3.0 out of 5 stars.  A little disapointed, November 18, 2010
By kjszeliga (Milton, Florida, US)
After receiving mt THOMPSON Elite seatpost I must say I'm a little disappointed with a few details. Whilst certain of it's structural integrity, I find the finish on the clamping end of the device sorely lacking compared to other high end seatposts. Yea, yea, I know "best post in the world", "a gorilla couldn't bend it", "I'm afraid someone's going to steal it" 5 Stars, 5 Stars, 5 Stars, Blah, Blah, Blah. All of the aforementioned is, I'm sure true, but one thing really bothers me, the clamp head LOOKS CHEAP. I know it is fabricated from drop forged pieces, but nothing is finished and polished before painting and it LOOKS like cheap, WAL-MART grade bike, stamped steel. I know it isn't but it LOOKS that way. The actual seat tube is obviously machined from a single piece of aluminum and is beautifully made, but the lack of edge sanding on the clamping pieces is unforgivable on a component of this price range. Add to this the bolts, I'm sure they are high grade, high stress rated bolts and all that, but the plating on them (cadmium or something?) again, makes them LOOK like junk. I'm using the post to mount a SELLE ITALIA Flite saddle and because of it's slender profile and hole in the top, it doesn't hide much of the post. YUCK, very un-elegant to say the least. Look, I'm not a "Bling Junkie" or anything, but for almost $100, I don't think having it pretty and strong is asking too much. I wonder if I sprung for another $50 and bought the "MASTERPIECE" edition if this issue would be better addressed? I know it's made in the good 'ole USA, but I also wonder if a $100 post made in China or Japan would have the same issues?
I'll keep this one, but next time I'll try something different...

5 STARS for reputation and strength
2 STARS for finish and appearance
3 STARS overall

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Quality material and engineering, October 7, 2010
By wood butcher, music fanatic (Arlington, MA USA)
Strong well-designed seatpost. Got this for my vintage Trek set up along with a new saddle. Admittedly, a lot newer than the vintage gear on it, but the machining and look is great. This is obviously not some cheap throwaway, but a quality bit of machine shop work. Also, it needs to be functional, and this post has a terrific machined top that makes angle and lateral adjustment of the saddle a breeze. The one it replaces relied on a couple of set screws to push against all of the force of the rider in the saddle. Always managed to wiggle loose, and was never easy to tweak the saddle position. Not so here.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Light, high quality, well thought out design, November 14, 2010
By CD (Japan)
Refurbished my old Panasonic bike that had a 26.6mm seat tube. Not very common. Could only find a quality seatpost in that size from this maker. It cost a bit more than the others, but I think it was worth the money. It is much lighter than my old seatpost, it is made of high quality material, and it includes a numbered scale that allows you to set precisely the angle of the seat on the post. Well thought out design. Very pleased with the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Seatpost, August 16, 2007
By Justin Schmidt
This seatpost is very supportive. I am a large sized rider and a stock seatpost just doesn't cut it. This piece was recommended to me by more than one bikeshop!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  The Thomson Elite Seatpost With Setback is Thoughtlessly Designed, August 7, 2011
By Brian
The Thomson Elite seatpost with setback is a poorly designed seatpost with zero forward angle tilt. It is obvious that all Thomson did to "design" this seatpost is kink an angle into the tube of the Thomson Elite seatpost without setback and then call it good. What the "designers" at Thomson failed to realize is that if you angle the tube back then you have also changed the angle possibilities of the "infinitely" adjustable seat clamp at the top of the tube. The major problem with this failed geometric design is that when the seat is tilted all the way forward it is parallel to the ground making a forward tilt past parallel a physical impossibility.

Thomson missed the mark when they designed this seatpost. If you want a seatpost that has any forward tilt adjustability at all then this is not the seatpost for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Thomson is perfect as always, March 23, 2010

No better mountain bike post can be had in my opinion... Amazon is the best price I've seen on these anywhere, especially with prime shipping.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Exactly what son wanted, September 16, 2010
By dreamstreamr (on the road, USA)
We bought this seat post as a present for my son. He told us the specifications so our shopping was easy. It arrived well-packaged, and fit exactly as intended on his bicycle. He is a rugged biker and this has held up, so it deserves the rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very solid seat post, August 22, 2011
By Joseph Schmo
Thomson has an established reputation for quality bike parts especially seatposts and this model certainly represents it. Very rigid with absolutely no flex. I am a 190lb rider with camelback and gear and it rides very well. Clamping mechanism also is far superior to my old 1 bolt design. Use it with a wtb speed v seat.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Thompson straight seat post, November 25, 2011
By gdo
It is a Thompson. What more needs to be said. In this era of set back seat posts, this is a great alternative. Really improved my bike fit. The service from Amazon was great-the seat post arrived when they said it would. Very satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Thomson Setback Seatpost, February 16, 2012
By Traveler
This is my second Thomson setback seatpost and I have almost 20,000 miles on the first one so this one was bought based on that experience. It is light, the saddle angle is easy to set and it's secure once set. The only downside to the setback post is that you need about 3-1/2-4" of exposed post to stay above the "kink" that creates the setback. The straight version has no such limitation but I needed the setback. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent choice, November 4, 2011
By Kian
This is a very light seatpost and it seems to me to be the strongest I've ever seen, it's what you expect from a company that only does seatpost and stems

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is a Great Seat Post, April 11, 2011
By AstralBob
This is not only light, built strong, looks great but adjust so easily. Remember the one bolt set up? This actually has a gage that will allow you to make micro adjustments. The post itself is slightly ribbed. It holds the finish well. Very happy with this post.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best seat post in the class, April 10, 2012
By lloydd14
Bought the straight version of the elite seat post over the setback. I wanted to be able to bring the saddle a bit more forward then I could with the setback post I had. Great quality(USA designed and manufactured). Fair price(amazon was $30 cheaper then my local shops). Lastly the way you adjust the tilt and fore-aft placement of saddle is so simple and easy yet holds strong. Highly recommend the Thomson Elite Seatpost. If you have the extra cash, spring for the Masterpiece. It's even lighter and just as strong. One last comment: just make sure you get the right size post for your frame.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Mission Accomplished..., April 5, 2012
By Dustin D (Austin, TX United States)
I purchased this seatpost for purely cosmetic reasons. The post that came on my bike was a cheesy carbon-wrapped aluminum post. It functioned perfectly, but I always felt that it dragged down the appearance of the bike. From that perspective, my new Thomson Elite post has made me happy.

Functionally, the seatpost was noticably lighter than the one it replaced. To be completely fair, the Thomson was much shorter than my old one, but it is also machined down much more liberally. The fit and finish is superb. I found no flaws in the machine work and everything fit together exactly as it should. The saddle mount is of a two bolt design and seems very secure. It takes a little more time to adjust, but it's not difficult. Since installation, I have not had to touch the post for any reason.

In a nutshell... Would I recommend this seatpost to everyone? Probably not. There are other seatposts that will do the same thing for much less. However, this is a great option if you're one that pays attention to detail and also happen to be in the market for a pretty light, pretty strong, aluminum post. And if you're not in a hurry, the prices fluctuate on Amazon so you can pick it up for a fair price.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Slip Slidin' Away, April 2, 2012
By tomc (Winthrop Harbor, IL United States)
I didn't buy my Elite at Amazon as I got a better price elsewhere. It's lucky I did as while I waited for delivery I kept reading various postings on the internet bike forums about Thomson's Elite and Masterpiece slipping despite users greasing, not greasing, carbon paste, no carbon paste etc. Still there were plenty of happy users who reported no slippage. I noticed quite a few titanium frame users having trouble. I whipped out my vernier caliper and my Litespeed Ultimate showed , luckily, I thought, exactly 27.2mm. Further reading and research and I found that right on Thomson's site (it isn't that easy to find) they state that their posts are indeed undersized, all of them, by .05mm. So your 27.2 Thomson is really a 27.15mm post. In fact here is the link to Thomson's PDF so you don't take my word for it. [...] (well, Amazon deleted the link but you'll find it if you look.)
That's fine if you're using it on a steel frame or use a steel collar. In my case I wanted to replace an older American Classic that slipped in my frame because it mic'd exactly as small as Thomson's in my caliper as per Thomson's website spec. I pulled out an old Campagnolo Super Record seat post and it mic'd at exactly 27.2. I put it in my Ultimate, attached a saddle and went out for an hour with some marking tape and had not one iota of movement. When the Thomson came I mic'd the American Classic and put that against the Thomson, no surprise, they were the same. Though the Campy wasn't what I had in mind , it doesn't move. Luckily I never put the Thomson in so it will remain new and I'll resell it as that. The place I bought it from has a restocking fee policy and that, with return shipping would immediately cost me $20. I figure I can do just as well selling it as new and take a bit of a loss. Moral of the story. Get a vernier caliper and don't assume anything. Measure. Shame on Thomson for not being more forthright with their sizing policy. So I give them 1 star. Maybe it is a great post. I'll never know. It doesn't fit and they give no real heads up. Mark your post sizes as what they actually are Thomson.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A true piece of quality workmanship, May 3, 2012
By T
I felt like I might regret paying top dollar for a seat post. But, Thomson seems to be in a class by itself. Today UPS dropped of my new post and I could not wait to get home and install it. I'm very impressed with quality of this item. After looking at it and installing it, I can see why it is expensive, but worth it. The picture does not do it justice. It looks like any of several that are online.

Along with my new Avenir saddle, this seat post gave me an awesome ride on the trail this evening!!
