Product Description:
The 2008 IZip Tricruiser Electric Trike has stability, comfort and carrying capacity in a classic adult tricycle shape with comfy saddle and high capacity rear basket. Clean electric "Twist and Go" with easy to use throttle. Top speed up to 18 mph/ 29 kph and 30-35 miles / 45-58 km range.
Proving that trikes aren't just for kids anymore, the iZip Tricruiser electric tricycle offers an ideal way to get around town without tiring yourself out. The Tricruiser is equipped with a 450-watt DC Earth magnet motor and an SLA-type 36-volt rechargeable battery, making it far cleaner than gas-powered scooters and hybrid cars. The high-capacity battery also offers a range of 30 to 35 miles per charge, so you can make it back and forth to the grocery store several times without running low on power. And once you're on the road, the Tricruiser boasts a top speed of 15 miles per hour (contingent on the rider weight)--plenty fast enough for most side streets. Is the market too far to walk but close enough that a car seems wasteful? Turn to the Tricruiser, which comes with a high-capacity rear basket that can hold everything from groceries to tools to children's toys.

The Tricruiser is powered by both the electric motor and good old-fashioned foot power, with an easy-to-use "twist-and-go" throttle helping propel you forward. The trike is also extremely comfortable thanks to the extra-wide comfort saddle. Other features include a patented Currie Electro-Drive system with speed-specific gearing, heavy-duty alloy 24-inch rims with full fenders, and adjustable cruiser handlebars with Kraton grips.

Specifications:

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bike/Great price, June 26, 2008
By Crock (New Jersey)
I did my shopping for a decent adult electric three wheeler and this bike offered the most in features and value. It shipped for free and arrived in about a week in two boxes. The instructions were clear and well written. All of the nuts and bolts were already installed and it was an easy task as long as you have a helper to hold things as you tighten all the fasteners.
I've had electric bikes in the past and this is the first three wheeler.
My first test ride was awesome! This bike actually has torque! It pulled away with no peddling at all and got up to 15-18mph. The throttle is like a twist-grip and is very responsive. The overall quality is excellent and the seat even comes with a back rest. The frame is aluminum and very strong with quality welds throughout. The basket even folds down and pops up quickly. I'll use this bike for local shopping and beer runs, because my Mercury Marquis is too expensive to operate for casual trips.
I added some headlights and a tail light and a decent cable lock and I'm very satisfied with this bike. It's lots of fun and is a great ride for adults who want to ride easy and enjoy the outdoors. It's also the best-price on the Net.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Was VERY disappointed!, July 27, 2008
By BW collector (Upstate NY)
I ordered this product after reading the other two reviews. My Tricruiser arrived and my husband and I opened the two boxes and started to put it together. Some parts were packed well, others not and we noticed scratches in the paint on the fenders. I figured I would just call Currie Technologies and see about getting some touch up paint or the parts replaced under the one-year warranty. Well...I was informed that this seller is not an authorized IZIP dealer so the warranty is VOID. No way would I have purchased this product if the description stated no warranty came with it!! We packed up the parts (better than how they arrived!) and I contacted Amazon.com to arrange pick up and issue a refund. I called Currie back and asked if there were any authorized dealers in my area and there were a couple but still too far away for us to drive to. The rep mentioned that I could order on-line from Thesuperkidscom (one of their most popular authorized dealers) and I did for just $889.00 with free shipping and no sales tax charged. My Tricruiser is on the way and I am waiting for my refund from Amazon.com...I'm not sure this review follows "the guidelines" and I do hate to give a negative review because I have had many happy purchases through Amazon.com but this sure wasn't one of them.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Disappointed, but dealing with it, September 9, 2008
By dmoola (Seattle, WA)
I would discourage people from buying this bike. The old phrase "you get what you pay for" definitely applies here. It's a 'good' bike in many ways but disappoints in many others.

What you should know when you buy this bike:
-It's loud
-it's rickety sounding
-replace the tire tubes when you get it, they are thin and mine have all popped within the first few weeks.
-This bike is 1 speed, there are no gears so it feels like your peddling in 10th gear all the time, which is damn near impossible with a bike this heavy unless it's flat or downhill.
-if you lock up the tires the back chain tends to come loose making peddling impossible
-keep a wrench and screwdriver on you, i'm constantly adjusting and tightening
-tighten and watch the back fenders. they tend to move and then get caught up in the wheel. mine were almost torn off several times.
-the help/support number that is stuck all over the bike is someone's personal phone number.
-the battery i received seems to be a dud. the on/off switch doesn't work at all.

Basically, save your money and get a more expensive bike from a local bike shop. I ride this bike 20 miles a day and wish i had saved up and got something else. My coworkers all did and love their bikes.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions. I may be slightly jaded but will give you honest feedback.. dmoola@gmail.com

4.0 out of 5 stars.  What a ride!, July 2, 2008
By Nathan Stone (Tennessee)
Wow, the ride is great. I live in a very hilly area and the power takes me right up some pretty steep hills. I use it to shop, ride it to the drive-in window at fast food places, and ride just for fun around the neighborhood. Everyone gets such a kick out of seeing this new form of transportation.

I work at a school about 2 miles from my house and I will take this to work after summer vacation is over. I have had the bike for two weeks and use it 3-4 times a day. No telling how much gas I am saving. I am really pleased.

I had a little trouble putting it together. The owner's manual is for other bikes and scooters in the manufacturer's product line.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Electric Trike, August 1, 2008
By Andrew J. Jensen
This is my second adult tricycle. My first one is a 2008 Torker Tri-Star Tricycle. This trike weighs about 95lbs, which is a good 50lbs heavier. This is pretty common on electric bikes. The battery is removable and weighs about 25lbs, just by itself. This added weight does make that first peddle a bit of a chore, unless you use the throttle. Once you get going, it's pretty peppy.

I wound-up switching out the seat, because it really wasn't that comfortable. The new seat and post cost about $35. I've heard the 2007 models seat was a bit more comfy. My trike arrived in two boxes and was in pretty good shape. There were some scratches on the fenders, which another reviewer also mentioned. The grey plastic battery holder was also cracked, but not too badly. I contacted customer service and they replaced the parts.

There was some confusion with customer service, because there is more than one company that sells on Amazon. Those other companies are not covered by the warranty but Currie Technologies is covered by the warranty. When you call customer service, make sure to inform them that you purchased it from Currie Technologies via Amazon.com. The customer service was great and they even registered my trike over the phone.

They informed me that either Home Depot or Lowes sells blue touch-up paint that exact shade. They weren't sure which store it was, but it was one of the two. I intend to bring my new fenders in, and get a bottle, incase I need it later.

The trike is very well made, and has solid spot welds throughout the frame. The tires are large and the basket is great, because it folds-down.

It accelerates very rapidly, and that can take some getting used to. I'm being extra careful around turns, probably more than I need to. There are front and rear hand brakes, but no coaster brake. I think earlier version may have had a coaster brake, but this model does not. It is only one speed, but the throttle more than makes up for that. Going down a hill it can easily reach speeds of 20+, and about 15-18 on flat land.

The manual sucks, but I had a local bike shop assemble it for me, and it was pretty cheep. I highly recommend you pay someone to assemble it, because a common problem with trikes, is that the rear wheels aren't properly balanced and the trike doesn't ride smooth. It's also worth the extra money to have them goo the tires, so you don't get a flat.

Amazon has recently raised the price another $50, and I've heard really good things about this super kids website from the company. They apparently have lower prices too and are covered by the warranty. You may want to compare the prices, before you buy.

This trike does use a lead-acid battery, and it should last about 300+ charges, which can be anywhere from 6 months to 4 years, depending on how often you use the bike and how well you take care of the battery by keeping it charged and out of cold or hot weather. A replacement battery from the company costs $220, and they said they intend to carry this particular battery for quite a few more years. I kinda wish it was lithium ion, but I'm sure it would cost a whole lot more.

Overall, I'd recommend this trike, if you're interested in an electric vehicle. Otherwise, I'm also very happy with my Torker, which looks practically the same, only isn't electric.

**UPDATE**

Three days after writing this review my front tire got a flat. Appearently the innertubes on this trike are pretty thin. For about $7 a tire, you can upgrade to much thicker innertubes (about 3X as thick). It was pretty easy to fix, and well worth the upgrade.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  lemon, October 14, 2008
By Joey Hess
This is a lemon, and it's potentially unsafe.

The first time I tried to ride my tricruiser, its controller fried itself, going up a very short (20 foot) hill. The motor was on at full to go up the hill, and remained on at full down the other side. Letting go of the throttle did not stop it. The safety feature that's supposed to make the brake stop the motor failed. Running beside the bike and trying to restrain it did not stop it. It was stopped only by running into, and right up the side of a hedge. An automobile with this failure mode would never be allowed on the road, but electic bikes are basically unregulated, so ..

After this, the controller was burnt out. Currie does has excellent tech support, and they diagnosed this and sent me a new controller, but I had already given up on it. Never again.

Other issues included: The housing around the battery pack is plastic. It arrived cracked. Currie did not have a replacement. Two bolts to attach the rear fenders could not be found. As noted by others, the motor is loud, the construction doesn't feel very solid. Also, the seat is not very well made; mine bent the first time I sat on it. (I'm under the max weight for this bike, but not a lot under.) The motor is controlled by a throttle, but does not have "pedelec" mode, where you get an automatic electic assist when you peddle.

Also, be aware that assembling this is a big job. The back end has to be bolted on, and then the drive chain has to be taken apart to be attached to it. This requires special tools, or a bike shop.

Finally, issues with trikes in general, from the perspective of a new trike user: You need to be aware it doesn't ride like a bike. You have to unlearn how to ride a bike to steer a trike. Road camber can make it tend to run off the side of roads unless you constantly steer it back. It's a pain to get through narrow doors, and the back end is very heavy, so if you have any stairs, forget it. It's awkward to walk beside and push. It has only one gear.

I gave up on this as a lemon, and bought a two wheeled electic, which I'm very happy with. I'll miss the enormous carrying capacity of a trike, but super-large panniers can carry quite a lot too.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  old age relief, August 30, 2008
By Leon Hoste (PT PL BCH NJ 0872)
I searched for this item as I did not have any idea of products. I tryed locally in NJ for a source. I no longer drive. I am dependent on family to shop, travel all on their valuable time .
Unit was delivered on schedule and in prime condition. I had my grandson put the unit together. I then had a professional check out the unit . COMENT BY PROFESSIONAL "TOP QUALITY UNIT" It is NOT A POWER ADDED TRIKE AS MOST ARE
I live in Point Pleasant Beach in Ocean county I now can shop on my own. the basket is a good size. I have used the unit with power. the charger works well. prefer the speed and length of charge.

I ENCOURAGE ANYONE WHO HAS THE PROBLEM OF INDEPENDET LIVING TO CONSIDER THIS UNIT . If I can do the manual if needed. think Im 85 yrs. It would have been a breeze at 75. I AM FREE

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wow! You gotta get one., January 18, 2009
By Bruce (Southern New Jersey)
I bought this tricycle for my wife for Christmas after doing extensive research on the web. She requested a tricycle to help excercise our Husky. Originally she just wanted one that he could pull her down the road on. Now beings we do not have a team of Huskies, I was concerned over the single speed tricycles not being able to meet the task so I started looking at multi speed units. I found it hard to find one that came with good reviews and they were not cheap. I happened to come across this tricycle when looking for reviews on the others. I liked the idea and though there were mixed reviews, decided to give it a try.
Well, I'm here to say that we couldn't be happier. What a great tricycle! Ours came promptly and with no damage as others had mentioned. I got a few of my buddies together and within an hour or so we had it together and operating. This one did come with some instructions on the tricycle assembly, though they were a little tricky to understand. But if you have a little experience with bicycles you will be able to get it done. My wife was pleased when she saw it and was even more excited when I explained what she was looking at. She instantly took the dog for a walk. It worked perfectly, though we have to get our Husky used to it. It does make a whining noise when operating the electric motor, though no where as abusive as some others have claimed. The construction seems strong and sturdy, though the rear fender mounts have something to be desired. It even handles well with me on it and I am at the limits of the trike! Unfortunately the weather and it getting dark early have kept us from using it as much as we will, but each time we have had it out, it performs flawlessly. We have basically used it on paved roads that are flat or with slight inclines. But to get up my driveway with it, you have to climb a 50' incline and the bike has no trouble making it up under electric power. Guess I better get front and rear lights for it so we can use it more.....
So, if you are thinking about buying this tricycle, I say GO FOR IT!!! You will be the envy of everyone in the neighborhood.
Bruce

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, with caveats, January 15, 2009
By C. Gregory (Winter Garden, FL USA)
My Tricruiser arrived in December. Negatives first:

1. I strongly recommend professional assembly of this tricycle -- even the professionals had difficulty reading the manual.

2. Most adults will probably want to upgrade the seat, which is not that comfortable. My local bike shop had better available seats, but purchasing and installing a better seat may run you an extra $50. Just warning.

3. The battery is very difficult to remove and replace, especially if, like me, you are disabled. This is probably a more appropriate product for people who are able to bring the tricycle to a place where they can directly plug it in for recharging, rather than removing/replacing the battery. Part of the problem is that the battery weighs a tone, but also, pulling it out requires pulling a spring that is difficult if you have weak hands or arthritis.

4. The tricycle weighs a ton and will bounce a lot on any bump -- don't plan on carrying fragile things in it. And bear in mind that if the battery does give out, this thing is a menace to pedal without the battery assistance.

Good stuff:

1. The throttle system is incredibly easy to use and the motor is very effective -- and quick, especially good for crossing roads at green lights. Like another reviewer, I easily got the tricycle to the 15 to 18 mph range. You can pedal and just keep the throttle light, or let the thing zip about -- I do the first just to ensure that I won't run out of batttery power.

2. The seat easily adjusts to accomodate shorter people (like me).

3. The cargo area in the back is actually a lot larger than it looks in the picture -- you can easily put in a week's groceries or other items, although I wouldn't put anything fragile in there -- the bike has no springs.

4. No balancing required on regular surfaces (sidewalks, paved bike trails). (This trike will not run well on uneven surfaces and may topple.)

I'd strongly recommend this as an alternative transportion for adults like me no longer able to drive or balance a bicycle or two wheeled scooter. It's been great for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Need Owner's Manual and Detailed Assembly Instructions, July 28, 2008
By Dean F. Niedernhofer
As a brand new owner and assembler of the 2008 IZIP Tricruiser Adult Electric Tricycle, I recommend IZIP develop an owner's manual, with detailed assembly instructions. The owner's manual that was sent is for the two wheeled version. I was informed that there is no manual for the Tricycle yet. A Tricycle specific manual with pictures would really save the customer a lot of time and give confidence in assembling the product.

Thank you,

Dean Niedernhofer

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great alternative transportation, September 1, 2008
By Timmelmik (Iowa)
This item is well-made and working great. It does require assembly by someone better than myself, and it is heavy. This is one motorized item that does not require an operator's license to ride on the streets of a small town; thus, it worked perfectly for my aging father who no longer has a license. This gave him back some independence, boosting his spirit. I recommend this product!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  assembly, not user friendly, January 6, 2009
By toddy (smith river, ca)
Had to take my trike to a bike shop.Printed quick instructions were not very legible. One of the bolts were stripped and had to be replaced and the chain was too short and had to be lengthened. The bike runs well but rattles.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  We bought two. One for me and the other for hubby., September 5, 2009
By MsBluebells
We were happy with the delivery and the quality of the trikes. I have to admit that my husband is an engineer and likes to tinker. If you have no or little mechanical aptitude I would recommend that you have this done by someone with experience at this sort of thing. But stay around and help in assembly and I think that will improve your riding experience. I had a difficult time starting out riding the trike. I had assumed it would be easy to ride. I had to go through some learning experiences. I felt very unstable as it was not like riding a two wheeler. But my husband who had experience on a dirt-bike had no problems at all and enjoys the terrain challenges. I am very afraid of falling off because of semi-disabilities I would have a hard time getting back up. But overall the experience has been fantastic. We have a park nearby and it is wonderful getting out and about. If you have riding areas nearby I can not think of a better solution. If you have no balance problems I would recommend the electric two-wheeler. Please buy all the safely features such as a bicycle helmet, horn and side mirrors. The trike is a thing of beauty. Get out and enjoy the planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love to cruise neighborhood, September 18, 2009
By Frankie D. Cole (Davenport, Ia)
I've had one bike in my life(I'm 66yrs old) and I was looking for something to get around on. I started to get a reg or electric bike but was diagnosed with neuropathy and was afraid if it got worse I would have with balance. I bought this and I love it. Besides running errands I like cruise around the neighborhood in the evening when people are sitting out after dinner. Driving a car I never knew How much I missed. I haven't tested the range but I'm not depending on 30-35 mi. because of my big body and is quite hilly so i wouldn't go over 10 mi away from home fora round trip of 20 mi but would knows! If I had one complaint it would be the rear fenders because they kept getting caught so I took them off.If you want to get around get it. you'll love

3.0 out of 5 stars.  It is OK, but a hassle, October 27, 2009
By Runnicle (AZ)
It was a hassle to assemble, and is a hassle to ride on gravel, open ground or side-sloping pavement. Unless you're quite mechanically inclined, get it assembled by someone who is. It does great on paved roadways, and even hills, but it is VERY unstable on gravel or on any kind of slide slope. If you think that three wheels are more stable than two, you'd be wrong, maybe DEAD wrong. So, to be safe, simply resign yourself to the fact that it can never be used off-road. On the open road, though, it performs as advertised and as you'd expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better than i expected, June 20, 2009
By Wood Dale Larry (Illinois USA)
I PURCHASED THE IZIP TRICRUSIER ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO. I was a little concerned about putting it together from reading the reviews but there was no problem did it by myself in about an hour the only reason i followed the easy to read instructions was so I didnt jump ahead and have to take something apart to put it together. It rattles and makes a little noise but its not a cadilac I didnt pay for one contacted currie the manufacture very nice. So far its better than I expected. The only draw back might be it went up $450.00 since I bought it Must have been in the wright place at the wright time
