Good water protection, wierd fit, November 17, 2010
By M. Seggio (New York)
|

Good water protection. They didn't offer an option in these pants in terms of "short" or "tall" lengths. They are a tall fit. I usually wear 34/30 pants. I ordered these pants in large. The waist fit is great but they are probably a 34 length. A bit shorter would be ideal. It would be best if they offered short and tall options. large is your size if you wear 34/34 pants.

Great product., December 24, 2009

Light-weight and relatively inexpensive product. I bought these in one size larger in order to fit over my regular pants. Might need a slight alteration to adjust the length, but otherwise these definitely work well.

Acceptable Rain Pant at a Modest Price, Oversized with Large Bottoms, September 14, 2011
By Scott Pope (Chicago, IL)
|
|
The Columbia Thunderstorm II pant is an acceptable waterproof, breathable pant available at a modest price. Yet, it has a couple of design elements that may not be appealing to some individuals. Specifically, the pant is oversized with large boot-cut bottoms that make the pant more suitable as a second layer. Additionally, instead of pockets, there are two slits that expose what is beneath (e.g. skin) to the elements. Hence, the product NOT really designed for bicycling unless the rider has cycling shorts underneath and ankle bands.
Considering that a breathable, waterproof pant can cost several hundred dollars, a reviewer must take the modest price of this pant into account. Yet, two of the somewhat undesirable design elements have little to do with the cost. The pant legs bottoms are very large, perhaps designed for large winter boots or even ski boots. They are awkwardly large for bicycling or even casual use. Moreover, normal pockets instead of slits would be helpful. Exposing the underlying skin to the cold and precipitation is not pleasant.
In terms of quality, this pant has somewhat thin fabric that can tear relatively easily. The lightweight, flexible outer shell may appeal to certain users but I personally would prefer something more rugged. Also, there are limits to its level of waterproofing. In a torrential downpour, some water still gets through.
If you are financially constrained and intend to uses this pant over another layer of clothing, the Columbia Thunderstorm II pant may be an acceptable choice. Yet, if you need a breathable rain pant to be used as a standalone garment, you might want to consider alternatives, especially if the flared pant legs don't suit your particular needs.
Pros
Inexpensive
Cons
Thin outer shell
Slits instead of pockets
Extra-large pant bottoms

Exactly what I hoped for, March 7, 2011
By Mo
|
|
After trying to get-by with some super-economy rain gear (which promptly fell apart), I was looking for a solid and cost effective solution for cycling to work in Oregon (Fall/Winter/Spring is either cold, wet, or cold and wet :).
My commute is short (about 10 minutes), so I wanted something I could easily slide over my office garb, and these ended up doing the trick. (My initial hopes were to get the set that our Costco's carry each year (I know SEVERAL people who have and LOVE them for general use), but my timing was a little off)
Since I'm all legs, and 6'3", I was keen on the reviews saying that the legs run long.
Nonetheless, I still ordered the Large-Talls. I'm happy I did.
If my primary use was in a standing position, the Large may have sufficed, but the extra length works well for my application.
They're still pretty new, and are holding up great so far (I've got about 50 cycling hours in on them). They've kept me completely dry, and have been great at keeping arctic breezes from chilling to the bone.

Are those pants open on the side pocket?, October 25, 2011
By Jesse

Literally, the side pockets are literally two big holes. My legs are exposed through the two big holes. Is it supposed to be like this? Or they forgot to sew the pockets on?

Good Light Snow Pants, February 9, 2011
By craft vagabond (Monhegan, ME, United States)
|
|
I got these for working and walking outside on snowy days. They cut the wind, repel the snow, keep me warm and dry without being bulky. They are light shell protection, comfortable, have pocket holes to get into your pants pockets and a sturdy draw string for your waist. They are now available in short lengths but I still had to hem mine and its held up fine because the material is good quality.

Not for Biking, July 7, 2011

These pants too wide at the bottom for biking. They are also sized huge. I'm 5'10" with a 32 inseam and the large pants were about 3" too long.

could do a lot better for rainpants, May 16, 2011

There is no zipper in either pant pocket as well as none on the pant leg. Those are my major issues. They are ok besides that fact. I don't understand why you would make rain pants with open pockets

Use them for biking all the time, April 3, 2011
By David Larson

I bike year-round in New York City and I bought these pants to keep packed in my bike bag. The first two weeks I had them I used them almost every day. Very happy with the range of movement and breathability. I have the Columbia Omni-tech shell and I am equally happy with that as well.

Not The Best Rainpants, November 2, 2011
By Charley Ferguson
|
|
These pants are fine. They seem to stop water from getting all over my pants. They are missing some really great features that my last pair of rainpants had, however. A zippered side seam (so you can put on shoes before pants), and more fitting legs would really improve this product.

Dry and breathable, May 29, 2011
By LightGuru
|

I bought these for a float trip down the Rogue. I'm a big guy, 6ft 275lbs. I usually wear pant size 42/32. I ordered these in size XL, they fit great although they were a little long. They breath beautifully so you don't sweat in them, and they kept me totally dry in a downpour. Super pants, I highly recommend them.

Item size not what I ordered, February 7, 2011
By William Yelverton (TN)
|
|
Amazon website offers sizes that are not available from the merchant. I ordered a "small-short" and the vendor Back Country told me they shipped a "small" because they don't carry a 'small short' ... just S.M.L. I selected the "small short" on the Amazon item webpage.
This will be the second item I will have to return - the same item twice. Amazon is communicating size requests incorrectly with their merchants.
The merchant Back Country was cooperative in resolving this issue.

great biking pants, April 22, 2011
By P. Robichaux
|
|
These are some good quality biking pants. I ordered a M and it fit perfectly. I usually wear a size 32-34x30-32 depending on the brand (5'11" tall). I noticed some people saying that the pants were too long, but I did not feel the length was a problem. I was wearing them higher over my pants to protect my rear from the back splash of my tire; so I guess if you want to wear them low, they'll be too long. There's a velcro strap on the ankles which is very handy. However, I don't feel like it allow the pants to get tight enough to leave your normal biking ankle strap at home. The pants are really bulky, but in my experience, I did not feel like this was too much of a problem as I was wearing them over jeans to begin with. Plus, it helps to slip them on easy. I could have slipped them on over shoes, but I chose to remove shoes first to avoid getting the inside filthy. There are slits to allow access to your pants' pockets underneath, which is a really nice feature. There's no velcro or zipper shut, but I didn't find any water sneaking in while riding so I guess it remains shielded enough from the conditions. Definitely a great value at amazon's price so I'm very pleased. I don't know about durability yet, but the material feels similar to a north face windbreaker jacket so I'm not too worried. My legs didn't get overheated inside them, but it was in the 40's. Have to see how they cook in the summer.

Just had a chance to use them, September 15, 2011
By economist13 (plano, tx USA)
|
|
I purchased these for hiking, although using them for golf was also in the back on my mind. I had doubts that it could be waterproof and still breathable. I had a chance to try them today, during a round of golf. I wore them both in the rain and in sunshine. They were waterproof. When I sat on the wet seat of the golf cart I didn't feel any water come through and I could see the rain from above beading on the pants. I kept the pants on when the sun came out and it warmed up. The pants were tolerable --I needed to take off my sweatshirt when it warmed up but the pants were tolerable (with my shorts underneath, of course). I wouldn't want to hike uphill in these pants if the sun were out and it was warm, but it is never warm on the mountains around here (Colorado) when it is raining so these pants passed with flying colors. The only gripe I have is that there is a velcro strip on the bottom, seemingly to allow you to tighten the pants, but the placement of the strips seems illogical since it only allows very minimal adjustment. It also would have been nice for the pants to have a slit at the bottom to allow them to more easily fit over shoes or hiking boots.

Hello, i will be writing a review for this product
WARNING!!! these are Pant Covers Not actual pants..They have no insulation(But keep out Wind and water)and no pockets!! Wear pants underneath or long johns ha-ha
Water-Proof:Great Insulation: Decent(wear thermals underneath, no pockets!) Longevity: Great
I went snowboarding for the first time! Took these pants and they held up pretty good. I went snowboarding during blizzard conditions. It was my first time, it was great.. I fell a lot, and these pants kept me dry and warm! I recommend theses pants for snowboarding IF you where regular plants underneath. These pants took hard falls without ripping or tearing.

Comfortable rain gear, January 9, 2011
By William
|
|
I used it at the last 49er game. Even thought it did not rain much durning the day. It was comfortable and easy to use. I'm not sure if the pocket access will keep out water in a down pour. If the fabric is really waterproof. It will keep you dry. I was a bit long for me but you can roll it up or hemp it.

Good when it is NOT raining, November 29, 2011
By PPrego

Under normal rain and used with a bike the pants don't work. You will get you but wet! I promise! I know you will b/c I got it. The way to solve that problem is that if you ride your bike away from the seat the entire time (it doesn't seem easy, does it?)...

Great pants!, April 17, 2012
By LotusEliseTT
|
|
These waterproof pants are great, though I haven't had a chance to actually test them outside, I did run water on them from the sink and they repel 100% of the water. In a pinch you could even use these as a cup or a bowl. The pockets are not pockets, they are openings that let you access your pockets on your inside pants, I guess these were designed to be worn outside of another pair of pants. They are pricey, so I would shop around, but all in all, I'm happy with my purchase. I would give it a 5 if they were cheaper and if the pockets were real pockets.

Nice pants although..., January 10, 2012
By Javier
|
|
I'm okay with them but not fully happy. Two reasons to give them 4 instead of 5 stars: first, the open pockets (under heavy rain I do not see the point) and second, (my fault so strictly it's not a problem of the pants themselves) my next shop of rain pants will have full zips.
Besides that, their quality is pretty good.

too long!, January 8, 2012
By north westerner
|
|
Just got these pants. Wore them once or twice at work now. Seem pretty waterproof in drizzly/mild rainy weather...., but they are way too long. I am about 5'10" or so and about 32 inch waist. Always a medium in this kind of pants. These are way too long. Have to roll them up, then the water and dirt and pebbles.... get caught in there.... 5' 10" is not small! What is Columbia thinking? Had to use them for work already, as I needed new waterproof pants asap.... Pretty angry about it! Seems kinda stupid to me!

Affordable, light weight - Good not Great, January 5, 2012
By RockyMtn Reviews
|
|
Bought these for my son who wanted a light weight snow pant since he wants to wear the insulating layers underneath and insulated pants made specifically for cold weather tend to get too warm, in his opinion. These are a good, light-weight option. They have slots on either side for access to pant pockets underneath which should work well for hiking or casual use, but invite chunks of snow inside for a thirteen year old rolling around and sledding in the snow. Design flaw or feature depends on your perspective. YMMV. Stay upright in inclement weather and these Thunderstorm pants might live up to their name. I've got a pair of similar weight Marmot Precip pants without pocket access and prefer them over this design. But they generally cost twice as much, or more. Closure at bottom helps secure them over boots. A good, inexpensive solution that my son seems to like pretty well.

Good inexpensive rain pants, December 6, 2011
By Elodea123
|
|
These rain pants are a nice relatively inexpensive alternative to many of the extremely expensive rain pants out there.
These are rain pants. They are supposed to be worn over pants or shorts, not to be worn as regular pants. Therefore they have slits for pockets and have large leg and boot holes. These features are actually nice as I can wear my big hiking boots comfortably and I still have access to pockets underneath the pants. Sure, a zipper would be nice on the pockets, but if your rain coat goes over the slits it doesn't even matter. If you want to wear them out for a stroll with nothing underneath, you will be disappointed, but if you are using them in the field or at work like me, they'll keep your legs nice and dry. They also pack up pretty small which is nice if you bring them backpacking. I haven't really ran around or exercised with them on so I can't say how breathable they actually are.
Pay attention to the sizing chart though. It's kind of annoying that they don't make any of the pants with a 30" inseam. The small is 31.5 and it's pushing it in terms of length for me, but with boots it isn't a problem.

good product and price, June 10, 2011
By M. D. Roach (Dublin, oh United States)

good pants the omnitech membrane is a much better than some waxy coated pants and for the price very good. These fit well over my normal pants and sinch up good. The legs are a little baggy but thats okay. Tested in some heavy raid and didnt seem to seep through at all. Only complaint is that the pocket holes have no closures on them they realy should have some velcro or zippers as this could let a massive amount of water in if the rain is heavy or your at the right angle for them to open a bit.

Was a little concerned they were like 40 bucks, however they pack very small and seem to be very good quality. I wore them in a downpour while handling an incident last week at 4am. Kept my legs warm and dry for the whole hour. May test it on a run here in a few minutes as it is raining heavily right now and will update if necessary.

Good Fit. Great For Golf and in the Rain, April 21, 2011
By Blakely Bear

In the past, rain pants that I bought were always too long. These fit much better. I wear them over shorts while playing golf on cool mornings until it warms up and I can just shed them. Also, I have worn them in the rain and they are absolutely water proof. Love the opening through which I can reach may pants pockets so that I don't have to transfer items from pants to shorts, etc.
