DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!! Not only would the key not work to unlock the bike, but it broke off inside the lock, so the spare key is useless. Only my second time using it. Got me stranded downtown. Had to take a very expensive cab back home to get my kids off the bus. I knew I shouldn't have bought the cheap one. Now I have to figure out how to free my bike. I wouldn't have given any stars if I wasn't required to.

Splurge on a Kryptonite, July 7, 2010
By Amazon Warrior
|
|
I didn't buy my lock from Amazon, I bought it from Target. However, as an Amazon user, I thought I would do a few people a favor and urge them not to buy this lock. It's a good lock to deter amateur thieves, but you're going to be in a world of hurt if a professional comes looking at your bike. Not that I'm speaking from experience, but this lock just feels incredibly cheap. It does not feel anywhere near as secure as a Kryptonite U Lock. It rattles around a good bit and feels like one or two good hits with a hammer will disable it. The only reason I bought this one is they were out of Kryptonites and I needed a lock asap as I ride downtown for work.
Another problem I found this morning was that my key would not open the lock. For a few seconds I thought I had the wrong key. I spent five minutes trying to get the key into the lock. Apparently the keyhole moves around and you have to play around with the keyhole to get back into place so you can insert the key.
Get this lock if you're on a tight budget and you need a lock asap, it'll do the trick until you can afford or have time to get a better lock. If you have the time and/or money, go get the Kryptonite lock. It'll give you more peace of mind. I work in a pretty secure building so I don't have to worry about sticky hands while at work, but I would not trust this lock to secure my bike on the lakefront while I went for a swim.

Remember to oil regularly, January 22, 2010

Its an ok lock, it did the trick for a year. Didn't oil it for a while and it seized up in the cold rain. Then the cheap key stripped as I tried to get it open. I would find a better mechanism.

Okay lock., February 2, 2011

This lock is okay for the price. The thing is if you value your bike enough to buy a u-lock maybe you should spend a little bit more money. The key for this lock is extremely cheap. Mine broke off inside my lock. Luckily for me this happened outside my apartment. After leaving my bike outside for a week I figured what the heck, lets try to get this thing off. I was able to cut through this lock with some good bolt cutters in just under a minute.

What everyone else says, December 6, 2011

It seems as if others have already said what I need to say: piece of junk, don't buy. This lock was a spur of the moment buy for me as I needed a lock, but I should have just waited. The lock will work fine for the first month or so, but after that it starts getting nearly impossible to turn. Haven't yet had the key break off in the lock, but given how hard I've had to turn it, it might very well happen soon.

Piece of Crap., November 3, 2011
By Nicki K.

This is my first time writing an Amazon review. But I felt compelled to because this bike lock is truly a piece of crap. I bought it from Walmart for about 15 bucks. It worked ok for a few weeks then it randomly broke one day when I was on my universitys campus, which is REALLY inconvenient. The problem was, it is now in two pieces. the U-part won't go back into the straight part. the key will not even turn inside of it. This wasn't expensive, either! I just was highly disappointed in the product. I had to go back to the store and purchased a cheap 5 dollar cable lock that is WAY easier to operate than this more expensive product. And plus, IT DOESN'T BREAK! I called MasterLock and they told me to mail it back in so they could take a look at it then maybe send me a replacement. Um, no thank you. They should be sending me something after their poorly made product randomly broke for no reason. I already spent enough money on this; not spending anything more to ship it out there. Please- i urge you guys to not buy this product. I dont know, but I have heard Kryptonite ULocks are better. Heck, even my cheapo $5 cable lock works better and is more reliable than this piece of crap. Save your money.

Handling was ok, but it must be very bad quality. My bike was stolen, as it was easy for the thiefs to cut the lock.

Below Average U Lock; Will Deter Inexperienced Thieves., July 17, 2011
By khc

Bought this lock at my military store, where it sells for about 12 bucks. The "ribs" on the locking bar are no longer used, and the bike mounting bracket has changed slightly [see the Master Bike Lock website for latest configuration of this model].
The model 8170D lock by itself weighs 1 lb & 15 ounces; the "maximum" locking area (inside the shackle) is 4 in x 8 in [the "U" begins to curve at 6 inches from the locking bar]. The U bar shackle is 1/2 inch solid metal (steel probably, as it attracts a magnet). The locking bar is a 1-inch diameter hollow tube made of (about) 1/8th inch thick sheet metal [again, steel]. The actual locking mechanism is an interior metal sleeve, about 1/16th inches thick, that rotates when the "disc key" is rotated...in the "locked" position, this interior sleeve has 2 "dogs" that engage 2 slots [one on each side of the U] on the shackle.
The key can only be removed when the locking bar is in the "locked" position.
According to the master lock website, this lock is made of "hardened steel" [the packaging says only that the shackle is hardened, which may be more accurate]. If you've never seen a lock like this mounted on a bike, the website also has instructions on how to use the mounting bracket. The literature/packaging has instructions on how Master Lock recommends you lock your bike.
I noticed that the locking bar mechanism [visible when the U shackle is removed] is a bit "dry," and could benefit from a squirt of bike chain lube...this could be important, as there's a lot of friction inherent in this design. Likewise, the key lock mechanism could use a drop or so of light oil. Note: the lock mechanism is fairly sloppy, and best results are achieved by FULLY INSERTING the key prior to unlocking, and ensuring the key is fully inserted while locking. The keys are fairly sturdy, and should operate trouble free if they are FULLY INSERTED [and you do some preventative lubrication].
All-in-all, this is an "okay" U lock, and it's a good value for the price. Not bad, considering that this is Master's cheapest U lock [also, this is the only Master's U lock that DOES NOT specify a pull-force resistance, nor does it have Master Bike Lock's $1000 bike-theft guarantee]. I also bought Master Lock's 6 foot Looped Cable, and will use that to secure the front wheel.

great for the price, July 6, 2011

The looks of this u lock discourages people from trying to steal ur bike. I've already used it a couple times, the only way to break this lock is with a car jack. I would totally recommend this product especially for the price of $10-$13. If this is a negative, the lock can be kind of heavy(since it's made with steel).

Piece of CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAMN IT!!!!, May 29, 2011
By Kev

It's not the lock that disappointed me, it was the crappy bracket mounting piece. The lock actually still works after nearly 7 months of wear and tear and all sorts of weather conditions. The rubber bracket mounting fastener slipped down and caused the actual mounting piece to become loose after trying to mount the bracket on to the locking mechanism, and the lock started slapping my leg in the beginning of a 9 mile bike ride where timing was critical. I had to make several stops to attempt to adjust this piece of junk while I was in a hurry to reach my destination. There was no way that I could continue riding my bike with the bracket mount swinging and causing the u-lock to knock into my lower leg during the ride, so I had to stop and take the u-lock off and place it on the handle bar of my bike to prevent further distraction and aggravation during my long and exhausting ride. Honestly, I have more confidence in building a better mounting piece at home. This was not the exact model of the brand but it looks similar enough, and it was another failure by the Master Lock brand. All I can suggest is be prepared for failure during important trips with any model of this trash. I can see already that other customers are just as disappointed as I am, and it looks like I am another customer who was let down by a company who claims to be masters of locking devices. I'd also like to add how I can't fit the entire key into lock anymore, but somehow the locking mechanism still functions by the turn of the key. I'm starting to feel like there's only a matter of time before the entire lock fails on me, and leaves my bike vulnerable to theft or no longer unlocks with the key and leaves me stranded miles away from home or any other destination where I have to lock up my bike and unlock it when I'm ready to go riding again. Use at your own risk folks, my best advice.

Its OK, August 18, 2011

For this price, it is OK, no more, no less. The carrier bracket is useless though, the lock does't stay in securely. And as far as the lock goes, sometimes you need to coax the key a little bit inside the lock to properly lock or unlock it.

My bike was stolen as a result of this product. It was destroyed using something like bolt/rebar cutter and the company offered no service. I highly discourage purchasing Master Lock NO. 8170D.

Terrible!, April 6, 2012

Do not buy this lock! Thank goodness I tested the lock before actually locking my bike to a rack because I had a very hard time getting it open with the key. You have to really fiddle with it and get the key in just the right position or it will not open. Plus, the instructions to attach the bracket to the bike were extremely confusing to me.
