corroding after a short amount of time. Sometimes it wouldn't matter how far I had inserted the key, or if I did it partway... I had about 3 or 4 breath-holding moments where I wasn't sure the key was actually going to open the lock, and I had to turn so hard that I was afraid I might snap the key right off.

I didn't wait until the key stopped opening the lock as for some users here--I sent this right back.

Word of advice from my bike shop: It doesn't make sense to buy a $300+ bike, and NOT put in an extra $30-60 for a good lock. If you value your bike for that much, then value your lock.

Right after this, I went ahead and bought the "Streetwise" series of locks from Kryptonite (I haven't found it on Amazon, but I did buy it from my local bike shop). It was about $35, cheaper than the rest of the Kryptonite series but I was assured that the quality was just as good. So far it hasn't let me down.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Larger than expected., September 16, 2011
By Steve S
As a bicycle security device, this lock is more than adequate. I can secure the frame and both wheels without taking the bike apart. It's not that heavy and yet strong enough to do the job.

The problem is that it's too large. It comes with a bracket for attaching the u-lock to the frame, but even on my 60cm bike I don't have room for it. I'd have to remove either the water bottle cage or the seat bag if I wanted to attach it to the frame or seat post, respectively. The tiny manual suggests a few creative solutions (like attaching it to a fork), but none of them are going to be doable for a 20 or 30 mile ride given that the lock will rotate in the bracket with a little force. My only realistic alternative is to buy more stuff - either a handlebar bag or a rear rack.

This would be fine for a commuter who either has a short commute or already has panniers/wears a backpack/whatever, but I ride for exercise/sport and don't carry anything other than the aforementioned things in my seat bag.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty good; great price, September 13, 2011
By Gabe
As other reviewers mentioned, the plastic clip that attaches the lock to the bike frame fell apart after a couple of days. I put it together without one of the parts and it has held up okay since then. The lock itself seems pretty solid and is easy to open and close. I wish the cable were a little longer; I can't always get it through both wheels.

I live in a city of bike thieves and still have my bike, so I can't knock this lock too much!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Too large and heavy for many bikes, September 9, 2011
By username_5 (Midwest USA)
I should have listened to other reviewers who commented on the size and weight of this item. The U lock is simply massive. There is literally nowhere on my medium frame Trek to mount this and not have it interfere with something else. I do not have a bike bag large enough for the U lock. To use this lock I would have to wear a back pack and carry it in there. I have no doubt it's a strong lock, but I just do not see myself doing any bike trips with it. I think this product should be called the super heavy duty bike lock. Emphasis on super heavy(and bulky). Now, this would be fine to secure the bike onto the car bike rack to protect against theft and it would be fine if one were traveling by car and wanted to lock their bike outside overnight, but this is not a practical item for carrying on one's bike on a road trip.

For those wondering just how massive the ulock part is, it's 11.5"x7.5". The bars are around 1/2" thick. Drastic overkill for a lock to be on one's bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  It's tough!, August 27, 2011
By Monique Gray
I bought this to lock my bike up when I take it to the store. It's a really tough and heavy duty lock. It's a little too large for my bike though. It won't fit on my bike the way that it's supposed to so that I can take it on rides. I think it's because my bike is a female's bike. But it works so I use it to lock my bike up at home because it's so heavy duty. I live in a bad neighborhood and this thing makes me feel confidant that it won't get stolen from my patio. I plan on carrying this thing in my backpack to lock it up while on runs. It's a great lock. And, it's good that it's big because it fits around my tires and the frame. But, I wish it could fit on my bike...

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bike Lock Combo., August 24, 2011
By shrimphombre
This is a great deal on a U-lock and cable system. With these two combined, you can be confident that your bike isn't going anywhere. The U-lock comes with an attachment for the bike, and there is non lock on the cable part of the kit.

Pros: U-lock is strong and portable, works perfectly after 2 weeks use, doesn't get in the way of peddling, easy to attach to frame.

Cons: Cable is hard to wrap up between uses, key is somewhat bulky, frame clamp doesn't always hold U-lock perfectly in place.

All in all I would buy this again, and it is much more protection than the same money spent at wal-mart or target for a much lesser quality lock system.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  exactly what the bike doctor ordered, August 24, 2011
By sabinanners (Ca, USA)
Your bike like is arguably the most important part of your bike, it prevents theft! With a U lock and cable lock, it will be as much a deterrent as it is a safety precaution because of the dual combination of the two items. Just make sure you always lock your bike correctly and you can prevent most bike thieves from ever attempting to steal your bike.

My rule of thumb, make sure your bike is always locked up better than the one next to yours.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Beware: Not for some womens' bike frames, August 24, 2011
By Katie M.
I ride a simple Schwinn Gateway City bike with a women's style "drop down" frame. I was excited to receive this lock and cable, and was immediately impressed with the general quality and price. However, I was very disappointed that I will have to send this back. There is not a good place on the bike frame to attach the lock bracket without interfering with normal operation of the bike. This seems to be due frame style of my bike, and the large size of the lock. If you want to be able to ride with your lock secured to the included frame bracket, then I feel you are better off doing so with a more standard men's style straight bar frame. Just beware when ordering.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Mounting Bracket too Small, August 23, 2011
By Ilaksh
I bought this lock duo for my Schwinn Varsity 700cc. The bracket mount on the lock was too small for my bike just a word of caution find dimensions for the maximum this mount will fit, other than that the look and the cable seemed pretty well made. The lock is big and bulky as I believe any standard lock would be.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, August 23, 2011
By E. O. (New Jersey)
I bought this lock to secure my GMC Denali road bike. It is a solid lock that rivals the fancy Kryptonite locks in both size and strength. It comes with a U-Lock, bike chain, bike mount and two keys. The chain is supposed to secure the wheels of the bike, but in all seriousness, could be cut by a pair of bolt cutters. The lock is fairly heavy and solid.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A BIG ole lock!, August 15, 2011
By Amanda.C
First off if you're looking for a mini U lock then this baby isn't for you. The size and length of this lock accommodates any bike if you plan on parking it on a lamp post, a bike rack, or a parking meter pole- hence why it's so big. It seems sturdy and functional, but my only complaint is that the lock's connector seems to be loose on one side, and completely fine on the other it also rattles whenever I shake it but the bottom doesn't come off unless I unlock it. Hopefully I'm not making a mistake by trusting this will keep my Trike safe!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A good buy!, July 21, 2011
By sdg
This duo bike lock is very sturdy and should deter the opportunistic bicycle thief. I have 2 complaints though: one is that the cable is a tad bit short. Would have been nicer if it was 6ft instead of 4ft. My second complaint is that, for the U-lock, the device that is supposed to hold it onto the bike does not really have a release mechanism that works, plus, it is a bit too weak to really hold the U-lock which is quite a heavy thing. Overall, this is a good buy. But for those minor complaints, I would have rated this with 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Ulock and Cable lock review, July 18, 2011
By kale
Great two products you are looking at, a very strong u lock and rope. If you have a skinny road bike, you might want a shorter u lock but if you want to lock the bike with one wheel when this would be fine. i lock the frame without the wheel so its a little too big, my mistake though. Well built product

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better than expected, July 14, 2011
By Barataria
This lock is heavy and seems solid as a rock. The cable which comes with it is not a thick cable and will be used primarily to tie down accessories such as the bike seat and rack. Another 16mm cable has been purchased to actually secure my bike. The Avenir U-Lock looks as good as the New York U-lock we currently use on another bike. While we haven't had this lock long, I am happy with this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock!, June 23, 2011
By Shrey
This is a great bike lock for the price. It feels solid and the U-bar has a rubber coating to prevent lock related scratches. The U-bar is about 23cm long, which allows enough space between the bike and the object you are locking to. The keys are pretty solid too, unlike some other lock keys that easily bend/twist upon applying slightest pressure.
I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a strong bike lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  First lock in Ages, June 22, 2011
By B. Li
So right off the top, i haven't had a bike lock since i was in middle school and that is over 15 years ago. I actually still have that one. I received this in the mail and could instantly tell that these new locks are much better than what i have used before. gauging the solidness of the lock, this seems like a great lock, so far it has been. I feel like it is a good lock, however, i am no expert, but this price, there is no reason why i wouldn't recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for the price!, June 7, 2011
By Emily (IL , USA)
This lock is extremely heavy-duty and a good size, and the fact that it comes with a cable is fab. It doesn't stay in place as well as I'd like on my bike, but that's ok. I saw the same lock for $10 more at a sport's store. So glad I purchased it here!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great and cheap, May 16, 2011
By C. Loera (Anartica)
buy it if you want an affordable u-lock that's both durable and cheap
plus the extra cable makes locking the front wheel/ whole bike together nicely, deterring thieves much more than just having a u-lock

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, March 18, 2011
By Jimmy Joe
I noticed that prices fluctuate hourly, sometimes by a couple cents, or in this case a couple dollars. I only paid $18.99 for this with free shipping which was a screaming deal.

The lock itself is pretty much as described, the "U" part of the lock is of the thinner kind, definitely gets the job done.

My only gripe with this lock is the size. The manual shows about 5 different places you could mount this on your bike, I have a full size mountain bike, and there was hardly anywhere I could mount this thing. I ended up doing the top bar, but the lock takes up all the inside space, I had to remove my water bottle holder. My compromise was that I bring a backpack with me to hold things as well as my helmet when I go into stores, so I figured it would be easier to hold a water bottle in my backpack than this lock.

But to rate it as a lock, its great, comes with the extra cable to lock up your front wheel, and doesn't have a round key hole that can be picked easily. I've seen other U-locks and I just feel that it would take the same amount of effort to get through this lock as the more expensive ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, price fluctuations :(, May 13, 2011
By S. Yang
I love the lock and the cable duo. I ride this in a city area so I don't play games when it comes to keeping my bike safe. I thought it was a good deal compared to other similar locks from other brands. BUT, I bought this less than two weeks ago from Amazon for 22.99+tax=25.03. It hurts when you see a price change so much in such a short time. ~Sigh~

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A bit small, December 4, 2011
By cypher
This U-lock is a great option for a cheap kids bike lock.

The Lock: The keys are square with patterns cut into the shaft. The slot is in the middle of the front of the retainer, making it easy to access. This lock cannot be opened with a pen shaft, with a knife, or by hitting it kind of hard. It meets all of campus police's requirements at the University of Texas.

The Cable: A bit too short, with great effort I can wrap it through both tires and barely wrap the U-bar. It would be the perfect length for a child's bike.

The Carrier: The piece of plastic that the device is supposed to dock to is too small to wrap around my bike's frame. I forced it until it broke.

Overall, this is an excellent, well thought out product at a fantastic price. Some parts are better sized for a kids bike, but the functional parts work great. I carry it in my backpack.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, flimsy mounting bracket, November 14, 2011
By Clara Yuan
I'm very happy with the lock itself. It is quite heavy, giving me the impression of safety, and quite long, making it easy to attach to bike racks even when the racks are crowded and positioning your bike can be awkward. I have had no trouble at all with the key or the locking mechanism, but maybe that's because I always keep the lock covered except when I'm actively locking or unlocking my bike.

My only complaint about the product is the mounting bracket. It's made of a cheap, brittle plastic with low quality control. I've had two problems with the bracket: 1) one of the screws didn't fit into the bracket properly and consequently didn't actually bear any load, 2) when I went over a bump in the road, the mounting bracket simply sheared apart and is now completely useless.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very good lock, November 11, 2011
By Jordon R. Herzog (New Jersey, USA)
The lock seems to be quite sturdy, while as others have mentioned, the mounting mechanism leaves something to be desired. I had to remove the bottle holder and mount my pump way off to the side in order to just mount this lock in the center triangle of my road bike frame. Several of the pipes were not compatible with this mounting mechanism due to either thickness or in my case, a non-round tube on the rd bike. I did though figure it out and it's worked nicely since, less the water bottle.

I have to say, while the lock seems sturdy and robust, I have not taken a pair of cutters to it to check. It feels and looks legit. The stranded extra cable also seems heavy duty and strong, but again I have not tried to cut it. If anyone things any lock is unbreakable/cut-able, you are mistaken. If a thief wants your bike, they'll get it, no matter what. Bike locks are thief deterrents, not preventions. All you can do is be smart about it and do your best to prevent your bike as a target.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Almost perfect, October 24, 2011
By Marcos Kirsch (Austin, TX USA)
High quality lock, a good cable, and it comes with a spare key.
Unfortunately I could not attach the lock to my bike's frame, as it is too thick. That would be my only complain. But if the tubes on your bike's frame are thin, then by all means this will be great for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Like it - Until it's too late, January 29, 2012
By j-factor (San Francisco, CA USA)
I used to like this lock. How could I not at this price and apparent quality. Until yesterday, when I got to my bike and U-lock was bent 180 degrees - someone must have used a crow bar and twisted but ran off without finishing the job. My bike was fixed to the stand at this point but I was able to (a) twist off the top bar without using the key and (b) bend the U-lock apart to with my bare hands. I wonder how the return policy is at Amazon for this junk.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Spectacular Value!, January 6, 2012
By Jane (Central Texas)
What sets this apart from a lot of other lock sets is the price. Both are good locks with minor flaws that some of the other reviewers have mentioned, but at the price point it's really unbeatable.

We've had no problems with sizing or any defects and are very impressed with Avenir now! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Lock, Horrible Mount, January 1, 2012
By CrazyGuy
The lock is large and the key socket has a very well made twist-on cover to protect from the elements. The mounting bracket however was horrible. On my first trip with it it broke as I rode off a curb. It's made of very cheap plastic and I abandoned it altogether. Everything else was perfect.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Could be better, but worth it for the price!, September 27, 2011
By Pi
I've been using this lock for the past week for school and it's held up really well thus far. The only problem is that when I first started using it, the key was really hard to get into the lock, but luckily, after a while, it became easier; however, recently, it's been nearly impossible locking it. I have to turn the key really hard to get it to lock, sometimes to the point where it seems like the key would break. :( Would have given five stars if it didn't act up like this. :(

5.0 out of 5 stars.  exactly what the bike doctor ordered, August 24, 2011
By sabinanners
Your bike like is arguably the most important part of your bike, it prevents theft! With a U lock and cable lock, it will be as much a deterrent as it is a safety precaution because of the dual combination of the two items. Just make sure you always lock your bike correctly and you can prevent most bike thieves from ever attempting to steal your bike.

My rule of thumb, make sure your bike is always locked up better than the one next to yours.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for the money!, July 10, 2011
By General Specific (Boston, MA USA)
This lock is very solid and has a cover for the keyhole, which is nice. Some people complain it's bulky, but I think it's nothing to worry about - I've had similarly sized/weighted locks before. I think it is a very viable alternative to ridiculously priced Kryptonite locks. No technical problems within first week of use.
In summary, the pros are:
- Price! Unbelievable deal for a lock/cable combo
- Solid build
- Keyhole cover
- Comes with cable

The cons so far:

- Cable a bit short, but you know what you're getting there

- Mounting bracket looks a bit flimsy, but holds so far.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Broke after 2 weeks, January 6, 2012
By Brandon
The lock and chain itself seems to be of high quality, however, the piece to hold the lock to the frame of the bike broke within 2 weeks of installing it. After some jerry-rigging to get the lock to stay in place, I can no longer ride my bike longer than a mile without the lock dislodging and getting tangled in my gears and tires. Basically, if you're going to buy this lock to carry around in your own bag, then it's a bargain and go for it; but if you're looking for the whole package, this thing is cheap and keep on shopping.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  MEH - it is OK but not great..., December 5, 2011
By art chick (va, usa)
I'm not going to return this b/c it'd be too much of a pain to return it, plus I need to use the item now rather than wait for a new one. However, it has some cons:
1) No good instructions - wasn't sure how to lock bike up
2) It's heavy - seriously heavy
3) The do-dad that attaches the lock to my bike frame does not fit my bike

About #1, I tried unsuccessfuly to wrap the cable around both tires. Apparently I'm supposed to use the U-lock for the back tire and use the cable only for the front tire.

About #3, I have a simple (and heavy) rear-pedal ladies' frame bike. So the metal tubes that form my bike's frame are relatively wide in diameter, thus being too big for the do-dad. Also, the do-dad is cheaply made. It was awkward to slide the lock on and off the do-dad.

Actually, the whole lock seems kind of cheaply made to me... However, it is OK. I will still use it.

If I could, I would have rated this item 3.5 stars, not 4 stars. I rounded up to 4 stars because at least the key is easy to use and they give you a spare.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  lock is good but not holster, September 29, 2011
By mr marquetti (new york city)
hey, good bargain considering the price and quality, and speedy delivery. Consider this a substitute to the kryptonite if you can't afford it. The only knock on this product, is the holster, it's very flimsy, not sturdy at all - which gets annoying. Be prepare to carry a backpack around.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Unbeatable for this price range, August 7, 2011
By kingdavidbaker
You will not find a better lock in this price range. I searched everywhere and checked all the reviews and the Avenir Standark U-Lock and Cable Lock Duo has lived up to my expectations. For just under 20 bucks this is a fantastic deal. The U-Lock seems quite durable and scratch resistant (dropped it a few times lol). The lock itself on the U-Lock is small and recessed so it would be harder to pick/bump. The silver piece in the center also turns to cover/expose the lock so it is completely protected from the elements. The bracket mount works nicely and swivels to mount at any angle plus the quick release button is nice. The keys are quite sturdy tho they do have a fairly dumb large head for a smaller key. The cable is thick and would definitely be difficult to cut with bolt cutters however it is slightly short but thats because it is meant as a backup to the U-Lock. My cable came with black rubber instead of the yellow pictured which was a plus for me. In short....lock your frame and rear tire with the U-Lock and use the cable on the front tire and frame again and you shouldn't have to worry.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy, and an overall good value!, May 4, 2012
By Tally (Stuart, FL)
For less than $20, you can't beat this lock. I wanted something that was sturdy, had decent reviews, and wouldn't break the bank. I don't live in what is considered a high crime area, but I still wanted something that would work when I go down to Miami, etc. This lock more than cuts it. Now, if I was still living in NYC, I would invest in the $70+ Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit lock (as other reviewers have said). For me, I never leave my bike locked out somewhere overnite, and I lock my bike in fairly visible areas. I am confident that a thief would have to do more than a little work on the DL to get through this thing. You do what you can to protect your valuables, and I don't think that this lock is a bad investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Lousy mounting bracket, April 18, 2012
By El Topo Records (Tijuana, B.C.)
The product works great! It's solid, the cable is long enough to tie my bike to the bike rack (to prevent rattling) and the ULock looks solid. The only thing is that the mounting bracket is fragile, in that when I tried to remove it from my bike frame I accidentally break it. Just be careful with that and you'll be fine.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Clamp is worthless, April 12, 2012
By ib
For those of you looking for quick info...do not buy this lock if you plan on mounting it to your bike. There is a similar Kryptonite lock and cable duo for $10 more, you'll be much happier with that.

For those of you who want more details read on. I will start by saying that if you have no intention of mounting the lock to your bike then most of the major problems are eliminated and you are left with an average/low quality lock that would probably get the job done and for $20 its not bad. However, I can't stand a heavy lock in my bag or a loose one clanging around the frame so being able to mount it was my main concern. Here is where the quality nose dives.

First off, I am assuming there must be a range of assembly or hardware standards for the clamp because no one who received what I did would have given it more than 2 stars.

There are two main flaws. 1) The pre-assembled hardware (screw and nut in my case) used to attach the male end of the clamp to the lock is too long, meaning that when you attempt to plug the clamp in, the screw hits the female socket preventing it from fitting into the clamp. Perhaps when they assembled it they were missing a large spacer/washer or ran out of shorter screws. 2) The clamp socket that attaches to the bike (which comes with a rubber spacer) is only flexible enough to fit a range of frames about 4mm diameter difference. I tried it on 3 different bikes (9 total different frame tubes) and it only fit 1 of them in one configuration (down tube).

I was trying to buy a super cheap lock and that it was but I thought it would at least be usable. Who cares that much about to bother with a long post over a cheap bike lock I've just never been so amazed with such shoddy construction and lack of product testing. I thought I should at least warn others.

Because I was installing this lock on a girl's bicycle I installed it on the front fork. I lifted the front wheel off the ground and let it down and BAM the holder split in two cracked threw. The lock is heavy and appears strong, but the weight was more that the flimsy bracket could handle.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock/key breaks after 6 months, March 5, 2012
By jfolks
The key/locking mechanism will break!! Mine worked great for 6 months, then the key began having difficulty opening the lock. I assumed it was the key itself, so I started using the spare. It only took 2 weeks before key#2 stopped working properly. It gets to the point where the key cannot open the lock (my guess is the lock is no good, and also wears the key down to a nub). Thank god I stopped using this before I locked my bike to a rack FOREVER.

DO NOT BUY!!!
