Really? No unlocking instructions?, June 28, 2009
By John Marshall (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
|
|
There was nothing included to tell me how to initially unlock the product much less how to change the lock to a different combination. The standard "0000" is not the solution either. This is especially strange given the extensive and informative instruction on how to the install the mounting bracket - it even includes pros and cons of different mounting positions.
Avenir does not have an official web presence, so, if this happens to you, there is no help. Maybe this was a single time oversight with the packaging of my lock. Maybe someone thought it would be funny to reset the starter combo and remove the instructions. I don't know. All I do know is that I now have a useless lock to return.
UPDATE - I decided just for kicks to see if I could figure out the initial unlock code, starting with "0000" and dialing numbers one at a time. Turns out is was "0005". Again, I hope this was all the result of prank. If not and you find yourself in the same situation as me, maybe this is your answer. Good luck!

Easy lock-up, February 19, 2009
By J. L. Taylor (Oregon, USA)
|
|
This set has a midweight cable attached to an easy to use (and reset) combo lock, and includes a handy clip that attaches to your bike and allows you to attach, or detach, the unit with the click of a button. While I wasn't looking for this feature, I am so glad it has it. No more winding the cable around and around the seat stem to secure it. How handy. The cable and lock feel substantial but the whole thing is really pretty compact for its weight. All in all, just what I was looking for.

Great Lock! Easy to change combination., September 12, 2009
By weaver-k (Atlanta, GA)
|
|
I was a little nervous about getting this lock initially because some of the reviews I read indicated that it was hard to figure out how to create your own combination since it did not come with instructions. Not only did the lock come with instructions, they were extremely easy to follow and I had the combo set in about 1 minute. It is a very sturdy lock and will be great when I ride to the store for some quick grocery items or to the library for a book. I am very glad I got this strong, affordable, easy to use, lock!

Coil Combo Cable Lock, June 25, 2008
By fellow bike rider (NY)

Very impressed with the Lock, although a little tricky installing since it didnt come with directions. On the plus side it is a resetable combination lock, so you can set it to whatever you like. The mount is also pretty cool because you can attached the lock either vertically or horizontally.

Good product and price but., August 1, 2009
By Russell Martin (Northern California)
|
|
PRO: Good product and price, prior to this product I bought a Bell '8mm' coil combination cable lock 8 months ago much like this one from Wal-Mart for about $15 and the combination part literally fell apart. Wal-Mart would not refund my money. With my experience with Amazon.com, they are super.
CON: the only drawback on this 12 mm combination coiled cable is that it is quite heavy and difficult to uncoil.
I believe most woman would have a problem uncoiling this cable.

Nice Lock!, September 28, 2009
By R. A. Cozens (Carson City, NV)

I like this lock, for the ease of use. The combination tumblers are smooth and the way the lock mounts to the bike is slick and works great. My unit came with instructions, so unlocking it and re-setting the combo was a piece of cake. I would recommend this product.

Looks and feels quite strong, July 9, 2009
By Krzysztof Kaminski (Earth)
|
|
If someone wants to steal your bike he can do it in a second. This lock - as any other lock - will only slow a thief for a brief moment. The cable is long enough to lock your frame, front and back wheel, but if you take the front wheel with you, the thief would have to carry the rest of the bike on his back. Certainly this will not prevent the thief from stealing your bike, but could make it a little bit more inconvenient for him. If a thief wants to steal your bike, he can take it from under your butt and there would be nothing you could do. My rule - never leave my bike even with six locks on it.

This lock worked out for me. It is small enough to be portable, but long enough to be used in most situations. My only complaint is the cheap plastic holster thing that is supposed to mount to a bike frame. Mine broke the first day.

Cut through like cheap plastic, April 4, 2011
By Sonya (New York, USA)
|
|
Is there a warranty? I live at a dorm and the bike is parked at my dorm. My bike has a good Kryptonite lock for its back wheel and frame, but the front I locked with avenir. Somebody apparently walked into the courtyard of the dorm and cut avenir even though the security was around. Bike was not stolen... Ironically. But now I have to get a second kryptonite - thats 100$ for locks for a 200$ bike.... very stupid.

It broke my heart, July 12, 2010
By Sophie

I spent nearly 20 bucks on this thing, but guess what?! The combination just failed to work after barely one month! It's ridiculous, I had to cut this lock and buy another one! and you know what, it was very easy to cut it too, any bolt cutter will do the job. I guess it wont do much if some one is really interested in your bike. Dont ever waste your money on this thing!

Excellent Lock, but weak plastic holster, April 28, 2011
By Michael Green
|
|
This is a light weight cable lock, best used for securing tires or for short term security.
As such, it functions well.
The adapter to attach it to the bike (without the need for coiling around the seat post) was a nice touch, but it broke within 3 weeks of purchasing... and the lock fell off my bike.
I'm not sure why you would manufacture a medium weight metal lock with a plastic holster unable to hold the weight.
Buy something else if you don't plan on wrapping the lock around your bike.

Good lock, but the mounting bracket is worthless, April 21, 2010
By Southern Canuck (Kansas City, MO)
|
|
I used the included mounting bracket to attach the lock to my bike, and within 3/4 of a mile, the plastic bracket broke - dropping my lock in the middle of an intersection. Part of the plastic holder just split right off, rending the bracket completely useless. Since then, I've just been wrapping the lock around my top tube, and locking it across the headset to keep it from sliding around.
The lock itself has served me well, and it really isn't hard to set the combination (despite what other reviewers said). But, just plan on an alternate way of carrying it, because the plastic mounting bracket doesn't last.

Disappointing, November 15, 2009
By Ian F. Finnesey
|
|
The lock that this replaces was 10 mm. It was thicker than this. Including the plastic sheath, this cable is 11mm thick.
That said, the locking mechanism is very nice. It turns smoothly, numbers click in place, and it locks and unlocks with no problem (I still oiled it regardless).
Another annoyance with it is that the coils are really damn tight. Maybe that means the steel is harder...that could be a good thing, but I'm not sure.
Regardless, it'll do. I only use it at home where I can't easily use the (total overkill, 5 pound monster) u-lock I bought at the same time as this

Please do not buy this lock!, August 29, 2011
By improfound
|
|
I found it very easy to set the combination on this lock. That is the only good thing I have to say abut it. I bought the lock right before a weekend trip. After driving for two hours to a beautiful bike trail, I discovered that the lock would not open. I had two bikes on a rack on my car, and had them locked together, so there was nothing I could do. I had to drive 2 hours back home and cut the lock open.
I should have done my due diligence, and looked at the reviews for this lock carefully -- others have had the same problem. I just looked at the star rating, which was pretty good at this price point. Anyway, given what seems to be a high failure rate on this lock, please think VERY carefully before buying.

The lock wouldn't open., June 27, 2011
By Precipice
|
|
This lock wouldn't open. I've had this lock for about a week. It worked all right at first, but today it just wouldn't open anymore. I'm lucky I only used it to tie my skateboard to a pole since I was able to wrangle it free after about 20 minutes. Otherwise I would have had to acquire a lock-cutting saw or scissor. Even when the lock did open though, I felt this lock was too big. It's relatively long and heavy -- why do you want it so long as to be able to wind around a pole several times? The combination piece is also quite big. This might be the sort of lock you use to tie up 3 bikes. Next time I'm just going to get a smaller shorter cable.

Bike Stolen; Decent Lock, May 2, 2011
By R. Micallef (Brooklyn, NY USA)
|
|
The lock itself is fine. Convenient, quick to operate, long enough to be practical. I used this lock for a year or two when I was just running errands during the day, and had no issues. It was way easier than carrying a U-lock with a chain or cables around everywhere.
I occasionally left my bike out on the street at night with this lock, and it wasn't an issue until last month. The bike was locked up two nights in a row at the same place with this cable and was stolen. Not much else to say about it other than don't depend on this thing at night in bike-thief-ridden areas. I live in Brooklyn, so it's not shocking that my bike was a target being in the same spot with a cable lock two nights in a row. But the bike was stolen from a pretty high-visibility spot, so I think a beefier lock probably would have presented enough of a challenge to a thief to not want to mess with the bike and risk getting caught.

Great lock at great price, October 22, 2010
By Lorraine S. Stehn (Aransas Pass, Tx United States)

Amazingly, the front bike seat of our tandem bike was stolen right out of our shed by some hooligan. Had to replace the seat with attached handlebars for $200! Put this bike combo cable lock on to keep the seat locked to the bike, and the cable is long enough to allow us to lock up the bike as well when we ride to lunch for chicken burritos.

Solid, good mounting bracket, great price, August 19, 2010
By Destroyah (LA, CA)
|
|
First you must know that ANY cable lock is just a deterrent. I would never use a cable lock alone if locking up a bike outdoors over night or daytime in high theft areas. Cable locks are good for quick trips to stores, cafes and such. Not long-term security. This particular lock is about as thick as cable locks get, the mounting bracket works (I've ridden over 15 miles in one sitting on often bumpy roads with this lock and it stayed attached and out of the way) and the dials are easy to move and set. I also love that it's pre-coiled and keeps its shape. If I was going to be leaving my bike locked for a long time I'd use in conjunction with a U lock but this is about as good as you'll get for strong, light, easily stored, & cheap. It's also great not to have to carry extra keys. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Cheap and usless - Bike Stolen, April 18, 2011
By ANguyen (Fairfax County, Virginia United States)
|
|
I had been using this lock for about 9 months and then had my bike stolen recently. It was great before - lightweight, latch made it easy to attach neatly to bike, and cheap. Then this past weekend, I went to the bike rack in the secure parking garage of my apartment building in DC that I had locked my bike at for months to only find my bike gone and my Avenir lock cut in half. I've heard great things about the Kryptonite U-locks from friends and am considering that for my next lock. If you have an expensive bike, it's not worth it to save a few bucks on a cheap lock.

Absolutely unreliable!, August 25, 2011
By carlos esquivel

Lock didn't work! I initially set my combination following the instructions and closed and opened it a couple times and it worked fine. Next time I'd tried to open it didn't work. I'm sure I didn't forget the combination I'd set before because I'd written it down. I tried returning to the original set up (0005) and that didn't work either, after hours trying different combinations I went online to see if there was some fix to this problem and didn't find any support, so I went to check the reviews of this item in Amazon.com, and I found many entries with the exact same problem. This product is worthless!

Worked well for a while, then it broke., October 17, 2011
By SimplyBrilliant (NY)

I was really pleased with this bike lock for about a year or so. Other than once when my combination accidentally got changed somehow (though it was only a shift by one number, luckily), I haven't had any problems at all. I live in Philadelphia most of the year, where bike theft is common, but I've never had any issues with it.
This afternoon, however, as I was going to lock my bike up, the lock literally just fell apart in my hands! One of the springs must've come loose, and all the dials and everything slid right off. I'm just glad this happened when it was I and not some petty larcenist who was trying to take it off. Next time I'm going to try a U-Lock and see how that fares.

A good accessory, July 28, 2011
By lubger

I cannot attest to the protective qualities of this cable lock (since I'm not exactly stealing bikes every day), but it looks sturdy, and the quality appears to be adequate. I especially like the clamp which allows you to attach the cable to the bike's frame for transportation (eliminating the need for a special bag or a backpack).
One thing I didn't like is that the cable came with no instructions on how to change the code (I believe I'm not the only one who raised this issue among customers).

Good lock - Iffy mount, June 30, 2011
By Dave (So Cal)
|
|
The lock is great. But the mount is kind of iffy. The tubes on my mountain bike are fat, so there's only one spot I can mount this, right below the seat. That doesn't leave much room for the mount. Because of the shape of the lock, I can't mount it too high, because it will hit the top tube.
The other problem with the mount is that the red release button activates a single round pin in the center of the bracket (can't see it in the pictures). That pin is really thin and I doubt it will hold up very long.
So when the bracket eventually breaks (just a matter of time), I'll just have to wind the lock around the top tube like every other lock I've owned. No big deal.

Lock seems good, holder is not, October 29, 2010
By G. Little (Los Angeles, CA)
|
|
Packed this up for return 15 min after getting it after the plastic collar that holds the lock on the bike failed. There's a hole that the locknut fits into that's supposed to keep it from turning but when I got the bolt mostly screwed in (but still loose), the nut stripped the holder and started turning in the hole. It was recessed so I couldn't get a wrench in to hold it so couldn't get it off or tighten it down. Finally got it off after a struggle. For those who don't plan to use this with the holder, go for it. If you plan to use the holder, think again.

Cheap, affordable, easy to use lock, October 18, 2010
By Victor

Out of the box this lock is easy to use with clear instructions. The lock seems pretty sturdy for temporary use, at most I would trust my bike is safe for a couple hours. Downside is the bracket to hold the lock on your bike isnt very useful, and the lock comes pretty stiff so it can be hard to lock the entire bike at first.

Very good lock, mount needs some tweaking, October 2, 2010
By Miles
|
|
I've had this lock for a few weeks now, and I really like it. The large dials are nice and the whole thing feels high quality, and its nice that you can set your own combo. The coil is a little bit thicker than my old lock, which possibly makes it a bit more secure, although I wouldn't trust this lock (or any coil lock for that matter) in a place with high crime or where it would be left out for a long time.
The mount is a nice extra feature, I had a bit of trouble getting it on my bike (had to pull out the seat post) and then the adapters were either too loose or too small, so I ended up putting a loose one on and tightening it down as much as I could, it holds pretty well, but does move around a little bit during a ride. Also, the screw that tightens the mount sticks out at the front of the mount, so when I put it on my seat post it would sometimes scrape against my leg as I was riding. A bit annoying. It is very convenient, though.

Quality, Affordable Lock for 1 or 2 bikes, September 2, 2010
By Steve (HOLDEN, MA, United States)
|
|
This lock is very solidly constructed. It's hefty and strong, with dials that rotate very easily. Changing the passcode is very easy, despite what some previous reviewers say - I managed to set it to a custom combination in around 30 seconds, no problem.
My fiancee and I go for a lot of bike rides together, and this lock can easily handle securing both of our bikes - even if there's no bike rack and we have to get creative about how to lock them up (around a tree, for example). If you are locking up three or more bikes, then this may not be big enough - unless you plan on always having access to a bike rack.
The price is right, and this is a quality product - if it meets your requirements then I doubt you will be disappointed!

This lock works fine, and the bracket for the frame of my bike was handy and worked well, but when I got a new bike, I was unable to get the bracket off of my old bike, so it was left behind.
UPDATE: I had the lock cut while it was locked to a rack in my parking garage. As everyone is probably aware, these are not foolproof.

By Garrett (Topeka, KS)

I don't use this daily or anything, but it has always been reliable. The code changes and stays as what you want it to be, it's a pretty solid gauge for the cable (still can be cut, like literally any bike lock) and lock enough to stretch around most anchors. I never used the bike mount or whatever that idea is, though. I threw it away right once I got it so I cannot be of any help for that.

Just right, May 25, 2011

Bought this for my wife who has a hard time to do anything on her own; I was surprised to see that she figured out how to set the combination herself and had no issues whatsoever. It's a good length and seems to be good quality.

Avenir Coil Combo Cable, May 12, 2010
By Steven W. Stuart

Easy to set personal combination. Easy to lock and unlock. Only reason I gave just 4 stars is that the coils are a little hard to unwind. But I would recommend this product.

very disappointed, December 17, 2010

The very first time I used this lock - it would not open! I originally bought this because I liked the idea of being able to set my own combination... so I set it to the last four digits of my phone number to make it easy to remember... tried it several times and it "worked" great... but as soon as I actually put it on something to use it - it would not open! I tried and tried, even tried the default setting - but it would not work. I finally had to cut it off! I'm going to try to get a replacement or return it but haven't figuered that out yet. I'll write back and update...

Doesn't even work, May 10, 2012
By Groove (Petaluma)

I can't even use my new Avenir cable lock. I carefully set the combination according to their instructions (I'm an engineer), and it wouldn't open. The default combo won't open it either. My Amazon return window closed and I didn't keep the packaging or paperwork, so I'm stuck with a piece of useless junk.

AWESOME, April 17, 2012

Works really well! Keeps my bike safe, and allows me to change the combination freely. Only thing is that the holder doesnt fit on my bike, but I compensate for that by wrapping it around my bike's drink holder.

Great so far, March 14, 2012

I bought this lock mainly based on price, reviews, and product description. I love the mounting brackit. Offers several size and directional options. Seems pretty sturdy and allows you to slide the lock in from 4 different directions.
The cable is pretty substantial (which is why I bought the 12mm diameter), and is easy to manipulate through the bike. Goes back to original shape easily when I went to put it back on the bike. So far so good. I will update later. Combo is easy to set with included instructions.
Would recommend after initial uses.

Easy to Use..But Lost My Bike, March 29, 2012
By RandomBuyzzzz

I used this lock for over a year. I live in an area where bike thefts are quite rare. I usually bring my bike inside of my apartment on the weekends. As I started to get more negligent with my bike, I left it on the bike racks outside my apartment more often.
The lock itself is really easy to use. What I liked about it was its length that can stretch around all types of bike racks. I didn't use the bike mount because it seemed tacky and was hard to remove. The lock is only good if you can protect your bike...which is why this one fails.

Quality, Affordable Lock for 1 or 2 bikes, September 2, 2010
