Who Reads Backpacker?
Backpacker is written for readers who love outdoor adventure. Backpacker readers are serious about their passion for the outdoors, whether it be a simple day hike or an all out backpacking trek. Published 9 times a year, Backpacker provides expert information on the best trails in America, including GPS coordinates to get readers to the most remote and beautiful places nature has to offer.

In 2008, Backpacker teamed up with San Francisco based firm Cooler to calculate their carbon footprint. Realizing that they were putting 5 million pounds of CO2 into the air each year, Backpacker took measures to reduce their carbon footprint, and combined with investment in renewable energy, has efficiently become a carbon neutral publication.

What You Can Expect in Each Issue:
Readers can look forward to reading Basecamp, which stuffs exactly what readers need without an extra ounce of verbiage. The Basecamp section includes:

  • Tripfinder: Match three different destinations with three different timeframes to determine your best adventure trip.
  • 5 Minute Meals: Taste-tested recipes to make backcountry cooking easier.
  • Life List: A concise, inspiring description of everything you need to pull off a once in a lifetime trip.
  • Start Smart: Where new hikers come to learn essential camping skills.
  • The Next Level: More experienced readers can learn advanced, multi-sport skills.
  • Features: Ranging from Backpacker's stories of adventures on America's trails to gear reviews. The annual Gear Guide with over 250 reviews is always popular with readers. Other recent features have been a Life List of 47 must-do trips and 15 amazing flora a fauna spectacles.
Past Issues:

Magazine Layout:
The editors strive to pack as much information as possible into each issue. The layout offers beautiful landscape photography related to articles. Readers will also find the illustrated diagrams helpful and intuitive to follow.

Comparisons to Other Magazines:
Backpacker is for the ultimate adventurers. Other magazines in its class tend to focus more on camping and casual outdoor activity, while Backpacker covers everything from the simple day hike to the most extreme mountain treks.

Advertising:
Readers can expect to find the advertising specific to the outdoor and recreation industry. Most ads relate to either backpacking gear or foods, with the occasional automobile or travel ad geared towards the adventurous consumer.

Awards:
In 2006, Backpacker won a prestigious National Magazine Award. Backpacker's Basecamp department was honored as the best magazine section within the industry. In 2007, Backpacker was named a National Magazine Award Finalist in the Single-Topic Issue category, which honored the ambition, comprehensiveness and imagination of the recent "Survival" issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good For Hikers, March 30, 2008
By trailmaster2
I'm new to Backpacker [1-year], but so far find it to be a great magazine. Here's a little of what to expect:

-info about lots of places to go hiking around the world
-hiking and camping equipment reviews
-hiking skills and tips (i.e. recipes, survival skills...)

Some people may get irritated with the ads, but for me, they keep me on top of the latest useful hiking products.

With great pictures and human interest articles to boot, its one of the best hiking magazines I know of. Also recommend The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution if this annoying foot condition interferes with your hiking. Happy trails!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  This magazine has lost a bit in the past couple years...., February 1, 2006
By secoulte (Lake Tahoe, CA)
This magazine used to be a great resource for hard core bakcpackers with articles about transcendent survival stories and epic backpacking opportunities all over the world. In the past couple years they have changed their format drastically and have focused on "regional" editions and over the top gadget and gear coverage for total gear-wonks.

Don't get me started on the useless monthly section entitled "Social Climber" where people write into to ask what's socially acceptable on the trail with regard to fashion and things of that nature. You are backpacking for crying out loud...who cares?

It seems to have lost some of its humanity and original vision. I have subscribed to this mag for about 10 years and I used to be able to read it cover to cover, now I am lucky if there is one or article worth reading.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Downhill, May 26, 2008
By van-cab (Michigan)
Like other reviewers have said, the content has gone downhill from informative articles on gear and places to go, to garbage that has nothing to do with backpacking. They sell out to gear companies, endorse shady gear companies ie: Big Sky, and the writing style almost requires you to have a.d.d. to read it ( tons of very short blurbs and "tips" thrown all over ).

To top it off, they have been sending me threatening letters to pay for issues they sent me after my subsription ended and I didn't renew it.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Devious renewal policy, September 2, 2008
By Randy
This publication has gone to an assumed automatic renewal - with no choice by the subscriber. Since I didn't agree to this arrangement I didn't bother to respond. The next thing I knew, I was receiving a collection notice.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  I'm telling nasty businesses to take hike, October 8, 2008
By beware (Saint Paul, MN USA)
The free "Best Trails in America" that is offered on this page is inspiring and useful. I was almost tempted further until I read about the auto-renewal policy and sending former subscribers to a collection agency. I suppose their auto-renewal is also subject to automatic rate increases too? Maybe they want my credit card so they can do it all on their own with the notification that never arrived (I can just hear, "oops our systems malfunctioned" or "something must've happened with your mail-or email". Maybe they'll even email the "courtesy" auto-renewal notice with the new price from a server that results in it getting caught in the spam filter? Maybe they don't even send a "courtesy" auto-renewal notice--I just decided against a virus protection software package today because they auto-renew every year at the going rate without any notice unless I cancel.

I decided to tell them to: Take a hike and not with my money! I try not to support nasty businesses, and I imagine more and more people will feel the same as the weigh every expenditure.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Gave me over to a Collection Agency, May 11, 2008

2.0 out of 5 stars.  If I wanted ads and political commentary, I'd subscribe to Time, September 14, 2008
By C.L.B. (New York)
Every now and again, I'll get suckered back into subscribing for this mag. I'm an avid outdoorsman who has climbed about 15 of NY's highest peaks. Although I don't do much backpacking anymore due to a ruptured disk and age, I still enjoy reading about places to go and the latest gear. Well, this magazine used to do that for me. Now it is a watered down version of the old rag.

What irked me the most though is being fed one sided environmental claptrap and political commentary. The people behind this magazine and mags like Outside don't believe there are conservatives who love and care for the outdoors. I don't care for the high browed attitudes espoused by many on the outdoor community. If I wanted that kind of commentary, I'll read "insert liberal magazine here". I want to read about backpacking, not your agenda thanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for Planning, October 26, 2001
By J. Sullivan
I love to pick up this magazine and dream. It seems that every month there is a trail somewhere in the world that they review that I'd like to hike. But hiking isn't this magazine's only focus. I also appreciate the equipment reviews. They usually will run the products they review through a real world test, making the results easier to understand and believe. Plus, there are frequently articles about issues outdoor enthusiats care about. Articles about scenic photography, articles about wildland politics, and articles about outdoor adventurers are all included. But, above all, this magazine is a great one to browse through when you want to think about being somewhere else!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The only choice really, July 5, 2002
By J. Hammond (Atlanta, GA USA)
No other outdoor magazine comes close to Backpacker to answer the questions of where to go and what to take. There are more destination suggestions in a year than one could ever visit in a lifetime, all with accompanying directions, notes, climate, visitation levels, etc.

When it comes to gear, the editors work hard to keep quality AND cost in mind and are careful to test less-well-known, but worthy brands. This is a departure from other outdoors mags that seem to sell recommendations to high retail price manufacturers. Backpacker even did a review of the gear available in large discount stores...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A 10 star publication, August 24, 2002
By MotherLodeBeth (Sierras of California)
This is the most complete publication for any walker, hiker, backpacker that we have found and the August 2002 interview with Colin Fletcher reminded me of why we subscribe and look for each new issue with such intense anticipation.

The Departments are: Backtalk where readers provide their feedback, Signposts which deals with politics and social news stories of interest to the readers, Body Language which deals with mind body spirit aspects of the sport.
Wild Things which is subtitled The Nature of It All. Moveable Feast which deals with food and has some great recipes that are not only healthy but taste awesome. In the August issue they have a great Almond Bar recipe.

Week End Wilderness is the section where they list great week end outings in various parts of the country. Outfitting is all about clothing choices that make walking, hiking etc enjoyable and safe.

Get Out More 2002 is a section where readers share places they have hiked and what made it special. Know How is about what it says.......Skill techniques and tips. Like leaving the tent behind and saving the extra weight and sleeping under the stars in a better warm sleeping bag set-up. Backcountry is about tales from the trails.

The Special Section carries feature articles on backpacking and things like kayaking, snow trips, fishing and backpacking etc. As well as issues like new equipment and hidden away places for hiking that most people ignore.

It is simply the best magazine on the subject and one any serious hiker, walker, backpacker all seasons enthusiast will have in their home.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Obnoxious and harrasing subscription renewal phone calls, December 30, 2009
By Michael Patrick
Over the past several weeks I have received up to three calls per day from Backpacker urging me to renew my subscription "now!". The frequency and tone of these calls have crossed the line into obnoxious harrassment. A number of the calls have occured minutes after I hung up on the previous call. I am letting my subscription end and am not renewing due to this rude and intrusive treatment from Backpacker. This is coming from someone who has been subscribing to the magazine for well over ten years!

Note that there is no Masthead on the magazine to tell the reader the structure of the organization, nor is there any contact point via e-mail except on the website and that is to Customer Service. I am sure all inquiries to Customer Service are given prompt attention when they are critical of Customer Service.

If this is Backpackers new method of securing subscription renewals, I am better off without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Flawless Publication for Lovers of the Great Outdoors, November 3, 2003
By Bryan Carey (Houston, TX)
Backpacker is an outstanding magazine for those who love to hike and also for those who enjoy paging through a magazine containing lots of enticing photographs of nature scenes. This magazine is, first and foremost, a publication for lovers of the outdoors and the sport of backpacking. But the pictures of mountains, lakes, streams, wildlife, etc., are enticing to anyone. They can quickly convert the non- outdoorsman type into a nature lover.

Besides the great pictures, Backpacker is also excellent for its product testing and for its advice and educational material. Backpacks, mountain bikes, tents, and so forth might seem like simple products, but you would be surprised at how many different varieties and options are available for this type of merchandise. Backpacker describes different items available for sale, complete with web site address and phone# so you can make a purchase, and it often conducts tests to see how the different products stack up. It also offers educational material on the sport of backpacking and general advice on such topics as food, exercise, proper nutrition, first aid, etc.

Backpacker averages between 90 and 120 pages in total length and it's published 9 times per year (three of the issues combine two months into one). It's one of the few special interest magazines I have read that has something to offer most anyone. Even if you don't like hiking, there is still a good chance you will enjoy thumbing through the pages of Backpacker, if nothing else, just to enjoy the great photography.

Overall, this is an outstanding outdoor publication. The articles, the personal stories, the advice, the photos, and the educational material all add up to a perfect magazine for anyone who loves to partake in outdoor activity or who just enjoys looking at the stunning photos. 5+ stars to Backpacker!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Selling out?, December 31, 2007
By Fritz (Brockton)
Since AIM Media bought Backpacker from Rodale Press and brought on a former Outside magazine editor, some of the down-to-earth relevance of this once dependable, informative, readable magazine has gone out the window in favor of more titillating fare. It hasn't reached the bottom of the barrel like Outside (with its emphasis on macho self-indulgence), but recent articles like the one describing how the father abuses his daughter on camping trips (Feb 08) make one wonder where it's headed.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Watch out for the annual renewal at $40 / year!, December 23, 2010
By JGF
SYNAPSE - is a company that collects $40 each year to renew this subscription for Back Packer Magazine. There is no annual notification and since I was not the receiver of the magazine, I was unaware of it being continued, until I found the charge on my credit card statement.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  great magazine but a bit too close to its advertisers, January 6, 2006
By Arthur Digbee (Indianapolis, IN, USA)
I look forward to Backpacker every month. It mixes practical trail information about hikes with feature stories, articles about gear, and always has great pictures. Most of the columnists and regular features are also interesting. I find one of them annoying, but I can live with that.

The magazine has recently gone to a regional focus that gives people day hikes "where they live." That's great if you're on the west coast, since you'll get some California hikes if you live there, some Washington hikes if you live there. But the Midwest stretches from Michigan to Texas. Here in Indiana, I'd rather get Appalachian trails (or southern trails from Alabama and Mississippi) than trails from Texas or Oklahoma. Could we have a "Great Lakes" region, maybe?

Also, the magazine is heavily dependent on equipment advertising and that's obvious in the editorial content. The magazine's philosophy is that of the unreconstructed gearhead who loves spending money on stuff. I know that's how the magazine business works, but I don't have to like it.

Those complaints aside, it's the best backpacking magazine out there, and well worth the price of a subscription.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not just for backpackers, November 13, 2002
By Eric W. Sullender (Portland, OR USA)
This magazine covers a lot more than just backpacking. It is a valuable reference for all types of outdoor pursuits. The travel destination suggestions are creative, but seem a bit unreasonable if you are not stocked up with vacation time. The gear reviews are thorough and fair, but could be more extensive in terms of the number of manufacturers and models tested. The fitness advice, while directed mostly to walking a trail carrying a load, can easily be generalized to keep you in shape. Backpacker doesn't contain as many narratives as some of the other outdoor magazines, but this can be taken as either a positive or negative.

Even with these criticisms it is still a great magazine. If you like to do stuff outdoors in any season I highly suggest it. It will open your eyes to other activities you can try, places you can go, and gear you can use.

I've only been a reader for one year, but over the course of that year I've been nothing but impressed by this magazine. I just renewed my subscription for a second year.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Where Else will you get in Depth Analysis of Duct Tape?, May 20, 2005
By Stanford Gibson (Davis, CA USA)
I'm not much of a magazine guy, but I must confess I am thoroughly addicted to this one. It is smart, fun, helpful, inspiring and well written. Content usually includes: a backcountry skill, a lightweight tip, a couple underrated destinations, caring for some body part that is troublesome when backpacking, backcountry food ideas, as well as a number of other brief tips, debates (e.g. deodorant, worth the weight?) trail suggestions and commentaries. There are also always extensive gear reviews (and an annual dedicated issue) that I could do without, but I'm sure are helpful to gear addicts. Oh, and the photography is fantastic. On the whole this is a great little publication that really accentuates the backpacking experience and allows you to live it vicariously when you are not able to get to the mountains.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  They lost me, July 17, 2006
By Wes (World Citizen, Earth)
I used to pick this up regularly until one issue featuring an article listing the most scenic places to defecate was written. I figured by that time, the editorial staff had just about scraped the bottom of the pit toilet not having anything better to write about. Still, there are some good trail write-ups from time to time. They'll have to work harder to get me back though.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Full Price for 1/3 a Magazine, May 17, 2010
By Outdoorgunknifehikingandbbqlover (SoCal)
Like others have said, you basically pay for a full magazine and get what amounts to 1/3 a magazine, 1/3 gear review, and 1/3 ads, which is at least 1/3 less magazine than the typical periodical. I was VERY disappointed with this magazine. I thought I had finally discovered the perfect outdoor/hiking magazine and was extremely unhappy when all I really found was 3 "regional" hikes that aren't really all that close to me, and a bunch of reviews on high end gear that I don't need and will never buy.

Thumbs down

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Magazine!, January 24, 2003
By Amber (Little Rock, AR United States)
Backpacker truly is an awesome magazine. My husband has been getting it for a while now and we both love reading it. We're not real sporty people, but we do like to hike and camp, and this magazine offers so much for us. I give it the absolute best rating! I'd suggest anyone who loves the outdoors, and hiking at any level, to check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I DIDN'T THINK THEY MADE 'EM LIKE THIS ANYMORE..., January 30, 2005
By NotATameLion (Michigan)
Backpacker is a rare thing in the periodical market: a magazine that never has a weak issue. I have subscribed to Backpacker for a year now. It has only gotten better in that time--truly going from strength to strength.

If you love the outdoors, this is the magazine for you. Your level of experience at things like hiking, camping, rock-climbing, snowshoeing, canoeing, kayaking, and yes--backpacking, is not an issue. This magazine consistently has something for people of all levels.

My debt to these pages is great indeed: I have learned some skills and honed others. I have discovered (and visited) some places I did not know existed. It was in Backpacker that I was tipped off about the Beans at the Roosevelt Lodge (this alone being worth the price of subscription).

I love: the Reader's Choice Awards, the Gear Guide Issue, the work-out plan from last year's spring hiking issue, and the stories/feautures. I didn't think they made magazines like this anymore. I was wrong.

Backpacker is an excellent publication. I give it my highest recommendation. Get a copy today.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Magazine is great - renewal through Amazon is not, September 20, 2010
By NK
Backpacker magazine is great, however ordering a renewal through Amazon appears to have many bugs and is not recommended. There were problems with my order (they did not extend my current subscription, but just added a parallel subscription that started immediately) and despite several phone calls and emails I could not find anyone within Amazon that had the capability to fix the problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  To commercial, June 13, 2008
By Richard N. Petrin
There is a lot of good information in here, but take everything with a grain of salt. They are driven by their advertisers, and strangely enough many of their reviews sound more like an ad for the product instead of a review. So try to read between the lines, and try the equipment yourself before you buy it. Overall a good mag.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty good, with one caveat, September 11, 2011
By DesertDuke (Idaho)
Its a pretty good magazine and I do look forward to each edition. It is particularly good for reading during the winter so that I can keep psyched about hitting the trail. The caveat is that it has one big problem and that problem has been getting worse and worse. TONS of space taken up by supposed "gear review" sections and articles that are really just adds for particular brand items disguised as an actual article. Sometimes it seems like 1/3 of the magazine is devoted to this crap. I know they need to make $, but the "gear reviews/lists" are OUT OF HAND. If one factors this in as advertisements (which they really are) then it has large portion of the pages that are adds and not the meat you wanted to get.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Backpacker magazine unscrupulous subscription campaign, April 3, 2011
By Jem
Backpacker Magazine is sending unwanted subscriptions to people who apparently just click once on the wrong ad. I was searching the internet for local topo maps when a window opened thanking me for the subscription to Backpacker magazine. I closed the window, cleared cookies and cache. A few days later I received a bill for the subscription mailed to my home !! And I am not the only one falling prey to this unscrupulous subscription campaign. A quick search on the net will reveal many other victims as well. I urge anyone thinking about subscribing to this magazine to think otherwise.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  all advertising, April 6, 2011
By caseyfoofoo (Rochester NY)
this magazine is a fantastic collection of information about new products and places to go. It advertises in the form of articles. like most magazines today it covers products related to the hobby. So if you want to know more about sleeping bags, hiking sticks, hiking trails, etc. this is the magazine for you. The pictures are handy for a kid to cut out when doing one of those lame homework assignments. got it for 5 dollars and I see it is 5 dollars again. Wait for that deal. don't spend more than that. It isn't worth it. For a good magazine about stratagy, go for "boys life". It is an all around good magazine for kids and adults.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Backpacker: Destinations, Skills, Gear, March 26, 2010
By youth mentor (Salt Lake City, UT)
Backpacker magazine is for great resource for adventurers, hikers, campers, trekers, and gear-heads.

Backpacker is a quick read (generally apx 80-100 pages)with colorful fullpage vista photos, which features:
- adventure narratives
- trip specifics: GPS routes, maps, permit info, trail highlights, elevation stats, etc
- lists of the "greats" (enumerated lists of great camping sites, great gear, great national parks, etc)
- recipes for the trail
- gear recommendations
- survival skill guides
- additional information/resources made available on the webiste

The destination guide information is helpful to expand your backpacking, camping, and trekking trip options. The skills are sometimes pretty basic (first aid, bear safety, leave no trace)--but even highly-accomplished adventurers can use a reminder sometimes. The gear suggestions are often of the expensive-cutting-edge persuasion and trend toward the pursuit of the hyper-light.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Used To Be Better, October 27, 2008
By Freelance Writer (Ohio, USA)
Backpacker was the PREMIERE outdoor adventure magazine until it changed hands from Rondale press. Now it is a shell of its former self. Still better than the fashion-puke rags that claim to be adventure mags like Outside and anything with "Mens" in the title. A few less ads would make the magazine better, but for those who complain about the political edge, Backpacker has a long tradition of EXCELLENT outdoors-related political commentary. Backpacker reviews have always been spot on and I have never been dissatisfied by any of their recommendations. Worth a cheap subscription price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Best All-Around Outdoor Adventuring Mag - Though has Slid a Bit, April 25, 2007
By OtherWorlds&Wisdom (USA)
I've been looking for a good outdoor magazine for some time. Most focus on hunting or fishing, while there's nothing wrong with that, I just don't do those things very much anymore. Some, like Outside, have become political rags written by people who know virtually nothing about the outdoors. Backpacker, however, focuses on hiking and camping like it should. The skills and survival issues are priceless. Sometimes they go overboard on gear reviews, but many are also valuable, better than one I read in Adventure magazine (if you are spending hundreds of dollars on jeans for hiking, something is wrong with you). However, sometimes all of the gear reviewing does get to be a bit much. Most hikers/campers aren't constantly buying new gear. Only the weekend posers are. There used to be a lot of good articles on people and places in the hiking and camping world, though as late not as many. Overall, a great resource for hikers, geocachers, campers and climbers - but after two or three years the magazine will get kind of repetitive for experienced folks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My "go to" for cool info mag., August 3, 2011
By bluedog (Illinois)
I love this magazine!! It has great info on trips, gear, how to's & a wide variety of things. I'm just starting out with hiking, this magazine is great to help you out, weather your a beginner or a pro. Great help in vacation planning- places to go and cool sites to see, even if your not hiking. It also gave me info useful in everyday life, like how to deal with this record breaking heat in mid-west! Signs of heat exhaustion/ prior to stroke, steps to take to deal with it safely. I always find something cool or useful from this mag. I highly recommend to anyone who goes outside!! Saves you $$ by showing the best gear in a wide range of prices, field tested by people who are out there doing it! And their web site, wow! Love it!! Thanks, it's a whole new world out there!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A good magazine, August 15, 2011
By Simonuca (Santiago, Chile)
A nice magazine, mostly intended for USA citizens. If you are from other countries or you dont live in USA you might look elsewhere. It has a lot of info and trails for USA. It also has good advice on gear and tricks to make your life easier and safer on the field, so if you get a good discount for a subscription go for it, despite the fact you dont live on USA. If I was living at USA I would give it a 5 star rating

Backpacker is a great magazine for people who really get out and hike. So many outdoor magazines are more fashion shoots and for armchair travelers. Backpacker is full of useful information.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great read for new and experienced backpackers, July 26, 2010
By sobek7007
The magazine is thoughtful and fun with a wealth if useful information. I particularly enjoy the hike descriptions and have got a few great ideas from the featured trips. It also includes useful tips and advice from how to cross a river in flood to preparing a mean campsite meal.
One of the few magazines I've bought where i really look forward to it arriving in the mail.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I learn some things. It is worth it., June 28, 2010
By Vincent R. Sherman (Whidbey Island, Washington)
There is some good information here about equipment, potential hikes, backpacking technique and survival.
I know that the publisher could be influenced by advertizing, but there is a ton of equipment information here, and I can sort through it to get a good picture of what equipment is out there.
The magazine is useful enough that I read every issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A necessity for every backpacker, May 6, 2010
By Alan D. Jezusko (St. Louis, Missouri)
Backpacker Magazine is great. It gives me the information I need to make smart purchases on gear. It has good reviews that help me see all of the new equipment that I didn't even know I needed. But more than just informational information, it has a balanced blend of information and inspiration. It always has descriptions of treks that I can, or at least would like to, picture myself taking someday. The stories inspire me to step away from my desk and get out hiking. The articles are good in that they are interesting to both the newer backpacker and the experienced. I've been backpacking for about 10 years, and Backpacker still gives me great ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great magazine, April 2, 2010
By freakna (auburn ca)
just got my first issue. its pretty good. articles include, destinations with pictures and suggestions. although i probably wont use but i found it amusing. a list of topo maps that u can have texted to your phone. backpacking gear. some of the best produced equipment. from what i can tell. the tester actually test the eq! foods, recipes, even had a cute little maze puzzle. i drowned the first time through. along with other stuff. i also received the backpacker gear guide. now this is the main reason why i like this magazine. a list of all the new gear. boots, tents, packs. all the info you need including some ratings. if you just a day hiker, you'll love the random facts and spot to go in backpacker. if you spend most of your time living out of your backpack, traveling weeks on end. backpacker gear guide is amazing. after all bad gear can be a pain in the butt or even fatal.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Take a Hike!, December 6, 2009
By A Hopeless Romantic (New York City)
It's been years since I've been on a real hike. This desk job and aging knees is really starting to tell on me. This is my book of daydreams. While I am very familiar with some of the hiking trails in NY/NJ. And love the scenery, the peace the crunch of leaves under my shoes. I have slowed down quite a bit and I have not met people like myself like who to spend the day out on a rugged terrain. Ah but back to the magazine it is filled with articles on trails, equipment, clothing, recipes and information for packing for your hike. Lots of Ads and phone numbers enable you to find the equipment you need. So whether you are going to hike the desert or going for that Rocky mountain high you can easily find the info and stats you need. I eagerly await each issue and guard jealously at work, I pause, glance over articles. Marvel at the experienced hikers and their adventures and wish I were there. (SIGH)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great to okay, June 2, 2009
By Chazzo books and bikes (SW Georgia)
Like everyone else, I think this mag used to be far better. It is now too glossy and sales oriented, but hey that's where the money is, right? I do like the personalized touch of regional maps (most of which are pretty useful). It is a good mag to get you to trails if you are new to hiking. I always appreciated that Backpacker isn't as over-the-top, Xtreme like many outdoor mags. I have no desire to climb Everest or jump out of a plane with a snowboard. I hope the editors will get back to basics, but, as for now, it is a good pick for people who want to get into it or for people who just like to drool over cool gear and imagine that they are into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  "He's Hard to Please!", July 25, 2008
By yes I still read (Atlanta, Ga)
I bought this magazine for my hiking husband. He had the dream to hike most of the Appalchian Trail before age 70. This magazine went to work in his brief case, and was quickly missed when our daughter picked it up to read in her room. He had an interest in most of the articles. It was well worth the purchase price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Backpacker magazine, June 20, 2008
By Gary Smith (Texas Hill Country)
I've just renewed my subscription, and a friends also, for Backpacker magazine for the...I don't know how many-ith time. To me Backpacker is the quintessential magazine for any backpacker. It informs and entertains anyone from the first time hiker to the person that's hiked all their life. From the food recipes to the first aid techniques to the annual gear guide, to the incredible photography and informative articles, no publication does it like Backpacker. I'm sold.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Incredible for the Weekend Outdoorsman, September 21, 2011
By Matt Brosseau (Illinois, USA)
I've been subscribing to Backpacker for a few years. While I was a college student my grandparents got me a subscription each Christmas as they new I loved to take advantage of the parks around my campus on the weekends. Now I subscribe through Amazon's auto-subscribe feature and save all manner of money on a great publication full of not only great tips for making the most of your trip but also for being safe while you're in the great outdoors.

The writing style has suffered a little as of late, but the last few issues I've received seem to be back on track. All-in-all the magazine is well worth the cost of subscription.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Once was Excellent - but no more, December 6, 2011
By Bill Bag (Munster, IN)
Was a subscriber for many years, had great info, recommendations and stories. Always looked forward to each and every issue. But finally we had to pull the plug as the political/social agenda of the editors was infiltrating far too may articles and the bias was becoming nauseatingly obvious. It was no longer a good reference, resource and idea generator for hikers/backpackers, but more a PC media piece with an axe to grind. Too bad.

By Colorado Hiker Girl
My husband is a backpacking finatic! He grew up backpacking in Big Bend National Park (TX), and he got me into it in college. We moved to Colorado after college just to be able to enjoy the beautiful outdoors & mountains on a regular basis!!! We are both very adventurous, and he absolutely LOVES this magazine!! It gives us so many great ideas for backpack trips, and other places to go for backpacking and sightseeing trips! We got such a good deal for it thru this offer, that we have decided to make it an annual auto-renewal!!! I hope you enjoy this magazine as much as he does!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Marketing Tools, January 9, 2012
By Casual Gamer (Austin, TX)

As several others have related, this magazine has lost all credibility.
For the most part, the writers are simply marketing tools for whichever company purchases the most ad space or sponsors their trips.
But, as a professional copywriter, have to give them props for the body copy selling crap gear :)

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't read this, just go outside instead, January 2, 2012
By Andrew Schriner
This magazine clearly exists mostly to convince you to buy gear. If you're into backpacking, it's easy to get hung up on gear choices, and that can interfere with your enjoyment of the activity. Stop worrying about it, and don't listen to Backpacker Magazine, and just go outside instead. You don't need all that junk. They do have a lot of recommendations for destinations, but with this newfangled invention called The Internet you can find all kinds of information about destinations. They also have lots of "tips" for backpacking and camping; few are useful, some are obvious, and a handful are just dumb, bad ideas. Don't bother with Backpacker.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Abundant Advertising & Credibility Issues, February 14, 2012
By Tradecraft (USA)
Whether you are a novice backpacker, casual camper, or an avid outdoorsman Backpacker is a magazine you want to love. And, there are not a lot of alternatives to choose from with this market. A typical edition will have articles and information ranging from: trips, hikes, adventures, maps, gear reviews and testing, survival information, outdoor cooking, field medicine/health, skill building, outdoor stories and more.

Pros:
+ Photography is exquisite and phenomenal.
+ Specialized issues such as the Gear Guide and Survival Issue.
+ Some articles are well written with useful information.

Cons:
- Frenetic layout and design. Some articles and stories are challenging to follow in an organized manner because there is too much information crowed on one page to include text boxes with small print, photos, and comments. The layout is often busy and atrocious.
- Text is difficult to read due to small font size in some areas (and I have perfect vision!)
- Abundant, over the top advertising! For me this has become the deal breaker with this magazine. There is just way too much advertising all over this magazine. The advertising, while a necessary evil, is overkill!
- Credibility issues related to advertisers who pay to have their products placed in this magazine and articles written about these very products that are being advertised. I seriously doubt that an advertiser is going to pay big dollars to place a product ad if the magazine were to write a negative article or gear review. Again, this is a deal breaker for me. I want to know that gear reviews and articles are 100% completely unbiased. I am not convinced that Backpacker can make such a claim.
- Some articles lack enough detail to gain useful knowledge or applicable skills
- Way too many inserts are placed in each magazine attempting to get readers to subscribe.

I am done subscribing to Backpacker magazine. Way too much advertising, credibility issues, and a layout design that is dysfunctional. In the Internet age much of the information provided in Backpacker can be researched online for free! I may purchase the Gear Guide or Survival Issue once a year but I will no longer subscribe to the magazine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Leader of a culture, August 2, 2009
By ^**^ (new england)
I get the feeling the people making this mag really like what they're doing and are good at it. They do a good job covering the whole country instead of just one region. Even though I live very near the White Mountains it's a lot of fun to hear ideas that come form other parts of the country. It's like hearing reports on a distant family member and what they're doing and it gets you thinking a little differently about how your doing things here. I only wish the mag's were longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  It's a dreambook for avid hikers and backpackers, December 4, 2008
By D Swaney (Big Lake, AK USA)
Every month I look forward to receiving Backpacker, and usually read every word of it (except the annual Gear Issue, in which I tend to cherry-pick information that's of interest). There's also a down side, however, as I always read the trip descriptions, gaze at the enticing photos, and find myself pining to get out and do every trip described (and more), which can be frustrating! Anyone with even a remote interest in getting out and enjoying the wilderness on foot will find inspiration here.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  too much random information, November 25, 2009
By em (pittsburgh, pa)
I got this magazine in order to see some great photos and read interesting stories that I couldn't get from the [...] site. I'm sadly not impressed. Each issue seems to be filled with lists: trails to try, new equipment to purchase, etc. There's lots and lots of content but it's in a format that might be better suited for the internet. In fact, it seems like they're taking the [...] website and stuffing it into a glossy printed format. I really like the website but I will not be renewing my subscription to the mag. I guess I was hoping that this magazine would be a companion piece to the site, instead of the same old stuff.

This magazine shows off some great areas and cool gear as well. There are neat recipes and most of the articles are pretty good too. This magazine is great and their customer service is awesome. After several mail changes, they sent me magazines that didn't get forwarded to me without any questions. The articles are great and this is one magazine I don't let any of my friends borrow, I'd never get it back. Planning your hikes works very well, but always do your own research. The gear testing articles are top knotch and have saved me mucho dinero.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Move into the Digital Erra!, May 8, 2012

Download zinio on your Iphone and get the digital version. Then read about some of the great apps available (in the digital version on your Iphone) that turn your Iphone into a gps map, a compass, a camera with range finder, and more! Don't forget to buy a Brick (a big battery with USB ports) to keep your phone charged; solar powered bateries tend not to work too well when you are out in the woods hiking all day. One good thing however with the print magazine; if in an emergency, you need to start a fire...!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Worth the money, April 18, 2012
By suehtemorP (New England, USA)
I have mixed feelings about Backpacker. On the one hand, there is a lot of information about basic hiker skills: dealing with blisters, lightening your pack weight, dealing with spider bites, etc. There are lots of suggestions about regional hikes so that almost anyone could find something accessible. You'll also find a TON of suggestions about, and reviews of, gear.
The articles about hikes tend to be about grandiose month-long treks that casual hikers, or weekend-warrior types like me, will never be able to emulate (at least not until I retire), but they are inspiring, so I can't really count that as a negative. The quality of the writing varies greatly. Some articles are written well and some make me cringe.
The gear reviews are nice because they do so much testing and I feel like they are reliable, BUT most of the gear they discuss is unbelievably expensive. A review for a 500 dollar raincoat isn't all that useful, especially when you can get something totally reasonable for under 100. They also push ultralight equipment too much, almost to the point of being dangerous to novice hikers. Tarp camping is not a viable option for most people and will make them VERY unhappy. And how many hikers are really in the market for a 400 dollar one-man tent, no matter how light it is?
As others have noted, the ads are a bit overpowering as well, but I think this is an artifact of the magazine industry as a whole and is not restricted to Backpacker.
All told, I still feel like Backpacker is a good value for the cost. If you're into hiking, pick it up. Just don't expect more than it will deliver.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Backpacker Review, March 15, 2012

Love the magazine, could go without the gear guide. It took a long time to get the first one, but after that it was pretty regular. Love the local trips they offer!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Full of useful information!, February 25, 2012

I absolutely love these mags! Backpacker is "packed" with tons of useful information, suggestions for adventures, and the low down on the latest gear from front to back. It has been an excellent resource since I've relocated to the NE it gives me new ideas for trails that I have yet to hear about. The Rip&Go section is AWESOME with a simple itinerary that you can litterally just grab your pack and hit the trail with b/c they did all the logistics for you! I'm glad to be a 2-year subscriber and will probably continue to subscribe for years and years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love It......Always Have, May 16, 2012

I have subscribed to Backpacker for more than a dozen years now. Although I have tinkered with other outdoor, hiking magazines over the years, I have always held this one as my favorite. In my opinion nobody does it better when it comes producing a publication for hikers and campers that just can't get enough of the great outdoors. One thing I have always liked about this magazine the most is how it never fails to regularly return to the basics. That is to say, it doesn't always assume that you are a seasoned hiker that well understands the joy and dangers of just getting away from it all in the wilderness. It regularly carries a generous amount of articles and regular features that are fundamental enough for the novice reader or backpacker, as well as stories that deal with easier, family style hikes. It truly isn't all about just zeroing in on the big bear country adventures that the seasoned backpacker will prefer. Though its true that there are more glossy style ads in it than ever before, as well as pull out subscription order cards and ads, (what magazine doesn't these days), it still in my opinion sticks to its guns very well in being a very interesting and excellently written magazine that I enjoy as much today as I did years back when I could actually do some of the hikes that it talks about. I highly recommend Backpacker for its quality articles and photography, and tenaciousness in staying with what made it a great magazine all these years... : )
