Hitch is tops, packaging leaves much to be desired, June 1, 2011
By Agent Smith
|
|
Like some other reviewers have written, my Curt 13555 hitch for my 2011 CR-V came with half the actual hitch exposed and hanging out of the box! The hitch arrived in 2 days from an Amazon Pennsylvania warehouse via UPS.
This scraped up the powder coating and unknown to me at the time, slightly bent the mounting tabs on one side. I bolted up one side, loosely, then moved to the other side, one of the two holes did not line up at all!
After much cursing and brute force with bare hands and feet, I reluctantly unbolted the whole thing. A call to Curt had them recommend using a jack and a 2x4 to spread the flanges back to their proper width. My personal feeling was I shouldn't have to do this to a brand new hitch.
Thanks to Amazon's excellent return policy, I returned the hitch for a full refund. I did exhaustive research on other hitches, but always came back to the Curt for it's looks and quality construction.
Finally I took a huge gamble and ordered another Curt 13555 from Advanced Auto Parts, taking full advantage of a free ship AND 15% off coupon. There is an Advanced Auto Parts store one town over from me, so if this one was bent I could return it very quickly.
The hitch arrived the next day, Curt has a regional warehouse an hour from my house (huge plus), and it came via UPS. There was only a small tear in this box, no damage to the hitch at all, and it fit my CR-V like a glove.
I highly recommend this hitch, but I think Curt needs to reinforce its shipping boxes better, and the gorillas from UPS need to treat the packages with more care!

Bad packaging, badly warped item, April 29, 2011
By Da Moose (Littleton, MA United States)
|
|
UPS left an open box with the hitch sticking half way out at my door. The item was scratched with protective coating chipped away in quite a few places and either it was dropped from the plain or was defective from the moment it was welded together. 'Cause otherwise I can't imagine how 1/4" steel plate can be bent to almost 15 degrees by just dropping it from a devilery truck. I don't have heavy equipment at my disposal to fix it, and in its current form there is no way to install that thing.
Contacted customer service, they are sending out a replacement. Well, will see how that pans out.

Kudos, February 3, 2012

Curt Hitch was top notch. Very solid. As stated by others, Curt packaging met minimum standards. However, Amazon made up for it. Shipment came direct from Amazon not a contributing store. The package arrived looking like it was retaped. Only a small portion of the hitch was protruding. Once opened, I noticed that there were extra Amazon boxes shoved in and around the hitch to keep it from falling through. This is customer service. Reviews/Complaints have been noted and fixes put in place for the packaging. The bolts were taped to the hitch. Not sure if by Curt or Amazon so there was no way anything would get lost if the hitch did break through the box. The install was straight forward and very easy. I used two people vise a floor jack. I held in place, wife attached nuts on u-bolt and bolts to the frame rails. Install the big solid end bolts first as the smaller end that goes under the muffler requires squeezing, leveraged against the pinch weld to get holes to align. This is why you need a second person to get the bolts started. Tried the floor jack but got tired of fighting with balancing, working around it and trying to get nuts started on the U-bold. Muffler was easily pulled loose from hangers with WD-40 applied. Install took no longer than 1.5hrs including the wiring harness and taking my time to grab tools and wife as needed. Will buy from Amazon direct again. Saved a bundle over Honda accessory hitch, wiring harness and dealer install. Installed on 2010 CR-V.

Easy installation on Honda CRV, July 3, 2011
By M. Byron (Roscoe)
|
|
I installed this on a 2011 Honda CRV by myself reasonably quickly (~1.5 hours). The hitch bolts into pre-threaded holes in the car frame. I did not need to jack up the car, but I used the floor jack and stands to support the hitch as a slowly raised it to its home position. I would recommend starting the threads on all of the bolts, before completely tightening them down. The U-clamp is the same way - I had to slacken that to get the hitch in position for the last bolt or two.

Good product, poor packaging, December 2, 2011
By Phil
|
|
I purchased this item instead of other brands because from the photos, it looked better on vehicle. Delivery was two days quicker than they said it would be. The package was busted up and hitch was hanging out end. This could have been prevented if mfg had wrapped some cardboard around ends of hitch and taped it on. When installing it, I found it was about a half inch too narrow end to end, possibly bent a bit inwards, proper packaging would probably have alleviated that situation. Once left side was loosly bolted,I had to pry it apart to get right side bolts started and that was not easy. After that, no problem. It is extremely heavy duty (overly so,IMO, about 42 lbs)but looks very good on the vehicle, almost as good as the factory hitch on my Lexus RX330. After trying my new bicycle rack with 2" attachment. I found it to be extremely loose. Measuring the supposedly 2" hitch square hole I found it to be several thousandths oversize plus the small supporting surround at the entry end of the receiver was welded on off center making it near impossible to get a decently snug fit for anything plugged into the receiver. This will cause extreme wobbling of a bike rack and extreme rattling of a trailer mount. This is certainly NOT what I consider good American craftsmanship. If it was a difficult thing to fabricate properly it would be more understandable but this is just sloppy workmanship on the fabricator's part, no excuse for it. Bottom line: it looks good and works but could be a lot nicer with little to no extra effort.

Tough Hitch -- Easy to Install, April 20, 2011
By BnEsMommy
|
|
My hubby had no problems installing this bad boy. It's easy and took less than 30 minutes IF YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED. The thing that took him the longest was getting the hangers undone to drop the muffler. Once that was out of the way he lifted the hitch and we screwed the nuts onto the u bolt and the rest was easy peasy. Should we ever have the need to buy another hitch we'll definitely be going with the Curt hitch.
The hitch is uber heavy (in my opinion) and my husband commented that he hasn't seen such beautiful welds on anything else. Not even excercise equipment at the gym. It's well constructed, the finish is gorgeous and I believe it will stand the test of time. Now we just have to put it to use.
There is one drawback to the construction of this hitch. We have a Saris T-Rax bike hitch and it has a locking mechanism that goes in the pin hole to keep the rack from wiggling inside the reciever. Unfortuantely the hole is too close to the round tubing and will not allow clearance for this mechanism, so our T-Rax will have to wobble in the reciever until we can purchase a newer rack. It's not a big difference, but it might make someone else change their mind. We however would purchase this again if we had to.
**Amazon really needs to figure a better way to package this product. The hitch was sent twice to us because the first one was damaged and missing hardware as well as hanging out of the box. HOWEVER, their awesome customer service sent us a replacement in two days, using a different carrier. Same result, EXCEPT the hardware was still intact.** Just a warning of what to expect.

Curt receiver hitch, May 7, 2012
By Don747
|
|
The instructions are well written although for further simplification I'd access the Youtube site for further guidance. If you use the Youtube video the installation process is virtually a snap. I installed the hitch without help; I used a floor jack to lift it into position. Spray the muffler hanger mount with a generous amount of WD-40 and it will slide off with ease. Installation is a no sweat affair.

EXCELLENT hitch for my 2009 Honda CRV EX-L, May 4, 2012
By MICHAEL W SMITH
|
|
It bolted on to my 2009 Honda CRV EX-L without a hitch! It would be best to have two people, one on each end. I had to slide two rubber grommets off to drop the exhaust pipe down to get to the bolts. Also, I had a little trouble getting the center bolt to line up, but that's typical of any manufactured steel part. All in all, it is a very solid product and a great price.

Right Fit CRV 2008, May 4, 2012
By Handyman (Columbus, Ohio)
|
|
Very happy with the 13555 Curt Hitch receiver. Well built and right fit CRV 2008. Very easy to install, took me about 30 miniutes at most. Nuts and bults are solid, too. Would like it to have more holes pre-drilled so that it can also fit my Honda accord which I found out, just a little off on the hole position. Anyway, it is a good product and right fit, that's what I bought for.

Honda CRV 2011, May 2, 2012
By Dahoundster

I brought this hitch with no clue what I was doing. I watch the install on YouTube a couple of times. I used w-d40 to spray on the muffler hangers and it just pop right out. I used two floor jacks to level the hitch before I install the bolts . It fit perfectly with no issues. It took around thirty minutes by myself. Easy install.

Great product. Easy to install., April 23, 2012
By H. Yee

I installed this on my 2011 CRV. I watched a YouTube video on it before I got started. Took about 1 hour by myself, would have been quicker if two people were involved. I didn't have to jack the car up. Took a little while to lower the muffler because I didn't have any WD40 at hand, at the end, I just used a little bit cooking oil. I used two jacks to raise the hitch into place. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase.

bike rack receiver, April 13, 2012
By Martina

|
I intended to purchase a hitch that was capable of carrying a 4 bike rack with bikes. The product really met the expectation. It arrived on time and in a concise box. Was pretty easy to install. It only took the dealer about 45 min to install. You can clearly see it on the car, it's not huge but it's not small in size. Overall very solid product.

Perfect Hitch for my Thule Bike Rack and my Honda CRV, April 7, 2012
By Lauren
|
|
There's no point in buying anything but the best bike rack and the best hitch. And the Curt hitch works with the Thule 4-bike rack on my 2011 Honda CRV. My mechanic installed it, and it works great. There does tend to be a little rust, but I just spray it and the rack slides out easily when I need it to.

Great hitch, April 3, 2012
By pg purtee
|
|
Like the other reviewers said mine also arrived with one end sticking out of the box. The hitch did not have a single scratch and the paint job was beautiful. The hitch went on perfectly . The only problem was one of the holes had to tapped out ( Honda's fault on that one ). Also take the u-bolt back out after you get one side started. After all four bolts are in then re-install the u-bolt.

Nice Hitch, March 19, 2012
By Joe M,

Hitch is very nice and fit like a glove after I had to bend the one side out. As others have mentioned, the packaging really sucks. Big, heavy item in a cardboard box with NO packaging - how do you think this story ends? Yes, box ripped, and bent flange.

Warped/Bent on Arrival, January 17, 2012
By Small Business Owner
|
|
After spending considerably more than the advertised 30-45 minutes trying to install the receiver by myself, I solicited another set of hands to help. Together, we didn't have any better success. Try as hard as we might, we could not get more than 3 of the primary bolts to align ... and that was with the centering u-bolt removed.
Frustrated (and embarrassed), I carried the receiver to a local truck accessory shop to see if they could install it. After about 20 minutes, they told me the receiver frame was bent/warped about 1/2 an inch. Although the shipping box was not in the best of shape on arrival, I saw no signs indicating the receiver had been damaged in transit.
Sure, I'm frustrated with Curt Manufacturing (the company that made the receiver.) I'm even more frustrated with Amazon Warehouse Deals who did a lousy job of inspecting the receiver from an earlier unsuspecting buyer. This is the second time I've purchased from Amazon Warehouse Deals and have had a problem where the item was truly defective and they re-sold it anyway.

Excellent Quality, December 4, 2011
By Jon D. Davenport
|
|
The hitch came very nicely packed and installed very easily. I was able to install it myself in the driveway with a single wrench and pry bar (to remove the rubber muffler hangers). When installed it looks like it came on the vehicle from the factory. Great addition to the vehicle since we stepped down from a full size SUV this year and need to use a storage rack off the back. Thanks!

Perfect Fit - Good Value, October 23, 2011
By KJR
|
|
Even though I moved down to a smaller vehicle (replaced Pilot with new CRV), I still wanted a Class III hitch receiver. The price was right and I was surprised to see that a large item like this qualified for free shipping on my Amazon Prime account. I was even more surprised that for 2.99 I could upgrade to overnight. I was skeptical but I ordered on Friday morning and the item showed up on my front porch around noon on Saturday. The packing was rather loose as others have commented and there were some tears on the box where metal had sliced its way through a bit, but no damage. Watch the internet videos on how to install this. Getting the rubber exhaust hangers off was the hardest part for me as I did the installation on fairly low jack stands. Lubricant helps and I used a crow bar to pry the hangers off. This installation should have been a two-man job, but I did it myself by putting the hitch on a dolly and aligning it right under the u-bolt and starting the nuts with just a few turns. With the receiver "hanging" from the center u-bolt, aligning and getting the main bolts started into the weld nuts on the frame was fairly easy. Torquing the main bolts is tricky because there is not much room to maneuver the wrench, particularly on the passenger side where the muffler prevents getting a direct line using a long extender. My 1/2 inch torque wrench was too long, so I used a shorter throw 3/8 torque wrench with a 4 inch extender. The installation took about an hour from start to finish. This receiver is rated at much greater load than the CRV so I know that the light-weight trailers I will pull with it are very secure. I highly recommend this hitch to any CRV owner. I'm off to get some fruit trees to plant as fall sets in.

The receiver arrived at the house in two or three days. Quality of manufacture and power coat paint was frist class. Installation instructions were correct in how to install. From the time I backed the CRV into the garage to completed installation was 15 minutes. I have purchase other Curt receivers for my other vehicles and have never been disappointed. I recommend Curt products to friends all the time.

2011 Honda CRV - not a perfect fit, September 25, 2011

Installation took a lot longer than it should of. I had to use a crow bar to align the holes on the receiver to the CRV. This is definitiely a two person job. I think next time I would buy the OEM. Packaging was okay but could have been better. One end was sticking out of the box. There was no damage to the receiver.

Perfect fit easy installation, September 20, 2011
By Amelia (San Jose, CA)

Used the Curt website to confirm model number and ordered through Amazon. Great price and free shipping! Can't beat it. My local hitch center wanted just over $250 for the hitch and install. Crazy. It was delivered in perfect condition and my wife and I installed it in 30 minutes (as advertised). There's also installation videos on You Tube which helped. Good finish perfect fit, strong and sturdy. Best of all-it looks great and doesn't stick out beyond the bumper. I recommend!

It is good once installed, but installing was a challenge. I needed a lot of levers and brut force to get the hitche installed because of how warped it was compared to the holes fro my CRV. I thought I would have to return it at first, but I was able to pursuade it into position. It does look good now that it is on.

2008 CRV: Simple install. It was easy to tighten three of the bolts, one by the muffler was trickier. Working underneath the car isn't my thing, but it didn't take long. This hitch looks good and works. Saved lots of green buying on Amazon and installing it myself.

Great Hitch!, April 11, 2011
By CC
|
|
If you don't have some to help hold up the hitch while you bolt it in place, a floor jack works perfectly. Using a cam-strap, I strapped the hitch at the bottom plate (under the receiver tube) to the floor jack. Be careful not to block the holes that are for the U-bolt with the jack plate. A little tricky trying to balance the hitch on the jack while I strapped it down, but not too bad. Was able to roll it under the my CRV and jack it right up into place. The bolts that came with the hitch almost seemed not to be the correct thread. They were very tight going into the weld nuts on the car - even wire brushed out the nuts and sprayed with WD-40. I was afraid I was going to strip the weld nuts. Tried to loosely screw in a couple of different thread bolts but they were worse. Just takes a some strength to get them in. Did not seem to strip out. All off them were like this. My CRV has almost 60k miles, so maybe it was rust/dirt getting in the way. Anyway, got everything tightened down. Hitch seems to be solid and looks great. Definitely watch this video, [...], for help. The video is for installation of hitch on a 2009 CRV, but is exactly the same installation procedure for a 2008.

Not that bad to install, November 23, 2010
By Fishngolf (TN)
|
|
Got this installed and it works well. Not too bad to install and even looks good. You can go to Youtube and search for this receiver - I followed a video on there step by step for the install and was done in 30 minutes. Recommend using a torque wrench so you know you hit the minimum torque (I'm an adult male of medium build and I had to get more torque on it than I thought I would need to make the torque wrench click - prepare to contort your body during installation).
As far as use, I've towed a trailer with it a few times. The heaviest load I towed would have probably weighed about 1,800 lbs. I was surprised how well the CR-V did towing. I never had to get above about 45 MPH using the route I took, and all were short (5 mile) tows, but for that, it did the job much better than I thought.
I've now had this receiver about 6 months and all is well with it. Highly recommend.

Solid, September 17, 2010
By Bob
|
|
The receiver arrived very fast and partially sticking out of the box, but no damage. I watched a quick You tube video on how to drop the muffler on my CRV to install the receiver. Installation took all of about 20 minutes. Definitely need a second pair of hands to help hold the receiver up while you attach it. It has good weight to it and feels very solid. It fit the perfectly to the pre-drilled holes on my CRV, just do not tighten any of the bolts until you have them all started and leave the center attachment very loose so there is plenty of wiggle room to adjust. Then tighten everything down.
Great product. Used it on an 8 hour trip to the beach with the curt basket attachment. no problems, could not feel any extra motion in the car. Very solid and looks great.

Ordered this Friday night, arrived Monday morning. The box was beat up, but no scratches and all parts were intact.

It is very snug fit to car, doesn't stick out (without drawbar) beyond the bumper, very solid design and I think it looks great-compliments CRV.

Curt Hitch 13555, August 10, 2010
By TEF3 (PA)

The Curt Hitch (#13555) was a perfect fit for my 2010 Honda CRV. The product arrived early, and in great shape with no flaws. Installation took about 40 minutes and was easy (would have been easier with two people as the hitch is about 40 pounds). I've used the hitch several times and it looks and works great. An excellent product.
