1.0 out of 5 stars.  not full proof, August 25, 2010
By Kent Giltz (nyc)
my bike was stolen while locked up securely with this exact lock and chain between 11pm and 1am on a busy sidewalk in the east village nyc..so at least one person out there knows how to open this without a key..it may now be a matter of time..about 10 years ago there was another kryptonite (same style) that was hugely popular in the city until it was figured out and everyone that had one (and i mean everyone) got there bike stolen..i give this a "one" not based on comparison to others, most others are inferior..but simply based on the fact that my bike was stolen with this lock and this chain..so i give the poor rating to remind people that this is NOT a full-proof way of preventing theft..my bike was only worth about 600 new and maybe 400 now

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Mulit-purpose Anti-crime Lock, June 3, 2011
By CTa
This lock is not only effective against theft, but also assault, robbery, terrorism, bullies, you name it. Just pull it out and start swinging it, guaranteed to kill anything that's human. You can even use it to repel bullets, although you shouldn't try swimming with it.

I almost broke my toes on several occasion, when it wiggled itself out of my grasp through its sheer weight and hit the floor. My carbon fiber bike is about the same weight as my friend's steel bike with this monster, and I always fear that it will rip through the bottom of my backpack.

That being said, it probably intimidates any bike thief before they even attempt to break it. I lived in Oakland beside a public high school (go figure what all these little buggers do in their free time. Stealing bikes, that is). At the bike storage area of my building bikes get stolen left and right, but my sweet little ride remained untouched in the eye of the storm, as though it was protected by a spell.

Perfect if you want maximum security, not so if your back is not strong enough to carry it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wowzers!, April 30, 2010
By MP
It's HUGE and no run-of-the-mill combo lock fits on this bad boy. IF any thief can get through this monster (and accompanying lock) - I say they deserve my bike. Nuff said.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy, October 7, 2010
By Rully P. Wijaya
This thing can take some real punishment and i feel safe leaving my bicycle out on the street with this chain. however this thing is heavy and you have to put a little more effort while turning and going up hill. Don't try picking up your bike with this thing attached if you have a weak spine or back.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nobody Messes With Me Or My Bike!, July 31, 2010
By 5-7HEAVEN
Everyone thought it was overkill, even the bike shop owner. Ya can't be too careful or cautious. I'd consider using two Kryptonite locks on my motorized bicycle. I carry this 12lb. chain easily wherever I go, like a bandolier. I'm 64 years old and 195lbs, in good condition.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great chain , doo doo lock, January 26, 2011
By Myung J Hahn (NYC)
Great chain but the lock portion looked like any other ulock (breakable) so I replaced it with a heavy duty gate lock from the hardware store.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The Messenger Standard, November 11, 2011
By Safe
This lock is the Bike Messenger standard for a reason. It is about as safe as you can get when used properly. Even if your bike is significantly nicer than the bikes around yours, this lock is enough to deter would be thieves. CABLE LOCKS ARE NOT SECURE (U-Lock or Chains are the way to go)
It is heavy, (clocking in around 11lbs) but worth its weight in gold.
So here is rationale behind buying a lock this price. Must every LBS will tell you need to spend at minimum 10% of your bike price on a lock. So if you own a a $1,000 road bike you would need to spend around $100 minimum on a lock.
Speaking from experience, if you live in a big city (NYC, LA, Denver, Detroit, Chicago, etc.) or a college town (Boulder, Bloomington, Austin, Boston, etc.) you should spend at least 15% of the cost of your bike on a lock. So, a $650 bike needs a $100 lock.
Even if that is not convincing: What costs less a $150 bike or a $100 lock? If your bike gets stolen you are out much more than price of this lock.
If it strong enough for NYC it is strong enough for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesomely strong but mega heavy., September 30, 2011
By Noah Barron (Santa Barbara, CA)
I've been using bikes to commute for a few years now. But I always lived in low density cities where a lil Kryptonite in my back pocket was enough. Now I live in Queens and ride to Chelsea most days, so I need a more rugged solution.

And the NY Fuhgettaboutit is that solution. Too bad it's too heavy to carry safely on the bike. Seriously, this lock is 10 lbs at least. I tried keeping it in my Chrome, I tried wearing it for a belt...I just feel dangerously off balance and extra exhausted on rides. No fun.

EZ solution: keep it at work. I ride in, temporarily lockup with my little Krypto and run and get the Fuhgettaboutit from my desk and lock up both wheels with this heavy metal monster.

So...my reco is if u need mega safety and have a place to keep the lock, go for it. But if u need a bikeable carry solution, go for something a little lighter, like an array of Krypto U-locks and a cable, maybe.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nothing stops this lock, August 19, 2011
By agraceffa
Fantastic lock and yes its heavy but do you want heft and security or speed and a lost bike? I wouldn't recommend traveling long distances with this lock but if you need a lock to secure your bike at the train station during the day (like I do) then this thing will do the trick. And then on the way home I loop it over my neck and under my arm (like an over the shoulder bag) and I'm on my way. The discomfort is more than made up by the piece of mind that no one will touch your lock. Oh, and you have a little extra defense for the ride home if necessary. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not messing around, August 12, 2011
By Griffin A. Williams
I bought this lock for a pedicab that I ride around so the normal weight considerations aren't too relevant for me (whats another ~10lbs when your bike weighs 100+?). The whole lock just feels SOLID. I feel safe leaving my cab just about anywhere now. I'm much more worried about vandals than thieves.

One thing, and perhaps this is done for security reasons, both arms of the U on the U-lock come out of the lock body (unlike other kryptonite u-locks where one side is locked and the other side is bent inside the body to keep it in place). It has taken some getting used to because (especially with the weight of the chain hanging on) sometimes you feel like you need a third hand to lock up your stuff.

Love the lighted key idea!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  May sell few to women, June 19, 2011
By knowlengr (NYC Metro)
As mentioned elsewhere, the approach in this design is to build hard, build heavy, and deter even determined thieves. In this the design succeeds very well. The tradeoff is weight. The overall device is fairly heavy -- at least wife insists she would never consider using it on her bike. I commute a modest distance of 10 blocks, so I don't mind hanging it on a shoulder and heading off. But it must be admitted that this is not a good tradeoff if you need fine balance or special agility for a sudden maneuver. For my money, the nuisance aspect of replacing even my modest bicycle setup is so high that I don't mind the extra mass. There may even be an fitness benefit, though I'm probably kidding myself there. And, yes, I do live in the greater metro NYC area so the product name is apt.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock!, June 15, 2011
By K. Wright (Dallas, Texas)
I recently had a bike stolen after only 6 days of ownership with a cable lock (yeah, I know, bad idea). Now I have this. No worries. It is big and heavy and the lock is a mini U Lock, which is great because the smaller the space in the U Lock, the better. Also, the key light is high quality.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  too heavy. disc lock is very difficult to unlock, June 3, 2011
By hija
bought a folding bike and had to buy this for its supposed anti theft features but although reviews said that the chain would be heavy it turned out to be really very heavy and defeated the purpose of having a lightweight bike. these locks alone could flatten my tires. kryptonite should make hard to cut locks that are not heavy anyways these locks cost much more than the average locks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Ultimate Security, November 27, 2009
By Jeffrey D. Baker (Vancouver BC)
This lock will deter any potential thief. There is no way anybody will be able to break through this lock without a cutting torch. The only drawback is its quite heavy, so don't buy it if you are planning on carrying it with you. Great for at home or at work.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  boooohhhhh!!!, July 11, 2011
By lliam
i hate this item. primarily because the key takes a few seconds of jiggling to unlock the lock. every time!! which is incredibly awkward because it is soooooo heavy. not practical at all. and it is a few inches short of being able to be worn around the shoulders so it has to be worn around the waist. maybe ideal for somebody else's use, but certainly not for mine.
