5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for bikes in the Ghetto., January 3, 2010
By GhettoCelebrity (Oakland)
This lock may in fact be perfect, but certainly not perfect for every one. I for example am a fairly large man who lives in Oaklands famous Killing Zone, where people hesitate to walk around at dusk and most windows have bars and bike theft is the mildest of concerns residents have. So for me carrying a 11lb chain is price worth paying to keep my bike safe, I also use it on my motorcycle.

This chain is a pain at first, it forces you to struggle up the huge hills in the bay area, though now I dare say im in phenomenal shape, and when I do ride with out it I feel superhuman.

If a smaller woman or lesser man tried to carry this chain then they had better take it slow and be ready to have their body crumble under the weight.

The choice for many people with expensive road bikes boils down to this.

1.Think about the endless quest to shave off 40 grams from your sweet Carbon fiber bike, you know the one you wont put stickers on because of weight issues.
2.Now think about doubling the overall weight of the bike and looking like a douche with a giant chain around their shoulder drapped across the even douchier spandex jersey.
2.Now think about your bike being stolen and traded amongst crackheads.
The choice is clear.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid lock, but too heavy, September 20, 2010
By Sachmo
No lock is 100% assured to keep your bike safe, but this is probably among the most difficult locks to break.

I bought this lock, after a relatively cheap $100 bike of mine got stolen. I used something like 10 mm thick stainless steel chain links paired with a heavy duty pad lock to secure my bike. I thought I'd save a little cash by making the lock from some materials at the local hardware store. Well I surmise from the fragments of chain left over that the thief probably used a blow-torch and power saw to cut through the stainless steel - lesson learned.

The heat treated steel in this lock would make it very difficult to cut through using the same approach. Difficult though not impossible. With a carbide saw, a willingness to dull the expensive blade cutting through this lock, and a fair amount of time it's still possible but much less likely for a thief to attempt to steal.

From a "keeping your bike safe" standpoint, I have no complaints about this lock whatsoever. It'll get the job done. Some other reviewers have complained about the keys, or about difficulty with the locking mechanism... I haven't noticed any problems with either.

The major con though is that this lock is really heavy. 10 lbs of heat treated steel was probably a bit of overkill. I'm extremely reluctant to take it with me for all but the shortest rides because of the weight.

The weight is clearly advertised, so the fault is mine, but nonetheless I'm looking at a few alternatives. They've made this lock in a 2 foot version which I'd recommend over this.

I'd also agree with some other reviewers by the way that the myriad restrictions on the warranty basically render their $3000 gaurentee (or whatever the particular amount is) meaningless.

***Update***

In my quest for a lighter locking solution I decided to get the Kryptonite Evolution Mini. It's a small, well designed U-lock that weighs about 2 pounds. Use it to lock the rear wheel and frame to a post.

For the front wheel, a lot of folks use cables... I actually think this is a mistake. Almost every cable lock on the market can be cut with a pair of shears in seconds. The most common sort of bike theft is sheared cables.

For the accessories I'm most likely going to get some Pitlock skewers. Google it, I think it offers more security than a secondary cable lock.

Some folks use 2 U-locks to lock up both wheels. This can work well too, but if you use the skewers you don't have to carry the extra weight.

For extended lock ups (4+ hrs) I'd still probably use this heavy beast of a chain, but grudgingly.

On the *very* rare occasion where I'd actually consider locking up the bike somewhere overnight, I'd use both the chain and the U-lock.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  WARNING--BIKES STOLEN USING THESE CHAINS, July 20, 2010
By regular guy (Chicago, IL)
Bike thief stole both mine and my wife's bikes while parked outside a Yoga studio in Chicago. They did so in just 60 minutes. Think this Kryptonite Chain is indestructible--forghettaboutit! Think that Kryptonite will honor their warrantee--forghettaboutit! Unless you're willing to spend all this money to protect a bike that you don't care about getting stolen--you'll have to look elsewhere for a secure lock. Wish I had a recommendation for you. I suspect that the thieves used either freon to freeze and break the lock or used a cordless saw to cut the U-lock. When we came out of the Yoga studio we were shocked to see 6 or 7 other bikes and not ours. The thieves (or thief) apparently had a method for defeating this particular lock and took the only two bikes that were secured using them.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Outstanding theft deterrent!, December 20, 2010
By Industrial Designer (Ronkonkoma, NY United States)
This chain is formidable to say the least, but like other reviewers have written, use a U-lock with this for the best theft deterrent. It's entertaining just to see from a distance how passers-by try to comprehend this (conspicuous) monster dwarfing your bike.

I celebrate the uncompromising strength and oppressive weight of this chain and lock, but the heft maybe too much for some to bear; It's the closest thing to carrying a pillowcase filled with old doorknobs you can get, and about as scary too...

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Take That, Thieves!, October 30, 2010
By Okemos
I bought this chain and lock for a Yamaha Zuma scooter. I checked it out beforehand and made sure the lock is the new type that can't be opened with a Bic pen. So no worries there. This chain is beefy and and lock, which you want for a $2,000 scooter. I also bought the Kryptonite U lock and the Xena disc lock. With these three locks there is no situation that I encounter in which I cannot safely secure my scooter. I spent about $185 total.

Just so you know, I wrap the Kryptonite chain around the floor board of the scooter. There is enough room for the chain to wrap completely around and then the small end slips through the large ring on the other end. I then can use the lock that comes with the chain to secure the end to the U lock that I also bought. The U lock can go around a bike rack or a post. A thief would have to cut my scooter in half to steal it, or find a way to cut through the chain or U lock.

For securing the scooter overnight at my residence (I have no garage), I sank a U shaped piece of rebar in concrete. Just the top loop of the rebar is visible, and no one is going to pull that out. So I secure the scooter to that. The Xena disc lock is an added measure of security. If anyone jostles the scooter, they will set off the Xena alarm, which will blister your ears, my friend.

No one is getting my scooter. Nope. No way.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock....when it actually unlocks, September 12, 2010
By M. Dampier
Purchased lock for moderate to high crime areas. Chain is heavy (about 10 lbs) but provides peace of mind. Is great length for locking up entire bike (tested on 19" MTB with 26" rims). When there is a skinny pole that sits next to your seat tube lock can be used to wrap/noose around seat tube, pole, and rear wheel and then reaches all the way up to the front wheel for locking. If locking to a rack where you can't get a pole next to your seat tube you'll have to take your front tire off to secure everything. Only complaint is that the locking mechanism/keys don't work well. I could only get the lock to open half the time or less. I tried many different remedies, making sure there was no tension on the lock, moderate tension, neutral position, etc. I would have to remove and re-insert key multiple times to get it unlocked and could take literally up to a minute to get it to open with the correct key. (And I tried all three keys). Not sure if this is a problem with all series 4 or if I just had a defective lock/key.

Bottom line: lock is great for security, extremely heavy so be prepared to find a system to carry it, but because I couldn't get the key/lock to function properly it's not a practical lock.

***Update***
Lock was indeed defective. Purchase same lock except in the 2'4" setup and lock works beautifully. Opens easily with key every time. After having the shorter version I rate the 4 foot version about 3.5 stars out of 5. It is a good lock, just heavy and if you are trying to wrap it through your tires it can be difficult to lock your bike up quickly. If you want a quick and secure lock up solution I'd go with the shorter version of this type of lock/chain and a u-lock.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  A chain (and lock) is only as good as the weakest link, October 3, 2009
By T. Newman
I just received the following product:
Kryptonite New York Noose 1213 Chain Bicycle Lock with Evolution Series 4 Disc Lock Chain Bicycle Lock (4-Foot x 3-Inch)
Although the chain and lock are sturdy the keys seem to be made of extremely soft metal. Right out of the shipping container, I tried the lock with one of the keys and the key part broke off from the plastic stem that you put on a key chain. I did not force it. It broke off like butter. Thank goodness I was not on the trail. Kryptonite, are you listening? Quality control should not only apply to locks and chains! What Garbage in my own expensive lesson/opinion. . Hope it makes a good door stop.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  This has "go away" written all over it, December 16, 2009
By rocket nerd (Washington, DC)
I got this lock to use for two purposes:

1) locking up my 1980s cheapo road bike for an all-day stay by a DC metro station
2) locking up my "steal me" looking fancy road bike for short periods of time

Yes, it weighs a ton. Yes, it's kind of inconvenient to carry around. But when a bike thief looks at a rack of bikes and sees this thing, he's definitely going to spend his time messing with something else. As many have pointed out, a thief can ultimately break any lock - the key to security is deterrence, and this one will definitely deter someone looking for a quick job. The majority of thieves here in DC seem to favor the car screw jack approach to pop U-locks - that approach is impossible with this lock due to the size of the locking mechanism.

For me, the best way to carry this thing is bandoleer style. Be aware that putting it in a bag will pretty much crush anything in the bag, as well as make the bag super heavy. Putting the lock on is definitely a two-handed routine - need to get the pieces all in place...so this can be a bit of a pain if you're trying to hold a few things, etc.

Ultimately, this lock won me over for the peace of mind that it provides when I'm locked up with it. If you want yours to be the last bike messed with, this is a great choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  holy crap this chain is huge, June 9, 2009
By N. Thompson (USA)
This chain is smaller than the Fahgettaboudit, but it is still freakin huge. I use it to lock up my scooter and it looks downright intimidating. The lock is bright orange and the chain is a shiny gold, which should catch any potential thief's eye and hopefully make them consider another target.

The noose design of this chain is great... since the chain doesn't have to meet in the middle, you have a lot more freedom when locking up. It isn't as much of a problem with a bicycle, but for a motorcycle or scooter you need every extra inch you can get.

Please be aware that even this chain is NOT PERFECT PROTECTION. No lock or chain is cut-proof. It still helps a ton to keep your bike/scoot out of sight, and under a cover. That being said, this chain does give me peace of mind. I use it at home, where my scooter sits most of the time. Also keep in mind that the chain is HEAVY. I keep a different smaller chain with me when going to the store, etc. I have heard stories of scooters being stolen as someone heads into a grocery store for 5 minutes, but ANY chain should deter this. I mainly worry about mine being stolen at home, since that is where it sits 90% of the time and all throughout the night.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy massive chain & lock, January 20, 2009
By G. Powell (Seattle, WA USA)
This pile of chain and lock weighs in at over 8 lbs, so it's not something to carry around on a daily basis on a bicycle unless you really, really need it. I got mine to leave at work. Most folks are using cables and those U locks, and the cables are getting cut on a regular basis. The chain gives me a lot of different options for locking my bike up. The chain and lock are not totally unbreakable but like the old joke about outrunning a bear, I have the best lock in the bunch so it's less likely it will be my bike that gets picked on.

My only complaint is that the nylon sleeve started to unravel the day I got it. I've sewn it back up with some thread but my expectation is that I'm going to have to sew my own sleeves. Oh yeah when I do, I'll be making two of them, so I can use the lock easier to fold the chain back around and hook it together. (not the ring side, that's fine, the lock end, so that there are two independent loops.

Still though better than the 5ft chain as the noose makes it so the ends don't have to meet, makes it a bit more flexible for locking and slightly lighter.

just wanted to mention that on Kryptonite's website, the New York Noose chain has 10mm links, not 12.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Self-Defense 101, May 29, 2011
By J. Hunt (Raleigh, NC)
I originally ordered this lock to keep my wallet safely secured to my pants. After ruining 4 pairs of JNCO's I decided to brainstorm. What else could I use this multi-pound beast for? I hopped on my Vespa, Bernie, and v-lined for the local pharmacy to pick up my daily dose of Rolos and diet A&W, when I noticed a gangly group of majorities crowding the entry door. I needed my brainfood, so I revved my 50CC engine to intimidate them. Their music must have had them caught in a trance, so I beeped Bernie's horn to alert them once more. Nothing.

That's when I remembered and retrieved the Kryptonite New York Noose. You could smell the fear in their eyes. I swung the chain like a billy stick, approaching them calmly. They started coming at me one by one, but they were no match for the 10mm glowing golden circles of death. After a brief one minute routing I was greeted with thunderous applause from local patrons and the entire Walgreens staff. I was their hero.

This lock will rock your world, change your life, and sustain innocence in this treacherous, kleptomatic world. Buy this now. Stop searching. Stop looking on Craigslist, Google Shopping, and/or eBay, and buy this lock before I buy the entire stock and chain all that I love to immovable objects.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best I've ever had, June 25, 2009
By Wade McNary (Fort Lauderdale)
This lock is intimidating, indestructible, and easy to use. I keep the noose locked to a pole in my apartment building's garage and lock my motorcycle with it when I'm parked. I intend to use the padlock part as a brake lock, but haven't yet.

Item is as tough as described, but beware the dimensions on Amazon. The box it comes in says 10.8lbs NOT 6.8lbs. I was hoping to get a lighter chain lock and this was definitely not it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Peace of Mind, April 28, 2011
By Danners (ARLINGTON, VA, United States)
When the chain is secured to a stationary object then locked with the Disc Lock,I feel confident leaving my Vespa parked on the street. The chain is heavy but the noose-type chain allows security with a shorter chain. I wrap the chain around a pole, loop the chain through the noose end, pull tight, and lock it to the scoot using the Disc Lock. I'm rather certain that the looks of this set will make a would-be thief think twice.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice and secure!, April 22, 2012
By Mark Avery (BOSTON, MA, US)
I feel very safe leaving my Honda Ruckus locked up with this chain. I create a noose around a pipe/bike rack/street sign and then slide the lock through the rear wheel "rim". I'm also able to wrap the chain around the base of the seat when riding or traveling rather than having to carry it balled up together in a bag (it's pretty heavy). It is fairly short so it would be difficult to chain my moped up to anything that has a thick base (telephone pole, street light, etc.) but all in all I feel like I've purchased an insurance policy for around $75!
