5.0 out of 5 stars.  Performs Wonderfully and Looks Good Doing It--A True Feat of Engineering, July 12, 2010
By Gilgamesh (Middle Earth)
The Pearl iZUMi Men's Attack Cycling Shorts are fabulously comfortable. I bicycle 3 to 5 days a week to work on a mountain bike outfitted with slick road tires. The commute is about 8 miles each way, so not a major trip. However, in the sweltering hot weather here in New Jersey, it's very painful without them.

THIGHS
------------
I was worried about the small-looking legs when they first showed up. Even with my thick thighs, though, they fit like a glove. On the inside of each leg is a silicone leg gripper. I am pretty hirsute, so I expected to feel my hair being pulled about, but I didn't notice a thing. Amazing engineering.

WAIST
------------
I am 5'7", 155 pounds, with a 31"-32" waist. I bought medium-sized shorts, and they fit just right. Although I considered getting a bib, because I was concerned about sizing, I am glad I did not. Even if you have a bit of extra flesh around your mid-section (and who doesn't?), it has a drawstring, so it should not be uncomfortable.

FRONT
------------
The shorts have a very low profile front. I swim in the mornings with Speedos, and I would say these shorts fit a lot better and show much less. I am quite comfortable walking around in them.

INSIDE
------------
The padding is incredible. I don't feel a thing. I am sure if I rode for another hour or two I would notice something. No shorts are perfect. These are probably about as comfortable as you can get, though. Somehow, the pad always seems to be in the right place.

MOISTURE
------------
The shorts wick the moisture away pretty well while I am riding. I put some regular shorts over them after I got to work the first day I wore them, instead of changing into underwear, and that was a mistake. I basically sat around marinating in my sweat for a few hours. There certainly was some chafing on the way home! I guess these really are made for riding, and as long as they are allowed to breathe, you should be fine.

SUMMARY
------------
The shorts are not cheap, but they feel like a second skin, and perform wonderfully while you are riding. In my opinion, they are worth every penny. The cost was somewhat mitigated when I purchased them by the free shipping (with Amazon Prime) and free returns (roll over your size to see what is available). You could pay a little less for other models or other brands. Why would you, though? I cherish my chances to ride, and I figure it is worth it to protect my bum.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  very disappointed, March 24, 2011
By cliff3344
I just got these shorts and am very disappointed. I had a pair of attack shorts I got a few years ago and love them. They got threadbare in the back, so, I figured I'd like the new one. Note: I also have the Pearl Izumi pro shorts and like them. One problem with the new attack shorts is they don't stretch as well as the earlier version. I checked the tag and noticed they reduced the spandex % and increased the nylon %. Also, the leg grippers don't work very well, not nearly as well as the earlier model. The fabric also feels thin and cheap. I just rode 30 miles in them hoping I would like they way they actually work on the bike, but, nope. The padding (they changed that too, to some cheap foam stuff) doesn't work very well and after 20 miles i was getting sore. My old model of attack shorts had padding very similar to my pro shorts. Due to the leg grippers not gripping very well and the fabric not stretching very well the legs rode up about 3 inches exposing a big un tanned band. I kept pulling the shorts down but they kept riding up.

So, they made the material cheaper, the grippers cheaper, the padding cheaper and they definitely are a sub par pair of shorts. I need to send them back. Buyers beware.

Pearl Izumi, you must be more concerned about your profits than customer satisfaction. Definitely the last pair of these I'll buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice padding, sizes definitely run small, September 21, 2010
By cyberchuck (Athens, GA USA)
I was looking for well-padded shorts, and these definitely fit the bill. They have lots of padding in the right places, but not so much that the bulk gets in the way. I would have given these 5 stars if the sizing were correct, but as other reviewers have noted, they very definitely run small. Medium was supposed to fit waist size 32-34. All my 32" pants are a very loose fit, but these Medium shorts just barely fit. I would definitely advise going up a size from whatever you normally wear.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  My First Biking Shorts, February 7, 2011
By phycon (Los Angeles, CA USA)
Since these are my first biking shorts I have nothing to compare it with.
My first impressions: The spandex feels pretty sexy however the padding in the crouch feels like you're carrying a load in your Pampers. I guess it's something to get used to.
They are very comfortable to ride in and makes riding more pleasurable and will appreciate them on the longer rides.
What is bothersome is sometimes when I am up in the saddle, the top of the padding will hook on to the nose of the saddle. Another thing to get used to.

I bought these for about $50 with free shipping and they arrived within 3 days.
I would recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Essential for long bike rides, November 14, 2010
By R. Grossman (Atlantic City, NJ)
I took up bike riding last summer ahd have gradually worked my way up from one hour rides to 3 hour (40 mile) rides. In my opinion, if you're only going to be on the bike for an hour or less, don't bother with these. Just throw on a pair of shorts and head out. But if you get serious, any more than an hour on the saddle (at least for me) requires some extra padding. These shorts take care of that, are very comfortable, and hold up very well. I have two pair as they need to be hand washed and if you're riding every day and are working up a sweat you'll need to alternate.

Also, the fit on these is important. I bought my first pair at a local bike shop where I could try them on, and bought the second pair from Amazon. They want to be tight so they don't move around. THere's another version with a looser covering short, recommended if you don't want the spandex look...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  cycling shorts, August 30, 2010
By home shopper
My son rides 25-50 miles a day, and he asked for these shorts as a birthday gift. He said they were extremely comfortable, as a good pair of shorts can make a big difference in the ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  My butt don't hurt, January 12, 2011
By Rols
I'm an entry level road biker and I finally spend $75 on a pair of cycling shorts. My butt thanks me every time after a ride. The padding is great and they stay on fairly well. They will ride down a little bit if you tend to stand up for uphills. They have a draw string so that helps secure them. The quality of the material and stitch is pretty good. I recommend them.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Effective, August 18, 2010

It's a good deal. Not perfect, but then again I do 100-mile rides on an abominable saddle, so maybe it'll be better with a new saddle. But this is an effective product, glad I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Super value !!!, August 21, 2011
By lscf150
Pearl iZumi will never let you down ! I'm new to cycling so these are my second purchase of cycling shorts, my first and only other pair of shorts are Primal Wear,so those are what I have to compare with these, don't get me wrong I like my Primals very much but these Pearl iZumi Attack shorts are AWESOME, they are light, thin, strong, breathable, fit perfect, padding is of sufficient density of foam, and they feel great!! I was not sure of the quality of the "attack" catagory of shorts only because they are in the less expensive part of iZumi's line, but these are a GREAT value, and I will be purchasing more of these soon.
I recommend these to all cyclists! LIVE STRONG!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  can't beat this, August 14, 2011
By Seamus Silliman
What's important - They are comfortable and appear well made.

How do they fit? I'm 6'3", 175# and have a 32-33 inch waist. The large fits great. Sure I'd like a little bit longer leg on the pants but that's not a deal breaker.

What rider are they for? I ride about 100 miles per week (that's about three times a week) and have worn these on everything from 25 miles after work rides to 150 miles weekend fundraiser (support Bike MS!).

I've had them for 9 weeks now and I have no complaints. While I'm not sure they are worth the MSRP, They are definitely worth the $50 or so bucks I paid on Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great shorts for an excellent price, August 13, 2011
By L. Myers
These shorts cost from $70 to as much as $100 at the local shops; at 49.99, I was very pleased. Great padding, excellent fit and comfort. I would definitely buy another pair.

For those who don't know, or who are new to wearing padded bike shorts: these are meant to be worn without underwear... I rode off and on for several years with jockey shorts underneath bike shorts, and the chafing I suffered after long rides ceased to be an issue after I followed the advice from other riders to "lose the drawers".

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Beginning rider gear, June 21, 2011
By Se (Midwest)
New to road biking. These were better priced as purchased on amazon than at my local bike shop. They were adequate for a couple of 20 mile rides during the first week of having received them such that I purchased two more pair vs the other set of shorts that I picked up locally. There are more expensive shorts, as well as cheaper pairs, but this was a great purchase for me starting out. Decent padding, well made, no problems with seams and the legs held tight tight and did not ride up my leg. Happy with purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice cycling shorts, May 14, 2011
By Lawrence (Jacksonville, FL)
I have this and the Quest Cycling Short and the padding on this one seems to be a little better than the Quest one. However, it seems like this short is a little smaller (medium) than the Quest but not that bad. No need for the drawstring or at least to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Pleased With these Riding Shorts, May 12, 2011
By PLE
I ride bicycles for exercise, and I do not buy the fancy cycling outfits that make bikers look cool. I just want functional clothes. That said, as my bike rides have increased, my need for protection on my rear increased.

A year or so ago, I purchased the cheapest road cycling shorts I could find from Aero Tech Designs. Since they were the only pair I tried, I assumed they were normal. But, I would still get pinch sores (almost like hernias or hemorrhoids) and cuts in my groin area. So, I decided to look for something better.

I liked the reviews on these cycling shorts, and they were about $15 more than the Aero Tech Designs shorts I tried. I've now used these shorts for about two weeks. Since then, all of the sores and cuts have gone away. My riding is close to pain free now. I highly recommend these shorts for anyone looking for a comfortable ride at a decent price.

That aside, I still can't figure out why cycling clothes are made without the normal conveniences of other sports clothing. Like, is it so hard to have a back pocket on cycling shorts? No, you must buy a cycling jersey with a back pocket. And why not have a front pocket on the cycling jersey for an mp3 player? No, you have to have wires from behind you.

I just wear boxer shorts over my cycling shorts for my back pocket (keys/wallet) and a plain collar T-shirt with a pocket for my MP3. Again, for me it is function over style.

Edit: I ride 20 miles daily, and 40 miles each weekend day, weather permitting. These shorts keep me well protected at the 40 miles range.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great shorts, super comfortable, April 15, 2011
By Dang Phan (Pasadena, CA)
I went to the local REI and tried on quote a few bike shorts before committing to these pair. I tried on some no name brands but noticed that the cushions weren't really there. So it was narrowed down to the Pearl Attacks or Quests. I tried the Quests on first and they were pretty impressive... very comfortable with lots of support. But once I tried on the Attacks, there was no going back. Simply put, they just felt right. I tried to justify getting the Quests because they were less expensive, but in the end, the price difference was justified in the perfect fit of the Quests.

I am new to cycling and honestly any of these shorts will work fine, especially compared to using regular shorts (my butt still hasnt forgiven me for the trauma).

FYI, these shorts tend to run small, so make sure you go with the slightly larger size.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Thicker padding than the Tri- Short, April 5, 2011
By Porkee Peeg (Santa Cruz, California)
I prefer the 6.5" inseam of the Pearl Tri Short than the 9" inseam of the Attack. But, I prefer the thicker padding of the Attack, especially on the sit bone area. I wear a medium and find the waist lower on the Attack, just above the hip socket, where the Tri sits an inch higher. No biggie issues just points for you to consider. All-in-all, the Attack's are pretty good for the $50 buck Amazon price, retail is $75.
============================
10/30/2011 Update

The chamois on these were great for the first dozen or so washes then it has started to break down. I find sit bone harshness within 7 miles until numbness sets in which tells me the padding is deteriorating. I can no longer ride continuous for more than 15 miles then I must pullover and dismount so my butt gets it feeling back. Also, they now have a tendency to ride a tad bit lower at the waist after a few miles. They will reside in the garage to be used with my trainer not on the road. I have down rated these shorts to 3*'s. Bike clothing is such a rip off.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Do the Job, December 6, 2011
By N. J. Maglio (Milwaukee, WI USA)
With a road bike comes the need to wear biking shorts. These do the job. They're foam, so they can become a little uncomfortable after a while and absolutely MUST be washed between rides, else they become a little harsh. If you're reading this, you know what I mean. I've worn them for rides as long as 65 miles, no issues. Made it through a full season with rotation with a couple other pairs, and are still in pretty good shape.

By Free Heelin
These shorts are a wonderful value. Comfortable, non-restrictive, everything I was looking for in a bike short. I was concerned that the little rubber nubbins on the legs wouldn't do their job, they were so small and non-intrusive, but I have been proven wrong. These shorts are super comfortable!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product and great value!, December 29, 2011
By HJN (USA)
For the price point, these shorts can't be beat! I preferred these over the Elites because of the material and also the seams. These just felt more natural on me. Although the Elites have a thinner and more stretchable material, the material on these shorts felt more comfortable. The Elites also has seams that just felt uncomfortable to me like they run along the wrong areas that annoy me. This could very well be personal preference.

I am 5'11", 190lbs, 32 waist, with rather large thighs. The large fits me perfectly. The mediums were too snug where it made me a little uncomfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Comfy, November 29, 2011
By dude
Bought these shorts about 2 months ago. Very well padded. Comfortable. The material is a little thinner than I expected, but it does the job. Leg grippers work well. I usually ride for 60 minutes and I have no discomfort during or after the ride. Other shorts sometimes leave a tingling feeling in my groin area, but I feel pretty good after a ride in these shorts. Drawstring works as it should. I am 6'0'' and have a 36" to 38"" waist and I bought the XL which fit well. I've read some reviews where sizing was smaller than expected, but for me the fit is great. Not much more I can say - well worth the price, compared to other shorts I have worn.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very comfortable and light., August 17, 2011
By Digman (Delaware)
I am 5'9" tall, weigh 185lbs with a 36-37 inch waist so I had to purchase an extra large size(the large was much too tight). As a result the pant legs are a little bit too long but they do not ride up. The padding is a little thinner than I am used to but adequate. The only real problem I have with the pants is that they don't slide as easily on my saddle as my old Reebok gel pants slid. These pants can not be put in a dryer!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Alright, August 8, 2011
By Marcus Riley
While adequate they aren't great shorts, my girlfriends Danskins are much better, I may try an extra large in them as they are womens only.

BTW, before any of you weight/height inappropriate folks go saying they are too small, let everyone else know you aren't normally proportioned. I ordered and XXLarge and they are too loose. Thanks for sharing your less than candid info with everyone. I am 6'3", 215lbs, normal to average size, not a short, wide version.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does what it should, April 9, 2012
By Steve S
I bought these in Medium because the ones I have in Large are now too big (I'm 6'2", bought the Large when I was ~195 or 200lbs., now using the Medium at 176lbs.). I have a slight problem with the sizing, but it might just be me: the Large size fits my legs but is too big in the butt. The Medium fits in the butt but is pretty tight in the legs and crotch. I have big thighs compared to the average person but not the average cyclist, so I'm surprised they're so tight. Maybe I'm just between sizes. The Large is still more comfortable, but the looseness in the back makes it a little difficult to get the pad in the right place on the seat. Definitely more comfortable though as long as I'm not moving around in the saddle.

Overall it's a good product at a great price. Between the fabric and the dry Denver air, my front half always stays dry. I still get wet in the back but there's not much air flow back there (I sit fairly upright on a hybrid) so I don't think I could expect any different.

Pearl iZUMi Men's Attack Cycling Short,Black,X-Large They run true to size I ordered a size larger based on other reviews and found that was not the case, I have a 36in waist a large would have been better. The chamois is very comfortable I would compare it to some pro level shorts, not to crazy about the draw string waist but getting used to it.All in all good shorts for the price First ride was 2hours with no discomfort or rubbing.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good as a first pair of bike shorts..., May 13, 2012

I was looking into bike shorts to wear on my MTB as I needed something that doesn't snag, as regular shorts do when moving around the saddle during steep descents/ascents. After much research, I settled on these Attack shorts. They are very comfortable, nice quality, and even have a draw string for those with a little extra around the equator. The silicone grips around the leg hem work well, and they don't ride up, even after a very rigorous workout on the trails. The label hasn't even begun peeling after two months @ 3 rides/week. The chamois is good for the price, but not as thick as my subsequently purchased Sugoi RS's, so I tend to wear these on shorter training rides while I wear the Sugoi's for the long rides.

My one complaint about these shorts is that they stretch out around the buttock, and then stay that way, giving you a little bit of a "diaper butt" when standing/walking. My Sugoi's haven't done that at all (they are also MUCH more expensive!).

A good first short, but like most things, you get what you pay for.

I LOVE these cyclist shorts. They are well made and very comfortable during my short and long treks. I just broke them in on a 17 and 32 mile bike ride. I highly recommend these shorts especially when they are on sale otherwise they can be a little pricey but definately worth it.

These shorts are great. They are very comfortable and give you the padding you need to protect your bum on long rides.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for light riding, April 27, 2012

I have been using them for rides of about 12 miles on a hybrid bike. I am 58 and just started training for a triathlon, part of which is a 12 mile bike ride. I have a slight build and the padding has been fine for me. No soreness or chaffing.

I have always had good luck with pearl izumi products and this is no exception. Comfortable even on longer rides
