Anyone who rides a bike should have a multitool, and this is the best one to get., June 9, 2007
By John T. (Astoria, Queens, New York City)

This is the Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman of bike tools. If you have no other tools, get this first, because it's all you'll need 90% of the time even if you're into installing your own parts.
I've had mine for over ten years, and rescued not only myself but dozens of other riders from walking their bikes home by making sure I always carry it. And it's a handy multitool for household fixes as well.
If the quality, strength, and durability of this tool aren't enough to convince you, how about this: Just last week, I was removing my crank with it, and the bolt wouldn't turn, so I stood on it--as I had done many times over the years for things like getting a pedal off--and it finally popped a nut.
Entirely my fault--should have been using a crank wrench--but I sent an e-mail to Crank Brothers wondering if it was covered under the warranty and what I would have to do (if it would be even worth it), and within an hour they responded that they were sending me a brand new replacement--no proof of purchase or explaination required to see if it was a flaw in the tool or not, they just replaced it. I received the new one in the mail in just a few days. They also offered to fix my old tool to keep as a spare. Wow.
When I told my friends about this, they said they've had similar experiences with Crank Brothers on everything they make. Absolutely outstanding service on top-of-the-line products.
Besides all that, I think it's the best designed, strongest, and most useful bike multitool money can buy.

Multi tool that does it all, January 15, 2007
By Road Racer (Virginia, USA)

This is a great, relatively light weight tool that slips easily into a rear jersey pocket or camelback. The chain tool & spoke wrenches come in handy if ever needed. Nice small design & the custom support (if you ever need it) from Crank Brothers is the best in the industry.

Every thing at the same tool, January 17, 2008

This tool is the best. You have every thing at your hand.
It's made with hard steel or aluminium , I don't know but is very strong.
It rescued me many times in my trips, also when I'm home, I use it instead other tools.
Not any plastic parts.
Buy it, You will not regret.

folds unexpectedly, June 3, 2008

Crank Bros 17 multi-tool, and probably most like it, folds unexpectedly. The tools do not lock at all in any position. When you apply downward pressure, the offset of the tool from the handle causes the tool to collapse back to the handle.

Great all around tool - don't ride without one!, March 24, 2009
By greenpeacedoug

I enjoy doing my own bicycle repair, but my tool collection is woefully imcomplete. The Crank Brothers M-17 multi-tool goes a long way towards fixing that. It has a full set of hex wrenches (allen keys) for doing brake, threadless headset, derailler, fender, and some crank adjustments. It also has a genious integrated chain tool/spoke wrench for breaking/setting links and truing wheels. One issue with the chain tool: it is quite difficult to use with the newer beaded-pin Shimano chains as there is nothing on the tool to brace your non-turning hand. Not impossible, but difficult. This is true of almost all chain tools that come with multi-tools. If you're going to do frequent chain repairs, consider getting a dedicated shop-grade chain tool.
True to Crank Brothers' form, the tool is very well designed and very attractively finished. It's solid steel - not for gram counters, but perfect for recreational and touring cyclists. The 19-tool variety only adds an extra size of philips and flat screwdrivers.
The only improvement I would make is to lock the fold-out tools at a 270 degree angle so you would get right-angle locked, 180 degree unlocked, and 90 degree unlocked. However, in real world applications, it's not a big deal.

Well made multi-tool., January 7, 2011
By G. Forster (Atlanta, GA)

I purchased this tool for my new mountain bike. I was going to get the 19-function tool, but they were out of stock, and the only difference was another flat blade and phillips screwdriver. I don't think that I'll miss the other 2 tools.
The tool has a feel of quality - the attachments have a nice finish and everything works as intended. It will be a little tricky to use the 8mm & 10mm crescent wrenches (the stepped notch in the side of the chain tool), but I don't think that I have any hex-head bolts on my bike - all fasteners are allen head.
By no means should this be the only tool that you own. It's for emergencies, and will work well for occasional use. But I have no doubt that this will last, and won't leave me stranded in time of need. It's also relatively light in weight for a big hunk of metal.

Don't get on your bike without it, December 31, 2008

Probably the most complete, compact, quality, sleek multi-tool out there. Chain tool works great. Comes with a thick blue rubber band to keep tools in place and add grip.

Crack Brothers Multi Bicycle Fool (17-Function), August 17, 2010
By A casual stroll through the lu.. (Prague)

I wear tight fitting spandex when I ride so I don't have any pockets to put this Multi Bicycle Tool which includes 171 Tools, so I just put it in between my legs, it bulks me up and makes everyone stare at me more but I don't mind.
I've never actually used the Multi Bicycle Tool because it's pretty much worthless, since everything is so small or awkward to hold or tighten with it. I just think it's cool to have it when riding, although it does crunch me up if you know what I mean.
Also, it does not have a hammer, which comes in handy when beating your headset or pedals.
No flashlight either so useless at night.

Great Tool, February 21, 2010
By NWA (NW Arkansas)

The multi tool 17 is the better of the multi tools. I use it at home and if needed on the road. I just can't say enough good things about this tool. I would not ride very far without it. Get a folding plier and a short lenght of wire and you are ready for almost anyghing.

If you like puzzles, this is the tool for you, January 30, 2011
By J. Turcany

Hey, unless you don't mind a tool that falls to pieces due to vibration on a long ride, and you enjoy hunting down little washers and stray parts in the bottom of your tool bag and spending more time putting your TOOL back together than you do actually working on your bike, you might want to consider looking for a more "low-maintenance" tool. What a joke!

I unfortunately needed to use the tool soon after I received it. The tool is as advertised. It's not lightweight, but it is up to the job. I needed to work with the allen bolts on my chainrings and it worked great. Very good quality and alot of tools in a small amount of space.

Crank Brothers 17 Multi Tool, November 17, 2010

This is a must buy for those looking to get a multi tool. Solid build and comes with everything you need and then some. 5mm and 4mm hex and the phillips and flat head with the chain break make this tool amazingly handy.

Crank Bros 17 Function Bicycle Multi-Tool, November 11, 2011
By D. Pham
|
|
Pros: - Minimalistic - Small size - Spoke wrench is removable
Cons: - Tools don't lock in place; closed or open
Thoughts: Bought this to Replace my Alien II after I lost it. This is longer but flatter. It's an easier fit into seat-post bag or pockets but it didn't come with a carry case. Came with a black rubber band that prevents tools from opening but I just threw that out.
It does most of the functions you will need to tweak your bike: adjusting seat; true-ing wheels; removing accessories; changing handle bars; etc. The 4 spoke wrench is actually the tab with "Crank Bros" that has 4 grooves in it. This is twist removable so you don't have to turn the entire tool unlike other multi-tools. The two ends can be adjusted for tension for opening and closing. If you're worried about it falling apart, get some loctite -- though I don't foresee that becoming a problem. It's a good backup tool but naturally, dedicated tools are going to be the go to choice when you're at home.
Bottom Line: Highly Recommended.

Its from crank brothers, one of my favorite brands, its strong, extremely durable, and you can now give yourself your own bicycle tune ups. (if you know what your doing, don't kill your bike by loosening the wrong bolt)

works on all chains!, August 2, 2011
By oheckyeah (ABQ, NM)

I won't add much more to what everyone has already said about the tool. It's great, fairly compact, probably the size of a small cell phone, and gets the job done. It's super solid, I would expect this to cost more than it does at the build quality you get.
I give it 5 stars mostly because of the chain tool. I have a single speed/fixed gear that uses a 1/8" chain, and it breaks it and repairs it easily. I looked all over the internet to see if I could find any information about whether or not it would work on 1/8 inch chains, but couldn't find anything, and decided to take the plunge. Glad I did, it's a great tool and I don't have to buy a separate chain tool to work on all my bikes.

Solid and Loaded, July 24, 2011
By Jake

This multi-tool has everything that any rider could want to make quick repairs up on the hills. Compared to the 19 function tool, there is absoluteley no difference. The chain breaker tool works perfectly for a sram PC-971 chain and pushes the pin out with ease and a good turn and a half left over. Comes with a nice ruberband to keep the chain tool in place and fits easily in my camelbak rogue with plenty of room for many other things. My biking budy uses the same tool but his has taken abuse for 10 or so years now. Crankbrothers all the way! Overall, this tool is bulletproof and I wouldn't have choosen anything else.

Nice, March 15, 2011
By Matthew K
|
|
For most on-road bike repairs this has more than you'll ever need (the exception being tire levers). For at-home repairs this probably has everything you'll need, but you might want to purchase better tools for home that are easier to handle.
I already had tire levers and nicer home tools and was looking for something that I could throw in my saddle bag if I needed to make an adjustment while on a ride. It's nice, too, to have a lot of tools together. So if I'm making an adjustment on my annoying Giant that requires several difference sized allen wrenches I don't need to keep making trips to the toolbox.
In short, buy this and buy tire levers and you'll be set on the road.

A great set of tools!, February 15, 2012
By Kernunnos13 (North Carolina)

I am fairly new to road cycling, competing in a couple of events every year.
I had a basic tool in my little under the seat pack, which was great for helping to change a flat tire. But I did not have anything to tighten up my clips on my shoes one time last year, when I was way out in the middle of no where.
Fortunatly for me, another biker came by and helped. He had a very similar tool that he pulled out of his pack. He had the right settings for my clips, and I was riding away in a few minutes.
I resolved that would never happene again to me.
I have been doing research on a small toolset that I can take where ever I go, and this had great ratings.
It is a nice, tight set, that folds up very nicely all together. The clip wrenches are on the sides, and even though they are a bit clunky to use, it does get the job done.
It is now in my seat pack, and I will be ready for whatever the road throws at me this year!

Works but could be better, October 4, 2011
By Justin Winokur

I like everything this tool comes with. Most importantly, it has a very decent spoke tool that is easy and natural to use. However, it is pretty crappy that it needs the rubber strap to hold it all together. On the same note, if there was a bit more friction between all of the tools, it would be nice so they do not flop around when I am using one of them.

17-function is better than the 19-function, IMO, April 5, 2012
By Ben Woosley (Seattle, WA)
|
|
I bought the 19-function (Crank Brothers Multi Bicycle Tool (19-Function)) first, then after it was stolen, tried out the 17-function.
I definitely prefer the 17-function. The 19-function comes with a case/sleeve to keep things together, which ends up being flimsy and cheap rather than nice, whereas the 17-function comes with sort of a thick rubber band that wraps around the tool and keeps it together. The latter is IMO simpler more elegant.
Also, the 17-function leaves off a few rarely-needed tools which leaves you with a more manageable, less spastic tool. I recommend it, and I might even try the 10-function (Crank Brothers Multi Bicycle Tool (10-Function)) if I had another go - and a separate chain tool.
