3.0 out of 5 stars.  nerve racking for big bikes, November 13, 2006
By Pseudo Punk (Houston, TX United States)
I've got a pretty large frame cruiser, but still within standard bike sizes, and the bar is just barely long enough to connect between the handlebar stem and the seat. If you try to pick the bar up in the middle (with the bike on it) the beam comes apart. It seems to be ok on the actual rack though, as there are two contact points towards the sides. I always keep a SUPER close eye on it though because I'm waay nervous that it's gonna separate and my bike will go tumbling down the road. I haven't used it very much because of it. If you've got a smaller frame bike you probably wouldn't have a problem at all.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Device but with design flaw, September 11, 2009
By Woody san (Chesapeake, Virginia)
I received my Bike Beam this week and gave it a test. It does exactly what is advertised to do and appears well built except for a design flaw that will cause the plastic collar where the two tubes of the bike beam slide together. The molded collar has a wedge molded into the inside of the ring which rides into a grove of the smaller tube. The problem is that the end of the grove ends before the inner tube bottoms out in the outer tube. This causes the wedge of the molded ring to rise up out the groove, putting a large amount of stress on the molded ring causing it to crack and eventually causing the ring to break and fall off. I believe the purpose of this ring is to make for a smooth operation when expanding the bike beam and to prevent debris from getting in between the 2 tube walls. I can see after a period of time without the ring, the Bike Beam may become harder to put on and off the bike as the debris between the 2 tubes builds up. I have written to Saris company about this flaw, but as usual I suppose the e-mail was read by a person hired to handle first level complaints and has no understanding of what I am trying to describe to them unless they have a Beam to look at. They quickly offered to send me a new bike beam but until the design flaw is corrected, briskly contracting the the beam or jarring either end when it is fully closed will cause the ring to break again. I have no problem with the collar being cracked because I will repair it myself and as far as the beam doing what it is supposed to do, it has little effect on that unless it is left un-repaired and debris is allowed to build up. My main purpose was to make Saris aware of the problem and correct it, because the next person may not think it is as minor of an issue as I do. I would of given this Beam a 4 or 5 even with the broken piece because it is that good but I am giving it a 2 in hopes it will flag someone at Saris to take a look at this problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good value, June 7, 2007
By C. Frantilla (Brookfield, IL)
Different manufacturers sell similar adapters which cost more but do essentially the same thing. Saris' bike beam works as advertised, does not feel cheap, but is still reasonably priced -- good thing, since I bought four of them!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  does the job, October 25, 2007
By Cycling Enthusiast (Hingham, MA)
Bought bike carrier and realized that women's bikes could not be loaded without an adapter. The Saris crossbar adapter goes on and off easily and does the job, i.e., the bike can be loaded onto the carrier. The price and service through Amazon was good and the delivery was speedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike Beams are great, January 5, 2007
By E. E. O'Neil
The Saris Bike Beams are a MUST when hanging women's bikes or specialty frame bikes onto any trunk bike rack. It would be impossible to put my husband's mountain bike on a trunk rack without the Saris bike beam.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bar, Great Value!!, April 5, 2008
By Tech Guru (Tucson, Az)
Purchased to mount my irregular shaped frame on a new trunk rack. I've seen other inferior bars with no locking or telescoping feature selling for 10-15 dollars more. This bar is strong, won't scratch my frame and is worth the cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid and secure, January 20, 2009
By Stephen McHenry (Olney, MD USA)
It doesn't matter how much you paid for your bike you want to be sure it doesn't fall off your trunk rack when driving down the highway. The Saris Bike Beam is very solid, well made, with a smooth open/close-locking function with an easy to use button on each end and the beam telescopes smoothly to adjust to the correct size. We have used it on several long trips to hold my wife;s Schwinn cruiser, not a light bike, and it has done great. We also use it to hold my wife's bike on the wall mounted rack in the garage. Simple design, very well made.

The Saris Bike Beam has made loading my women's bike onto the Saris Bones trunk rack much easier. Once on the rack, the bike sits with greater security and is transported with ease. I'm very happy I made the decision to buy this product. V. Collins

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Works, though tubing should be larger diameter, November 2, 2010
By Jim (Chicago)
The first Bike Beam I received was broken. The plastic collar at the junction for the two parts of the bar was broken in the box. This piece has no structural function so I could let it slide. A more serious problem was one of the jaws would not lock in the closed position. There's a spring-loaded metal ball which fits in a hole in the jaw when closed. My ball would never engage the hole to lock the jaw. The Beam is useless if the jaws cant be locked.

I called Saris and a replacement was sent out same day with a prepaid label to send back the broken Beam. Excellent customer service!

The replacement Beam was undamaged and functions correctly.

There's one glaring design flaw in my humble opinion. The diameter of the Beam's two telescoping tubes is 7/8" for the smaller and one inch for the larger. This is considerably smaller than the minimum diameter of the clamps on my rack. I use the Beam with a Saris Bones rack which I think is fantastic. It holds a standard bike more securely than any other rack I've tried. When using the Bike Beam, the clamps on the rack cannot tightly cinch on the small diameter of the Beam. The Beam (and bike) bounce readily since the clamps don't even touch the top of the Beam. I use some thick foam to make up the gap and allow the clamps to apply a bit of downward pressure on the Beam. Had Saris simply made the Beam a diameter similar to a bike's top tube, this problem would not exist. It's surprising that Saris makes a bike rack accessory that their own rack cannot securely clamp.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Saris Bike Beam, August 17, 2010
By Edward D. Poole (Unionville, CT USA)
After using a Yakima bike beam, which was very difficult to use, I purchased a Saris bike beam to go with my Saris Bones 3 bike rack, let me tell you this thing is definitely worth the money! Very simple to use, on and off the bike in less than a minute! Highly recommended.

Great product - I thought it was a little pricey (30 or 35 bucks), but after receiving the product I could immediately tell it was a durable, quality product that would last. It is quite heavy, so I was glad to get the free shipping.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect answer for wife's bike., March 15, 2012
By parmachenee (Maine)
I couldn't mount my wife's bike, woman's style, on my tow-mounted Thule bar without this great crossbar adapter. It connects to the bike-bar stem and seat stem very easily and quickly. After that, both bikes can be mounted to the bar easily. It's very sturdy but double-check to make sure both ends are locked in place after connecting them. Worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great, November 9, 2011
By Cheryl
This was purchased to hold a women's 700c hybrid bike on a hitch mounted bike rack. We had been putting the bike on our old trunk mounted rack at obviously odd angles for quite some time. Figured it was time to purchase a bike beam to allow the bike and rack to be much more balanced.

Like:
- Easy to install on bike
- Provides an easier mount on the bike racks
- Ends lock into place securely
- Ends have plastic covering the metal so it shouldn't scratch the bike

Dislike:
- Beam is not spring loaded
- Beam does not have any locking mechanism on the bar itself

My only real complaint is the bar does not have a spring or some type of lock on the bar. So when on the bike it kind of flops around. I ended up putting a velcro loop through the seat mount that I use to secure the beam on the back of the bike. This was to try to keep the bike from bouncing around on the mount as well as to try to keep the bar from destroying my rear reflector and light.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well with ladies road frame., June 9, 2011
By BubbaBob
In order to get my wife's bike on the carrier I had to jam it on and this was always stressing the cables. This solved the problem nicely. Also, works very well on my son's full suspension bike. Will probably order a second one but am holding off due to the price, in my opinion the price seems a little steep for what you get.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A necessity for a step-through bike, May 29, 2011
By W. Calhoun
I had puchased a Trek woman's non road bike for my wife with a step thorough crossbar. None of this swing your leg over the seat for her. My old Toys R Us bike rack accommodated the configuration, although our bikes banged together which was not a good thing.

I recently picked up a Saris Bones 3 bike carrier and there was no way I'd be hauling her bike with out a "bike beam." The instruction for use were clear. That means, read once, leave instructions in the house and go mount the bike on the bike rack. It works very well. It feels substantial and I have not noticed any scratching of the bike's finish from the plastic contact points. By design the Saris Bones separates the bikes and keeps them from coming in contact with each other. I don't know how the Saris compares to other bike beams as this was my first, but I am happy with the purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Works but a Strange Design, September 27, 2010
By CMOS (US)
I use this with my Saris "Bones" rack. It's simple to figure out and use, and it's well built in terms of material quality. Sturdier in fact than the rack itself, which uses cheap plastic screws that get stripped easily. However, the design of this "cross bar" is such that it cannot create / provide any tension between the front handle bars / fork area and the seat support. It sits there loosely and consequently you have to take a bit more care to balance the bike properly once it's on the rack. You may also have to adjust the seat so that when you hang the bike on the rack, the tires have enough ground clearance. Because it's so loose fitting, the higher your seat sits above the frame, the lower your tires will hang down (because the bar has no tension, you can't control the height at which it affixes to the seat mount). I can't say I've found anything better, but Saris should improve the design of the clamps somehow.

Excellent! Looked at Yakima (for which I am a big fan and everything else I have is Yakima), Thule, Allen, and others - picked Saris and very happy. Easy, fits perfect, no concerns about it failing. Sorry Amazon - but I purchased it at a local bike shop for less $$$ - support your local economy where possible!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very easy to use. Definitely recommend it., March 13, 2010
By lepakshi (San Francisco Bay Area, USA)
I just picked it up in a local bike store couple of hours ago. I wish I had bought it in Amazon though.. I would have save a bunch of money. At 31$, this is a great vakue.

My wife bought a new bike last week... a raliegh upright bike... and we had a Saris Bones bick rack. We did not think about, how we would load the bike on top of the bike rack... and once we came to the parking lot, it caught us by surprise. I think every bike store should recommend a bike beam to their customers who buy women's bike. Anyways, we managed to somehow bring the bike back... by handing it upside down :-) the first time.

Today i visited the bike store and asked if they have any solution for this... and they showed me this product. I was impressed by how quickly it opens and closes... that it makes it a snap to put this one on the bike. It takes <15 seconds to put this on a women's bike. I paid $39 instead of the nice $31 here at Amazon. Almost feel like returning it and buying here... but I will settle for the good Karma and local jobs instead.

While driving, I did not feel that the bike shook or anything. So I will use this a lot. Waiting for the summer to arrive :)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Women's bike solution, February 3, 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Does what it is supposed to do., June 27, 2008
By Edmar S. Cornejo
This product works like it is described. It does a great job of putting odd framed bikes onto a standard bike rack. The mountain bike that I have has a suspension frame that made it difficult to mount onto a rack. The other bike is my wifes, a womens bike, and it also worked well. It is very sturdy and durable. The one advice that I would give when using it is to make sure your seat is securely attached, as this is where the adapter locks onto. Have not used any other adapters, so I cant compare them to any others.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Returned it, July 29, 2011

We didn't like this at all because it is so shaky on the bike. It is strong though and it probably doesn't matter that it is not tight fighting around the bike itself. It just made us nervous so we returned it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Flimsy, September 19, 2009
By Lohas addict (Shenyang, China)
The claws at each end don't lock securely - one of them came open while we were driving on the interstate. Luckily it stayed attached to the bike, but with worse luck the bike could have fallen onto the highway and gotten dragged or lost. I'm throwing it away and looking for something that attaches more securely to the bike posts.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  works but ..., February 11, 2012
By B. Neustater (Miami, Florida)
It works as advertised but design could be better. There is an exposed bolt at the pivot head that attaches to the headstock that, at least in the case of my specialized Camber, took a nice piece of paint off the frame below it during transit. You could (and probably should) attach a piece of foam or similar soft material either to the bar or the bike frame to prevent this.
Otherwise attaches the bike quite well to the Saris bones rack I use it with and is easy to operate.
