5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock For The $$$, January 9, 2011
By Joseph Brown (St. Louis, MO.)
Seeing that I previously purchased the Avenir Standard U-Lock and Cable Lock Duo for a different bike - I bought this one for a third bike I now own. As stated in the previous review..."The only drawback I can see is there's no guarantee against theft as with some OnGuard & Kryptonite locks."

With a simple twist on the barrel or "rotating dust cover", it will protect the key hole from the weather, should a storm come up. I already had a spare cable, so no use for that this time. I HIGHLY suggest everyone visit Sheldon Brown's web site & search "Lock Strategy". A cable lock alone doesn't work.

As also stated in the previous review..."I live in what has to be called a high crime area. Leave a bicycle unlocked & walk away - it'll be gone in 30 seconds. Would I use this lock if I didn't trust it?"

Three bikes now. Think I'll stop. All 3 "shop quality" bikes - no discount store models.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  works so far, August 11, 2011
By SLPTeachNYC (New York)
Solid lock, a little thin, but when I went to a bike store the guy said it would do the job. I did purchase the on-guard wheel and seat lock from amazon (which was really easy to install) and I think that the effort of breaking the u-lock then being unable to unlock the wheels/seat without risking damage to the frame is enough of a deterrent to would-be-thieves to look elsewhere.
The only major drawback is the holder doesnt fit any of the bars of my mountain bike (gary fisher)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I don't like U-locks, but it seems to work well, September 12, 2011
By Anna
Usually I use a coiled cable lock, but I bought this U-lock for overnight since someone recently tried (unsuccessfully) to steal my bike. I think U-locks are kind of annoying, but this one seems to work well. I like that you can turn the plastic thing to keep out water, etc. from the locking mechanism. It only came with 2 keys; I'd like more than that since they don't seem super-strong. Oh, and I think the mounting mechanism was missing a screw when I bought it, but since I'm not mounting it on my bike, I didn't care.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Can't unlock it, February 4, 2011
By jay
I first got it and when I tried to unlock it the key wouldn't go through. I could tell it's sturdy but now it's just sitting there with the key halfway.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Powerful lock with some flaws, November 8, 2011
By Seth Abramson
The lock itself seems nice and strong. It does its job, but the little device it comes with that connects it to your bike is really really cheap and flimsy. Mine fell apart. Also, the lock itself doesn't shut snugly and therefore shakes and makes noise while riding. I might have gotten a different lock in hindsight.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Mount and Lock both broke in less than 60 days of use, October 12, 2011
By jim cooney (Cambridge, MA)
It was getting me by for a while, but I've since had the same problems as some other reviewers. First, after about five weeks the mount broke, so I've just had the lock dangling off my seat -- not the best way to ride.

This morning, I couldn't get the the key to turn for several minutes --- I finally got it after several minutes of gingerly twisting, twisting, twisting, but there's no way I'll use it to lock my bike now because I'm afraid I'll never be able to unlock it again.

I looked for the cheapest U-lock and I got what I paid for. It's crap.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for the price, September 13, 2011
By oneundead
I purchased this U-lock so that I can safely lock my bicycle whenever I have to take it to my college campus. I have never bought a bicycle lock before so at first I was unsure if this was the right lock for me but so far I am quite satisfied with my purchase.

Pros: The lock is easy to use and seems strong enough for general use in relatively safe places.

Semi-Con: The lock comes with an attachment that allows the lock to be clipped unto one of the bike bars when not in use, but because of the size of lock, it will not fit on all bikes.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for it's price, August 29, 2011
By Winglik
This U-lock is pretty nice for under $20, and it gets the job done. It's not compact but not heavy at all, it's bigger than normal size U-lock. But it also gives more room to lock on pole or bike stand.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Needs improvement, December 28, 2011
By C. Foulkrod
This is wouild be a great lock if it stayed water tight but the problem with it is that it holds the water from the rain so then it does not work freely after a while. I think if they improved it for water tightness then it would probably be a good lock.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Fickle lock, December 26, 2011
By LT
I bought this lock mainly for the price but it gets stuck often, especially if you lock your bike outside. I think it retains rainwater in the mechanism. Had to use WD40 to get it unstuck. I'm in the process of buying a higher-quality lock to avoid this problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Buy, December 10, 2011
By MITengineer (Cambridge, MA)
This U lock performs just as well as the expensive ones. You get bike security for less price. However, the mounting bracket doesn't fit quite right on my Schwinn bike for some reason. I had to shim it myself to get it to fit right. I'm happy with it overall.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great deal, December 4, 2011
By Lynne Rodriguez (Boston)
Works great-except the piece to clamp/hold it to the bike doesnt fit on a 24" womans bike if the seat is low ( thats the only place you can really attach it) Otherwise it functions well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, reliable, weather-resistant lock, December 1, 2011
By M. Eldridge
Having been frustrated by two kryptonite locks whose mechanisms became very obnoxious within a couple of weeks of use in Summer weather, I decided to try this slightly more expensive lock by Avenir. I have now been using it for 7 weeks of inclement Winter weather, and it still works perfectly. I didn't anticipate that I would use the key-hole cover, as I presumed it would be an extra inconvenience when applying/removing the lock, but I discovered that it is so nicely designed that it requires minimal extra effort; just a 90-degree rotation of the wrist as you let go of the lock. Overall I am very pleased with this lock, and would gladly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock is good, mount is junk, December 1, 2011
By kc
The U-Lock is easy to work with, and works well. The mounting mechanism, however, is junk. Mine came missing a screw, and the plastic snapped within 2 weeks of use.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Key stuck, February 2, 2012
By DYU
Pretty much became impossible to open now and it takes me minutes to wrestle with this junk every time I want to ride. I just wish my new lock will be delivered soon.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't buy this junk., January 24, 2012
By anonymous (CA USA)
I bought it on October 2011 and used it for 3 month by now and the key began to stuck. I had the same problem with Kryptonite U-locks but it lasted at least 3 years. The mount is weak and poorly designed. Use more money and buy better one, unless you want it for 3 months. Ah, at least it works for 3 months.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Construction and Safe from the Weather, January 14, 2012
By iverscuba
In past bike locks that I have owned, the key hole quickly rusted due to the lock's exposure to the elements. With this U-Lock's twisting key hole, it easily avoids this rusting problem. I have used it in rain, ice, and snow; and I have not seen any rusting yet.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  won't mount, October 12, 2011
By wahwahwah
The lock has worked well so far but the mounting mechanism doesn't work, It won't lock in and U-lock itself can always be easily pushed out of the mount, making it useless. I wouldn't buy this if the mounting capabilities are a plus for you. Otherwise, It seems alright.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, bad mount, October 7, 2011
By William Pham (Bedford, TX United States)
Mount broke off/w the lock when I was riding around. Almost didn't know and could've lost my lock entirely (was listening to music, didn't hear it drop), but retraced my steps and found it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Just as good as the more expensive ones, September 16, 2011
By T. S. Palmer (Washington, DC United States)
Replaced a Kryptonite that seemed to seize up and not let me turn the key. This one is clean, easy to use, and very sturdy. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Quite satisified. Large Lock - May not fit on crossbars, July 30, 2011
By Ken (Carson City, NV)
I specifically ordered this because of its large size and reasonable price. Could not mount on my seatpost or crossbars because of interference with water bottle. No problem as it hangs real nice on my rear luggage rack.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good lock, flimsy mount., March 28, 2012
By zak
The lock works fine, no problems there at all.

However, the mount to attach the lock to the bike is a bit flimsy. I find the lock swiveling around when i'm pedaling which can get in the way. If you have a rack i'd recommend attaching the lock to the rack, or if you ride with a bag or backpack, keep the lock int he backpack.

Another drawback is the key. It comes with two keys, but they both feel cheap and breakable. Its great that there is an extra, but that doesn't help if the first one broke inside of the lock.

Overall i recommend the lock, but buy a better mount for it if that's possible, or just keep it somewhere else when you ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good U-lock, February 29, 2012
By E. Dong
This is the first bike lock I've ever used. I bought this lock about seven months ago to secure my bike at school. It works. I use it several times a day and haven't had any problems. The mounting bracket did break after a few months, so I've just slung the lock around a handlebar while commuting. It's a bit inconvenient to have it swinging around and making noise when on bumpy roads, but it's venial. I like that I can cover the keyhole easily, though I've noticed that the metal isn't prone to rusting. I live not 300 meters from a beach and I haven't felt the need to cover the keyhole except during rainy weather.
If I needed another lock, I'd buy the same lock that comes with a cable: Avenir Standard U-Lock and Cable Lock Duo
