Huge Improvement, March 9, 2010
By T. Davis
|
|
These are snug & compressive. Much more than a similar cheaper brand (Performance)I compared. The pad is superb (13mm thick).
I was losing interest in my rides due to my sore arse by the end. After my first ride in these it's as if I hadn't even gone.
Considering I was wearing 4 yr old Fox shorts with a very thin almost non existent pad, this was luxury.
Nice compression around your thighs & the 9" inseam means they don't "ride" up your leg, they stay right above your knees. SWEET

Sadly, I think Pearl Izumi has jumped the shark, November 17, 2010
By P. Proffitt (SF Bay Area)

|
I've been riding mtb and road bikes for 15 years and have almost exclusively done it all while wearing PI shorts.
As with my other review on their gloves, I think PI has lost touch with the serious recreational rider.
This pair of shorts was yet another let down. The chamois and the material are both good, but the "enhancements" ie fixing what isn't broken so it looks like you're evolving your product line, are very lame. They added an inch or so of thin material
at the very bottom of the leg which is held in place by a huge not very elastic seam (sometimes feels more like a rope)
The reason for this is to add "leg grippers". Sorry, but real elastic seams on the legs grip much better and do so without
a rope cutting off my circulation above the knee. And just so my crotch isn't jealous of my lower legs, they put a seam right up the middle of the shorts. Not very comfortable but for the guy who likes to rock a Manel Toe(male camel toe) at the coffee shop, these are for you. I'll use these as training shorts for rain rides and such this winter, but come the 2011 riding season I guess I'll have to look for a new brand to be my default. Unless I see a shift back to what actually works for cyclists, Pearl has lost me, which sucks because I really did like their stuff up until about 2 yrs ago. I hope they get back on track but I'm ready to move on.

Not the Pearl Izumi I'm used to..., July 1, 2010
By t3man (San Francisco, CA USA)

I just bought these shorts and much like the knee warmers I also recently purchased, they just don't fit like the old Pearl Izumi stuff I've bought over the years. When you first put them on they fit great, nice and long in the legs. But being I don't have sprinters thighs within the first few miles the legs are halfway up my thigh. The cuff piece at the bottom with the supposed sticky spots on it to hold to your leg are actually looser than the rest of the leg. So they creep up your leg real quick. Much like the knee warmers that get so baggy during a ride that I have to stop to pull them up as well. The old PI knee warmers and shorts used to fit great and nice and snug. These new ones with all the stitching look good but don't hold their shape.

Not the old PI Fit, January 19, 2011
By BobbyHead
|
|
Disclaimer: This is my first pair of PI Elite shorts. I've primarily used the (less expensive) "Attack" shorts.
I agree with some of the other reviews that talk about the "fit" of other PI shorts verses these. I've ridden with PI shorts exclusively since 2004. The fit is just doesn't seem right for me and some of the new features just don't cut it.
The good: Really great padding (felt like I was elevated a few inches on the seat too); sorry, that's it.
The not so good: The fit in the waist seems especially wrong. Slightly low and to tight (I'm a relatively skinny guy - 32") and the mediums were way tight; They've added a draw string in the waist - Wha?; If you like extreme "compression" on your privates, you may like these; "Mamel Toe", as a previous review mentioned, was the first thing my wife mention when she saw me in them. I really don't need that. I would have prefered "you look fat".
Mine are new (only two rides) so maybe they'll loosen up (or maybe I'll be asking for an exchange). Or maybe I'll just revert back to the "Attack" style and save a few bucks.

Nice shorts, January 23, 2011
By IanExplosion

I rode for 3 hours today and felt zero discomfort from these shorts. The padding is definitely adequate. I paid $70 dollars for them and when they got here they had a tag that said $100; I thought that was cool. I have a 33/34 inch waste and the large size fits me really well. They have elastic and some non-skid rubber on the legs that keeps them from riding up. The stitching on the seams is more than adequate; I'm sure they won't come apart for a long, long time. There's a drawstring on the waist that I've never felt a need to use. In conclusion, super happy with my purchase of Pearl iZUMi Elite cycling shorts.

Nice nylon shorts, August 25, 2010
By NoNonsense
|
|
I really enjoy these shorts - I've got two pair being used in regular rotation. (Even in California's low humidity, it takes a little more than a day for the chamois/pad to air-dry completely, so I usually have one pair drying while I ride in the other.)
The main benefit for me with these shorts is the material: it's mainly nylon, not polyester. I'm sensitive to polyester, and many less expensive shorts (including Peal Izumi's) are 100% poly or a poly blend. For those who need to know, the materials list for the PRO shorts are:
69% Nylon (all the black panels appear to be nylon)
16% Polyester (the orange surface of the chamois pad feels like poly)
15% Lycra
This probably won't matter to most riders, but it makes a difference if you have super sensitive skin or an allergy to polyester. (Also note that some of Pearl Izumi's P.R.O. Jerseys are mostly nylon - which is a real exception in a world of 100% poly jerseys. Lots of high-end nylon shorts around, but not many Jerseys...)
And no matter what they're made of, these shorts are snug, comfortable, and ride well. I haven't had any problems with them riding up or getting baggy during rides.

GREAT for Cyclists!, December 24, 2010
By Queensgal

I resently purchased this item for my husband as a gift. He is an avid cyclist and must have comfort to be able to get the distance he wants. He raves about this product and told me he has tremendous comfort and no more chafting. The padding is perfect. WE highly recommend this product! I am going back and purchasing another pair.

Fantastic, July 3, 2011
By PH

The shorts offer a noticeable amount of compression. They look and feel great. The leg grippers are comfy and not too tight. The chamois performs like a champ on 50 mile rides, Very comfortable with no unusual discomfort. These Elite shorts are noticeably better quality and much more comfortable than cheaper Pearl Izumi Quest shorts. The only con is the camel toe look caused by a seam running right down the crotch.

Great shorts, October 15, 2011

I had a pair of Pearl Izumi Pros which are a little more expensive, so I was concerned that these would fall short. But they are every bit as good in terms of padding, fit and quality. Great value for serious cycling shorts.

Durable and comfortable, September 3, 2011
By Maneesh Khare (Los Angeles, CA United States)
|
|
These were my first cycling shorts and I'm glad I did not go cheap. They are true to size, very comfortable and very durable. I wash them after every ride and the quality is still the same after 4 months of aggressive use and washing. The chamois is just the right size and padding for long rides. The silicon at the edge of the shorts does a great job sticking them to your skin so they don't 'run up' and collect at any point. Truly a great product deserving 5 stars.

You CAN tell a difference, August 15, 2011
By x

The most expensive cycling shorts I have ever purchased. Do I notice a difference? Yes. Are they aboslutely necessary? No. They are really nice shorts though, and if you ahve the $$ to spend - I'd go for it. Can't speak to the durability of them yet - have had them for about 2 months and seem to be good as new.
You can tell the difference in quality, but if you are budget conscience, you can get by with a less expensive pair of shorts.

Fantastic shorts, July 6, 2010
By CC
|
|
I bought this cycling shorts after looking at several reviews. I like it a lot. It is very fitting, cooling and has good padding. However, the first time I cycle for 45km wearing the shorts(after not cycling for a long while), my bum still hurt. I replaced the saddle for my bike after the session and bum does not hurt any more. Bottom line is ... This shorts provide good cushioning but you still need a good saddle to go with it. :)

Good shorts, February 1, 2012
By Chad Bieber (Milford, de)
|
|
2 trainer rides in and I find these shorts entirely acceptable. They're a bit thinner material than I would prefer (I'd call them medium weight, I prefer a heavy weight material), but I'm not significantly bothered by that. The pad feels a bit big (diaperish) when not on a bike, but works exactly as it should when on the bike. I'm a solid medium in a wide variety of clothings, and I found these to fit well. They're slightly snug, but I prefer my bike shorts snug, as opposed to baggy or wrinkly. I'm also slightly chubby right now (Go-Go-Gadget-Winter-10-lbs).
There are two things I would change about them, if I could. The drawstring is a bit short (although it came tied in little slipknots that gave me a good idea for sending them through the wash without losing an end). My old (old) Canari shorts have a foot or so of excess string on both ends, these have less than 6 inches. I prefer the foot. Additionally, the leg gripper is 'dashed', rather than continuous. I don't feel this, but I can see it. Perhaps it is my slight OCD streak showing, but the 'dashed' look of the leg gripper I find odd.
Overall, I find these shorts to work perfectly well for me up to 90 minutes in the saddle. I worry about the drawstring losing an end in the wash, but tying the ends in a slipknot will probably prevent that. I will update after some longer rides.

Great quality product but..., December 29, 2011
By HJN (USA)
|
|
These shorts are of great quality and material. However, I have tried them and have preferred to put on my Attack shorts.
The materials on these are lighter, thinner, and stretchier but for some reason, the Attack shorts' materials and seams felt more natural and more comfortable. It's probably personal preference!
I am 5'11", 190lbs, 32 waist, with rather large thighs. The large fits me perfectly. The mediums were too snug where it made me a little uncomfortable.

I am a recreational rider, 3x per week, with an occasional long ride of 50 to 100 miles. Purchased these shorts and one week later wore them for a 100 miler with no problems. I tried the blue pad shorts last year and was not too pleased with them. These seem to be very good.

Good if not the best but for no more than 3000 miles of riding, September 19, 2011
By Artewa (Rocklin, CA)
|
|
I was impressed with these shorts for first 8 months (approximately 3000 miles of riding). They broke in after few rides after being too compressed at first, became comfortable, I thought these were the best shorts ever invented. Thought they would last for years (expensive for a reason). Well, after mentioned period padding flattened a little, excess material around the edges bunched up/wrinkled causing unimaginable chaffing I have ever experience after 40 miles of riding (I was out of saddle for 1 week). Chamois cream on the next few rides did not help much, chamois worked on my skin like a sand paper and chaffing again. I returned them. I think these were not tested for durability long enough or simply not designed for long time of use. All other 2-3 star reviews are right on the money. I gave 4 stars only because of Lifetime Warranty provided by Pearl Izumi. They will refund your money, replace or repair at no cost to you.

Great shorts!, September 17, 2011
By M. Hooge (Connecticut)
|
|
I really like these shorts. I bought them to replace an old, less padded Pearl Izumi short. The padding is thick and allows me to ride much more comfortably and longer than I could with my previous shorts. The silicone strips on the end of the legs keep the shorts in place (they have never ridden up on me). The quality of the shorts is very good.
I like these so much, I am buying another pair for consecutive ride days!

I'm so pleased with these shorts I just bought a second pair. I've tried the lower-cost iZUMi shorts and I found them uncomfortable. However, these shorts fit great and are extremely comfortable, even on long rides (75+ miles).

An excellent choice at a great price, July 25, 2011
By Michael Scott (Scranton)

I really like my Pearl Izumi Elite Shorts. The padding is very comfortable and does a good job of wicking moisture. The stitching is well done so that it doesn't irratate my skin as cheaper shorts have. And I like that the stitching isn't black to give the shorts a look that is a little different.
This is a great price too. Every store sells them for $100. They shorts even show up with a $100 price tag on them. The price seems to flucuate a lot on amazon. It's always a good deal, but I've seen it change by as much as $15 over the course of a few days.

Good shorts, May 18, 2011
By Galileo Galilei (Woodranch, CA)
|
|
Definitely worth the money, comfort is great, chamois is very well constructed. The short stays in place, no ridding up on the legs or crotch. Compression is adequate. My only complaint is the stitching that runs up the center - it really shouldn't be there, the "camel toe" comments are right. But when riding, these do their job very well. Would recommend.

Uncomfortable, May 17, 2011
By Kev
|
|
Having read some of the reviews that referred to "mamel toe" or male camel toe, I thought that it they were only referring to appearances. What I found out is that the seam in the middle of the crotch is also very uncomfortable. The first time I tried them on, I walked a few steps and felt like someone was grabbing me - and not in a good way! Also, I wear a 32 or 33 in pants and the medium was definitely too tight. The sizing chart showed mediums as 32-34 inches. Not sure if that is a Pearl Izumi issue or an Amazon issue.
I have fairly thick quads, so no issue with the legs riding up, as some had said, but the leg grippers at the end are definitely much looser than the rest of the short and, hence don't seem to serve a purpose. On the positive side; the pad itself seemed like it had plenty of cushion.
Returned them for refund.

These shorts are a nice step up from the Canaris that I wore for a couple of years. Only have about 25 rides since I bought them about a month ago but so far, so good. Nice fit, nice feel, and good price from the seller. Time will tell if they deserve 5 stars.

Pearl iZUMi Men's Elite Cycling Short, March 7, 2012
By Neon's Dad (So California)

I purchased this to replace my 16 years old PI (yes 16 years) cycling short, this one not as comfortable as I expect the fabric kind of rough against my skin and I get kind of burning sensation, the design are nice, the grey color thread on black fabric make it stand out real sharp, also the PI logo get a good reflect when the light hit at certain angle. However I think they could have make it just an inch or two shorter , I'm 5'8" 153lbs I wear 32/32 jean, so I order this short side L/G the waist fix perfect but it's way too long, almost pass my knees
