Whether you're commuting to work, taking a leisurely ride around town, or just hitting your favorite coffee shop, the Sonoma Urban Voyager men's chainless bike will get you there in style. The bike packs a variety of cutting-edge features into its sleek, streamlined body, including a lightweight aluminum frame that makes parking or loading the bike onto a car or bus a breeze. Specifically engineered for easy, comfortable trips through urban and suburban environments, the Urban Voyager also includes state-of-the-art front and rear alloy brakes with easy-to-reach pull levers, an ergonomically designed seat that helps you stay comfortable on long rides, dual-density handgrips that are firm on the inside yet comfortable on the outside, and a shock-absorbing suspension fork that ensures a smoother, more controlled ride.
The bike's chainless D-Drive system eliminates the trouble-causing chain and derailleur. | Sonoma's Chainless D-Drive System It's the low-maintenance chainless design that really stands out, however. Powering the newest trend in chainless bicycling, the chainless D-Drive system replaces the parts of a bike that cause the most problems--the chain and derailleur. In their place, the D-Drive system uses a drive shaft with a fully enclosed bevel gear system to transmit power from the bike pedals to the rear wheel. Shimano internal gears within the rear wheel help the system run smoothly and quietly while optimizing pedal efficiency. At the same time, the Shimano "twist and go" gear system is responsive and easy to use, so you can shift with the flick of a finger. The chainless D-Drive system offers a number of benefits over traditional chain bikes. In addition to delivering a much quieter ride, it keeps you from ruining your favorite clothes while riding to work or getting grease all over your hands while fixing a slipped chain. The D-Drive system is also protected from external elements, so it doesn't require the ongoing cleaning, lubrication, and checkups that a chain-drive bike typically requires. And the internal drive shaft is less likely to sustain damage from falls and road debris, giving it a significantly longer life than a chain. In fact, the D-Drive system carries a warranty that lasts for the life of your bike. Once you experience Sonoma's exclusive D-Drive chainless system, you may never want to ride a chain-driven bicycle again. Other features include built-in water bottle mounts, durable 700c Kenda city tread tires and tubes, and a handy rear carrier rack ideal for books, files, sports gear, and more. Best of all, everything on the bike is backed by either a two-year or lifetime warranty. The Sonoma Urban Voyager is available in a deep satin forest color with grey accents.
The Shimano 7-speed shifters are located within easy reach.

Just a Novelty Bike, August 16, 2009

This bike is not for anyone who does any serious distance riding, and it's not really for anyone who isn't mechanical either. I returned mine after a few days.
It was delivered fast and I put it together easily enough. The light for the front isn't made for the handlebars, but it is powered by the front wheel, which is cool, even though it looks stupid. The bike's components are poor quality, but I got it for the chain-less aspect, so I was OK with that. My initial feel for the bike was that it was an alright ride. I did switch the seat out right away though. The seat it comes with is not really a comfort seat. The gear shifting is smooth, but you still can't shift too quickly, much like a standard chain bike. Mine did make a strange clicking noise in 4th gear and this clicking got progressively faster as the gears went up. It rode fine though. I rode to and from work a couple times and it was fine. This ride though is only 3 miles and rather flat.
I was concerned about the noise, and I also wanted to know what it took to change the back tire. I also knew that my local bike shop would know nothing about this thing and that I would get charged by the hour for them to figure it out. I know those guys. So, I did it myself. That was when I ran into the first major design flaw. You can't simply loosen the nuts and brakes on the wheel and pull it off. You need a wrench for the nuts and a screwdriver for the gear casing, and then there's this weird trick to getting the gear cable off. I ended up disassembling and reassembling the entire gear set-up. That was when I found out that the factory had actually cut the gear cable wrong, which is possibly why it made that clicking noise. But, my point is, it was a pain. I would hate to have to do that tire change on a cold fall morning.
I thought I might be able to live with it anyways. I did manage to get the wheel off and on OK. Then, once I took it for a longer ride with some hills, I saw the biggest flaw with this chain-less design. When you're pedaling, you lose a lot of energy, and you'll feel it. The bike just requires you to work a heck of a lot more than you would with a regular chain bike, and, no, downshifting doesn't help. It must have to do with the internal gear system. It's horrible for any distance riding.
One thing nice about this bike is the rack it comes with. It's one of those seat-post racks and it actually stays in place. It's not a good enough reason to buy this thing though.

Innovation comes to the Bicycle, October 16, 2010

I am an avid mountain biker and as many people know, mountain bikes are slow and unwieldy in an urban or suburban environment. When I am not mountain biking I am commuting in an urban environment. I needed a bike that is more suited to paved roads, sidewalks, light rail trips, and moving nimbly to avoid hitting people or other objects.
The Urban Voyager is a great bike for this environment. I ordered the bike from the Sonoma website and it was delivered very quickly by UPS. Everything arrived as ordered and was easily put together, the fit and finish is comparable to that of my much more expensive Trek EX8 FUEL. The paint is a nice metallic green that would look at home on a Lexus.
On to the bike review. The chainless drive is great, it is very quiet and you will not miss the constant chain noise. The chainless drive is strong, there is a lifetime warranty to back up the quality. The bike is perfectly made for an urban environment. The tires glide over paved surfaces easily, there is very little resistance. The entire bike seems to glide along as there is very little noise and it's very comfortable.
The gear bag is handy but it is not quite big enough. Regardless of that I am able to tie my back and laptop to the rack and that takes care of my luggage needs. It's very nice not to have to worry about getting chain grease on my clothes or legs when I am coming or going to work. This is a great innovation.
It's clear that Sonoma has decided to let this product advertise itself through people discovering the bike and talking about it. This allows them to keep the cost down as they are not spending on advertising. I would encourage everyone to at least try one of these bikes before deciding. I'm confident that they have the right strategy as this is a really good bike.

Good value for money, August 5, 2011

Bike feels solid and has been well constructed.Nice metallic color. I had no issues putting it together , it came 80% assembled and it took me 30-45 mins from start to finish.
One issue some people have encountered is fixing the headlight, the clamp feels smaller for the handlebar, but that can be resolved by peeled off an inner layer so it would fit properly, the manual did not mention this. Support from the manufacturer trying to resolve this issue was good. They responded to my emails and phone calls were routed to the proper person - nice.
Good value for the price:
1) D-Drive ( no chain )
2) Headlight and dynamo hub ($)
3) Seat bag and Rack ($)
4) Decent seat
Cons:
1) Heavy ( marginally )
