The Pearl Izumi Tri Cycling Short is designed to perform equally well in the swim, run, and bike components of a triathlon. Made with a superior blend of nylon/Lycra moisture wicking, and quick-drying Sensor fabric, the Tri Short offers a superior fit and durability to meet the challenges of a triathlon.

With a 6.5-inch inseam, 3 inches shorter than the typical cycle short, and a unique panel design for ergonomic performance, the Tri Short is lightweight and bulk free to take you from the bike, to the road, to the water. With a triathlon-specific, reduced size Ultrasensor chamois pad, the short offers optimum support and padded protection, with minimum bulk. With quick-dry fabric on the chamois as well as the short, you will be comfortable for all elements of your workout or race. The Tri Short has an adjustable, internal drawstring closure at the waist for a perfect fit and spandex leg grippers to hold the shorts in place.

Like all Pearl Izumi products the Tri Cycling Short has a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, that excludes failures from accidents, misuse, improper care, or normal wear. The Tri Short is not recommended for use in chlorinated pools.

For best results Pearl Izumi recommends washing its products with detergents free of additives, such as fabric softeners and perfumes, because detergents with additives leave "surfactants" behind on a fabric's fibers that inhibit the technical performance. Hang dry the product or dry it on a low or warm dryer setting. Never use a hot dryer setting or use a commercial dryer as this will damage the fabric's performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best Tri Shorts yet!, January 3, 2010
By SoCal Triathlete
Third pair of tri shorts that I've owned: My first being some Sugoi's which were to thick on the padding and a little awkward to run in. My second being some TYR "Splice Male 9" Race Shorts" which had to thin of padding and the seams started to come undone after the first use.

Well that brings my to my third, the Pearl Izumi's which I've heard so many good things about online. The padding is perfect for all three disciplines. They're really comfortable to wear and I ended up using them 5-6 days a week when I was training. They were $10-$20 more expensive than my previous shorts but totally worth it with the quality of the material. When I first bought them the elastics that surrounds my legs looked a bit loose but they adjust themselves once they're exposed to water. Triathletes like myself tend to have bigger quads and leg muscles so I think thats what the manufacturer had in mind when making these.

!!!WARNING!!!
These are not entirely bullet proof and buyers should really pay attention to the label that states NOT to expose them to chlorine. I was a bit lazy and would go in the chlorine jacuzzi at my gym after swimming. The shorts held up okay for 2 months but after that they started to get a bit see through in the front and back and loose in areas. 3 months later they are still usable though...

Tips for tri-short newbies:
If this is your first time owning a pair of trishorts learn how to take care of them and prolong their lifespan for training. When you finish a nice hard workout cycling or running just wear them when you walk into the shower to rinse them off. It's best to rinse them with cold water so after swimming. You can just spray them in the sink and then hang them somewhere out of the sun to dry. Also, NEVER curl your shorts in a ball (especially wet) for a long period of time.

If you train in a chlorine pool or know that you will come in contact with chlorine (like I did), do what I am doing now:
Buy a separate pair of shorts for swimming called jammers...I would suggest getting the "Speedo Men's Race Endurance+ Polyester Solid Jammer Swimsuit". They are meant for chlorine and give just about the same feeling that the Pearl tri-shorts give in the water minus the padding. They're $36 but totally worth it as both shorts will last you a long time. Oh and with regards to the speedo jammers, be sure to order a size larger than what you normally wear because the legs are known to be very a bit tighter than regular sizing.

Overall the Pearl Izumi's are a great choice and I will be ordering another pair soon!

~~~~UPDATE~~~~
My old pair is STILL usable. Nevertheless, I decided to shop for a new pair and I'm shocked at the prices amazon has for these now. I paid $25 with free shipping on my original pair. Now I can't even get them in my size in black, and if I settled for "Shadow Grey" I'd be paying $54!! It looks like Amazon is just about sold out and all that is left is odd sizes and expensive vendors...but hey, triathlon season is in full swing. Do yourself a favor and shop around online before ordering here. Still beats paying $100 at your local store.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just ran a Half Iron in them, July 7, 2008
By Mike (Framingham, MA)
I just ran a Half Iron man in these shorts. Although they are fairly new with only two washings, they withstood a 1.2 mile swim, 58 mile bike and 13.1 mile run in rain, and I had absolutely no chafing or rubbing. The bike pad was just big enough to protect, but not so big to be noticable in the run. It wicked a way sweat and rain perfectly.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent if you know the "packaging", January 22, 2009
By Paul K. Shreeman
I bought this after running in my first triathlon in a "boxer" swimming shorts and ended up with raw thighs afterwards. First time I wore this, I swam around a lake, and rode the bike for several miles. Afterwards, my private part was rubbed raw. I realized that I probably "packaged" my parts in wrong place, probably right on the heavy-duty stitches. On my second triathlon, with my part safety arranged away from those heavy stitches, I went totally raw-free, so I am very happy customer.
2.0 out of 5 stars.  Worst of both worlds, March 3, 2010
By Anon
If you're looking for a pair of shorts for biking and running don't buy these.
I've been wearing these while training 6 days a week for the last couple of months while training this winter for a 70.3. Most of my riding has been on spin bikes and the padding doesn't help at all even with the wide comfortable seats on the bikes. The padding actually feels rougher than the straight compression shorts I was wearing. And then when I get off the bike to run--after a couple of miles they start to chafe in exactly the place they should be adding comfort.
I've really tried to give them a chance, and they aren't horrible; it's just annoying to find a chafed up spot at the end of a not too long workout (and for about $50 they probably should do more).
/ I've also taken care of them as recommended and they're properly sized.
// I know all the cool kids wear combo swim/bike/running clothes, but I'm thinking I'll just wear a proper pair of bike shorts and then take the extra 30 seconds at T2 to change into running shorts for the run.
2.0 out of 5 stars.  Get what you pay for, June 23, 2011
By R. Hardy
These are definitely on the cheap side of biking/tri shorts, and you get what you pay for. They'll get the job done. I don't have any real issues with seams/rubbing and the chamois is definitely comfortable enough. There are pieces of fabric pulling out of the drawstring holes, though, and I've only worn these 10 times or so. Also, they seem to be cut somewhat tight - I generally wear a medium, and understand tri shorts are supposed to be tight, but these allow EXTREMELY little room for... well, you get the idea.
Overall, if I was in the market for a cheap pair of bike/tri shorts, I would buy these again. Although you're money is probably better spent on a nicer pair - pay once, cry once.
4.0 out of 5 stars.  Better than expected, August 26, 2009
By Joshua Beal (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I wore these in my first triathlon - 1/4 mile swim, 6 mile bike, 2 mile run. At first I was worried about chafing from the seam running down the middle front based on another review but after completing the tri there was no chafing at all. The shorts were very comfortable and dried out quickly after the swim. I'm 5'10" 190 pounds and normally wear a size 35x30. I ordered the size large shorts and they seemed just a little long but I think the mediums would have been way to small. I rolled the waist over to make them fit better. I would recommend these shorts to others.
4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good product, April 26, 2011
Used these for my first olympic distance triathlon. Enough cushion for the bike but not too much padding for the run. Recommend these.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love these shorts, January 27, 2011
By Glen T. Lukasik (Honolulu, HI)
Granted, they don't have a ton of padding... but they are tri-shorts... no, they aren't that great for 50 mile bike rides (unless you're really use to riding that distance)... but they do help on my 20-30 mile bike rides... I like the fact that I can ride, and then run immediately after... not having to worry about a ton of padding being jammed around my butt/crotch area...would/will definitely buy again...
4.0 out of 5 stars.  Articulated Legs, December 8, 2010
By Chris
So, I'm not sure if this is the proper terminoloy, but the legs on these tri shorts are very articulated (curved to fit your body as it would be positioned on a bicycle; think gloves with curved fingers).
They fit nicely, offer a good amount of padding for a tri short and stay put on your legs. The high articulation is great on the bike, slightly uncomfortable when you first put them on and barely noticable during the run.
3.0 out of 5 stars.  Chlorine Bad, July 18, 2011
By Rangle
All the Pearl Izuni shorts I've owned fit well but they don't like chlorine. After a few months in the pool the material falls apart. The good thing is they will give you a new pair if you send them back. I've looked on the labels and couldn't find anything about chlorine so I trained with them. I washed them in cold water right after swimming but it didn't help. I got a call from the PI rep after they sent me a new pair and he said not to train with them in chlorine.
2.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Product but deteriorates rapidly, October 16, 2011
By Alan Spivak (Miami, FL United States)
I bought these one month ago and since then i have completed one triathlon and swim 100 laps in them EVERY DAY. It worked amazing in the tri and i have no complaints accept one HUGE complaint. I know it says not recommended for pool use but the shorts are literally deteriorating in the frontal area to the point that you can see me junk with the greatest of ease.
I rinse them after every swim/run or swim/bike, yet the shorts are still falling apart.
Besides that these shorts were amazing and if u don't swim in a chlorinated pool it should do well.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  They fit good, good support, October 5, 2011
By Eroc
Have only had these for one race, but i thought they fit well, good support where needed, the pad was not huge and awkward while running, i do like the pads ona bike specific shorts, but these are not bike specific so i think they worked well, flexed while running and biking, i was not pulling or adjusting while exercising with these. Overall i like these quite a bit.
3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product, but ..., September 18, 2011
By D. Brown (Dallas, TX. USA)
... the inseam, at 6.5", was too long for my liking. Pearl iZumi is a trusted brand, and makes great cycling/tri clothing products. As an Ironman competitor, I use my tri
shorts for both my bike and run portion, and as I don't like having my quads feel constricted by my short's leg bands, I prefer a shorter inseam of 5" - 5.5". These are good tri shorts, and if you like a mid length inseam, you would be hard pressed to go wrong with these tri shorts.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Worked well in sprint triathlon, August 7, 2011
By Max
I am new to the triathlons, only completed two sprints with these shorts. So far I am happy with quality and performance, I also use them for training occasionally - no problems after washing/drying.
They have a padding which ads some comfort on a bike - but you will not like your pics from behind, just looks funny ;)
By Ret.MSgt.DAVE
Found the shorts on Amazon.com late in the season, when others ran out of stock. I have owned other cycling shorts but none of them had a nice fit like these. There is comfort all around. They are NOT tight around the waist or legs. I would recommend these to anyone.
purchased these cause my lower region couldn't take the beating from the bike seat anymore. these things are great, took care of teh chaffege, and the bruising. i have no complaints, would purchase these shorts again. on a side note, i may purchase the other bike shorts that some riders are complaining make there lower region bulge, for wearing to the bar of course.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome!, June 17, 2011
By Highcard
These shorts are great for all aspects of the tri.
No chafing at all.
The cushion is a little thin for the bike but enough for shorter distances of a sprint or Oly. Don't know how it would be on a century ride.
The cushion doesn't interfere at all in the run!
Great!
4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty good, June 10, 2011
By Sideofpotatos
This set of shorts does all it claims to do and I do not even need to use any easy glide for a triathlon. However, I would recommend buying the next size up you would normally get. I used their sizing chart and ordered the size it came up with for my waist, I am a skinny guy, 6'6" at 195 lbs so I am used to needing these types of shorts smaller. They fit me comfortably in all areas except in the twig-n-berries area it is so tight that it makes the region go numb with extended wear time. This is not noticed at all during the bike ride as I am usually crouched over and my legs forward but when I hop off for the run I have to "sag" them a bit just to keep my nuts from getting pushed up uncomfortably inside. I wonder it I ended up with a women's pair of shorts even though I ordered men's! Just go for the bigger size and you should be fine.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  I really like these, May 11, 2011
4.0 out of 5 stars.  Less padded than normal riding shorts, April 12, 2011
By nkd
I give these 4 stars only because I am not a triathlete and just needed an additional pair of riding shorts. They are indeed a bit shorter (but not all that much) than normal cycling shorts - this model does have a drawstring. Padding is less than I prefer for riding 2+ hour rides, but okay for shorter rides and probably appropriate for more experienced riders and also considering they would be used for swimming as well. I like the fit and quality of Pearl shorts better than some of the other brands.
4.0 out of 5 stars.  Save them for race day, chlorine kills them., March 31, 2011
By Spartacus
Have owned 2 pairs and raced in several tri's with them. Buy these to have the very best gear on race day. They dry quickly, look awesome and are comfortable in all 3 disciplines. BUT do not train in a pool with them. They fall apart quickly in Chlorine (as the label states). I swim in jammers and change into bike shorts for training.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great all round, September 19, 2010
By Jon Reynolds (Oklahoma, USA)
Good shorts. Worked great for my first triathlon.
Like previous review, there is a bit of "rubbing" to consider especially after the swim. Placement of valuable body parts need be considered, also consider creams to be more comfortable and other options.
Great for short to long bike rides (up to 65 miles for me).
Happy sporting!
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Tri shorts, great for swim, bike, run, August 10, 2010
By T. Matz (TX)
I trained with these a few times in a chlorine pool, used for biking several times and a little for running. I just used them for a triathlon medium/sprint and they were great. No issues, holding up well so far. They have been washed 6-7 times, and look in new condition. They are comfortable for biking and even running, as well as swimming of course. They are also my favorite bike shorts I own. Just don't sit down or scrape the sides in a cement pool as the material seems it would be grabbed and ripped apart.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wicked shorts!, July 18, 2010
By tryptophan
They ran a little bit small, but were very, very nice. They treated me well for my second sprint triathlon and I shaved 10 minutes off of my time (in fairness, probably not due entirely to the shorts). They worked great on the swim and on the bike, but the way they fit my legs made me use different leg muscles during the run, I think. Overall really great, though.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Shorts!, August 17, 2009
By Daniel delSobral (Eastern Massachusetts)
I bought these shorts to wear in my first triathlon. I was looking for some shorts that would function well in all three legs of the race - the idea of swimming or running in biking shorts was not appealing, nor was the idea of biking in a swimming suit.
These shorts worked great. There was enough padding that the bike ride was comfortable, but not so much that I noticed the padding during the swim or run. I had also expected an awkward minute or two on the bike as the pad dried out, but in fact I didn't notice anything at all. In other words, the shorts worked as advertised.
The sizing seemed accurate - I bought a large, since that's what I usually get, and the shorts fit fine.
2.0 out of 5 stars.  These are bike shorts, June 13, 2010
By offcenter (Logan, Utah USA)
If you come to the world of triathlons as primarily a biker, you will probably think these are great. If however you are more a swimmer and runner, these do not feel sleek and comfortable because you have that pad in there. You don't notice it a lot in the swim but in the run it feels like you have a "load" in your pants. It claims to be quick drying but by quick they mean several hours by which time you will be finished with your sprint or Olympic tri. If you need padding it makes more sense to me to pad your bike seat a little more than to carry an unneeded pad around for the other 2/3 of the race. Since I already paid for them and used them too much to return, I just carefully cut out the pad. A partial waste of money, but I'm pretty happy with them now.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pearl iZUMi Men's Tri shorts, August 23, 2011
These are great shorts. Not too expensive, the cover enough leg where I don't feel I'm running around in a speedo, and it keeps all my STUFF comfy. I also have had some where I feel like everything is out for the world to see...didn't experience that in these. Great pair of shorts. I'd buy them again and/or recommend them.
3.0 out of 5 stars.  Ok for first tri shorts, July 29, 2011
By SBRkev
These were the first tri shorts I bought and I still use them in regular training. They are the cheapest tri short around, so I didn't expect much. The chamois is very minimal and I wouldn't want to go more 40 miles without more in between the seat and my bottom. They do sit very high on your waist - right at the belly button. The drawstring is great, but it would be nice to have pocket. Running in then is quite comfortable and compared to other tri shorts and tri suits I have, they seem to be less revealing of your goods.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  My first tri shorts, June 18, 2011
By Stephen J. J. Mount (Williston, VT)
OK, so maybe since these were my first pair of tri shorts, five stars is a few too many... but I really like them. I've worn them for training several times, and in one duathlon so far. They'll be on me for a couple of sprint tris in the next four weeks. I was concerned that the padding trade-off was going to be a problem. Though I would not want to wear these training all the time, the padding is adequate to make a 15-mile ride not too painful, and also thin enough to not feel awkward during the run. These met my needs perfectly.
By islandlover (Plymouth, IN United States)
I purchased these for my husband's 1st triathlon. I was shocked at some of the prices on this type of short so was pleased to find these reasonably priced. My husband trained in them and found them to be the perfect fit, just the right amount of padding as well.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Worked great, May 12, 2011
By Fred Singer
I bought them for my first sprint tri. Never had a chance to wear them before the event (my planning wasn't great!), but they worked like a charm. Comfortable, no chafing, just as advertised. Looking forward to using again!
3.0 out of 5 stars.  Inseam longer than 6.5", April 20, 2011
By Clifton Nolunvoid (Charlotte, NC USA)
These are nice, quality tri shorts, but the inseam is much longer than 6.5". Although I haven't measured it, I think it's closer to 9.5"
This next item isn't necessarily a bad thing, but is worth noting: the rise (the length between the crotch and the waistband) is also quite long. I have a normally-proportioned torso, and the shorts go up way past my belly button.
Also, be aware that the product tags mention that the shorts aren't recommended for use in chlorinated water...
Overall, I'd give quality 4-5 stars, but fit just 3 stars, with a combined rating of 3 stars.
4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for the money, July 29, 2010
By Jason Wilson
This was my first time buying a pair of tri shorts that were black. The gray ones were less expensive so I gave them a shot. They work fine, but they are less than attractive and become even less so after you get a good sweat going.
4.0 out of 5 stars.  Beginner triathlete pleased, May 24, 2010
By N. Kuhn
They've held up well after several weeks of use, washing, being thrown in the bag, etc. Good fit, the tie string was useless so that went away. Work well for all three events, fit nicely under the wetsuit.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Tri Shorts - Sizing Runs Smaller Than Normal, February 27, 2010
By BatmanForever (Davis, California, USA)
These Tri shorts are good quality Tri shorts that will last many years. Beware: the sizing runs slightly smaller than normal. I am 6ft 3in and weigh 220 pounds and the size XL feels a tad too small on my waist (size 38) and on my thighs. I just ordered a second pair size XXL and will keep the size XL as well. The size XL will be usable, but they feel slightly small. Have a great workout !!
3.0 out of 5 stars.  good, October 26, 2009
By win (Florida, USA)
The shorts arrived on time, it was comfortable, padding was good but not excellent, the thigh part of the short was a little small for X-large.
3.0 out of 5 stars.  Thigh seems coming undone., September 15, 2009
By Waterskiing family (Lake Lotawana, MO)
Overall, shorts are good for triathlons. They don't hold too much water and dried fairly quickly. The thigh seems though are coming undone - like the elastic quality is gone and they are starting to curl up. Very strange after 3 uses.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  No complaints., August 10, 2009
By Nick (West Decatur, Panama)
Comfortable, stretchy, light, minimal padding (hence the "tri" in the description) so it fits nicely under a wetsuit. I highly recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome product, May 14, 2009
By weekly rider (Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA)
I was informed by a seasoned and experienced rider that Pearl Izumi was the best in the market. I wholeheartedly agree! These shorts are comfortable, have adequate cushioning and DO NOT fall down. I am not a tri-athlete, but these shorts are great if you need to walk around after riding. A great piece of equipment for the average rider!
4.0 out of 5 stars.  Not enough padding, May 4, 2009
By S. Metzler
Great shorts, but there isnt much padding in the important areas. I still feel discomfort on long rides, and running with them on is more awkward than other shorts I own. But overall, good quality and come in good use.
2.0 out of 5 stars.  Too tight around the thigh, April 2, 2012
By Metro Dan (New York, NY United States)
I really wanted to like these but they are way too tight around the thigh. This cuts off circulation. I am 6 feet tall and around 200 lbs. I'm medium build so I thought it would be fine. Too bad.
5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good shorts, February 27, 2012
By Paul
I've been riding for about 10 years and have always been happy with my Pearl Izumi shorts. This is the first time I bought them online, the padding was less than others I own so I was skeptical at first. But I've got several rides in them already and even after an hour they still feel great.
The leg gripper is tight but not constricting. If you're new to buying bike shorts and waffling on spending $60 or so, remember that you get what you pay for! If you go to local retail store and buy $20 shorts, your legs and "area" will pay for it. These are worth their money, I wash and dry with regular clothes and PI shorts last a long time.
Keep the rubber side down and your helmet on.
