4.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for realistic expectations, September 15, 2010
By Bugman (Lewes, DE United States)
Everyone looking for a cable lock should already know that ALL you expect is a minor deterrent, and ALL you can use this for is to secure your front tire to the bike frame. This cannot be expected to be a primary security device to secure your bike.

For your PRIMARY security device, you need to get a Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit Mini Bicycle U-Lock (3.25 x 6-Inch), or something very close to that.

What you need in a cable lock:
1. convenience: has to have mount with easy on/off
2. small size: so that it can be mounted to frame easily (the Kryptonite Hardwire 2510 Key Cable Bicycle Lock is a perfect example of what NOT to get. Way too big and unwieldy.
3. KEY (all combination locks can be defeated just by pulling on them and turning the tumblers)
4. Advantage goes to locks that can be closed WITHOUT having the key inserted. Believe me - it's a huge advantage.

With that in mind, this cable lock fills it's role perfectly.
Small enough to fit on the frame of the bike easily. It's as large and secure as you'll ever get in a cable lock and still be able to use it. Example: I have the Hardwire 2510 also, but it is just too too large to fit on the bike frame, and is very inconvenient to use. I bought this afterwards, and it is what I will use instead, just to secure my front tire. The NY Fahgettaboutit secures the frame. It is a HUGE advantage that you can close it without having the key in the lock (UNlike the 2510). I do not agree with the criticism that you cannot uncoil it - it is as easy to uncoil this as any other cable lock. You WANT it to coil itself up into a tiny ball so that you can mount it.

Special note: the keys are very tiny, and very thin - would be easy to snap one off if you really forced it. You can get free replacements from kryptonite, but you'll want to think twice about letting your 6-year old use this lock (also because he might lose the keys).

Special note #2:
This comes with its own mount. You canNOT replace the mount with the Kryptonite EZ-Bracket Kit - it does not fit this lock. As long as you don't break the original mount, you'll be fine.

Summary: great cable lock for the LIMITED security that any cable lock can provide. Make sure to use a QUALITY U-LOCK as your primary device. I'd give it 5 stars only if it could be used as a primary deterrent, but there is NO cable lock that good.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Light Cable, June 24, 2009
By X. Ni (PA)
Thick cable but more than half of diameter is plastic/rubber. Very thin wire, parked bike in front of building with cameras. Took someone a few seconds to cut through the lock.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Does not uncoil - very annoying, April 21, 2009
By Edward Sawma (Chicago, IL USA)
This cable seems to be secure, but it is very annoying to use. It does not uncoil. When you try to wrap it around things, it is constantly snapping back at you into a coil, preventing you from stringing the end through holes or around objects. You have to really wrestle with it in order to get it wrapped around and through objects the way you want.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not secure enough, December 6, 2009
By book addict (ny)
If you live in an area where bicycle theft might be a problem, this lock is not secure enough. My Trek was stolen in less than 2 weeks when I left it locked to a bicycle rack during the day while at work. Not such a bad neighborhood. Bad luck, though!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Wouldn't Unlock, May 25, 2011
By Fortissimo
I had this bike lock for a few years, and it worked pretty decently. I live in a very low theft area, so I used it as my primary lock. But when I came out from the gym one day, I tried using my key and it wouldn't work. Not even the spare would work on it. So we had to sit there with bolt cutters and a hacksaw trying to cut it off. To give it some credit, it did take about an hour for us to cut through it. I don't know why it got stuck, maybe some kid thought it'd be funny to stick a toothpick in it. But I won't be buying this again.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike Lock, December 5, 2010
By L. E. Wilson (Ithaca, NY United States)
Good quality bike lock so far. The long length makes it easy to attach your bike to most bike racks or places. Seems strong, but a little on the heavy side. I like the fact that is opens and closes with a key, not a combination.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great key lock, January 18, 2011
By D. Appel (New York, NY)
This is a great product for what it is. The chain is very thick and durable, the lock is a simple key lock and the keys are not very robust so I can see how other users had problems with them breaking. For me it was a good compromise between a U-Lock and a weaker chain.

I've been using this lock for 9 months now, locked in front of my apartment every night overnight. So far so good.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, bad clip materials, July 10, 2011
By Brian Jetter
The lock is pretty good - basically does what the description says and has plenty of length. The clip to attach the lock to the bike, however, is extremely difficult to put on the bike - so much so that the effort bent the plastic a bit, weaking it to the point that it broke soon after. Not a big deal for me as I'm happy to carry it around the seat pole.

Good lock but someone cut the corner a bit too tight on the bike attachment clip.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy, July 4, 2011
By Jill B (Chicago, IL United States)
We wanted a nice sturdy lock for locking a bike for storage in the bike room at our condo and this fit the bill. Price here was better than we found locally and it shipped quickly. We use in combination with a U lock. The bike has been stored for almost a year now with no problems!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for Short Periods or Visible Areas, July 22, 2011
By S.V. (New York, NY)
This is a great lock for quick stops or parking in very visible areas. This is not a primary lock to secure your bike in remote locations or for long periods of time. Additionally, the mounting bracket is less than perfect. Fortunately I don't use it often so for the most part it's just decoration.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Someone Boosted my Bike, July 20, 2011
By deipnosophist (Alexandria, VA)
I locked my bike up in a secured bike storage area. It was safe for a couple of months until someone cut the cable and stole my brand new bike. Please, don't waste your money on this lock. If you care about your bike, spend some money and invest in a serious, serious lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock! Hybrid U-Lock Cable, July 19, 2011
By lazyranch
I was debating between this lock or a standard U-Lock since those seemed more secure. However, I decided on this one and have no regrets. It is extremely sturdy and I would imagine most people would have a difficult time cutting through it. Also, it is about half the weight of a standard U-Lock and doesn't clank when you attach it to your bike.

One con, however, is that the mounting bracket they give you to attach the lock to the bike is fairly cumbersome. I simply just lock the lock to my bike (there is also a velcro strap attached to it to keep the cable together!).

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase, and I can bike around safely knowing that my seat, front wheel, and bike frame are all safely secured.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Awful Lock, August 16, 2011
By Josephine Nguyen
I purchased this lock a few months ago and generally only use it when I know my bike is safely on my work property. I went to happy hour tonight in downtown DC, during daylight, and this lock was cut and the bike was stolen without anyone noticing, within 10 minutes. DO NOT TRUST THIS LOCK TO PROTECT YOUR BIKE. It can be cut in seconds. It will be cut in seconds. Your bike will be stolen. Use only in combination with a U-Lock or something more sturdy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good lock, July 26, 2011
By kebno
Feels more sturdy than most other locks I've had at this price. Looks heftier than it might actually be. Comes with a velcro strap to hold it together coiled that is useful.
I like the connecter that lets you attach it to your bike. It's a well thought out design.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Tried, tested and true...but I don't think it will always come through, August 22, 2011
By Cali Canuck
I bought this cable lock a couple months ago to lock my bike to our ground level patio. Now I know that you should not rely on just a cable lock to safeguard your bike, U-locks are definitely recommended to secure your frame while cables are a backup and should be used to help secure your tires, but the way my patio is designed I can't utilize my U-lock. Hence, I read some good reviews about this lock, it sounded pretty sturdy, so I gave it a try. Well just last week I came outside and noticed some clip marks on the cable - someone tried to cut through the cable, and thankfully did not make it through despite what looks to be a couple attempts. They were able to cut through the plastic coating down to the braided steel wire. I few strands of wire were indeed severed, and from what I can tell I bet if they were to spend another 5 minutes working on it (or were to bring some sharper clippers) they could probably make it through. Anyway, the point is that the Kryptonite lock was decent enough to prevent my bike from walking away and thus gets 4 stars (thank-you Kryptonite!), but I recommend upgrading to a thicker cable if you aren't also using a U-lock. I just bought a 3/8" Masterlock cable, and man it looks tough. Makes this Kryptonite cable look like childlike. I also bought a bike cover to make the bike a little less conspicuous (out of sight, out of mind). So far, no more attempts and I can sleep without worrying so much.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  great bike lock, October 4, 2011
By biker
This is a great bike lock. I use one everyday for my commute. I carry it in a back pack. I actually had to test how well it works, since somebody stole my keys at work. I had the security at my job try to cut it with a large bolt cutter and they couldn't. It's a great lock other than having to uncoil it is sometimes annoying.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  DO NOT BUY, October 12, 2011
By I. Futterer (Minneapolis, MN USA)
calling this this a lock must be a joke. The "cable" is mostly made out of plastic and must have been really easy to cut through. I'm sure whoever stole my bike LOVES this manufacturer for decieving it's customers into thinking their products provide any security at all. pathetic.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Cut through by bike thief, January 19, 2012
By Kristen
This lock was recently cut by a bike thief and now I have no bicycle. I do not agree that it should be used to secure your wheel to the frame - you will just have your wheel stolen that way. Better than the whole bike I guess, but what's the point? A lock that can be cut through should not used at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Useless bracket for attaching cable to bike. Lost lock 2nd time I used it!, January 13, 2012
By Greg Baker (Birmingham, AL USA)
Totally inadequate bracket for attaching the cable to a bike. I lost the lock 2nd time I used it! I bought it from a bike shop an so I thought that my fears about the crummy bracket were just my own paranoia. After all, how does it serve a local bike shop to sell a product they know is junk? A bike shop (unlike Amazon) is supposed to offer their expertise and experience as well as an assurance of quality greater than that of Walmart. Fat chance!I did not have as much trouble attaching the bracket to the frame as some have had. Attaching the cable to the frame with the included bracket was a bonehead move on my part. The cable slides and snaps into the bracket via a catch that seemed flimsy as I installed it. I should have listened to my intuition about this as the lock detached from the bracket on it's own during it's second trip. Anything attached to the frame of bike has to tolerate a lot of shock and vibration. This lock is a great example of incompetent engineering. It's as simple as that. I'll be ordering a second lock but will not entrust it to the bracket's care again. What a PITA it is to have to go to all the trouble of securing the lock myself every time I use it. If I had wanted to zip tie a lock to the bike myself then I wouldn't have bought a lock with a bracket in the first place.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  good lock, hard to reassemble, September 14, 2011
By Always Ridin' (Ohio)
I purchased this lock as I ride everyday and needed a good lock and bracket. The lock seems durable and the bracket works well. The problem is that it once the cable is unwound to use, it is impossible to get it back as it was to stay in place. I have it rewound, but have to use an extra velcro strap to keep it out of the way. Otherwise, a good product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bike lock, March 1, 2012
By Chip (West Hartford, CT)
I prefer this style of bike lock versus the solid Kryptonite U-shaped locks. This is easy to use, flexible, and reasonably priced. I wrap it under the bike seat. Nice flexible rubber coating makes not rattle at all. Recommend!
