Sizing and Review on Bell Fraction Helmets, May 9, 2011
By Anne J. Denniston (WA)
|
|
I wanted to buy this helmet for my 3 year old daughter, but didn't know whether to get a small or X-small. So I found a website which gives the head measurements that correspond to the helmet sizes. Then I just Googled an inches to centimeters conversion site.
Sm: 51-56cm (20.1 inches - 22.0 inches)
Md: 54-59cm (21.3 inches - 23.2 inches)
Lg: 58-63cm (22.8 inches - 24.8 inches)
Going by the other sizes, I can GUESS that an X-small is probably going to be around 19 - 21 inches. My daughter's head measures at 50.8cm, so I got a size Small so she can grow into it. It is now May 9, 2011. Haven't I'll let you know by the end of the month whether or not it fits well, and adjust my rating accordingly!
UPDATE: We received the helmet, and I can't rave about it enough. She got the pink helmet with the blossoms on the back. It has white straps. The helmet's fit is *exact* in regards to the cm. There are three sizes of padding. The helmet comes with the medium/normal padding already installed. When she put the helmet on with the installed padding, it was just a tiny bit too big. So I put the thickest padding in and the fit is *perfect*. They also include thinner padding for when the little noggin becomes not-so-little. The velcro which holds the padding in is strong and does a very good job of keeping the padding in place during play.
The adjustability on the chin straps is VERY versatile. There are three different places where you can tighten or loosen it to fit. I had to tighten it at least four inches, and the strap doesn't look any thicker and is not cumbersome. I didn't find it hard to adjust at all, but it is done in a way where my daughter can't just reach up and loosen it or mess with it to make it dangerous.
NOTE: the pink helmet with the white blossoms on the back is a bit of a richer, darker pink and not as light, or pastel pink, as the picture would suggest. I am very satisfied with the color, and that it isn't pastel pink.
This is the best helmet. It's very good quality. She looks super cute in this particular style, as well. I was afraid that it would be too chunky-looking and overwhelm her head, but after seeing how cute it is on her, I'm very glad I went with the Bell Fraction for my little 36 month old. I couldn't be happier. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

WARNING: Purple Critters style helmet has PINK straps, March 28, 2010
By Angela Holland (Huntsville, AL USA)
|
|
We bought the PURPLE CRITTERS styled helmet for our son only to find that the INSIDE PADDING AND CHIN STRAPS ARE PINK. Perhaps we should have stayed away from this design because it says purple, but the picture looked like it would work for either a boy or a girl. Other than that, the helmet is great quality and fit. I just wanted to warn other shoppers.

Great fit, bright colors (toddler helmet in XS), October 7, 2010
By Keira Reed (MA, USA)
|
|
I bought Neon Orange Critters in extra small for my average sized two-year boy and it fits great (though I used additional foaming included in the package). My son loves his new helmet and even tried to sleep in it. The colors are very bright, exactly like pictured and the helmet looks very safe once adjusted.
UPDATE: it's been several months since we bought this helmet, and my son has grown quite a bit, so I had to use different padding to adjust the size. Just wanted to add to my review that the fact that Bell included different types of padding in the package really allows this helmet grow with your child without buying a new one every few months and years (I tried on the same model in size small, it fit great without additional padding)

Love it! (Matte Black, XS), April 15, 2011
By Shauna G (Here, There, and Everywhere)
|
|
I'm impressed with both the quality and appearance of this helmet. We purchased the XS in Matte Black for my 2 1/2 year old son. His head is a little on the larger side, so we did not need the extra padding that it came with, but it was nice that it was there if we needed it. The strap is easy to for parents to adjust and seems comfortable. However, he hates anything on his head (hats, sunglasses, etc) so now the only tricky part is getting him to wear it! The helmet feels very sturdy in construction and secure on his head. Although a little more expensive, I feel much better purchasing one of these instead of one of the cartoon character helmets that didn't seem to give as good a fit.

Fits great and cute too, October 24, 2010
By VAR
|
|
My 5-year old has a smaller than average sized head so finding a proper fitting helmet has been difficult. We purchased this helmet in an extra-small, and the fit was great! She loved the purple and green flower design too! Not too "babyish"-- all the smaller sized helmets at the stores have preschool characters on them. It appears to be well constructed. The foam inside the helmet is pretty thick.

WARNING: Paul Frank Green Apple helmet has pink interior and straps, November 29, 2010
By badgercowgirl (Rice Lake WI)
|
|
Just as an FYI: I saw that someone else posted a review of another of these helmets that seemed gender neutral and had pink straps, so I thought I'd share my experience too. Other than the color of the straps, which some may not find desirable for a boy, the helmet is really cute and great quality!

You can depend on Bell, May 24, 2011

I bought this helmet for my 2 year old grandson. I got the bug camo design. His parents were very happy with the helmet, size was perfect and the suspension was easy to adjust and my grandson loves the color. I believe all Bell helmets are the most rigourously tested helmets and are the safest available.

Will fit for years, August 13, 2011
By Judy Blakeley
|
|
I bought the helmet for my 10 month old to ride in a baby bike seat. I had to switch to the thickest padding & it fits perfectly. I plan on switching to the medium padding next summer & the thinnest padding the summer after that. By the time he outgrows the helmet, he will have also outgrown the baby bike seat. It is worth spending the extra money to get a helmet that will fit well for 3 summers.

Very cool styling! Nice helmet!, February 11, 2011
By Benjamin J. Moore (Madison, WI)

My niece loves it. And now she looks cool and stylish. This helmet seems very safe while not looking like an ugly spaceship. Also, the color and graphics are great - not too "girly" - but still feminine.
Kids don't like to wear stuff that makes them look goofy, and having safe gear that you are not ashamed of is key - Thanks Bell!!

Okay..., November 5, 2010

Helmet was fine. My son didn't care for it much, but he was 1-2 years old, so that was probably unrelated to the product. I thought it looked cool.
It's nice that it comes with different sized foam (velcro'd) padding so that you can replace them as the child grows. Here's my problem: Do you keep stuff like that in a place where you'll find it 6 months or a year or two years from now? If so, kudos to you; you are more organized than we. Unfortunately for us, we moved twice after purchasing this helmet and still don't know what we did with those stupid foam things. So we had to purchase a different helmet when he got too big for this. Too bad. Not a huge detractor for the helmet itself, I know, but from now on I will seriously consider stuff like this - other helmets have different fit systems that you don't have to keep careful track of separately...

Had to return it. Small is too big for my 2 year old, October 8, 2011
By C. Pinchon (Seattle WA)
|
|
I ordered a size small, in white for my 2 year old son since he's learning to bike around, but it's too big. He doesn't have the biggest head, but with the thicker padding, the helmet still looked ill fitting, like he had a long way to go. The strap didn't fit snugly around his face, it was too loose. The white was easily scratched so I returned it, maybe next time get a dark color and size XS.

Great helmet, August 27, 2011
By Gary Cornell (Croton-on-Hudson, NY)

This is a really nice helmet. Fits my 2 year old perfectly, size small, with the included foam inserts. Comes with 3 different sizes that you can change as your child's head grows. SMART! Love the orange color. Like this helmet much better than those bike helments that seem to just rest on your head. Appears to provide a lot of protection.

Great for our daughter!, August 25, 2011
By J. Drahos
|
|
Our daughter is just turning 1 year old and I was very unsatisfied with the previous bike helmet that we received as a gift. It was more of a traditional helmet and kept sliding forward over her eyes. I ordered the XS size of this helmet (even though she has a large head for her age) and it fits great! It stays in place and she is happy with it during the ride. She kept trying to pull off her old one, but she leaves this one alone. We used the smallest insert pads and it fits snug with room for growth with the other inserts. I highly recommend this helmet over the others!

Great toddler helmet. Worth the few xtra bucks., June 13, 2011
By Max's Mom (Redwood City, CA)
|
|
I bought this to replace the crappy Schwinn toddler's skull helmet that I bought for my daughter some time back at Target. I recently bought a bike with an attached baby seat, and the Schwinn helmet proved to be problematic: there were exposed sticky spots and velcro on the inside of the helmet that stuck to and ripped her hair--Ouch! It also is the kind of helmet that sticks out in back, so it always pushed forward when she sat in the baby seat--very unsafe. I never thought I'd get her back on the bike just because of how uncomfortable the helmet proved to be!
This Bell helmet is perfect. It comes with different sized pads, so I was able to use the larger pads to get a good, snug fit. It seems very soft and comfortable, and it's low-profile, so it doesn't get moved around on her head. She's 19 months old, and a big girl, and still I've had to cinch the straps about as tight as they'll go. But that said, she'll be able to wear this helmet for a long time. I love the super-cute color and wave pattern too. I think she forgets she's wearing it after a while, and she's able to enjoy the ride. Never again will I go cheap on a safety item like this. It's worth it for the comfort and peace of mind.

as advertised!, September 13, 2010
By M. Kauffman (madison, wi)
|

bought this as a birthday gift for my nephew... he wanted an all black helmet to ride his bike, roller blade, skateboard, etc. He loved the helmet. He peeled off any factory stickers and put a bunch of his own on it. It fit very well aided with all the added, extra foam cushioning strips that come with the helmet. This should allow the child to use a slightly bigger helmet and grow into, removing any extra padding as their head gets bigger. The chin strap is a little bit tricky to adjust for an adult (nearly impossible for a child - which I guess is good).

Great for little kids, November 14, 2011
By Stop Googling Me (Florida, MO)
|
|
I wanted to buy a helmet for my then-10 month old. Most helmets are huge and don't fit infants. As I understand it, in a lot of states, it's illegal to put a kid of this age on a bike. That said, I don't live in one of these states and I haven't gotten around to putting my kid in a bike trailer. The helmet itself fits just fine on his little head once the extra padding was put in. Of course, it's a little heavy, but is safe.

This helmet is adorable! The only thing I don't like is how easy it is to tear out the padding--my 2-year old is always pulling it out! Wish it had more velcro to attach it more sturdily. But you can't beat how cute the helmet is! (We got the Little critters orange and the pink with flowers).

My son is 16 months old & thanks to the various sized removable cushions that came with the helmet, he is able to wear this now with the thickest padding. This is by far the best helmet out there. Its strong and cool. Plus with the extra cushions, your kid can grow into it. Dont get an XS, get a Small for a 20 month old toddler. They are always growing so fast, it does not make sense to get a smaller one. My son likes it, he leaves it on, its comfortable.

I decided to get a helmet for me since I wanted to ride my MTB more, so I started searching.
As you may know, there are many kinds of helmet and I was really lost on what I should get. Then I decided to go with customer review and this helmet had most positive ratings even with a higher price than others....I said "Let's go with a flow" and got the item delivered and I have to say the customer reviews were right.
It is rigid and you can feel it is going to give you a protection. It also has three types of cushion to fill the gap so that it gives you good fit. It is light and I am happy with my purchase.

Very Good Helmet, May 9, 2011

This helmet fits my 3 year old son (who has a sort of big head) well. The only criticism I have is that the straps are pink which makes it a "girl" helmet -- at least according to my husband. Please be aware of that when ordering. I had assumed the straps would be black. My son really likes purple and so we kept the helpment despite its "girlie" appearance.

My baby loves his hat, March 30, 2012
By expecting mom

My 10 month old baby just learned how to walk by himself. He fell down constantly and hurt himself many times a day. We decided to get him this hat. The first time we put it on, he was not happy. But when he saw himself with the hat in the mirror, he seemed to like how he looked. Afterwards, there is no resistance when the hat is put on. We ordered Neon Orange Critter. It's very cute. Most of all, it works very well. The xs size with the middle sized padding fit him very well.

Pads make it easy to customize fit, March 22, 2012
By Oak Brook (Middletown, MD USA)
|
|
One nice thing about this helmet is that it comes with three sets of pads with different thicknesses. I hadn't given it very much thought when I made the purchase, but children's heads vary not only in size but also in shape, so simply measuring the circumference of your child's head might not give you enough information to select the proper helmet. The good thing about the Bell Fraction helmet is that it comes with three sets of pads, or 6 pads in total.
In my case, I purchased the small size for my 6yo, and found the helmet wouldn't fit with the medium-thickness pads that come pre-installed. However by replacing the pad that runs from ear-to-ear with a thinner pad, the helmet fit just right. I was able to keep the medium-thickness pad on the inside front of the helmet, because he had more room there.
The ability to customize the helmet for a proper fit sets this helmet apart from others.
Although the title calls it a bike helmet, it's really a helmet for a variety of activities. My son uses this helmet for ice skating, and I could see this helmet used for activities like skateboarding or roller blading.
