convenient, lightweight, but not great security, May 9, 2011

I bought one of these a year ago to lock up a cheap bike I got for commuting to work. I'm not an avid rider, and just wanted something cheap and to discourage thieves from taking my equally cheap bike. It was exposed to a harsh winter and though the combination mechanism became a little stiff it still worked. The documentation recommends you give it a bit of oil which I didn't do for maintenance.
It's convenient not to have a key and the cable is light-weight. The cheap velcro strap it comes with is helpful for keeping the cable wrapped while you ride. Also the mounting bracket and directions are a nice touch.
However, keep in mind, cables don't really provide security as the first day I brought my beat-up sub-$100 bike into NYC, the cable got cut and my bike was stolen after I went to the grocery store for about 30min. That said, I did buy another one of these since they're more convenient than a U-Lock in safer areas (though I did also buy an expensive Kryptonite U-Lock too this time for whenever I bring a bike to NYC).

Good Lock For Added Security, August 23, 2011
By ct.inva (Alexandria, VA)

When shopping for a bike lock, the advice I got from the bike shop I visited was "There is no such thing as a dependable bike lock." They can all be cut or otherwise circumvented. Use multiple layers of protection and/or keep your bike within eyeshot at all times. With that advice I chose a lock that would make my bike a little less attractive to a thief and not break the bank. For $13, this lock is sturdy, easily transportable and uses a combination rather than keys. To me, keys are just one more thing to have to keep track of. It comes with a mount but the lock can easily be wrapped around the seat stem to.

Had some issues getting it up and working; the knob was difficult to turn (for me at least) but its working great now with very smooth dials and the customer service was great. Product came quickly and the seller was helpful with the issues I was having :)

I had this lock on my bike, and it was stolen last night, April 19, 2012

If you've been sheltered from the ruthlessness of bike thieves, this is probably the lock that seems most convenient, you can wrap it around your bike and even 'secure' both wheels!
Unfortunately bike thieves can easily cut through this kind of lock. Newsflash for you (and I just found out) you will need a U lock if you want to really deter bike thieves from stealing your bike. This may be a good second lock to use WITH a more secure U-bar lock.

Looks like a monster, August 7, 2011

This lock had to go on my seat post. (It's the only round tube on my bike.) Fits nicely, looks like it will deter a thief with it's size. Nobody has tried to take the bike yet.

exactly as promised, August 6, 2011

Fits easily on the bike (and you have multiple choices of where you want it). Strong, well made and fine for me. Of course, no lock can hold up to a determined and well tooled thief; but, for a decent deterrent, it's fine.

Avenir COmbo Cable Lock, July 6, 2011

Overall, for the money, this is a good product. It comes with a bracket you can attach to your bike frame to carry the lock around. It is long enough to wrap around most things and protect your bike and it is fairly easy to set a new combination. The only problem I have is the bracket is much to small for my bike frame and hard to attach unless your bike is perfect size. That only means you would have to carry it in a backpack or some other way. Good product though, worth buying.

Froze up after 1 month, October 20, 2011
By KillaZap

I got this lock about a month ago and it just froze up on me. Put in my combo at least 30 times, tried lubing it, banging it around a bit, no avail. Had to cut the lock and bought a better one.

Really sturdy locks, January 18, 2012

Very pleased with our locks. If you are a family, you can set all the locks with the same combo so it doesn't matter if they get mixed up. Really well made and surprisingly light.

Good lock for the price!, February 25, 2012

Okay, so I wouldn't advocate that anyone use this or most any other lock to secure their bike overnight or for mostly outdoor storage, because any lock can be defeated by someone with enough determination, lack of decency, and bolt cutters. But for those coffee shop riders, casual errand runners, etc, it's a good lock. The 10mm cable is plenty thick, the lock is beefy, and the combo is easily changed to whatever you desire when the lock is open. It comes with a mounting bracket if you're inclined to mount it to the bike (has to mount to a circular tube only), so you have a plethora of options as to where to store it on your bike. For now I have it wrapped around my seatpost, as I only ride with it when I'm headed to get coffee or something. I lock mine and my girlfriend's bikes up with it, seems to do the job well.
And, as always, you can't beat Amazon Prime for getting it to you in 1 day (even though I selected 2 day shipping). Winner, again!

Great lock and easy to use, March 19, 2012
By Quicksilver2613 (Florida)

I have only had this lock for a short period of time but it is one of the best i have used. I have gone through several makes and models of locks working in the golf cart industry and this is the best yet. The dial is very easy to use, components fit very well and the lock seems very well built.
I recommend this over the all of the other locks on the market that i have used; Masterlock, Schlage & Kryptonite.

Difficult to pull apart, but otherwise seems good, March 18, 2012
By Dave in AZ (Phoenix, AZ)

This seems well made, and the mechanism to change the combination works pretty well. (Some other locks you can accidentally change the combo when it is open, but this one you have to rotate collar which would prevent accidental changes.)
The dials are a little stiff to turn, and it is a little difficult to pull the lock apart; It seems to get stuck and I have to wiggle it. I will just use graphite and it will probably wear in with use.
It comes with a hanger but I couldn't find a place to mount it on my bike so the round shape would work good around a seat post.

Bought two and happy so far., March 13, 2012
By J. Flood (New Jersey)

I bought these for two kids bikes and they seem up to the job. Sturdy enough and long enough to be flexible. I did shoot them up with some white lithium grease after reading a couple of the reviews where it "locked" up. No issues so far.
