Good Value, December 19, 2009
By Mark1064 (Maryland)

|
I purchased the Allen Deluxe 5-bike rack in November 2009. I spent about 15 hours researching bike racks on the Internet and at several retail outlets. I settled on the Allen after comparing features and value between five of the major competitors. I mounted the rack to a 2009 Honda Odyssey. I've used the hitch to carry two adult and two kids bikes for several local trips and one 200+ mile trip. The bikes loaded easily (even the bike used by my 4 year old). The couplings swivel, allowing small bikes to attach with out a crossbar. I added a few bungee cords for my own peace of mind on the longer trip and to reduce sway. The only flaw with the product thus far is that I was unable to put the pin back in the hole after I tilted the rack with the bikes attached. The weight of the bikes appeared to put too much downward pressure on the rack causing misalignment of the holes. A longer pin that could be manipulated better or a second person pushing up on the rack may help. The rack was very easy to put together and install and shipping by Amazon was very fast. The rack has already paid for itself in the enjoyment my family has had biking on several great bike trails with family and friends.

Buy the premium model!, August 13, 2010
By London Girl (Pittsburgh)
|
|
Our previous Allen bike rack lasted about 5 years so we had no hesitation buying another. We decided to replace it because it was getting rusty and some of the straps were broken and we were planning a very long drive for vacation. We chose this deluxe model instead of the premium model which is what we had previously. Both hold 5 bikes without a problem and there is no difference in the actual rack as far as I can see - they are excellent. However, I have found that was MUCH easier for me to manipulate the old premium model to raise it up and lower it down to open the back of our SUV. Right now, my husband can do it with the occasional help of a hammer, but I can't manage it at all. I definitely wish I had spent the extra money and bought the model we originally had. :( Don't make the same mistake!

Perfect bike rack for a big family, August 23, 2009
By Diane McDonald (Spokane, WA)
|
|
This is a great bike rack if you have a big family. We had it on the back of a 30' RV with all 5 bikes on it for 2 weeks and traveled almost 3,000 miles and it held up perfectly under that very rough ride! Easy to attach the rack to the vehicle and also easy to secure the bikes to the rack. Would recommend to anyone who needs to haul a lot of bikes.

Great bike rack for 5, July 29, 2009
By H. Kulstad (Savage, MN United States)
|
|
This bike rack was easy to assemble and is easy to use. We've only used 4 bikes on the rack so far, but it has held up great with them. It seems like it might be tricky to use the bike slot closest to the vehicle because you have to place the bike entering the rack by your vehicle and seem like it might be a tight spot to get it in. We haven't attempted to use this slot yet.

A great bike carrier for a family, August 31, 2010
By Stephenk5778
|
|
I've been looking for a 5-bike carrier for quite a while; this one provides the best balance between quality and value. The rack is well-built, holds bikes securely on long trips, and stays very secure in the hitch - which can't be said for a lot of carriers. When the rack arrived it was better built than some of the "top name" brands I had seen at the local bike shop for a lot more money. It held all my bikes from my top-end triathlon bike to all the kid bikes, with very little "jockeying" to get them steady. Gotta love that!
Only issue was that when the rack arrived, one of the bike holding collars was broken in transit; all it took was one e-mail to Allen explaining the problem and a replacement part was on the way. Great customer service is just another plus. Highly recommended!

Great Rack, April 27, 2010
By Gallows Cove Boy (Houston)

I bought this rack after speaking to my neighbour who has the exact same rack. He loves it.
I bought mine to carry 2 adult mountain bikes and two youth mountain bikes. I have a toddler as well so I wanted to ensure I had the room for his bike when he's old enough to ride.
This is a very sturdy hitch when assebled as per the directions.
The shipping was extremely fast. The assembly was 10 minutes. Mounted to my Touareg perfectly.

Excellent quality, July 29, 2010
By Scott Kopper (Redmond, WA)
|
|
I load this rack with 3 kids bikes and two adult bikes with ease. The bikes all have odd shaped tubes, strange frame sizes and such and no adapters are needed for any of them. It is a highly flexible design. The holders are solid rubber and rotate around the steel support arms on plastic/rubber sleeves to any direction needed. super quality, excellent price, and highly recommended. I often use this bike rack on the back of my tent trailer (the legal disclaimers say don't do this) in a receiver I welded on. I've gone thousands of miles this way and the rack is as good as new.

Great bike rack but follow product instructions, September 1, 2010
By PO
|
|
This is a great bike rack and it holds onto the bike bars without scratching them. HOWEVER, be sure to follow the instructions and disclaimer in the packaging. The rack with our bikes attached did rip our bumper right off of our RV while in transit. The company does state that it is not to be used on RV's. Since so many other reviews stated that it worked well for their RV, we went ahead and tried it. This could have resulted in serious consequences for anyone behind us on the road. It is NOT worth the risk. Use this rack as directed by the company!

A great buy!, August 16, 2011
By maplesmakemusic

We bought this to take our 5 bikes on vacation. We tested it out 2 weeks ahead of our trip and one of the ties broke on the trial use. I contacted Allen and they sent a replacement tie at no charge and it was easy to replace. When using the rack, I did use a few bungees to secure the bikes a little more--mainly just for my piece of mind. We used the bike rack on our vacation (a 5 hour trip each way) and had no problems. It took us about 15 min. to load the bikes--less time to unload them.

Pretty good especially for the price!, July 3, 2011
By Lisa D (Laurel, MD)

Pretty good bike rack. Do your research and you'll find Allen has been making pretty good bike racks for quite a few years. This is a nice 5 bike rack that I bought for $99 on Amazon. The only real drawback to this rack is that the slot for the bike closest to the vehicle is sort of difficult to load up. The other thing is that the cinching straps are of the vinyl variety versus the rubber stretch straps. I think the rubber kind are easier to strap on more securely and tighter. The plus side of this is that I think the vinyl will hold up better over time due to weathering, etc. The rack tilts back nicely and fairly easily to load up the trunk on my minivan. Have yet to try it with bikes on there. Imagine that must be a tad more difficult!

Works Well, June 30, 2011
By LJM

I purchased the Allen Deluxe 5 Bike Hitch Rack so I can take my bike along with my little boy's bikes when we go bike riding. It was pretty easy to assemble and hook up to a vehicle hitch. However, you must ensure you have the right size vehicle hitch. One nice feature is that you do not need to remove the bike rack to access your trunk. There is a pin you can remove which allows the main bar to tilt back giving you access to the back of your vehicle. I used this feature mostly when no bikes or one bike has been on the rack- it may get a little heavy with 5 bikes. It also has a pin so you can put the arms down when no bikes are on the rack. This appears to be pretty standard on most bike racks though. The bikes stay pretty secure while traveling and do not take much time to strap or undo.
There are a some drawbacks. First, it is a bit of a pain getting my bike on and off the rack- you have to make sure you get the frame over the bars and mounting braces depending on which braces you are going to use. These braces twist around which I am assuming is by design, but I am not sure why? You also need to open the straps first so they do not get in the way when setting the bike on the mounting braces. I learned this trick after the first few attempts. The bikes for my little boys only fit over one arm bar so I have to make sure I put them on just right so they do not move around. You will also need to purchase a bike lock and figure out how to get it around the bikes on the rack. Not sure if the one I have would be long enought for 5 bikes? Finally, I do not like the design of the locking pins which allow the main bar to tilt back or bike arms to be up or down. It will be interesting to see how long these pins hold up.

Keep a mallet in your trunk, September 6, 2010
By dschreier
|
|
Its Labor Day, and the Allen bike rack has been put through its paces this summer. The good: It does hold five bikes of various types at the same time, men's, women's and kid's, and it was secure during multiple trips to the beach. The bad: the pin mechanism does not fit well. Once you pull the pin out to recline the rack to open the trunk, I have had to rotate the pin just right and then bang it in with the aforementioned mallet. The ugly: hitch mounted racks disable our car's back up assist system. Overall, for the price it works.

Solid rack, August 2, 2010
By R. Bennett (Ohio)
|
|
I've used this bike rack twice now: on a 5 hour each-way vacation and on a short trip across town. The rack felt very solid during assembly and during usage. The built-in straps handled all my bikes pretty well, but on one of the unique frames I wished the strap was an inch or two longer. It still cinched into the buckle, but didn't feel really secure. On the vacation, I loaded 5 adult sized consumer grade bikes (local big-box retailer type stuff). Three were steel frame and two were aluminum. They all fit securely on the rack and I had no problems during the trip whatsoever. My only complaint is that the top hinge has just a bit of wiggle room in it, so the rack has a fair bit of motion while the vehicle is moving. Nothing so disconcerting to make me stop to double check, but just enough for me to take a star off an otherwise perfect rack for this class.

I would give it 5 stars, but the original packaging was missing one of the nuts. Contacted manufacturer and a replacement was shipped. Installation was simple and have been able to put 4 bikes on so far.
For the family that occasionally needs this, it works great. We use it once or twice per month.

I bought this bike rack for a Triathlon. There were 5 of us and when we usually go to these races we would "neatly" place bikes in the back of suburban or truck(front wheels off) When we got to race, we had a tangle of bikes!! So I shopped around to find a 5 bike rack. Most were WAY to expensive. Then I found this. I was reluctant to get it since it was so much cheaper. However.....it is fabulous. Easy to assemble. Bikes rode to race without movement. And best of all....When we got to event NO TANGLED BIKES!!!

Purchased this bike rack because of my riding family and extended family, and it works just as advertised. Fits five bikes snuggly! Four of our five bikes are female bikes so they lowered crossbars presented a challenge initially, but eventually got the swing and it's been open trails since then. GREAT PRODUCT!

seems to be sturdy and decent quality, lacking features, October 4, 2011
By Y. Ioselzon

Seems to be sturdy. Wobble- free bolt locking it in the hitch is good idea.
Though misses the additional bar on the bottom (see Thule devices) that would allow better bikes stability and possibility to be used for transporting skis without modifications and buying additional adapters.
Price- wise it is very good.

Nice bike rack, September 29, 2011
By Shane akers

I purchased the rack because it could carry all 5 of my families bikes. The rack held the bikes great, however, it could not hold my youngest childs bike which is a small 12". I'm not certain that 5 bikes would fit very compforable on this rack, but then again getting 5 bikes of a rack is a lot. Very good craftsmanship and seems to be good quality.

Awesome purchase, five bikes on a Jeep Wrangler, September 26, 2011
By Kindle Junkie (Nashville, TN USA)
|
|
This was an awesome purchase! I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with a spare tire on the back and a two inch receiver hitch. This rack allowed me to carry my mountain bike, My wife's cruiser bike and three children's bikes all varying in size and shape.
The product is well made, does not shimmy around when loaded and best of all, is easy to load. Other reviewers commented on how easy the straps accommodate various size and shaped bikes and they did not lie. I have owned other BIG NAME bike racks and I have not been able to accomplish this even though I spent twice as much for their racks. I would recommend this to anyone!

5 bikes; 600 miles later, September 6, 2011
By rnewlin16

I was looking for a reasonable 5-bike hitch-mounted bike rack for our family vacation to Santa Barbara and found this. It was delivered in the timeframe specified (which is a good thing since I waited until the last minute) and was easy to assemble with the right wrenches. I must admit being skeptical of anything so awkward looking, carrying so much weight, being attached to a trailer hitch without compromising structural integrity, but after driving the 600+ miles to and from Santa Barbara without any visible stress or bending, I'm impressed; especially after finding out there is a weight limit on the rack itself and not knowing what our five bikes (2 adult, 2 teen, 1 kid) weighed together. The rotating clamps and built-in web straps were slick although I'm a little concerned in the long-run how the webbing will last. I attached a safety strap (not included) around all the bikes and rack, but from what I could tell at the end of the trip, it was unnecessary. Loading the bikes was relatively simple and takes some strength and creativity to intertwine the pedals, handlebars, etc., but no more than any bike rack I've had in the past. I highly recommend this product and the lifetime warranty that goes with it.

Excellent Bike Rack for Money, August 29, 2011
By pstpierre

I have lost bikes off the back of my car in the past with cheaper bike racks that sit on today's flimsy bumpers. This rack held 5 adult bikes for a 200 mile trip to the Cape and back for our vacation. Easy to load and unload. Convenient pins unhitch that allow you to pivot rack down to the ground with bikes on rack for access to cargo area in the back of my SUV. Great rack for the money.

Need a hitch, August 28, 2011
By kay

I must be a dummy but I bought the wrong kind of bike rack. It is really nice but it doesn't fit my van because we don't have a 2 inch receiver. I didn't even know what that meant. You have to have that hitch that has the big ball on it, even if your car has a tow package, you have to have the hitch. I had to return this rack and I was super disappointed because it seemed perfect.

We just purchased this bike rack for a trip to Yosemite. The rack was very easy to install on our car and very secure. The tabs hold the bikes securely in place and allowed us to tighten them to fit. It easily fit 5 bikes and we had no issues at all (3 adult bikes and 2 kids bikes)on the 4 hour drive to and from. We were very impressed with the quality of this bike rack. It was half the price of the Thule rack we were considering buying. Very happy with this purchase and would recommend highly. My husband is very picky and he was happy with the rack!

Just think about it! 5 bike rack "Deluxe" should mean put 5 bike on and go. Not! It takes a lot of work to get 5 bikes on. It is a pain in the ( ) and if you want your nice $$$ bike scratched up!! invest in some bubble wrap.. I would have sent it back if it wasn't going to cost me more money. So I sold it on Craiglist. Spend the extra money and get another brand.. Sorry it's not all that bad it fits 2 bike on with no trouble and no scratches..It might work for you good luck...

We did put this on our camper, but our bumper is made to pull a boat so we had no problems. We only used this once and it worked great for all five bikes. My husband is very particular and he was very pleased with this product. I would recomend this product, but if you put it on a camper be sure that your bumper is made to hold heavy things, because most campers are not.

Strong and Stable, October 16, 2010
By Zorbas (Florida, USA)

|
I have recently purchased this rack so I don't know how long it will last but so far I am very pleased with it. I set it up very quickly to attach to my Suburban. So far I have placed only 4 bikes on it (1 adults + 3 children) and it was very stable and appears very strong. I was able to easily use the slot nearest the vehicle (which means you need to load the bike from the vehicle side not from the back side) which someone was concerned about. Just make sure you don't scratch your car :)

Great bike rack, August 16, 2010
By Chris

I bought this for my 2007 Odyssey for a 12 hour vacation drive. It showed up in 2 days, was super easy to install. I was done in 10 minutes and didn't need the directions. 5 bikes went on without a problem and road there and back with absolutely no problem. Some people talk about "sway" while driving. We didn't get any noticable movement, other than when we would hit a big bump like a speed bump - which I would expect. This is a great value for an excellent product, in my opinion.

So far, working great, October 25, 2011
By Ivan Machado (NJ, USA)
|
|
I bought this rack about a month ago. It was very easy to install and looks nice. Loading 5 bikes can get a little tricky with pedals and handle bars getting in the way, but that's the case with any rack I've seen. I was able to load 2 adult and 3 children's bikes (including 2- 24" bikes) no problem. The nylon straps work fine but the rubber straps on other racks feel a little more secure to me. However, I haven't had any issues with the straps getting loose or anything like that.
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I haven't owned it long enough. I definitely recommend it and I think it's a great value for the money.

Worth the investment, January 9, 2012
By Tim
|
|
I bought this rack for a vacation trip from Reno to Phoenix. Back and forth, we drove about 1500 miles. The rack is solid. No sway or bounce other than the usual movement of things in a pickup doing 70mph down the freeway. The five bikes do fit on the rack tightly, so if you have an expensive bike with a killer paint job, be careful how you load it. We put four adult and one children's bike on the rack, alternately facing different directions, and once bungeed together, they were a solid unit for the whole trip. If you need to access the cargo area of your vehicle, I suggest removing the bikes before tilting the rack down, or have three men with you to raise the loaded rack back up and pin it in place. Well worth the money for me and my family.

I have been using the Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount Bike Rack for 5 months without any Problems. It's a nice solid Bike Rack thats easy to Mount and remove. I especially like the tilting feature so its out of the way when opening up the tail gate on my pickup truck. We loaded up 4 heavy mountain bikes on the rack and traveled 600 miles to NC for some Mountain Bkike riding and you woundn't even know there was a bike rack mounted to the hitch. We were driving highway speeds and up steep hills and the Bike rack held together fine. Getting the bikes on and off the rack was really simple since the strap mounts can be rotated out of the way. This is an exellent bike rack for the price!

Great Bike Rack, February 10, 2012
By Florida Consumer
|
|
This item works great and it fits all five bikes. It was easy to install and looks great. If you want this rack to work with your 5/8's inch hole in your hitch you will have to drill the holes a bit larger. The hole in the bike rack is 1/2 inch. I drilled them a little larger (you don't have to) in order to place my masterlock receiver lock on it. There is a slight amount of movement now. If I had left the hole the way it was designed there would be no movement. However, ratcheting on the bolt was a pain as I move the rack on and off the truck quite often. Well worth the money on amazon.com!

Quality construction at a great price. I mounted it on the back of a fifth wheel trailer and it works like a charm.

This carrier handled 4 bikes from space coast florida to middle ky with absolutely no problem at all, knock on wood. I would recommend this to others and at least for now I would purchase again.

Great bike rack! Solid heavy duty metal parts. Very happy with it so far!
I've only put on two bikes on it. I opted for the 5 bike rack just in case I have friends who wants to come with.

Great Bike Rack!, May 14, 2012

I got this when it was $89 a few weeks ago. What a steal at that price. Very well made and easy to assemble. I carried one mountain bike, one cruiser and two small kids bikes with ease on my 2007 Honda Odyssey with plenty of room between the van and the bike closest to the car on the inside of the rack.

Live that it carried 5 bikes. Love that it can move when you need to get into the back of your vehicle.

Great Price. Holds bikes well. Seems Sturdy, April 24, 2012

For the Price, I don't think you will find a better bike rack. I am able to get the whole families bikes on this thing. Easy to assemble, drops down to open the tailgate, easy to remove, of not using for extended periods. So far, I am pleased with this purchase.

Holy Wow!!, April 21, 2012
By Erin Fennessy (Flagstaff, AZ, US)

I've never owned a rack before and have just been waiting to buy one. After reading all of the reviews for this rack and several other racks, I must say that I am so happy with the choice that I made!!! The rack was incredibly easy to put together, easy to get into the hitch, and easy to operate. I read several reviews that mentioned not being able to get the pin back in once they had lowered the rack for trunk access, I didn't have that same problem.
For informational purposes, these are the couple of issues that I do have (which are not a fault of the rack, but situational):
I drive a 2005 Jeep Liberty. In order to use the 5th spot for a bike, I will have to remove my spare tire. I will also have to remove the spare tire if I want to open the back door of the car. That is a mild set back, but something that I can definitely live with. An if I'm not mistaken, I believe that there is an extension that can be purchased if this becomes a problem.
Also, I purchased a receiver lock to use with the rack. The rack itself comes with a "no wobble" bolt to use in the hitch, and I'll tell ya, the rack doesn't budge when the bolt is tightened. When I put the receiver lock in place, however, there was all kinds of room for the rack to wobble back and forth. In all reality, I can't imagine that any one person will just so happen to have the right size wrenches (you definitely need two in order to get the bolts on and off) while passing by that will make it possible to steal the rack. So really, no worries.
All in all, I'm extremely happy with the purchase. The price was more than right, the rack itself is very sturdy, and I'm just dying to get it out on the road.

Works well, April 14, 2012

Fits well on hitch as expected. All 5 bikes will well and there is no problem getting them on or off. The clip that keeps the rack up could be more secure, it doesn't latch onto anything really, just sits a top the slide bolt. so far it hasn't fallen off but still wonder sometimes. For the price it's great, holding 5 bikes is wonderful!

Very easy to load any type of bike, works great., April 10, 2012

There are only a few 5-bike carriers out there, and this one is by far the best price and works great. The way the holder for each bike swivels makes it easy to mount even kids' and women's bikes. I have not tried any little kids bikes, but my middle school girls' Schwinns went on easily - you just have to be a little creative on how to hang them and how to fasten the holder. The only adjustment I had to make to get all 5 bikes on was to raise the seat on one bike where it hit the next bike's handlebars.
Anyone who complains that this rack does not have the anti-sway tie down like the pricey racks just does not realize that you can swivel the holder to tie down the vertical down tube on your bike. It may not be as rigid as one designed as anti-sway, but worked fine for me. The Premium model has some useful features, but is so much more expensive that this one is an easy choice. Since you are not supposed to lower the rack with any bikes on it, I am not sure what benefit the spring loaded pin is on the Premium. And, if you have all the bikes on your rack locked together, do you really need the locking ring on the Premium?
I would feel safer if the tie downs were velcro, so once you put them through the buckle they were secure. My only problem is that I have to use an adapter to fit the rack to my below the bumper 1 1/4" hitch, and when loaded with 5 bikes it sags pretty low - I am sure I have scraped all the paint off the bottom edge of the rack going in and out of moderately steep driveways.

It is my first one, but looks pretty good for the money. The straps could be better, but I guess you got to pay more to get more :)

Really nicely made for the price. I was afraid that it would be flimsy at this price point. Easy to assemble if you have a good wrench set.

Great so far!!, March 19, 2012

I bought this in the fall so I hadn't a chance to try it out... Assembly was quick and easy.. just a few wrenches were needed... It fit right into my 2" receiver on my car.. I test drove it around for a little to see if it rattles.. No noise what soever from it..
I've only had my bike on it so far and it works great.. I'll load it up with bikes this week and see how it does.. It's built very well so I don't anticipate any problems with 4-5 bikes on it
