About Mongoose
In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as Mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The first of its kind, the BMX bicycle was named after bicycle motocross and was designed to fit the needs of the rough-and-tumble dirt-racing pastime that took its toll on wheels and bicycles. The heavy-duty, one-piece cast-aluminum Mongoose Motomag wheel was soon born, and it was the first competition-ready BMX bicycle available. Skip Hess, while in Australia pursuing his motor sports passion, came into contact with a strange and unusual cat-size animal--the mongoose. Known for its passive nature while unprovoked, yet vicious and aggressive enough to kill a threatening Cobra twice its size, the Mongoose impressed Hess, who quickly registered the Mongoose trademark for his new bicycle racing frame.

The Expert BMX bicycle model, which is still a cornerstone of the Mongoose BMX line today, was introduced in 1980. Shortly after, Mongoose captured the first ever ABA National #1 Cruiser Title. Previously known for the 20-inch bicycle, this title signaled the re-direction of Mongoose bicycles to larger-wheeled, adult-sized models. Several years later, Mongoose continues to dominate the cruiser racing circuit with six National No. 1 Cruiser titles, leading to the introduction of adult-sized Mongoose all-terrain bicycles (ATBs).

In 1992, Mongoose pioneered the full-suspension market with the introduction of the Amplifier. This design is still the most-copied suspension design in the market. Several year later, Mongoose launched the Newman adult bicycle frame, which is proven to be 15% stronger than any other bike frame in the market. The design, while functionally sound, also raised eyebrows because of its distinctive look.

In the next few years, Mongoose increased its marketing focus to dominate the bicycle industry, and more important, extend beyond it. The Mongoose brand marketing initiative makes more than 100 million impressions. Mongoose?s brand awareness increased by over 130% in 1999 and solidifies the No. 2 market share position in units and dollars. Mongoose was acquired by Pacific Cycle, LLC, and continues to grow and prosper with more than 40 models of BMX, mountain, trail, freestyle, jumping, comfort, road, and cyclocross bikes.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Reviewing the Bike, not the shipping- Excellent First Bike, December 20, 2009
By Mama1011
First, I'd like to urge fellow reviewers to rate products based on the product, not on the seller, price, or shipping. Each of those problems can be addressed within the review or to the specific party involved, but it tells nothing about the product and giving a rating considering these factors doesn't give an accurate account of the ITEM, which is what the rating is supposed to address. That being said, i bought this bike for my 4 year old. It doesn't come with a kickstand, which isn't a big deal at the present because she needs the training wheels. Kickstands are easy to find, but I would prefer having one in the box. The bike is beautiful and durable. It was fairly easy to assemble and like all children's bikes, it is a bit hefty with a shipping weight of 30 pounds. A bike for a 3-6 year favors sturdiness over speed. My daughter loves it. I will agree with other reviewers about the hand brake (caliper) being stiff and difficult for a child to operate. Overall, I would recommend this bike to the value conscious parent and especially those tired of pink. The details are perfectly girly without being frilly and make this bike stand out and up long after "bratz," "barbie," "my little pony," and "princess" bikes lose their appeal.

About Shipping: I bought this bike from Amazon and, admittedly, I made them send a replacement because the first bike was scratched and dirty. the box looked as if it had been thrown from plane, train, and truck. I gave Amazon a bit of a tongue lashing concerning the condition in which a child's product, excuse me, any product, should be shipped in to maintain a buyer's loyalty. In the end, problem solved. My review is not colored by price or shipping issues because neither is directly attributable to the product itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Mongoose Pizazz Girl's bike, April 3, 2009
By Brian Tomes (USA)
The bike is very durable, easy to maneuver, and to assemble. The only flaws I find is that the hand brake is extremely hard to squeeze (I'm her dad and it takes a lot of effort for me!). The default pedal brakes are sufficient and my 5 year old quickly figured out how to brake by reversing the direction of her peddling. The other downside is its weight. I'd say easily 50 pounds of solid metal which is about the same weight of my adult graphite bike. But again, you are getting something very durable.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Believe the reviews,do not buy this bike on-line!, June 16, 2010
By izzyforeal365 (Rockville, MD)
Everyone reading this is trying to do something special for a child. The truth is, you are only delaying your ideal by purchasing this bike on-line.

I read the reviews and thought "the reviewers aren't capable of figuring basic things out and whining about shipping boxes. It's the materials that count!"

Materials do count and ours drastically didn't fit! The front fork of the bike would not fit on the front tire axle. It wasn't even close by over an inch! Shame on those sending a pile of parts that could never equal an assembled bike. What's worse, is that I thought that I was smarter and more capable than those other reviewers to whom I slurred while waiting for delivery.

One day before our daughters' birthday, the bike parts arrived. I rushed home with anticipation, and now want to share my dissappointing experiemce with anyone who also thinks a bike is something you should buy on-line. The directions were embarrassingly not helpful and we accomplished all but the front perfectly within 30 minutes....... but...

Note: I did not seek this link out to lodge a complaint.
Amazon wrote to my wife for her review and now I'm typing away to warn you... step away from the BUY ME button!!!!!

The good news? Our money was returned promptly once parts were received back. I guess they knew...

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Mongoose Pizazz 16" of poor quality, December 27, 2010
By drawn by hand
I had ordered this bike for X-mas and it was delivered very fast. Box was not sealed anymore and when I pulled it all out it had minor scratched plus I found no instructions. Instructions or lack thereof were not a problem for me as I assembled it in about 20 minutes. The problem is the materials used in the bike itself.

Warning: NEVER purchase a bike with plastic rims. I had not caught that when I ordered it. The plastic rims were warped making the back wheel stick to the handbrake pad and lock up. Now if it was hard for me to get the wheel rotating, how would a 4 year old be able to do it. The back wheel was already affixed right out of the box (crooked I might add). No adjusting would be able to make it work due to the warping of the plastic.

Back it goes. A real shame as it's very cute but a company shouldn't cheap out on one of the most important parts. Please make sure you get alloy rims.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Avoid this seller, December 24, 2008
By crazy4amazon (Jacksonville, Florida)
The bike was delivered in a box that was almost destroyed with big holes in it and tape barely holding it together. The bike itself was delivered with dirty handlebars, dents in the frame and missing parts for the hand brake. The back wheel was factory tightened out of alignment with the chain binding up when you crank the pedals. Part of the chainguard was rusted and appears to have been painted over to hide it. I have an above average skill level in mechanical items such as bikes, and if not for that, I would have not been able to give this bike to my daughter for Christmas morning. If you know how to disassemble and reassemble a bike and have extra parts in the garage or shed, you can have a ridable bike in about an hour. If you cannot, stay away from this product, as you will be extremely frustrated and probably end up returning it. The instructions are general instruction for other bikes and not specific to this bike either, so if you need instructions, you should not attempt to assemble this bike.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor Quality, December 21, 2009
By Michael (Arlington, VA)
The bike arrived very quickly but was damaged. The box was torn up and had a hole in it. After removing the contents from the box assembly was difficult. The manual included was not for the bike being assembled they were fro generic Mongoose bikes and offered little help. Finally, after many hours trying to align the rear wheel I realized it was not out of alignment but was not balanced. It is a plastic rim so it was hard to tell, but the rim was warped. So I am returning the bike and purchasing one from a local store pre-assembled.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bike!, October 1, 2009
By M. Goldman (St. Cloud, MN)
We purchased this bike for my daughter's 3rd birthday. It is an adorable bike. My husband assembeled it in well under a half an hour. The only thing I don't like about it is the hand brake. I wish it didn't have one.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Shipped HORRIBLY, January 9, 2010
By B. Pagliardini (Florida, USA)
The product itself is good--a nice sturdy bike, weighs more than 30 pounds, and I like that for my new rider. However, it was a christmas gift and came shipped in it's original box! No precautions whatsoever on shipping it carefully...(looked like it was pulled from a target shelf, someone stuck a mailing label on it, and wished it godspeed.) Came all ripped open and re-closed with packing tape...at least someone at UPS felt bad for this bike and tried to do something about it. I had read this in earlier reviews and thought it was something that wouldn't really happen to everyone...but alas!! It did! And I'm lucky my daughter didn't see the box sitting at the door--because it was a big old picture of the BIKE! What kind of service is this? I probably will not order from amazon again based on this shipping problem. There were some scratches on the bike itself, but not to affect usage (or asthetics) and I figure once she starts riding she'll lay it down and scratch it up anyway. Was not worth sending back and getting ANOTHER one just like it. 1 star for amazon shipping; but 4 stars for the bike itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bike with the right touch of "girly", September 11, 2009
By SpecOpsSpouse (Okinawa Japan)
This is a great quality bike for the price and has taken some heavy abuse from our 4 year old daughter. I love that the handle bar height and angle, seat height and training wheels can all be adjusted for a perfect fit today and in the coming years. We especially love the color combination since it can be so hard to buy anything for little girls that is not pink!

We purchased this item from Amazon and not an authorized seller and selected super saver shipping. It arrived in 3 days from FedEx, but there was some damage to the box. No major injuries to the bike, but some of the stickers were heavily scratched.

Overall, we are very happy with this purchase. It is a good quality bike that will last for years.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great kids bike., June 29, 2009

This bike is great. My daughter loved it. If it came with a bell and streamers it would have been perfect! The directions and assembly left a little to be desired but nothing huge.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  The worst assembly ever, December 27, 2009
By J. Baeza
This is a very cute bike with the WORST ASSEMBLY PROBLEMS EVER!!! I ordered a different bike for my other daughter that we put together in 20 minutes. This took over an hour and a half and required bending of the bike to make the front wheels fit. The assembly instructions were unclear at best. I would NOT recommend this bike for anyone. You can get a bike just as good without the headache.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Little disappointed, December 6, 2009
By A mom of 2 (San Jose, CA)
The bike's quality is fabulous. My daughter is 5 and the bike is a little heavy for her right now but it is a great bike to grow into.

I was very disappointed with the shipment. Packaging was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE, the item was poorly wrapped inside. The package was all torn up by the time the it arrived and the bike has several scratches due to that reason. Normally, we would return the item in that kind of condition, but because our daughter was so excited about her new bike that we did not want to disappoint her.

So, unless you can make sure that the bike will arrive in the condition that YOU WOULD LIKE. Go to the local store.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great 1st Bike, November 28, 2011
By C. Beach (Chas, SC, US)
The Mongoose Pizazz is a great 1st or even 2nd bike as long as it's assembled properly. The same goes for most bikes, really. For example, if the tire nuts are overtightened, the handbrakes aren't adjusted or installed correctly, etc...Overall this bike has held up well for my daughter for the last 3 yrs. It's pretty solid & sturdy.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  mediocre but accomplishes its purpose, November 14, 2011
By wiz981 (New York, NY United States)
This is a reasonable facsimile of a bike. i bought it for my 4 year old daughter so i do not anticipate heavy duty use from it, fingers crossed. i remember mongoose from growing up as an excellent BMX brand, in fact my brothers mongoose dirt bike from the mid 80s still exists and was a quality product. this, not so sure. to lend credence and statistical power to prior reviews: 1) the front wheel did not fit on to the fork. i had to go to a local bike store to force it on. probably, the fork got bent in transit. 2) the hand brake is pointless. too stiffly calibrated, made of plastic, probably doesnt stop the bike anyway. the pedal brake works though. 3) the instructions (i did receive a copy) are vague, as they are generalized for probably a few different bikes ("attach the quick release wheel unless the wheel is not quick release in which case bolt it on").

i will say that my daughter loves it. i hope to get her through the next couple of years, and after that maybe get her a real bike.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Mongoose Pizazz, October 26, 2011
By Mom
I got this bike last year for my daughter for Christmas. It's a decent bike and overal I am satisfied with the product. There was an error with the parts I received - I got 2 bike seats and no training wheel. Instead of dealing with that we just taught her how to ride without training wheels so it worked out BUT there was no kickstand included so the bike as sustained damage from being dropped from my child. We adjusted the seat as she grew and it would never stay in the same spot and same with the handle bars. The bag on the front ripped off almost immediately. The bike looks good and my daughter enjoyed this until she outgrew it so it's a decent bike but you could find better for the price. I expected more from the Mongoose brand.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  16" girls mongoose bike blue and purple, December 3, 2010
By Tiffany D. Smith (lake havasu , AZ)
This is a beautiful bike! The blue is like a pearl sky blue and purple mag wheels- the amazon picture does not do it justice! Totally killer color combination! Bike put together easily in about 20 min. and is very sturdy and appearrs to be well made- maybe a step up from what we have previously purchased from walmart or kmart. We chose this because my daught wanted a purple bike for christmas and all we could find locally was pink and way to many princess bikes. This one fit the bill! the amply sturdy box was shipped to us and arrived in satisfactory normal shipping scuffs condition but I think for some of the other purchasers the shipping carrier beat up the box pretty good. I would hope you don't base your purchasing decision based on others bad shipping experiences as you could have a bad shipping experience with any purchase. This is a beautiful girls bike and we are very happy with this purchase!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice little bike; Problem with shipper, December 14, 2009
By tdb (Atlanta, GA United States)
We just received this Mongoose Pizazz for our 3 year old. Despite the reviews about terrible shipping, I ordered because the price is right and I feel good about the Mongoose product. I held my breath. Sure enough, the package arrived ripped to shreds, no padding. Luckily, the bike itself seems to have made it through intact.

Looking forward to setting it up, though I don't anticipate any problems. Will update my review if there's more to report.

I wish Amazon would heed the problems with shipment of this product and remedy the matter. You're definitely taking your chances with shipping if you order this bike.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not Sure Yet, October 18, 2009
By MH (ATL)
We just received this yesterday and the box it was delivered in was completely torn up; re-taped several times. I checked the contents to make sure we received everything and it was missing the bag attachment. I am very disappointed with this order so far. It was shipped directly from Amazon so they should have known better than to send it out the door. This is supposed to be a Christmas present for one of my children and I indicated on the order that it was a gift. The delivery company simply "dumped" this on my porch with the damaged box showing the complete picture of the item ordered along with a bicycle handlebar sticking out. I have not put this bike together yet but plan to this week so I have time to return it if it is damaged. I should have heeded the warning from another review that said the same thing I am saying. I would not recommend purchasing this item through Amazon since you can get it through a local reseller and don't have to deal with the return process with Amazon shipping. Mongoose Pizazz Girls' Bike (16-Inch Wheels)
