In companion mode, R2-D2 responds to commands like "Go on patrol," "Light Beam," and "Play Message." Star Wars fans are sure to appreciate the accuracy of the messages, which are culled from famous missions he remembers. You can even ask R2 about friends including Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, Darth Vader, and Jabba the Hutt. He has a different reaction to each name based on his "feelings" for the characters. And if you hit R2 on the head, he'll make irritated beeping sounds and try to move away from you. As you get to know your droid, you'll realize that the noises and motions he makes correspond to his "mood." In game mode, R2 responds to more complicated commands. He'll act as a sentry to protect your important stuff, dance to cantina music, spin around, or play light tag. The third mode is the most complex. This command mode lets you give pointed directions that control R2's movements. Tell him to turn left and right or go forward whenever you want, or set a preprogrammed course for him to follow. While R2 responded to simple commands with no problems, we had difficulty getting him to respond reliably to more complex requests. We trust that, like with any voice-operated electronic system, over time it will get easier to produce a wider range of commands that R2 consistently responds to. Until then, his movie-accurate look, the way he responds to simple commands, and the convenient beverage holder make him a fun comrade. What's in the Box Droid body, two steering legs, projector piece, telescope piece with sensory array, and an operation manual.

Works so much better than I thought it would..., December 2, 2009
By J. Petersen (Columbus, Ohio)
|
|
After reading the description, I had fairly low hopes for it, but it was a great deal on one of the black friday deals, so I bit the bullet and purchased it. I received it quickly, and put on the pieces that were not initially attached. Those pieces seemed cheap compared to the rest of the well-built unit. I put the batteries in, and turned it on, and tried the list of voice commands. A lot of the time, R2 would beep and shake his head "No". It got very frustrating, so I turned it off and gave up.
This ended up being my fault. I read through the directions the next day (why would I do that initially) and found that I had not activated his moving mechanism - the red light on the front - so he could not move, and refused to do a lot of the commands.
Once that was figured out, R2 became a blast to play with. He understands most of the commands on the first try, with the trick being to pause between some of the words and wait for his acknowledgment with his "yes beep".
Being the geek that I am, I would highly recommend this toy for fans of star wars.

Kids and neigbors love it, December 3, 2009
By Dale (Hawaii)
|
|
This is the one the neighbor kids want to play with when they come over. They are fascinated by it. They really enjoy turning off the lights and letting the robot play light tag with them. I bought it from amazon last year and we've never had a problem with it. I am always afraid the kids will break it but Artoo keeps on plugging and he's still going a year later. It can take a little practice to get the voice commands, but one of my two year old son's first spoken words last year was "hey, Artoo!" Mine never runs into walls or anything. He even handles rough carpet and finds his way around furniture. We got a good deal from Amazon and it was one of the best toys we've had.

An excellent companion - more than just a toy, November 16, 2010
By danhunt99
|
|
Most of the other posts I have seen to date have been true in my experience as well. R2 has a personality that requires patience to learn, but once you get to know him, he is a lot of fun and makes an excellent companion. Getting to know him is many ways similiar to getting to know a new pet. One my favorite features is his "Room Guard" Mode, where he lights up and makes noise if his sensors detect an intruder. I let him guard my bedroom at night, and he does a fine job.
Only two downsides in my opinion - He takes 4 D size batteries and 4 AA size batteries that he can go through fairly quickly. I recommend rechargable batteries. Changing his batteries requires unscrewing a panel on his backside, which can be a bit tedious. If he could be recharged simply by plugging him into an adapter, that would be nice.
The other downside is that he may be easily damaged if small children pick him up and bang him around too much. The instruction manual explicitly warns to NOT let R2 fall down stairs or go outside. Still, in the hands of someone who knows how to be nice to their toys, he will be fine.

R2D2 - Enough personality to be charming (& some tips), January 30, 2011
By Michael L. Bowers (Seattle, WA USA)
|
|
All toy robots suffer from the problem that once you've experienced all their routines, interest often wanes quickly. R2D2 is no exception, however he has enough personality to stay fun even after you've seen his capabilities. Nice touches like turning his toward you to listen when he hears his name, and the emotion-conveying beeps leaving exact meaning to the imagination obfuscate his limited programming. Telling him, "behave yourself," then "time out," sends him away from you sulking to a dark corner of the room. It's pretty much the saddest thing I've ever seen a robot do and always makes me want to interact with him more to cheer him up! R2 requires patience, but is a charming companion for kids young and old. You will not regret getting him.
Here are a few under-mentioned tips for interacting with and fully enjoying this robot:
Hit him on the head to stop him from doing anything. Yes, he's voice activated, but you will still have to interact with him physically once in awhile to snap him out of funny modes. Followup a tap with a new command or he will return to his previous behavior. Hit him too many times in a row and he'll get mad and scared!
R2 has a hard time moving around in small spaces. His obstacle avoidance skills are top notch, so top notch that in a hallway, for example, he can get trapped between the walls, never finding the narrow path out. I recommend using him in bigger spaces. My apartment living room is barely big enough for him to explore successfully on his own.
He sometimes gets in a mode not mentioned in the command cheat sheets but eluded to in the manual. Say, "game mode," "answer this" and he watches you! It can be a little disconcerting because it's not always clear what he's doing at first, his head movements can be jerky and spastic, and he ironically doesn't respond to verbal commands just like any other time he's in motion. I believe he's SUPPOSED to respond to questions, but if his head turns while asking he misses it. I found that asking a question and following it with a clap or a tap on his chest is about 50% successful in making him randomly shake his head no or make a positive sounding set of chirps. Think of him as a partially deaf electronic magic 8 ball. I believe that because this mode is so unreliable it was omitted from the later versions' instructions, but it's still programed in. Don't mistake this mode for dead batteries; just hit him on the head to snap him out of it. Or let him do it for awhile to keep him occupied or weird out friends.
Similarly, the easter egg "follow me" mode locks him out of verbal commands. In a confined space it can be more like a "fear me" mode as he backs away from anything near him. Backing him into a corner is often easier than leading him into a room if the room is small. In more open spaces it works great. Again, hit him on the head to snap him out of it.
R2 always draws attention at parties, at least from my nerdy friends, and definitely entertains the guests. Just be aware that it can't be too loud for the voice commands to work. It's still fun, though, because he'll think he heard a command and take off doing something unexpected.
I only wish that in "command mode" there were more things you could program him to do sequentially. You can plot a course with a string of directions, but how about doing a dance, turning on his light, or finding a person after moving somewhere? I'd love to have him be able to play back a message you record, too. I hope there will be future versions that incorporate these ideas.

Different and fun, April 1, 2011
By Great Granny
|
|
Before purchasing this product at Christmas, I read a variety of good and bad reviews on this site. I risked buying it, and I haven't regretted my decision. Our grandkids are 6 and 8, and they've had a ball with R2D2. You MUST read the very clear directions that come with R2 BEFORE you try to operate him. I think some of the negative reviews came from people who took R2 out of the box and attempted to operate him without doing so. Be patient and work with him a little, and your kids will enjoy him. Ours play hide and seek light tag with him ( he counts to ten with a series of different beeps and then goes in search of the kids). They also love R2's dance mode, when he plays the Cantina Song and dances as only a robot can. He also patrols the entire house without bumping into walls or furniture or tumbling down the stairs-- amazing! R2D2 is still functioning as well as he did at Christmas and still has his original batteries. Also, Amazon's price was $50 to $100 less than the prices I located at other sources.

Great droid, January 30, 2010
By J. Welling (SoCal)
|
|
Cool toy. He doesn't follow directions every time but its often enough to be a lot of fun. He works better when the background noise is kept to a minimum (like turning the TV off). The "Dance program", "Remember Darth Vader" and "Play message" responses are especially entertaining to Star Wars fans. Once he has you trained to wait for his responses (positive or negative), he works much better. Battery life seems pretty good. Santa had been watching these for a while and finally jumped on it when it was an Amazon lightning deal before Christmas and it is well worth that price.

I am very impressed at how much I have enjoyed interacting with R2. He's fun to tinker with and he looks very cool as a shelf piece. I would definitely not recommend this to anyone under the age of 13 because he can get a little finicky but perfect for older kids and adults!

LOTS OF FUN!!, January 11, 2010
By Carolina Girl (CHARLESTON, SC, US)
|
|
I ordered this for my 12 year old son for Christmas 2009. He is a huge Star Wars fan and requested this as one of his gifts. I thought it would be a waist of money and be a toy that he would lose interest in after a few days. I was so wrong. It was his favorite gift. We were all amazed by this little robot. It is important to read the instructions and commands. My son has mastered the commands and we all have a blast with R2D2. It is really funny when R2D2 is stubborn and shakes his head no. If there is a lot of background noise he has trouble hearing the commands, but we have not found that to be a big problem.

R2-D2 is AWESOME!!!, December 7, 2009
By Computingmajor3 (Cincinnati,OH USA)

This little replica R2-D2 interactive droid is really fun!
There are all sorts of commands for R2 to follow and also some games
I was searching around on YouTube and came across a bunch of videos of this R2-D2
interactive droid and found out there are "easter egg" there like hidden commands that
are not listed in the manual, this is very cool.
The best video was R2-D2 vs the household dog lol.
This is AWESOME it will probably be a sought after collectible in the future.
I'm glad I have one in my possesion!

Having another toddler in the house!, January 23, 2010
By R2's Mom (Cloud City)
|
|
I can't remember ever having so much fun with a toy! It's like having another toddler in the house. He'll follow your commands only if you say them correctly in the right order, but his voice recognition is amazing. He will respond to female voices as well as male and this system does not require training, except for the owner. His negative responses sound a little too much like "bastard" for me. Other than that, I enjoy his whistles and tweets immensely. I can't believe his artificial intelligence is at such an enjoyable level for the great price I paid for him. Adding an ability to record half a dozen messages to his repitraTo make him better is to his repertoire.

To infinity and beyond...., September 19, 2011
By Musicman (California)

While an expensive gizmo, it certainly is a lot of fun. With lots of pre-programmed activities and responses, it can provide hours of fun. The responses to questions about "Do you remember..." and then character names from the Star Wars movie. Are quite fun. Then, little R2D2 can take an attitude and refuse to do what you want. (If it gets too sassy, you can command him to return to obedience.) Lots of fun!

Worth the Money! Our new family pet!! :D, December 25, 2010
By Berries
|
|
I bought this product 2 months ago for a Christmas present and was so excited for my son to open today today (christmas morning)... after playing with it I decided I had to immediately write a review! First of all, if you have no patience this is NOT the toy for you, this is what I get from the people with bad reviews. You have to get to know him, learn what makes him happy and what makes him sad/mad. When I first turned him on, he seemed almost scared/sad but he cheered up just by talking with him (really I didnt even give him commands) just let him beep back at whatever I said to him, he likes to talk! Then I started with commands of people I knew would make him happy! If he does get in a bad mood, you may have to tell him several times to "behave yourself!" and then "reset system" brings back to normal. You get used to his beeps, and if you are boring or annoying him he'll walk away lol. He heard a movie on the tv and rolled in front of it, turned towards the tv and watched it (no command used, he just sensed the noise from the tv). Make sure to pause and give him time to respond to the steps in the manual and he responds to much more than is listed, I already had him doing several other songs & dances. I think his stubborn nature makes him a little more fun, if he did only do just what I wanted him to then he would be kinda boring and we'd be bored of him. My son calls him his "pet R2D2"... my son has more trouble controlling him, but hes only 4 and doesnt get yet to pause to get him to understand commands but he loves just talking to him and seeing what hes up to lol unfortunately my son likes to upset R2 by asking him about Darth Vader! but I have quickly learned how to fix this problem! I love this toy, it really has a personality of its own!

Awesome toy! Kids (and adults) all love playing with R2!, November 26, 2010
By Toy Crazy in Texas (Fort Worth, TX)
|
|
I (Santa) got this for my 6 year old son for Christmas '09. He was so thrilled! At first it took a little while for him to get the hang of giving R2 commands...you have to pace your commands and you can't talk too quickly. But once he got the hang of it he was in HEAVEN! R2 has a large variety of interactive commands/activites. He plays messages, music, games and can even "guard" a room against intruders. All my son's friends love R2, and adults get a kick out of him, too. My youngest son, who is now 3, has a great time with it, too...but he has no idea how to operate it. :) We are very happy with this purchase and are happy to see the kids enjoying it even now, almost a year later. Hopefully R2 will stick around for years to come.
Cons - Commands have to be delivered in a specific way (instructions are very clear)
- Room has to be quiet or R2 gets "confused" and won't respond
Pros - Cool factor
- Secret commands not listed on instructions are exciting for kids to discover (internet
searches help)
- Durable
- Rolls well, even on carpet

R2D2 makes me feel 30 years ago, I am more exited than my kids.
Toy is ok. sometimes you have to be patient and to repeat the instruction to get the correct reaction fron R2.
Remember to switch off the red button (at the front) that free the wheels to let R2 move.
Very good present for all ages.

Save Your Money it's junk, July 3, 2010
By Mark Twain999

The Droid that does nothing. After have three different people trying for two hours we gave up and sent it back.
Once in a while it would respond to a command, just enough to make me think it is another piece of software driven junk.
If it were a mechanical toy it would be pulled from the market but it seems people just accept that it's OK for anything with software to work half-way.
From the reviews it seem some people had good luck with them that's why I bought it. Maybe some work better than others.
On the plus side Amazon was great about the return.

R2D2 not all he's cracked up to be!, January 23, 2010
By M. Atag (JACKSONVILLE, NC, US)
|
|
My son has asked for this robot for the past two Christmases. I finally broke down and bought it for him because he is getting older and this past year is more than likely the last year he will believe in Santa. I couldn't wait to see the look on his face when he realized that Santa finally had brought him this robot, his "dream" gift! We took him out of the box, read the instructions, and inserted the batteries! We were quickly disappointed as he only does two or 3 of the commands and frequently tells us "no" by moving his head from side to side. This is a great disappointment to my son and to me who spent A LOT of money. I don't know what to do as he has already been opened up and played with or at least attempted to be played with. This was a waste of hard earned money and my son barely plays with him because it is too frustrating!!

This is a re-wrap of the same broken item year after year, November 27, 2009
By izzycoupon (texas)

This was such a cute idea for a toy and we were all very excited to open this toy and get it moving. NOT....runs into walls, spins in circles and does not follow voice commands...Very frustrating. My husband is very mechanical and can get most things to work. This was faulty right out of the box with no fix in sight. This toy keeps coming out year after year and is a dud. Had bad reviews just after we bought this last year... Looks like the exact same Star Wars dude from several years ago with awful reviews... hummmm. Me thinks there is a huge stock of this crapola somewhere....

My boys are in love, February 15, 2011
By A. Melendrez (Austin, Texas)

We bought this for our son who turned six and he adores it. It did take him a while to get the hang of articulating his commands but is now a pro. Our three year old also wants to control R2 but has a more difficult time remembering the sequence of commands and this just confuses R2 and then he gets mad and we have to reset him. Overall a great toy and easy to put together but whan using with younger children he can get confused and frustrate the boys. We love him.

R2D2 is now our new favorite "pet", September 10, 2011
By Animal.Friendly
|
|
I got this Interactive R2D2 for my son for his 8th birthday, and now all of his friends (and a couple of their dads) all want one, too! He plays hide & seek - BIG party favorite! When you're not giving him commands, he just rolls around the house, whistling, and "sneeking up" on things sometimes. My cats don't know what to think of him yet! It's almost like he has feelings - if you tell him "Time Out" he'll ignore you for a second, then finally turn around and roll over to the nearest corner and face it like he's in trouble. It's hilarious. He's like a member of our family now. We all absolutely love him!!!

Just for display and collection, June 10, 2011
By Gary C. (NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ United States)

|
Just like any other Star Wars fan, when I saw this R2D2 for sale, I got excited, while it is not of the same size as the one in the movie, the size is acceptable. when I initially got R2D2, I tested it as soon as I got the time (since I've read some neagtive review before I purchase the item), R2 recognizes commands such as the " Spin the Droid and other stuff", for this particular unit that I got , I would say it recognize just 50% of the commands, no matter how clear I speak near his microphone area, after almost 2 weeks of testing it, the unit gets frozen every after 5 minutes of play, I tested/observed it for another 3 days, same problem persisted, I had to send it back to Amazon, and ordered a replacement. Upon receipt of the new unit ( replacement ) The 2nd unit has the same thing, as it only recognize/obey like 50% of the commands, same as the other unit that I sent back, he gets confued with other commands. so far this 2nd unit doesn't freeze. Bottom line is , if you are willing to pay $100 plus for this R2D2 just for display and memorabilia, and not expect much from the " interactive " feature, you won't be dissapointed, but if you are expecting too much from that feaature, you will probably get frustrated.

Remarkable!, December 16, 2011
By BobK (Spokane, WA USA)
|
|
I have this version of R2D2 and the larger one as well and find them both extremely capable and spot on as toy robots go. It autonomy features are remarkable. I say that as an engineer who makes decent enough autonomous devices, and the features in this robot are honed and responsive to a level that shames me. R2 is able to maneuver on deep pile rugs as well as hard flooring, a feat not too many robot toys can emulate. It's voice recognition is exceptionally well done and give R2 the endearing character recognized by Star Wars fans. Suffice to say that the product description for this toy is conservative at best, it does everything promised much better than one might expect or experience with other offerings. While its functions are somewhat complex, the same cannot be said of its operation. I would suggest that a five or six year old could easily master control of this robot and be able to use it to its full potential. But as it mentions in the instructions, keep him away from stairs and keep the safety on when he's on a table or something he could fall from. Falling over wouldn't likely harm the robot, but a fall from any height very likely would. That said, it is well constructed. It takes four D cell batteries plus four AA batteries and gets a lot of use from your average Energizer or Duracels. It doesn't suck batteries like a hungry vacuum cleaner as many toys do. Playing with the toy teaches the concepts of planning and programming on a rudimentary level, but is a good introduction on a very basic level. While youngsters love this, it's appealing to all ages. I gave my first one, the larger of the two from Astromech to my grandson and missed it enough to replace it with this one. They are equal in their abilities. R2 comes with excellent and easy to read and understand instructions, along with a 'cheater card' that reminds users of the commands it accepts. This is a wonderful toy and faithful to the original in looks and function.

My kids (affectionally) call it "Artoo Dumbtoo!", December 12, 2011
By Amazoned (California)
|
|
Got this for my 6 year old on his birthday, and of course he loved it. But it's his 8 year old that is able to issue command with the right speed and clarity. That is what's required for this little cutie robot. It takes practice and can be extremely frustrating at the beginning. Kids like to say fast. So advice from a parent that gone through the initial euphoria to pure frustration to the kids start to enjoy, and that is to keep emphasize the following when issuing command to R2D2:
1. Pause between each part of the command, and wait for R2D2 to acknowledge. Kids (and even adults) always forget this.
2. Speak clearly. Kids many times don't.
3. Speak SLOWLY. Kids always ended up speaking too fast for R2D2!
4. Speak exactly! R2D2 only understand precise commands. So with instruction says "Hey R2D2", you cannot just say "R2D2".
5. Must be quiet - minimize background noise
Once the family adjust to R2D2's precise dialog and tone, it becomes more enjoyable. The robot can have very cute responses, especially when it refuse to do something (or wheels locked)! The dance program is cute and is a show off. The "light tag" is fun for the kids and their friends. When they just want to marvel the little robot, they issue the command "Go on Patrol" and just watch the little cutie stroll everywhere!
As for the educational value, it's a good first introduction on robotics - that the machine is not smart. It presents teachable moments for a tech-savvy adult about how robots work and how to make them smarter.
For family with little Star Wars fans who adore R2D2, this is a very nice get.

Must have for any Star Wars fan, December 6, 2011
By momof2boys

This thing is awesome! It was the one thing I wanted for Christmas because it is a bit pricey, but it is so worth it. He does everything he's supposed to: He follows your direction, he holds your drink, he dances, and he's even kid friendly. My three year old thought he was very entertaining. I wish he were a bit bigger, but other then that I think it is one of the coolest things I've bought in a long time. I would recommend this for anyone who wants their own little R2D2 companion, because yes, he will follow you around :)

Hey R2D2...You're a Fun Droid!, November 11, 2011
By PittsburghPeter
|
|
While a bit expensive for a toy, R2D2 is loads of fun. We purchased it for our almost four your old granddaughter, who loves it. She does need help giving R2D2 commands, as her voice does not project strongly enough, but her father, who is a major Star Wars fan, is happy to help out.
Others have reported problems getting R2D2 to respond to commands, but that was not our experience. We followed the directions and after some practice, R2D2 responded consistently to the pre-programmed commands. As others have noted, R2D2 does get a little finicky sometimes...but you can send him to a corner for a time out when he doesn't listen or he misbehaves.
R2D2 is adept at getting around and surprisingly adept at moving over minor obstacles.
Can't speak to R2D2's long-term durability, as he's only been a member of my granddaughter's household for about a month. The storage compartment door seems like it could break off easily, but on the whole R2D2 seems to be solidly built.
It would be nice if R2D2 could be programmed to do more complex tasks. R2D2 can only be programmed to follow a short sequence of movements.
Other than perhaps stimulating an interest in robotics, R2D2 has little educational value. But hey...it's a toy. A really fun toy.

This seller was great. I had a tracking number and information sent to me almost immediately after my order was placed. I also received my package within a week of placing the order. The item was new and in original packaging just as the seller had promised. This was a great experience and I would recommend this seller to others.

Star Wars Interactive R2D2, December 29, 2010
By Jill K
|
|
We bought this toy for our 6-year-old granddaughter, who loves everything about it and can play with it easily. The lights and sounds are very cute, including the shuddering motion it makes when it hears Darth Vader's name. It has sensors so that it does not walk into walls. The only problem is that it sometimes does not recognize voice commands the first time. You have to speak slowly and clearly, and with a little practice can speak so it understands, always beginning a command with "Hey R2". It is a good toy for someone who likes Star Wars.

Pretty fun, but a little frustrating!, December 26, 2010
By Natalie
|
|
Ok, I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 37 year old Fiance. He loves star wars and I just thought it would be funny. Pretty expensive gag gift but what the hell! We have nieces and nephews who would get enjoyment out of this if we didn't.
R2D2 is pretty neat, but he misbehaves a lot. At first we were really pissed because we were trying to get him to do things and he wasn't listening to us and we thought this toy was a piece of crap. Then we read the directions more and it says sometimes R2 wont listen and you have to tell him to behave. Ok - we have to tell him to behave A LOT. And we even put him in time out and he cries and whatnot. That is the only thing I don't like about R2. He's pretty rebellious.
When he is behaving though, he's cute as hell. If you ask him about darth vader he starts freaking out. He plays a few games like dance party, hide and seek... He will guard your room, you can tell him to turn around, move any direction, etc.. He plays a secret message, has a light beam... He'll hold your drink.. He's pretty cool. It definitely takes some getting used to though.
Here's the deal, we are adults and so these kinds of things are cool for a few days but then we go back to real life. Any child would love this though and I see them getting enjoyment out of it for a long time to come.
However I paid $150 for this thing. Personally I think that's way too much. It's definitely cool, but maybe about $75 or less cool, not $150. If my fiance wasn't such a HUGE star wars fan I'd be trying to kick myself in the ass right now for buying this. But I know that when our nieces and nephews come over they;ll get a kick out of it.. and probably our future children will too.

NOOOO!!!!, August 1, 2011
By mr. nick pants
|
|
first of all, it took 12 DAYS for this thing to arrive. And when it got here, it was in a box that was halfway open already. and it has absolutely no original packaging! When I looked inside I saw r2d2 in 3 parts: his torso and front leg, and his two back legs. And the directions were all over the box. When I got a closer look at it, the cargo hold on him was pushed in and broken.(now it swings open and closed.) One of the pages from the instructions are missing. r2 is full of scratches and marks, and the only thing his arm carries well is a 12 oz. can! he works well thouh but it has limited commands. fun to play with for a little while, but you'll soon become bored of it. not reccomended. if you want a fun robot I would very much reccomend the i-que robot. don't buy r2d2, it's not worth the money!!!!!!!!

Not for the little guys. But my middle schoolers love it., March 6, 2012
By Steven Perkins (Detroit, Michigan USA)

This is what I dreamed about as a kid in the 1970's my own freaking robot that obeys voice comands. I could see a little kid getting frustrated with the programming sequences but my kids (10+) got it. You have to memories some command strings and say them in the correct order, proper diction is a plus also. But it does work, and the result is worth the effort.
Hey r2. Command mode. Follow me.
And you have a security guard filling you. Too cool for words. Was the hit of the party. Worth every penny.

Interactive R2D2, January 9, 2012
By Wildhog
|
|
Really fun, interactive R2D2 with his own personality from the movies, love the fact that he makes all the sounds from Star wars and have a few hidden Easter eggs! Well made interactive toy that can avoid almost all obstacles and high on details, only negative things I can say is the extendable camera eye gizmo is a bit cheap, the soda can holder can barely hold a soda and R2 will tip over if he gets too close to stairs. It's a must have for every star wars fan!

FUNNY DROID, December 29, 2011
By 18wheeler
|
|
Found that this r2 requires 4 RE-CHARGABLE D Batteries ..and 4 AAs(not needed rechagable ),. and it can be trained ...So if you are having trouble with youres and if every thing is functioning ,, LIKE LIGHTS, NOICES and TURNING ECT>.. This Robot.. And that is eactly what it is ,a voice command computer and you can very easally echo your voice or pick up radio waves.. IT takes time to figure out where he works the Best ..Voice command in almost any system takes training ..But if .not for the fact that you realley don't need to let people handle it .and. It should be a plug in and rechargle system with, (an AC and DC charge and constant use system ,so not to drain batteries.),,R2 would be the coolest toy you could have . We sit it by the door and it is a funny syntry and people love it !!.IT is difficult to get it to do every thing it does, but, so what ! it makes people really think we are talking back and forth with it. Ha Ha .and it really is worth 100 bucs..

Was skeptical (after reading reviews) but it exceeded my expectations, December 29, 2011
By M. Finney
|
|
I wasn't sure this toy would work as claimed, but since the price dropped, I decided to take the risk. I am so glad I did! This toy works exactly as the manufacturer promised to my surprise. Woohoo! I think the reason some folks have trouble with it is because they aren't reading all the directions. For example, if you have him locked in stationary mode (bottom button lights up red) he won't be able to do some of the things you ask if they require motion. If you don't happen to see every battery compartment (some might not be obvious) he will turn on, but not function. My son whizzed through installing batteries and missed one so just be sure you are careful with that part. Also, if you don't give him a few seconds to warm up, he won't listen to you. But all of that is covered in the directions.
Also, if you don't sequence the commands properly, he will get confused, but just follow the chart and he works brilliantly. Also, I have to say this toy is more durable than I thought. It can understand all types of voices (young, old, soft, loud) as long as you speak clearly and enunciate. I am a toy skeptic in general, but this one is worth the money! My 9yo played with little else on Christmas day because this toy was so fascinating.

Don't bother, January 25, 2012
By Homeslice

I purchased this toy for my 9 year old son for Christmas. It's a great concept, and he loved it out of the box. However, the voice recognition is poor (10% at best), so it's really too frustrating to work with. Others seem to have had better luck with it, so maybe this is a software update issue - however, I wouldn't buy it until the manufacturer (Hasbro?) fixes the quality issues.

R2D2 MORE LIKE SHORT CIRCUIT!, January 2, 2012
By Logic Boy
|
|
Folks, if you are looking for the perfect gift for your kid (mine 6 years of age) do not waste your money on this over sized waste can. The Robot is non responsive to voice commands even after spending hours trying to get him "trained". I want to give this a good raiting but for the money it falls very short. As a matter of fact we are shipping ours back. This was suppossed to be my sons big gift for Christmas, and well it just doesn't deliver as advertised. Yes, there are some good reviews, and that is what lead me to buy this very item, but I promise you, you too will be disappointed. We have all taken a try at getting our Robot to work, and if Mom and Dad can't get it to listen my 6 year old son won't either. AMAZON, you need to get with the maker of this toy, and consider having them reboot this item, before you give it the boot off your website. I write a few reviews here and there, but this disappointing toy sure got my attention. I just can't help to think of the 80's movie Short Circuit with this lack luster, unresponsive, take up space knucklehead!

I love this toy! My boys are 5 and 3 and have a little trouble with the commands but their faces light up every time he moves around our house. He takes a little to get used to but once you have time to play with him he really is a lot of fun.
READ the INSTRUCTIONS!! My husband is in LOVE with him. He seems pretty durable and is something I would buy again!

I am 10 and I like r2 very much. It does everything it's supposed to do accept follow you. It says on the box that r2 will follow you but the handbook doesn't have a command for that. When I say follow me r2 will wonder around. Also, when he is wondering around and you walk to him, r2 will back away. R2 is still fun though. He is a good toy.

By Jeff from NY

I purchased this for my 8 year old son who is a very big star wars fan, he was trying to save his money for it but it in his words it was too expensive. Well I am very glad that I bought it. As soon as it arrived I knew it was a success, both him and his older (11) brother very very excited. I was nervous about the ease of use based on some of the previous reviews I had read but it was not a problem at all. They got it working right away and really enjoyed it. My older son is actually wanting this for christmas now. I would definitely recommend this.

Keep background noise to a minimum, January 10, 2011
By Lee

Fun toy that our 8 year old and 3 year old enjoy. The one negative comment that we can make is that R2 is very fussy about background noise. As indicated in the directions R2 obeys comands much better when background noise is minimal. Otherwise we love R2D2!

WORTH IT !!!, January 5, 2011
By ANGEL (USA)

So I bought the droid for my hubby for Christmas in the begining of Dec 2010. Not sure who was more excited me for purchasing it , or my husband when he opened it . Finally I couldnt stay anymore and he opened it on Christmas Eve ( long hall ;-) .
Out of the box he was , loaded him with the batteries....and no lights, limited communication, no movement at all... We gave the little critter until christmas morning/day and decided unfortunate he needed to go back to his galaxy for some repair..with great dissappointment , answered a few questions (3 if that much )on the return form online, and before u knew it the replacement was already on the way..Return procedures were beyond our expactations..great service, easy and very pleased. Thank you .
The New R2 arrived with in days. It was Christmas all over again.
Loaded the batteries, lights working, movement ( don't forget to push the red light in on the bottom ). AMAZING, this little thing is the funniest ever. You need to speak slowly and make sure u wait for R2 to respond (beep). He loves to talk, just a little tap on the head and he's back to original mode (companion ).Working on Command mode & hes the funniest, looking forward to all other options.WE LOVE IT...

Read the instructions., December 17, 2010
By Midwest Buyer (Indianapolis)
|
|
We bought this toy 5 years ago for my son. R2 is still out and played with many times a year. He generally helps give out Halloween candy with me every year and the neighborhood kids ask for him. I've read a lot of the complaints an suggest that most might be user error or impatience. Remember It is obviously NOT R2D2 of the movies with an actual brain. If it is in motion the voice receptor is off (says this in the info) you tap it lightly on the head and it stops to "listen" You basically have to wait for the right response from R2. "Hey R2?" (He turns his head and tweets) Do you remember (pause - He tweets again ) "Princess Leia? (R2 acts excited moves around - turns on his light and transmits the audio message "Help me Obiwan Kenobi..." Great fun. Uses infrared to play hide & seek - he once found the warm laundry fresh from the dryer due to its heat :) The current Amazon Site says
But a child's first response on seeing this is to blurt out in one quick sentence "Hey R2 do you remember Han Solo?" - Not the proper cadence, so the simple processor can't keep up and r2 just shakes its head. If you take the time to read the literature, speak clearly and modify YOUR actions a bit The R2 is a great toy. Frustrating for little kids who still believe R2 is alive - Magic for adults and older kids who take time to learn how to control him.

R2D2 fun but not durable or very smart, November 25, 2011
By Claire Watson (Regina, Saskatchewan)
|
|
This R2D2 toy malfunctioned the minute he had batteries. His head would not turn at all, and therefore he had an awfully tough time executing commands. I needed R2 for a special events function, and wound up borrowing one that worked from a friend. Still, the working model was quite stubborn and never did walk or talk properly. I returned R2 to Amazon.

Product as described. Quick delivery. Bought it for my 9yr old. After a month it is for show. Hard to program commands. Takes sometime to figure out how to make it follow commands. Don't waste your time, December 29, 2010
By Kristen Eveleth
|
|
My kids are really into Star Wars right now. I thought this would be a great Christmas present for them. I was a little concerned about some of the reviews, but it seemed like the droid would work with loud, clear commands. Not at all. I read the directions several times to make sure I was using the right commands and saying them properly. This droid is the most frustrating toy ever. It will obey about 1 in 10 commands.....I cannot speak more loudly or more clearly! The most frustrating thing is that it will go off doing it's own thing.
I really wanted this to work, but it is basically an expensive paperweight. I returned it and ordered 2 fun outdoor toys. Don't waste your time with this.....maybe the older (more expensive) model is better.....but this one is USELESS!

R2D2 can't do very much, January 4, 2011
By Lilli (New York, NY)
|
|
We bought this toy for our son as he is a big fan of Star wars and likes robots. Well, it works all right, but it does not do very much. It whistles, turns its head and moves forward. It can "dance" for about 30 seconds. It offers alarm sounds when on "guard". Once my son used up all the commands and there was nothing left to do with this toy R2D2 started to collect dust. There are no truly interactive, "thinking" robots on the commercial market, and this is a fact. Therefore, any robot that is available for sale is going to collect dust after a couple of weeks of excitement. (at least at my home). My son treats R2D2 as a person when it is on, which I find quite amusing. There is no educational value in this toy.

Not for young kids, May 27, 2012
By Gramma7 (NY & FL)
|
|
Bought 2 of these as holiday gifts for grandkids. Unfortunately, they don't respond to kids' voice commands. Even adults have trouble making them respond unless they use precisely the right words, in the right order, timed correctly. Considering the price, not a great value. I think one family returned theirs; the other saved it so maybe their 6-year-old Star Wars fanatic will be able to use it someday. For now, it just decorates his room. Only the 10-year-old had any success getting it to work sporadically.

Disappointed, May 1, 2012
By Agustina A. Ayers (Washington, DC)
|
|
I was so excited to get my R2D2, I love Star Wars! The demo online is better than the real thing. R2D2 doesn't follow commands like he should and he seems to get stuck and we find we are constantly resetting him (turning him off and on) to get it to work again. We're going to keep it regardless but I wouldn't recommend spending the money it's not worth it. If it actually did do everything inthe demo as flawless asin the demo then it would be well worth it. Actually I have a smaller version of R2D2 that comes with a light saber that's more fun and works better.

This is a great companion piece for anyone with mirth. It does the commands listed, and, a few more. It may even have more hidden commands available...time will tell. It seems to be well-made and even mounts a rug from a hardwood floor (and back). I intend to take it into the robot room at work on April 1.

its fun but some minor problems, January 4, 2012
By Zach M (ohio)

|
This is realy cool. When I first got this i thought that it wont work as good because of some of the reviews but mine only has minor issues. For example every now and then the head gets jerky and wont move but when I turn it off and back.on it works as usual. Another thing is that some Of the commands take a while for r2 to do he will just say no and turn around or go away from you like it went out of control one time and while I was trying to turn it off it just kept on moving back away from me and saying no. But over all its cool with some of the commands and it was definitely worth the money and you should get it unless your impatient because r2 does not want to do halve of my commands but just say reset system and hes fine sodomy hesitate in buyiñg this its worth it.

Voice Recognition is Extremely Poor, January 4, 2012
By Anonymous (New Lenox, IL)
|
|
We've tried R2 with several different people, both adults and children, all using the correct commands and following the recommendations from the instructions (speak in a normal tone, minimize background noise, etc.), and I'd say that R2 understands and responds correctly perhaps 20% of the time. When he works, R2 can be very entertaining. The rest of the time, playing with R2 is a frustrating experience that tries the patience of all and causes children to quickly lose interest. Overall, R2 is not worth the money and his developers should be sentenced to hard labor in the spice mines of Kessel.

Lots of fun, January 3, 2012
By Susan P. Nelson (Metairie, La. United States)

My 9 yr old daughter got this robot for Christmas. She absolutely looooves it. You have to be patient with the voice recognition feature. If there are too many sounds in the background, R2 has trouble hearing. Sometimes he just gets sort of "stuck" as far as understanding words. We usually just turn him off and then on again and he works fine. Most of the time he is working fine and he is lots of fun. Totally worth it if your kids like this sort of thing.

fun but not exactly what i expected, December 27, 2011
By jamie
|
|
This is a fun interactive toy with great technology, however it doesn't always work, the commands no matter how carefully spoken and by the book just simply sometimes will not register and that is a little annoying when you have read the instructions and know that your doing it correctly. That being said, it's still fun. I feel like the quality is less than I expected. It is a cheap plastic, the pieces are easily breakable. I was hoping for a more durable one for the price (ouch!). Overall i am happy with this item. It is fun to play with.

Disappointed, does not work well, February 26, 2012
By J. Johnston (Phoenix, AZ)

I had somewhat low expectations for the droid but the fact that many of the commands do not work is disappointing. R2 needs to be reset constantly. He does the dance pretty well as long as you ask right after start up. Other commands are way too inconsistent. Perhaps older versions of this droid worked much better as many recent reviews all seem to have similar problems in that the droid doesn't work well at all. Often times when you issue a command the wrong thing is executed. Having spent many hours of practice I would not recommend this item for anything more than a novelty item for your home office or kids room.

My 5 year old was looking so forward to this toy, but it just failed in every way. We tried everything. I read and re-read the instructions but we could just not get it to operate on a regular basis.

Everyone is having fun with this 30th anniversary addition R2D2. The quality is excellent and fun to learn, play and roam around the house. Hopefully, they'll create CP3O soon...R2 needs his buddy.

I purchased this for my husband who is a star wars fan. He's been wanting one of these for a year now, and was so excited to finally have one. He's demonstrated it to his friends and co-workers and it is just such a cool toy, everyone loves it. My 12 year old son is just as excited about it now. What will they come up with next!? Overall, Great investment. Way to go HASBRO!

Worked right for 5 minutes, January 13, 2012

This was my son's one "big" gift this Christmas, and I wish we had gotten him something else. It worked right for 5 minutes, then started responding with the same answer no matter what command was given. My son ended up frustrated and in tears on Christmas. My husband tried for several days to "reset" it, as instructed in the manual, with no improvement. Amazon was great about returning it, but my son's Christmas was a huge disappointment.

A Kid At Heart, January 1, 2012

I purchased this R2D2 for my husband which he had been asking for it since it came out, a Star Wars fanatic. I was excited when he opened it up on Xmas day. We got batteries and it was adorable. However, I'm not sure if it's just this R2D2 but my husband had trouble with R2D2 following the commands which are pre-scripted. I'm not sure if the mic is just to small or if like the kids do, R2D2 doesn't want to listen. His played with it several times and his still having the problems of R2D2 following the commands or listening to the commands. I was amazed that it moved great on carpet.

Disappointment, December 30, 2011
By D Watson

This robot barely does any of the things mentioned even when following the directions to a tee. Its movement is horrible as it constantly ran into things and its command recognition was horrible. Its a good looking replica but isn't worth the money. Additionally, it requires 4 D cell and 4 AA batteries which I would have been fine with in 1988...

How could anybody not love R2D2? The only trouble was that the kids 37 year old uncle wanted to take it home with him.

This COULD be the best toy ever! But, it seems to struggle. You can hear the mechanisms grinding inside during it's basic movement, and sound will randomly cut out every few minutes. Needs to be "rebooted" constantly. Not sure what is wrong, going to call the company. Too expensive to NOT run smoothly. Box came looking as if it had been opened and re-taped. First bad experience with Amazon ever. Maybe it was just too good to be true.

You got to be kidding me!, January 21, 2012

Bought this for my child for his birthday, and bought it in december 11 and his b-day is jan 12. It worked for about 5 min, and stopped. It would not take commands after a bit, his head turned all the way around and would not move at all. We took the batteries out, and it smelled hot, and made an electric hum once it was turned on. SO we want to return it, but do not have the outside packaging label anymore, so we do not know who to send it to. We will call hasbro on Monday. As they are no open on weekends.

Worked all of 2 hours, January 14, 2012

My son got this for Christmas from santa as his "big" gift. It was very disappointing because the wheels stopped working after about 2 hours. We did all the troubleshooting and it still did not help. On top of the wheels not working it was really difficult for the children (10 and 7) to give him commands. I think maybe this "toy" should be given to teens and young adults.

Stopped working two days after Christmas; called as per directions pamphlet and after listening said to send it back per label that would be sent. I did! Have not gotten it back nor a refund. THIS WAS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR A 10 YEAR OLD LITTLE BOY AND GIRL AND I FEEL THIS IS A TOTAL RIPOFF WHILE YOU SELL MORE BUT CAN'T RETURN THEIR R2D2 REPAIRED. Now to top it off instead of informhing us of any action, or why they sent a check to my son-in-law, not the purchaser, not the person the gift was for but to the father of the children and not of apology etc, just a check, they saw Hasbro on it so they called me and asked what I paid for the item. Not from Amazon, not from the people shipping but Hasbro My grandchildren want this r2d2 so I will buy another but Hasbro said when we shipped it back, that it was no longer making it.
