Nice, complete kit - but not ideal for SRAM, January 27, 2010
By Bill (Chicago)
|
|
The housings and cables offered in the kit are high quality, and color choice is kind of a cool feature as well. The housing is compressionless, and one thing I especially liked about it is the brake housing is similar in design to standard derailluer cable housing, meaning it's made from longitudinal strands instead of hard coiled flat strands like you see in other brake cable housings. This makes cutting it easier since you don't have to grind flush or otherwise manipulate the brake housing. I would have given this 5 stars, except that the jagwire "POP" ferrules don't work with SRAM brakes very well. I can see them being awesome for shimano brakes, where normally a ferrule doesn't fit into the barrel adjuster, but on SRAM, where the adjuster is wider and made to fit a ferrule already, they actually make the connection less secure rather than more. So, I had to reuse my SRAM ferrules, but other than that, the cables and housing work great, and came with everything you need.

Excellent Replacement for Shimano Cables, November 1, 2009
By beathiswon
|
|
These work as well as the Shimano Dura Ace shifter cables. Brake cables have a little more firm feel to them than the Shimano's which makes braking easier to modulate. Ferrules with an o-ring seal, frame proctectors for the outer cable casing and rubber cable grommets are also included which is a nice bonus. Overall I'd say these are a better choice than the stock Shimano cable set and less expensive too.

Great cable + Housing, July 11, 2011
By D Horn (DUBLIN, CA, US)
|

This cable set is amazing. The brake housing is very stiff (Kevlar reinforced). Little difficult to cut as a result, make sure you have good sharp cable cutters with good leverage. Once installed, the brake feel is very solid and reassuring.
Similarly, the gear cable set is also very solid. Both brake action and gear shift so far have proved very precise and solid. Very well made, the kit has everything you'll need for a complete install.
This was a new bike build for me, so I can't give like for like comparison, but would definitely use Jagwire again on a bike.

Beautiful, well made, but too short, August 17, 2011
By Mikie (Sweden)
|
|
These are wonderful in many ways, but I had one problem that I think everyone should be aware of:
If your rear brake cable is fully enclosed by the outer cable, as mine is, and you have a large-ish frame, you may find there is not enough outer cabling.
I had this problem, and as Jagwire were unwilling to assist me in any way, the only solution was to purchase a whole second set.
I have only deducted 1 star for that, but I still think it is quite a serious problem, they could easily have added a few more inches of cable.
(They say they will do so in 2012!!!)

Comprehensive...easy..light..slick, April 4, 2011
By SFRoady

Was a little skeptical buying a "kit" for re-cabling my trusty steed. I'm the type that builds nothing stock..i've never bought a built up bike...always built it from the ground up with a carefully selected groupo (if thats what you call it). So when i saw this kit i was skeptical, thinking that they'll never have exactly what i need and/or it sounded too basic and might come with some of that "hey, its a road cable and a mtb cable and ya could use it on a BMX bike too" sorta solution. But when finally was able to re-cable my Colnago i was pleasantly surprised with all that was included in the kit. From super slick thin cables to lite house to all the super nice POP ferrals and other misc parts ya would need (down the the gold-anodized cable ends) the kit had it all. It made a project that can often be a frustrating night of a simple thing like a ferral shutting down the entire project to a smooth less-than-an-hour gig (both der's and brakes) that made me saying "wow that was too easy.. i must've missed a step". My bicci was not a straight forward 100% d-ace/ultegra/record/force/etc groupo either where its really straight forward.. I'm talking about a setup with Modded D-ace shifters going to a campy record front derailer and a modded Shimano dura-ace rear with M5 brakes... ya almost expect something to go wrong but it all worked.
The only thing that i found was that the cables need a fair amount of pre-stretching and/or expect some stretch in your first few rides but that's to be expected. Also the brake housing a little on the thin side so if you are looking to get that super stiff feel outta your brake system i'd maybe consider a something for just the brakes only but it worked great for my kludged application. Add to that the various colors you can get and you'll get the guys in the group ride say'n where'd you get those"

Great Product, not for Disc Brakes (yet), October 12, 2011
By Mike Gaffney
|
|
See below for the -1 star. This kit is great. Solid wires, and the colors are great. Black cables, and bright red housing. Really nice if you want a specific look for your bike. The components work great as well. Riding for daily 10 mile commute in the Seattle rain for about a month with them.
I accidentally bought this kit (because it was a kit) instead of 2 individual ripcords for my road bike that I converted to disc brakes. The cables nor the housings are not long enough to lace a 58cm road bike with discs. However I laced the front to back and contacted Jagwire who was good enough to send me another set of cables to finish the job correctly. They say they will be releasing this kit for discs in 2012.

Everything included1, September 17, 2011
By Dave (Salt Lake CIty, UT)

This kit really makes re-cabling your bicycle easy. It comes with everything you need to cable both brakes and both derailleurs/shifters. The housing appears to be of good, solid quality and the cables themselves appear to have a thin layer of lubrication that helps the cables work better.
I used these to cable a brand new bicycle and was really impressed by well the controls work and even after 500 miles there has been minimal cable stretch, requiring virtually no readjustment to keep the bike tuned.

Low cost, high performance, September 6, 2011
By Eric York (Newton, Iowa United States)
|
|
Although cables weren't the first item I had thought of upgrading in the past, this kit has proven to be more than worth the money spent. A bump in aesthetics only adds to the increase in performance. I have also purchased the Ripcord cable kit for my mountain bike and was floored at the improvement in shifting. From now on, all of my bikes will have Jagwire as their first upgrade.

Need more cable housing ends, July 26, 2011
By shovelhd
|
|
This is a good product. The housing and cables cut easily and run smoothly. Including the cable donuts and the rubber bumpers for the housing was a nice touch. However, they should have included more cable housing ends. I used this on a cyclocross bike which required several short runs of housing. I had to recycle a couple of old ones to get the job done. Otherwise this would have been five stars.

Needed longer cables for replacement handlebars, June 20, 2011
By Disney Semi-Aficionado (Runnemede, NJ United States)
|
|
I have an older Diamondback Traverse mountain bike from the early 90s. Its a tank, but my days of off road riding are over. I needed higher handlebars to go with my higher seat so I could be more comfortable for over the road riding. Got new handlebars with a 5" rise from Niagra Cycle Works which is 5" higher than my stock bars. It left one of my shifters and one of my brakes too short and had to replace the cables. THIS WAS MY FIRST CABLE TRANSPLANT EVER! I read up on "compression-less" cables, which is what I needed. I had no idea about classes of cables until I stumbled upon this fact.
This kit was great. I followed the printed instructions as well as watched the YouTube videos on their website. I borrowed a special bike cable tool my friend had, but a good set of wire cutters would work, too. I only had TWO complaints overall. There weren't enough end pieces to put on the end of the tubes. My shifters and my brakes were both two sectioned, so I needed 2 caps for each section, plus 2 caps for the other gear/brake sections. So in total, i needed 4 caps + 4 caps + 2 caps + 2 caps. It did not come with enough and I had to pull a couple off the old cables. They worked fine, though.
My only other problem was that the pre-attached ferrule that was on the brake cables wasn't the "right" shape for my brake handles. I needed a M&M shaped ferrule and the ones that came with the cables were more of a buoy shape. I just whittle them down a bit with rough sand paper, then smoothed with fine paper, and the went into place.
It shifts and brakes better than the original cables. Very very smooth. Overall, a super value!

Not the brake ferrules I needed., January 21, 2012
By L. Coyle (Juneau, AK)
|
|
I got this for my 2006 Fuji Touring after raising the handlebars (which turned into a complete overhaul for the heck of it). The shift cables went in, easy as pie, but the provided "POP" ferrules for the brakes aren't what I needed- They're very narrow, and I think meant for linear-pull brakes, which wasn't clear to me when reading the description, though now I notice another reviewer mentioned it (my bad). I would have bought some of the standard 5mm ferrules, but my bike shop doesn't carry Jagwire, and they're only available on Amazon in large packages. Instead I'm just going to use the generic 5mm ones from my bike shop. Otherwise, they're nice and smooth, and I love that I could get a cool color! Additionally, if you're using a cross/interrupter brake setup, you'll need to cut the brake cables and install a second set of ferrules.

My go to cables, but warning to those with full cable housing, January 5, 2012
By C. Glupker (Michigan)
|
|
I love these and see no difference between these and Gore Rid-On cables, which cost twice as much. Everything you need for a perfect install. A warning, if you have full internal cable housing you NEED to get the EXTRA LONG version otherwise they will not be long enough. The cable will, just not the housing. Jagwire did send me cable free, but had to wait.

Brought my component group back to life!, May 23, 2011
By Amy G. Chen
|
|
I've been complaining about my Ultegra 6700 shifters for a few months now, and was thinking of replacing it with a SRAM Force group. The front shifter felt particularly sticky. I almost had to put my entire tricep into an up-shift. Braking was fine, though friction-y. I had no complaints about rear shifting. Before taking the SRAM plunge, I thought I'd try installing a new cable system to see if any difference was made.
It's amazing the difference a good set of cables makes! The action in my front and rear shifts is precise and effortless now. I'm still getting used to the braking, which is extremely responsive.
Very happy with Jagwire!

Better than stock for the same price, June 15, 2010
By Margin of Safety (USA)
|
|
I agree with the detailed descriptions in prior posting.
The housing is a very tightly wound wire over center plastic tube the cable passes through.
For the home mechanic this housing does not cut easily it takes very beefy cable cutters to
make a clean cut of it, I resorted to using long handle tin snips as my cable cutter
would crimp instead of cutting it.

Not enough cable, too short, January 20, 2012
By File Server (Marinas Trench)
|
|
Get some brake and/or derailleur cable from your local bike shop, NOT Jagwire.
Costs too much for what you get.
Jagwire does not give you the proper length ... way too short.
If they would add about another foot or so, it would be worth it.
