  • Tire Wear Indicators
  • Best All Around Race Tire on the Market
  • Black with Silver Labels
Product Description:
Continental 0100000 Grand Prix 4000S 700 x 23 Black Tire with Black Chili boasts global appeal as the best all round race bike tire on the market. The all black Grand Prix 4000 S catches the eye with its big silver labels. Aggressive and posh alike, it matches every high-end race bike perfectly. With the reduction to black and silver the Grand Prix 4000S does not clash with the frames color or rim stickers. S stands for sport, special and ?Schwarz? ? the German term for black. But the Grand Prix 4000 S can do more than just look good. Not only is it fast and super grippy, thanks to its state-of-the-art Black Chili rubber compound, but it is also tough with a healthy tread layer and of course our Vectran anti puncture breaker layer underneath. So for reliability, longevity and all out performance for your race machine, the Grand Prix 4000s is the only choice. Specs: Color - black/black skin foldable; Black Chili - yes; Weight - 205 grams; Recommended PSI - 110; Maximum PSI - 120; PU - 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love it..., July 15, 2009
By CD (Japan)
I commute about 27 miles a day. I need tires that can take the broken glass and road crud in stride without flatting. I used to use Armadillo's but they were so heavy and slick in the rain. Then I used Gatorskins, which I loved...until my supplier ran out of stock for quite some time. Once my Gatorskins wore out I thought I'd save some bucks and buy some less expensive tires. Result... flat... flat... flat... flat. Ended up replacing tubes on a weekly basis. So... I sprung for this more expensive tire. It is just as good as the Gatorskin used to be. Once I put it on, I've not flatted again. Rides really smooth too. It is also relatively light and the black tire is really sticky and holds the road in the rain. I have confidence, not only that the tire won't flat on my way to work, but that even in rainy conditions, I won't be sliding on grates or road paint. Finally, a nice touch... they've included a small depression in the tire that helps you know when it is time to replace the tire. That is a helpful feature... lets you get the most from the tire without overdoing it (as I tend to do).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Roadscrape, September 16, 2009
By Drala Hiker (Roswell, GA USA)
I did a good bit of research and narrowed my choice down to the Conti 4000 S and Vittoria Open Corsa Evo. I found a great deal on pair of Contis for much less than the Vits, so ordered the 4000 S in 700x23. I'm fairly sure the 4000 S and 4000 in black are the same tire with different graphics - but the 4000 in colors do not have the same material compound.

Over 3,000 miles on this set and still amazed by them (rotated when rear started to square). My other bikes have wider tires (28 and 30) yet the Conti GP 4000 S in 23 mm rides more smoothly (I'm 178 lb., run it at 100 psi - note that maximum pressure on bike tires means max. for 220 lb. total weight - vary the psi according to your weight+bike weight).

The 4000 S has amazing ride quality and durability on chip/seal and old broken pavement as well as new blacktop. I've hit fresh gravel (sharp edged stuff indeed), plenty of road holes, patches of broken glass, small pieces of sheet metal and who knows what else - yet can find any cuts on either tire (never seen a Michilin or Specialized pull that trick). Thankfully I no longer live in goathead country, but these tires I bet would handle goatheads as well or better than other racing/training tires.

Great traction even on wet roads. Confidence inspiring handling on mountain decents. Noticably low rolling resistance and excellent road feel compared to any clincher Specialized, Hutchinson or Michelin that I've ridden - yet the 4000 S is also more durable. How do they that?

Not tried the Vit Open Corsa or the Challenge tires, but they would make for an interesting comparison, indeed.

No flats, ever, on these tires - that's a first for me. That includes a 24 hour race on city streets in downtown Atlanta, as well as the usual suburban and country road regular rides.

I've not babied these tires in the least. If anything, my confidence in the 4000 S has caused me to push them harder than any tire I've ridden in the last 25 years. I've no logical reason to try any other tire other than my own curiosity.

They're not inexpensive, but keep an eye out and you can find a deal on a pair at times, such as Pro Bike Kit offers.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great tires, May 29, 2010
By deionychus (Colorado, USA)
I live in Colorado and we have lots of goatheads around here. I wanted some tires that held up fairly well to punctures but didn't feel like I was running steel belts while pedaling uphill. I have been using these tires for roughly 3 seasons and am very happy with them. I noticed at first that I was still flatting with them but when I am diligent about keeping the pressure up (I run them at 115), they perform much better.

I can generally get ~7,000 miles per tire unless I roll over a hazard and get a slice (it's only happened once).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great road bike tire!, November 13, 2009
By john18555 (St Louis, MO)
I bought these for my Trek 2200 road bike, and
they replaced the Bontrager (=Trek) original
equipment tires that I had continued to stay
with. I decided to switch because I wanted
more confidence in the tire during a high
speed turn. This particular tire is a new
variant of the Continental 4000, in that they
are using a new rubber compound, hence the
"S" designation.

I really like this tire. It has great traction,
you can even feel how tacky it is with your hand
compared to other tires. It also seems to
have lower rolling resistance, although that
is admittedly subjective and hard to measure.
From a performance and satisfaction standpoint,
these are the best tires I have ever purchased,
and I would buy them again.

The tires are "tight" and when you install
them, they don't just slip over your rims
easily. I not only experienced that, but
that's what a bike shop mechanic told me, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Continental Grand Prix 4000S, June 29, 2010
By Anthony J. Clark (Spokane Valley, WA, US)
I have been hooked on Continental tires for some time now. I have the Ultra Gatorskin on my commuter and the Grand Prix 4000S on my fun bike, a Trek Madone 5.2. The way they hum when I get going is gratifying. For myself, decent speed is achievable even though they are a heavier tire. Flats are still possible, however, with the Kevlar. A thorn got me on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alene but I believe it would have punctured just about any tire. I am not a racer so weight isn't that critical for me. This tire gives me a smooth and safe ride. If anyone out there recommends a better tire, I'm all ears.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Over 5000 miles and still going strong, October 2, 2010
By SirBikesAlot (Poland, OH, US)
I installed these tires on my road bike on Jan. 1st 2010. It is now Oct. 1st and over 5000 miles later the tires are still going strong. I had 1 flat during that time and it was going through the Kennerdell tunnel on the Alleghany Bike Trail near Franklin, Pa. Best tires ever as far as I'm concerned.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love them!, July 7, 2010
By R. Gettler (Leesburg, VA)
I've been using Conti's for many years now. These 4000s tires have been on my main ride for 12 months and about 1300 miles, and no flats, nothing to do but add air... I have them on a backup bike too. I have several friends with this tire, also no flats. They're nice and sticky, good in the rain too.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Touring Tires, September 10, 2009
By Iowa Bob (Des Moines)
I bought these tires after suffering through enumerable flats with a set of Michelin Pro's. I liked the Pro's for their light weight, but found that I was averaging a flat every 100 miles or so. I bought the Continentals for both me and my wife, and have been using them since the end of July. So far no flats! These tires are fairly light for a touring tire. Also, to my surprise, I found them fairly easy to mount. I would recommend them if you're looking for a general purpose touring tire.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Tires are ok, August 11, 2011
By Boston,MA
My only complaint with this tire is that its fairly thin. You are more likely to get a flat than a normal tire that has a protection layer. Of course this is expected since it is considered a race tire. Nonetheless, the first 50 miles on this tire was fustrating. Kept getting flats from running over what I considered small objects that shouldnt penetrate a fairly protected tire. I now reserve these tires for race day and use a more protected tire for my training rides.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  best road tire thus far..., August 8, 2010
By KAIFS
Kept trying different tires on the custom Trek 1.5... due to roads around here was always getting flats. This is the first tire that I can honestly say I will be getting again (4000 NOT the 4000s). Added bonus - these come in different colors to match your ride too.... Bike stores in NE Wisconsin can't keep these in stock - so always have to web order... usually $100 for a pair shipped. Great tire - you won't regret it. put it to 105-115 for faster ride.

I have been buying the Grand Prix tires for my bike since new (5 years) I decided to try the Black Chili this time for something new. Was not disapointed. I would suggest this tire to all of my friends. Haven't had them long enough for a complete test, but I have been on three centurys with no problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bad-ass tires, November 18, 2010

I just upgraded from Vredestein Fortezza to these Continental GP 4000S tires for winter riding and am super impressed by the ride quality and durability so far. I ride in the Bay Area, mostly on weekends, and am confident riding with these in all conditions. I have to admit they also look pretty sweet too.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  David A., July 12, 2011
By David A
Wow, what a great tire. I have always liked Conti rubber having rode them on both my mountain and road bike. The tire Conti tire I bought was a gatorskin that the sidewall got a cut in it. So I was a little skeptical of buying another expensive tire but so far after about 300 miles on these they have not disappointed. The ride is really smooth. I have increased my average speed by at least 3/4 of a mile per hour over my old heavy square rear tire. These tire are the real deal, low rolling resistance, sticky cornering and light enough to race on. Stay away from the lightweight Conti tubes, I had one blow up me for no reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid performance and value, June 30, 2011
By Magnus Gille
I've used a multiple of different tires on my road bikes. Hutchinson, Specialized and I've come to standardize on GP4000S. I've used their Gatorskins and GP24S too but I think they had too high rolling resistance and I don't need the added puncture safety. Currently I have only one bike but 3 complete sets of wheels, all equipped with GP4000S, both clinchers and tubulars and they just work and provide great value. I'm even stocking a spare at home for when (if) they wear out or I have a catastrophic failure. Typically I go through about 1-2 sets per year but I bike minimum 150 miles per week every week of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Tire - Great Value!, April 22, 2011
By T. Milligan (Clayton, DE USA)
I purchased these tires after going through several sets of Michelin tires (Krylions & Pro 3 Race). These tires are superior to the Michelins in every way. They have excellent all-around performance and offer very good grip in all weather conditions. I'm not to sure how to calculate their rolling resistance, but these babies sure roll smooth and their ride is top-notch.

It seems like my Michelins started to crack (dry rot?) after very little use. Perhaps I got a bad set, but the Continental 4000S are still in like new shape after several hundred miles. I couldn't be more impressed. In fact, so impressed I bought a second set for my hybrid bike. It will take some exceptional reviews to get me to switch to another tire. For me, these are the tires to beat. However, don't take my word for it. I highly recommend purchasing a pair and judging for yourself.

A fellow cyclist told me about this tires and quite frankly I didn't think that I would see that much of a difference, but after I got them I realized how much better my ride could have been and how less flat I would have had. The ride is much smoother !

5.0 out of 5 stars.  These tires have been great, May 2, 2012
By uncle-buck (Houston, TX USA)
Bought a pair of these tires 8 months ago and they have been fantastic. Low rolling resistance and they hold up well under a lot of different road conditions. Recently rode the Lone Star MS 150, a 150 mi. 2-day Texas ride from Houston to Austin. People all around me were getting flats, so I was a little concerned. These tires held up like champs. They are expensive, but I don't mind paying a little more for top quality products. Will definitely buy them again!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Conti G.P. 4000S w/BlkChili, April 6, 2012
By Herr Baron
I have just put about 250 km on these tires. All of it on dry pavement, with no hard cornering. They are the best rolling tires I have ever ridden. The 23 mm width is too thin for me, but this is not an issue with Conti. They do pick up small stones, but so far, none have damaged the tires.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best tires ever, March 17, 2012
By GearInches (MO, USA)
Tons of grip, 3000mi+ tread life, light weight, easy to install. I've used many other tires, but this is the only one I'll buy from now on.

NOTE: 25c model measures as a 28c once installed, and the 23c measures like a 24c (24.5mm exactly). So, if you're looking for the performance of a 25c, get the 23c. If you need extra comfort for rail-trails (yes, these handle gravel rail-trails w/ zero issues), then get the 25c.

I rode my 25c models for 3,100mi or so, zero flats. Now on the 23c, and I like the performance even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Well worth the investment, June 29, 2011
By atriguy
I have used other cheaper tires in the past but they always seem to have major compromises. A light/fast tire will wear down too quickly and a thick tire is too sticky and does not roll. They are pricey, but when I'm racing or training, I don't have time to get a flat tire and in this case, I have not had any issues all season.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Tougher than nails..., October 26, 2011
By Jon
I can not say enough great things about this tire... I've now been riding on two of these for ~750-800 miles and have not had one issue or flat. After a rough week of chronic flats with my stock tires (I believe mainly due to an exposed metal bead), I finally wanted the peace of mind of a renowned tough tire and kevlar bead. Being a newcomer to cycling, I was a little thrown when I pulled this tire out from it's packaging (especially after dealing with non-lay-flat metal beaded tires)--they felt flimsier than anything and seemed like they'd in no way live up to their reputation. After finessing their shape a bit, I had a relatively easy install. No harder than with my stocks...always a bit tough to pull that last bit of tire over the rim lip, but tire levers helped to make quick work of it.

So as mentioned, since putting these on I've logged near 800 miles on them and they've been absolutely fantastic. I've taken these tires over terrain sure to flatten my stock tires: potholes and rough road debris, wide-grated metal bridges, rough NJ shore-area roadways and even a pebble/stone laden construction site (yeah, don't ask...).

Still being a relative newcomer to cycling, I can't comment with any expertise on rolling resistance, stickiness or noise. Nothing has struck me as unordinary about this tire in any of those categories though, so unless you're anything other than an amateur/hobby cyclist I think these will more than satisfy your needs. Great tires, great price. I'll be back for more WHEN these finally give...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great tire, October 12, 2011
By Richard E. Welch (Shawnee, Ok. USA)
Once again, Conti has a great tire. This tire surpasses the Gatorskins I had on my bike preciously. It is tougher, stronger, and lighter. All indications show that I should get at least 3000 miles from the back tire on my road bike. No weak sidewall on this tire as with the gatorskins.

I've only had them on 2 rides. The ride quality of my bike is much better over bumbs than with any other tire I have used. Cornering is more stable than with my old Michelin or Specialized tires. It will be interesting to see how long they wear.I would say I love them right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Incredible, July 17, 2011
By Paul Vogt (Naples, Florida)
My wife and I just bought road bikes. I did my homework and bought the Continentals based on other reviews. There was an immediate and enormous difference between the stock (Specialized) tires and these tires. The ride is smoother, acceleration is easier, and the grip is better. My wife was reistant at first and wouldn't let me put her's on. I talked her into riding on my new tires and she was immediately sold.

By Sports & Tech Fan (Buenos Aires, Argentine)
I've using them on my time trail bike, from last August 2011.
I do over 621 miles a month training, and I also use them to race
All around tires. Best than many others I've tried
A good balance between rolling, puncture resistance and traction.
I noticed a difference from day one.
I've tried Conti Ultrasport, Hutchinson Equinox, Vittoria Rubino.
These are on my bike! and I plan conitnue using them.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome!, February 15, 2012
By Desmo (Palo Alto, CA)
(This review was originally on the 4000, but should have been on the 4000s so I moved it.

Tire was purchased 1/23/11 at the LBS.

2200 miles with this tire and have had NO flats. The wear indicators look like I can easily get 4200 out of this tire. Will definitely be getting the same when the time comes.

Update - 2/15/12 Tire now has 2850 miles on it and still no flats. The wear indicators are almost gone so I'm not sure how much more I will run the tire. But likely a few more hundred miles before I swap it out so 4200 miles is likely not going to happen. I am 225 lbs so I likely expedite wear.

Sad to see none are available for Prime right now. :( Luckily I have a brand new one at home at the ready.

I also put 4000s up front, that's been about 450 miles so far and it too is going strong.

Update - 4/28/12

Decided to replace the tire today. The wear indicators were gone, and I had gotten 3,230 miles out of it since it was installed last January.
I measured the thickness of the tire. A new one was 4.3 mm thick, this one was 2.3 mm. In the 3200 miles I never had a single flat. I inspected the tire carefully and while there were some external penetrations, none of them came through to the inside.

I had a spare 4000s on the shelf and I installed that. I hope to get another 3000+ trouble free miles out of that. Oh, the front 4000s now has 800 miles on it and no flats or issues there either.

I've ridden many road bike tires and have been using Continentals for several years now. In my opinion they have a better ride, more grip for cornering, have not flatted yet with them and they last at least as long as any others if not longer.

These tires ride great...would highly recommend. I was hesitant on the 'foldable' style but the price was lower, and went with it. I'm very happy...I laid them out for 2-3 days, then put them on--it was as easy as a 'clincher tire'. I might consider carrying for the next long weekend rides.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My favorite tire so far..., November 28, 2011
By Dustin D (Austin, TX United States)
My personal experience with these tires has been great. They ride firm, but that shouldn't come as a surprise. I currently have about 500 miles on my set, riden mostly in Texas summer conditions. They have proven to offer a great amount of grip, with reasonable wear. My rear tire is showing slight wear, but nothing unexpected. They have also been very durable for a race oriented tire. There have been many times that I have accidentally run over debris in the road and I have yet to flat. I often check my tires before riding and I did notice a decent cut in the rubber of my rear tire. I removed and inspected the tire to find that it did not go all the way through. I have filled the cut with glue, and have since put over 100 miles with no problems. Normally I would be annoyed to find a cut in my tire, but I must stress the fact that I have had very bad luck this season with road debris like glass and stray rocks. Tire performance seems to be one of those things that varies across the board, but I will use these as replacements are needed.

I really like these tires and I'm very, very happy with my purchase. I use them for both training and occasionally racing. They have been independently tested and are rated very well for their low rolling resistance.

- good training tire
- low rolling resistance (which is good)
- great puncture resistance I train on the glass riddled streets of NYC)
- I think you could get away with using these tires for Category 4 and 5 races.
- I got about 2000 miles out of my last set.

I'm planning on buying another pair for next year.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best Tire I've Ever Used, October 11, 2011
By Seymour H. Johnson (PHILADELPHIA, PA, US)
These tires are fantastic. I replaced a set of Bontragers with these and what a diffrence. They are very grippy and have helped improve my acceleration and climbing.

I bought them before doing a charity ride on my 2003 Klein Quantum Carbon Race, 178 miles over two days. My main reasons for the purchase was their puncture resistance and then their performance which was also highly rated. No problems with flats or anything. They roll so well that headwinds seemed to matter much less.

I would recommend these to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great choice for a road tire, September 29, 2011
By Colorado fan
A great, stable road tire that lasts longer than some competitors. Black chili compound allows tire to track and hold the road well, particularly on high-speed, downhill descents. Also recently rode on Vittorio Rubino Pros, but I got more miles out of my the Conti 4000S tires. So just bought a second set. They also seem to be tough enough to handle typical road hazards without puncturing; have ridden about 2000 miles on Conti 4000S tires without a flat. A bit on the expensive side, but I prefer to spend my time riding rather than fixing flats.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome tire!, September 25, 2011
By Jim
Great tire! This is probably the best clincher tire I have ridden with (and I've ridden on many). The grip is fantastic in both dry and wet pavement. I found that the GP4000s tires can be mounted by hand on all of my rims besides a DT RR1.1-based wheelset; these rims require tire levers but install is still not too painful.

Others have said that they have been getting 7000 mile life; I must be really hard on tires because at half of that mileage my set is close to worn per the wear dots. Maybe they will wear more slowly from this point on out? Just for reference, I'm about 75 kg and always run with tires pumped to ~800 kPaG (~115 psi).

The tires seem to be pretty puncture and tear resistant. In over 2500 miles of riding I didn't have a single flat (comparable to some of my friends on Gatorskins-and we ride the same roads). I did hit something which tore through all of the layers and rendered one completely useless, but I'm not sure any tire could have withstood whatever I hit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Amazing tire, September 3, 2011
By JennYC (NYC)
I have used this tire exclusively for the last few years now. I ride NYC streets and Long Island, roads filled with broken bottles, nails, you name it. I recently went over a broken bottle, the tire was slashed edge to edge and a big tear on the side, yet it did not go flat! What more can a city rider ask for!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good tires, April 14, 2011
By Leon S. (SF Bay Area)
Not much can be said about these tires they work. I have only had one flat in almost 200 miles of riding on these tires. Smooth ride and seem to roll better then my old Grand Prix 3000s.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Disappointing, April 2, 2011
By Avery
I was impressed by all of the good reviews but I have to say this tire really let me down. Within ten minutes of riding on sidewalk it had been bested by the onslaught of a few thorns. My other tire, a gatorskin, survived unscathed. Since I can't really change the local flora of my city I guess I will have to find a tire that can go head to head with angry plant life. Unfortunately for me, this tire was not the solution and now I'm out a large chunk of change. Not happy :(
