4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good bike overall, July 23, 2009
By Frisbee (South Carolina, USA)
Overall, this is a good bike for the money. It is a bit on the heavy side for a road bike, but better that than being too flimsy. The bike is easy to put together if you have at least half a brain and works great with only a minor tune up. The one thing I didn't like about assembly was that apparently an impact wrench was used at the factory to attach the wheels, making them near impossible to get off without using an impact wrench. Other than that though, no problems. The bike rides well and shifts precisely after the cables have been set. One thing to note though, a standard size bike water bottle is too big to fit where the cage attaches. Also, the bars are the size used on mountain bikes, so road bike accessories won't fit. Overall though, I would say this is an excellent beginners road bike. Once the seat was replaced, no extra parts were needed to make it ride great. It is a great bike to get into cycling without spending a lot of money.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  You are getting a frame ONLY, August 24, 2009
By Bunny (Chesapeake Beach MD United States)
I headed the advice from previous buyers and bought this bike with the idea that I might receive a damaged product. I did. The front and back rims are bent, the gears came 50% assembled and had no instruction on how to complete assembly, the bike comes without a single quick disconnect on anything, the derailleur has miscellaneous plastic parts, and the brakes and shifters are junk. The way I look at it, I bought a frame for $170 and will have to buy everything else separately. This bike out of the box is unrideable and unsafe. Do not expect to hop on this one right away. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to get into road racing and you do not want to assemble your bike from the ground up; spend more and buy something with more quality from top to bottom.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  IT'S A KEEPER, May 10, 2011
By TAS
My first bike was returned due to damage incurred from poor manufacturer packaging, but a replacement was delivered within 2 days. I was very impressed with the quality customer service team at Amazon! They were friendly and solved the problem quickly. The replacement bike arrived with similar damage, but it was not nearly as extensive as the first. Initially I planned to return it too until I weighed out all my options. And sadly, this bike - even with a ding - is still the best bargain available on the market.

The minimal assembly was a breeze and all it needed was adjustment to the front brake before I was able to take it on my Mother's Day test ride. I also purchased the Schwinn Ergonomic Saddle and swapped out the seat. The ride is smooth, the bike is relatively lightweight and very good looking. It will look even better after removing most of the decals 8-]

There simply are no women's step-through framed road bikes with drop handlebars anywhere on the market for under 200 bucks, and definitely none in white. The industry is really very discriminatory in regards to women's road bikes, but finding a man's is no problem...what color would you like? LOL

Ladies - all you need are scissors, an adjustable open-end wrench and a set of Allen wrenches to finish the assembly on this bike, as well as a tire pump. First, flip the bike over and install the front wheel. If the back of the tire touches the bike frame, the forks are facing backwards. Turn them around, make sure the cables are not twisted, install the wheel, then the handlebars, seat, pedals and bottle holder. Make sure the chain is in order and pump up the tires. There are directions for brake adjustment included.

I am now very pleased with my bicycle.
Thanks Amazon!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for the average road biker, January 30, 2010
By capnsteve (USA)
I use it for 12=15 mph rides on good country roads. Shifting is easy and even though the brakes are not top of the line, they work very well. I had it tuned up after I assembled it, to make sure I got the most out of this quality of bike parts. The shocks work well for a smooth ride, and the stock seat is not bad at all. I would recomend this bike to anyone that is not training for a real race.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Denali Review, August 31, 2009
By Melissa M. Hertle
I bought this bike to do my first sprint triathlon. Of course it is not as good as most of the $1000 bikes that the rest of the riders had, but it was a great beginner bike. After a quick tune-up it has ridden perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't let the price fool you!, April 11, 2011
By aburton3
This is an awesome bike. It definitely beats out the more expensive competition. The seat is comfortable, the Shimano shifters are outstanding, the brakes may be a little weak, but they stop the bike and that's all I can expect. It is more than capable of outrunning anyone. It takes little effort to get the speed up and even less effort to keep it going. I love my bike. I also love Amazon. The 1st bike I received had a bent front rim. I notified Amazon and before I knew it they had another bike shipped out to me. In less than 18 hrs. I had received my replacement bike at no extra cost. Talk about customer service? Amazon is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome Bike, March 19, 2011
By M Cat
This bike is great! I have had it for almost a year and it has been everything I wanted and more! I am only 5' 4" and the frame fits me well. Prior to purchase, I had my local bike shop check the size, and had it shipped there for assembly. They also fit the bike for me. Perfect for riding around town, and smooth for long rides.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bike!, December 28, 2010
By Michelle
I wanted to start riding but didn't know anything about bikes. I read the reviews on the Women's Denali and thought that this bike would be a great price for a beginner. I took my husband's and my bike to a bike shop to make adjustments and the bike expertise at the shop said that the bikes are great bikes to begin with. We definitely got our monies worth out of it. They are sturdy and are comfortable. We got different seats for them. I'm 5'0 tall and the Women's Denali is a perfect height for me. It is easy to put together, but I would take it to a bike shop to make sure you have it properly adjusted for safety. Other than that, the bike fits for our family when we go on Saturday morning rides.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love this bike, December 8, 2010
By BookReader (New York, NY)
This is the first road bike I've ever owned so can't really compare it others but what I can say is that I love this bike. I've only been riding for a few days but can't complain about anything. It is very good looking and rides very smooth. Little exertion is needed to push it and in my opinion it goes very fast. I rode a friend's much larger and more expensive road bike and can't really find a difference.

I was worried about buying a bike online without really seeing it for myself and trying it out and also worried about not buying the "right" bike but now I'm happy I did. Great bike!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Serious toe/pedal overlap, August 26, 2009
By T. Hoover
The Biggest Con: This bike has an extremely short frame, which helps cause toe-overlap, and quite honestly the bike really has "pedal-overlap". Simply turning the wheel causes the pedal to hit and that's with no one on the bike. Go on a ride and pretty much it's half your foot overlap. I'm only 5'5", so not too lanky for this short frame. Sure toe-overlap is common on road bikes, but this is pretty extreme by any standard.

If you are a beginner trying to get a road bike, save your money for something better. Sorry but this one is scary and dangerous for a novice or pro.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not sure if I would purchase again, June 5, 2009
By T Rose
When I recieved the bike, it was scratched, and came with the wrong owners manual. I am not sure that the bike was really new, although when I called Amazon, I was told it was (as did the site when I purchased the bike). It is a good bike for the money, rides well, especially for a beginner or some who does not ride daily. The bike itself is a good bike, I think it was just my experience in recieving it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good bike for the money, May 5, 2010
By Diana Silva
I bought this bike to replace a more expensive one which was stolen, and because I am entering my first sprint triathlon this summer. Its a good bike, was realively easy to assemble with a few allen wrenches and an ajustable wrench, took me about 30 minutes. The gears are relatively smooth, skipped a bit at first, but that's probably normal on a new bike. All in all, good value.

This bike says 20" on Amazon, 21" on the box. Bought this bike for a 4'9" woman, at best this is a 24" bike more like 26". I have 4 24" and 26" bikes in my garage this bike is as tall as the rest. Unless there is a new math that I dont know about there is know way this is a 20" bike!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product for the price, June 13, 2011
By KRiedel
Considering road bike options available for women, this is an EXCELLENT starting price point option. Went together fairly easily. Brakes are kind of difficult to get to for small hands (from the top). Gears have been a little funky and need adjusting periodically, and if you pedal with the middle of your foot, instead of the ball, your toe overhang hits the tire when you turn corners (more of a technique adjustment; I think you're suppose to be pedaling with the ball of your foot). But considering the price I believe this to be an excellent option.

One other thing to consider; though the funky curved bar LOOKS great, it's not real practical for bike racks or accessories. We were able to get the bike on our bike rack but with one end underneath the loading bar...which didn't seem real safe, so we had to reinforce with a bungee. Again, not a reason NOT to purchase, just be advised. I bought a pouch for holding my cell phone that is suppose to attach to both the top frame bar and base of handle bars, but again; didn't fit there because of that curve. Had to move it to underneath seat. Just be aware the curve may present some obstacles.

Size wise; I am 5'5 1/2". I am suppose to have a 52cm frame; this is a 50cm frame. It does seem a little smaller than I think I should have for my height, but for a beginner/opening price point option; it is suffice. Definately need to purchase a gel seat! I really do think it is an excellent product for the price. I couldn't find anything at my local bike shops for under $600. I just wanted something for some sprint triathalon's I am doing this summer. If I find out I love doing them and sign up for several more next year, it's possible I would invest in a better bike. For now, it's serves it's purpose perfectly (and it looks good!)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for the price but a little damaged..., August 15, 2009
By Timothy P. Clayton
Good product for the price. The price beat Dick's Sporting Goods. However, it came a little damaged and forced me to have it tuned up which made up for the difference in price from Dick's. Plus I have no warranty like I would've at Dick's. So, you may want to consider looking there.

Spent a long time putting this bike together only to find out I had to invest more money since the tubes for the wheels came split. SO all in all the bike was over $50 more than I originally spent.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Very poor packaging, May 2, 2011
By Tee
I ordered this bike on Friday, it was delivered on Monday - I was shocked by the speedy delivery. But not nearly as shocked as I was when I saw how poorly it was packaged by the manufacturer - with no concern at all on what condition the product will arrive in upon delivery! Unbelievable.

The bike frame was wrapped in thin cardboard with tape as well as thin wrapping foam, and all the parts were zip-tied to each other and then placed in a cardboard box with no other protection provided - except for some plastic caps over the hubs and other prortuding parts. There was no Styrofoam inserts anywhere in the box to prevent it from being crushed!

The box arrived with a big gouge on the side that someone had need covered with tape to keep the parts from falling out. I can only assume the shippers did this as a form of damage control. Originally I thought the bike was fine until I noticed the damage on the large tube where the big Denali name is. The impact to the bike was hard enough to not only damage the decal and chip the paint off, it actually put a small gouge in the aluminum frame itself.

I want my new bike to look new, and I want to be happy with my purchase, so most likely I will return it. I'm very angry with the manufacturer for being so blatantly careless with their products - and they expect us to pay good money for them.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great 1st road bike, August 23, 2010
By agent007
Bought this bike to go in my 1st triathlon..it did not disappoint me. Even though the triathlon was not an official one...I rode for the first time on this bike the day of the triathlon ,it was comfortable, I only shifted between 3 gears ..the ride was smooth. I look forward to more smooth rides. Also, my husband put the bike together & had no problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  One of a kind bike!, May 15, 2012
By elnelson
My wife wants to start cycling for fitness, but we are not ready nor financially committed to purchase a $1000.00 road bike. My wife likes the step-through frame. This was the only entry-level, step-through, women's road bike I could find! The bike arrived on time and in perfect shape, no shipping damage that I have read about from other reviewers. A bit miffed that the shifters are not the ones described on Amazon's web site. They are Grip-Shifts, not Revo-Shifts. Probably makes no difference. The bike was easy enough to assemble, but not easy to get the derailleurs working just right. The front derailleur was rubbing on the chain guard when placed in the upper gear, and when I adjusted it to stop that, I could not get it to shift precisely. A quick trip to a local bike shop and nine dollars fixed that. I miss the brake levers on classic ten-speeds (that what we used to call this style of bike back in the day! I guess when they started adding speeds they had to come up with a different name.) that allow you to use the brakes in both upright and racing position. This bike lacks those, but so does every other road bike on the market. According to the bike shop guy, you can't even get those levers any more. The main differences between this bike and the $1000.00+ bikes are weight and component quality. For $200.00, I am not going to be upset about a few pounds more. The components work, and that is all we really need. I had purchased my wife a comfort bike previously, and she had complained about the upright position and the fact that she could not go very fast. She is experiencing a bit of a shock at the crouched-over position of this bike, especially when she needs to brake. She is finding it difficult to go from upright where the shifters are to the lower position where the brakes are. This is a minor inconvenience and she'll get used to it quickly. Overall, I am thankful there was a bike on the market that fit our needs. I would recommend this bike to anyone looking for an entry-level women's road bike and doesn't want to spend a fortune. I think that most users of this bike will need to take it to a bike shop to get the derailleurs working right, but once that happens, it is smooth sailing. My only worry is that the bottom-bracket is not sealed. It is relatively easy to get a sealed bottom bracket installed. I don't think my wife will be doing much riding in the rain, but if she does and it starts grinding, that's what we'll do.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for the entry level road bike, April 23, 2012
By Rachel Mays
--Update: Two months after purchase (and a few hundred miles on this bike), I have decided that it just isn't going to cut it. While I will still say this bike is worlds above a cheap mountain bike and has really given me the "biking bug"- I constantly have gear and brake problems, even after taking it to the shop. I get it fixed and a week later it has problems again. I have decided to buckle down and buy a "real" road bike. If you want something for casual riding or to just play with a road type bike, then sure go ahead and buy this bike. If you really aspire to doing longer rides/ having a true hobby out of biking, get something else.

I received this bike about 2 months ago and have ridden it quite a few times since then. I commute around 5 miles to and from work. When I originally purchased the bike, I was a little worried because of the mixed reviews that were out there. However, most road bike prices were way out of my range. I had a cheap mountain bike, and while it worked, riding to work was a pain. So much of a pain I tended to walk half the way- hills were impossible. It took me almost as long on my mountain bike to get to work as it did to walk. Now, it takes me half the time. This was instant- not after getting in better shape. This bike is quite fast (to me anyways) and handles hill superbly. I live in Georgia and regardless of my route, hills are just part of the package here. This bike has truly renewed my interest in biking, and I would buy it again. Now, for the good and the bad.

Negatives:
1. When I first received the bike, previous reviewers are correct, the packing was horrible. There was little to nothing to keep the bike from getting damaged in shipping. However, mine turned out to be fine.

2. One of the tires was extremely hard to get aired up. I thought that there was a problem, but we finally were able to get it aired up.

3. Specific tools are needed to get the bike in good working condition. While my husband put the bike together and it 'worked', I ended up taking it to a bike shop. I highly recommend taking it to a bike shop- even if you want to put it together yourself- just for tuning purposes. As previous reviewers attested to, the brakes seemed horrible when the bike was first put together regardless of what my husband tried to do. After taking to the the bike shop for about 10 minutes (they did not replace anything), they work perfectly. I do believe this bike is just a little harder to tune up than most, but the components do work well.

4. When asking about possibly adding another set of brakes to the bars, the local bike shop said it would be quite costly- if even doable- and that they would likely have to change out the bars and gears. They did not say anything bad about the bike (as most probably would), but rather that these bikes are made to be ridden as they are and modifications are just hard to make to them.

Positives:
1. Quite fast. Easy to pick up speed.

2. Great on hills. In one of the lowest gears, even the most horrible hills are doable.

3. Shifts well (once tuned), even if the grip shifters take a little getting used to.

4. It does seem quite sturdy. I have hit some pretty bad potholes when riding on the sidewalk and it took them like a champ.

5. Is actually pretty comfortable once you get used to the position.

Recommendations:

1. First and foremost- take it to a bike shop for a tune up or to put it together.
2. Buy another seat. I put on the "Sunlite Cloud-9, Bicycle Suspension Comfort Saddle, Comfort Gel Ladies, Tri-Color Lycra" and it has truly saved my butt.
3. If you aren't used to a road bike, spend some time getting used to it before going somewhere traffic could be.

This bike is awesome! I use it for getting around my college campus/ town, and it's perfect. The gears work great on the few hills we have around here, and I love how effortless it is to go fast. At 5'5", the bike fits me perfect. Overall, the best bike I've owned. :)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  you get what you pay for, March 21, 2011
By brian
I purchased this bike for my fiancée about a month ago. out of the box didn't require much assembly. went together easy enough. first problem i noticed was a warped crankset. makes adjusting the front derailleur a pain. not to mention the poor quality of the front derailleur, don't expect quality shifting, expect a poped chain, missed shifts and just all around noise. the water bottle cage is a joke, she has to fight to get a bottle out and in which makes drinking while cycling impossible. all that being said the bike is doing the job it was bought for. its ride able, it was a low dollar item for her to decide her interest in the sport entry level is all this bike should be used for. long distance riding may be a pain due to the poor mechanics of the bike. would i recommend this bike? yes if your purpose is the same as mine, just using it as a stepping stone

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Change the brakes not just the pads!, September 14, 2010
By vince lau (foster city, ca United States)
The wife nearly crashed going down the hill at Sausalito in California. So nothing else needs to said about the need for better brakes. I had given her my brake pads already but they still fail/faded.

As noted on forCycling, the GMC Denali road bike came with crappy single pivot brakes. The bike is not blazing fast but the brakes just don't work well.

I found the Tektro r736 brake on ebay for around $30 bucks. The ""reach"" was the right on with the denali's reach being around 53mm. These are Tektro's top of the line brakes and I think they are found on $1000+ bikes. Even my Fuji only came with R320 brakes (2 models down).

Anyhow, little did she know that she was sure gonna stop. And stop she did, she said she almost fell off the bike the first time she used the new brakes!

Here's my link for how to install the brakes since you need to drill them.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent at best bike, July 20, 2010
By sf biker
The GMC Denali is a decent at best starter bike. My family also has the men's version of this bike and both bikes use almost the exact same components. However, if I were to do it again, I would not have purchased the women's bike. When i bought the bike, it was $200, now there is a price drop to $174 and forCycling will not give me a price match. In addition, the front inter tube came punctured. I believe the bike should be accurately be labeled a hybrid bike as oppose to a road bike. The frame is rather heavy, the tires are wider then that of a traditional road bike, the gears are like that of a mountain bike, and it also has grip shifters. From a distance the bike does look attractive. While some people may complain that this bike won't last long, i believe that this bike will make a decent starter bike to cruise around for a few hundred miles in.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great beginner bike, June 8, 2010

I originally bought this bike for a sprint triathlon I'm competing in at the end of July...Looking for a less expensive bike to get started in case I don't keep up with triathlons in the future...However, after training on this bike, I'm really starting to enjoy it! Some advice: Take it to a bike shop and have them put it together for you..This will save you sooo much time and headache if you are inexperienced in bike assembly...My bike shop is great Had it put together and tuned up in less than an hour! Also, the gear shifts are too high on the handlebars Not near the brakes where a road bike's gears would normally be. Remember this bike is what it is: a beginner's road bike...Don't expect the performance of a much more expensive bike out of this one

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Product description is either wrong or I did not receive the right parts!, May 15, 2012
By landersjc (Miami, Florida)
I just received my bike today after reading the description of the bike thinking I was getting Shimano derailers (front/rear) as well as Shimano Revo shifters. This was all spelled out in the bike description (see below):

GMC Denali Women's Road Bike (20"/50cm Frame)
Front Derailleur: Shimano FD-TZ 31 Index
Rear Derailleur: Shimano RD-TZ30GS 7SPD
Shifters: Shimano Revo SIS L2/R7GMC Denali Women's Road Bike (20"/50cm Frame)

However, upon inspecting the parts it is apparent that in fact there are Shimano derailers as mentioned, however, the shifters are SRAM shifters. There was no mention what-so-ever about SRAM shifters in the description on Amazon. I am hoping that these two components are compatible over long periods of time as I thought I was getting Shimano quality and compatibility in all of these parts. If anyone else has experienced this please let me know so I know that I didn't simply get the wrong shifters with my bike. Thank you! Highly disappointed in the description if these SRAM are in fact what are supposed to be on the bike!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for the price, May 15, 2012
By mwall
Bought this as a gift for my girlfriend. It was very easy to assemble, all you need is a few hand tools. One downfall of this bike is the weight, it is pretty heavy for a womens bike.

But after a tune it up, it rides like a champ and seems solid. We will see if it holds up.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I like it, May 2, 2012

I couldn't find what I was looking for in-store (for the price I wanted to pay) so I found this bike online and took a chance. Assembling the bike can be confusing when the manual is not for the specific bicycle. For example, this bike does not have a easy on/off removable front wheel for transporting (although the manual states it does so you might think you're missing a piece). Overall it has the features I was looking for, its more of a hybrid than a road bike. I love the slick tires vs a knobby mountain bike tire, but the frame is more sturdy than a road bike. Its SUPER light! I can carry it up & down the stairs not a problem! I'm 5'5 and I found the size to be comfortable. My only complaint is the location of the brakes, I wish there was a brake lever at the top of the handlebars for ease of use.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good deal, December 4, 2011
By J.R..
This was a good deal. It arrived on time, and in decent condition. The only problem we had was that the frame had a small dent, and took more effort to assemble than was advertised. The dent may have been due to the packaging though. Otherwise, the bike was in perfect condition, the right size, the right color, pretty much what Amazon claimed what it would be in their ad.
