Love 'em!, August 14, 2008
By Bikeler (Minneapolis, MN USA)

|
I purchased two Avenir Metro 2.0 Shopping Panniers and am very pleased. They are the perfect size to hold grocery bags. I use reusable cloth grocery bags but they work great with regular paper grocery bags and plastic bags as well. Besides trips to the grocery store, I use them to commute to work and to go to the beach and park with my kids. They work great to hold my shoes, lunch, beach towels, toys, etc. They are very easy to attach and they stay secure. The interior zippered pockets are great for holding the keys to my bike lock, my garage door opener, extra sunglasses, etc. The panniers also fold up easily while attached to the bike when you don't need them. Very convient and easy to use and priced well. I highly recommend them!

Functional, but required some tweaking due to boneheaded design, August 16, 2009
By gman33 (San Francisco)

I'd just got a pair of these delivered and was leaving Trader Joe's with two big bags of groceries, and I wasn't 10 feet down the road when my heel caught one of these panniers and everything went flying. Fortunately, I recovered all my stuff undamaged, and didn't cause an accident. I'm no rookie when it comes to panniers. I rode my bicycle fully load
ed cross country some time ago and I can't say I never lost my packs, but in 4k miles, maybe 2-3 times. The panniers have tension straps that are adjustable, but the straps are cheap and come from 2 angles. On my old panniers, the tension strap (singular) was vertical, and worked just fine. The clips that go on your rack are too wide, so I'll probably either have to find new ones or cut them down to size so I can fit them further back. Another beef is that the panniers rise above the rack, making it hard to bungie down other a lock, or other stuff. I'd rather have the weight pushed against the rack than the plastic sidings of my panniers. Makes no sense. I wish this company had taken the time to think through their product. I'm giving it 3 stars generously because assuming they don't fall off any more, they should serve some use, and at least you don't have to zip tie the goofy looking metal cage packs others are using for groceries. My guess is that since their isn't much competition in the pannier business, there's little incentive for intelligent design, let alone innovation. Too bad.

Terrific shopping bag, August 21, 2008
By J. Black (Pittsburgh, PA)

My wife and I use two of these with the Topeak baby carrier rack. They are fantastic! Lightweight, easy to get on and off, sturdy, and can hold a lot - a very full standard canvas bag will fit in each one (or two gallons of milk). With the shoulder straps, you don't even need to bring a separate bag to the store. It also has two regular handles along the long edges.
It attaches with two rubber-coated clips on top and an elastic bungee that you clip down near your rear axle. Takes 5 seconds to put on or off.
Perfect for trips to the grocery store whenever weather will allow. When snapped "closed", you can still slip a bike lock or letters into it and they'll stay secure. The bottom has a sturdy piece of plastic to keep it flat, and the sides have support rods so your stuff doesn't move all over the place.
Only drawback is it's not waterproof - the sides are a mesh and the top is wide open.

So-so panniers, December 7, 2010
By John Everard (London)
|
|
This pannier basically does the job, and is not expensive. But it is not particularly well made. The hook which is meant to hold the elastic taut when you put it onto a bicycle is split into two (I think this is deliberate rather than a product fault), which makes it quite difficult to hook it on. With other panniers of the same design I can swing them up against the bicycle for the hook to catch and then drop them down onto the rack to engage the metal clasps, but with this pannier I have to bend down by the bicycle and coax it on. The metal clasps are fine with my (Planet Bike) rack, which has quite a slender rail, but I doubt they would hang easily on anything much thicker. For all that I have used the pannier often, put the seams under real pressure and found that they have held, and found that once you get the pannier on the bike it will stay there safely.

Very flexible; carries a lot., February 1, 2010

Best carrier for the price I found. Can squeeze a lot of groceries in it. I did lose one though unknowingly. A car passed me and i thought it hit something ... that was the noise of my pannier falling off my bike. Didn't realize until I got home. oops; my bad. But I wish there were a way to more snugly attach to the bike rack.

great for errands!, May 29, 2009
By Miss Crispy (Iowa City, IA)
|
|
I use mine to carry lunch box/books/laptop (in its own bag) to and from work, and to pick up groceries. It's got a padded strap that makes it easy to carry in and out of stores, and it clips on and off a bike rack super quick, no matter how much or little stuff is in it. It's super handy and makes using your bike for errands that much easier. My keys, garage door opener, cell phone, and wall all fit easily into the zippered pocket on the side; there's another open pocket beneath that one. You can pack a lot into this little guy and it's so much easier to ride with than a messenger bag, IMHO.

ok but cheap snap button broke after 6 times, October 18, 2009
By Robert Callahan

I actually really liked this bag. My foot doesn't hit it while pedaling and it holds a pretty good load of groceries or whatever. I was disappointed when the button snap which holds it in it's collapsable state broke off after I snapped it the 6th time

Great commuter bag!, April 24, 2011
By Gretchen Ericson (MEDFORD, OR, US)
|
|
I recently purchased a commuter bike with a heavy duty integrated rack and have had a hard time finding a pannier that fit well and stayed put. I was a bit skeptical when I received this bag, because it doesn't look very sturdy, but it has worked well so far. It is simple to get on and off the bike, and I like that it folds up easily with the side snaps. The only drawback is that it doesn't have a top flap to protect the items inside from our rainy Oregon weather. Overall, a great item for the price.

Great value for short shopping trips around town, September 10, 2009
By J. B. Meenaghan
|
|
This bag is easy and useful. Very easy to attach to any of our bike racks. Has been used by myself and my husband. The only problem is that our heels tend to strike it when pedaling, because it's square, rather than being cut away on the front like our regular panniers. The hooks that attach it to the rack are spaced differently than on our regular panniers, too, and because of the design of our racks, it forces us to place it more forward on the rack - we are not able to move it further back to avoid hitting it with our heels. This may not be a problem for everyone - with a different rack design, it could be mounted further back.
Still, we really like it. Since we just use it for short trips around town for a few items at the store or farmer's market, it's not a huge problem. It's a great value for the price, and works better for groceries than regular panniers because nothing gets squashed.

It's working great for my needs, July 20, 2010
By tilturt

I'm please with this shopping pannier. I'm not an avid biker, I just use it for going to the store or farmers market or taking the kids to swim practice. This pannier is very useful and I use it more than I thought I would. I would have given it 5 stars but the metal support poles used to keep it open seem a little shorter than they should be so they keep slipping out or their support. It doesn't really affect it's use but it could be designed a little better. Also, it only has a handle on one side. It seems it would have been easy to put a handle on both sides so it could be carried like a shopping bag since I don't use the shoulder strap. Overall I like it and would recommend it.

Perfect for shopping on the bike, July 3, 2010
By NYC_rich (Manhattan)

Easy to mount, easy to remove. Good shoulder strap. Heel clearance is not a problem if you mount it as far back on the rack as you can. Considering that you can spend double the money for the same thing, this is a great buy.

Leave the car at home!, December 31, 2009
By D. Edwards
|
|
These bags are great. I have been using them for about a month, and I have not taken my car to the grocery store since. I bought two of these and have never hesitated to buy something for worry of it not fitting in the bags. Each pannier, fits one of those reusable shopping bags nearly perfectly. The largest load I have carried so far includes a gallon of water, 4 large cans of soup, 2 half gallon cartons of OJ and about 10 lbs of various things from the store. It was no problem fitting these things into the bags. I have discovered that my body's weight limit may be reached before the bag's limit is. Strongly recommended.

Works great on my bike, October 29, 2011
By Bovie Muff (Chicago, IL)
|
|
I have an electric bike conversion with a double layer rack on back with the battery in the middle layer. This pannier fits perfectly on this type of rack so it's not anywhere near my heel like some reviewers seem to have a problem with. The bag was a little heavier than I thought it would be but I think I wasn't being realistic. Unlike another bag I looked at this one has a metal bar on both of the top long edges so this way any groceries will be held tightly in. The shoulder strap is even very durable. At this time I don't have anything bad to say about this and it does its job perfectly and for a great price too. Just be leaning against your bike when you put your groceries in this thing since it'll make your bike really lopsided.

Holding Up, November 11, 2011
By AKS
|
|
I purchased this pannier for my son after the bottom tore out on the Blackburn pannier he was using. This pannier is less expensive and is not as well made as the Blackburn but that actually works in its favor. Both panniers have a plastic bottom with very rough edges that can tear the material. The difference is that the Avenir is not sewed in so we could cover the edges with tape to keep it from tearing the material. We are very happy with this pannier but the reason I only gave it 4 stars is because the hooks don't fit too well on the bike rack. Otherwise it sets up very well and is foldable. I would highly recommend this pannier to someone who needs a less expensive option.

Avenir Metro Pannier, April 20, 2012
By smartypantsbooks
|
|
I live in an urban center and use my bike like a car: to commute, run errands, visit.....pretty much comes with me wherever I go (unless to the opera or +20 mile trip!) so a place to put things is very important. I've used a variety of bike baskets, and they all were problematic - until now! The Avenir Metro Pannier is THE PERFECT PANNIER. The size is ideal for a grocery bag and the solid bottom is key for stability. Love the safety stripe for night riding, and (I'm a girl) when it folds up it's very neat and discreet, doesn't junk up the line of my cute bike. This pannier is very well made (will endure many years of carrying/stowage), with snap closures (I've worked with velcro in the past and it is not a good closure solution) and a long shoulder handle should you wish to leave the contents in the basket and carry all over the shoulder. Plus, there's a sweet "secret" pocket tucked inslde the pannier should you need to stash the key to the lock or other items. It is truly ideal - congrats to the designer/manufacturer! If you're torn about which one to buy, look no further!

One of the strap buckles broke., April 10, 2012
By Ed lover (Yo!MTV Raps)
|
|
Despite Avenir's claim, I think it's rather cheaply made. there are two buckles so that you can tighten the hook. When trying to tighten it, it snapped...it's a really flimsy piece of plastic. It fell off my rack too while riding. I didn't trust it so I didn't have anything but a bag of clothes in it anyways. If you're looking for a light duty pannier, then you can probably get away with this, but IMHO, it's too cheaply made.

Pretty good grocery pannier, March 10, 2012
By Bryan
|
|
I purchased one pannier to test out and then a second after I decided I liked it well enough. I use them to buy groceries, run errands and take stuff to and from my office.
I removed the shoulder straps, and I don't really use the small inner pocket. I've never had a problem with these coming off, except once when I was carrying my bike up stairs and turned the bike over too much.
The panniers ride above the rack, so it would be difficult to carry anything else on the rack.
I haven't had anything fall out, even with groceries sometimes overflowing. Then again, my commutes are on the order of a mile or two.
A few things I dislike: 1) The pannier uses two rods that fit into small plastic pockets for support. I find these to be a bit of an annoyance. 2) No lid ( not that big of a deal ) 3) No security of items left on bike ( but could any pannier address this? )
Anyway, I've had them for about 6 months and given them a bit of abuse and so far they are holding up pretty well. I have never used any other panniers, so I don't know how they would compare to others. That said, I'd still recommend them.

Broke on day one, May 21, 2012
By Kings Mountaineer (CA)
|
|
The first day I got this, something (don't know how/what) got caught while biking and everything went flying. The metal hooks that hang the bag to the rack bent. I continued to use it but over the ensuing few months, the whole thing started to bend and eventually, bag began to rip where the bottom panel of the bag met the material. So now, after about 6 months, the bag is really a mess. I would not get this brand again. My previous shopping pannier lasted years. This one did not even make it to one day!

No problem with heel strike: positions of hooks are infinitely variable, May 23, 2012
By K. C. Chan (Cambridge, MA)
|
|
I got the pannier from the mail today. It looks durable.
I had some serious heel strike issue with this pannier on my road bike. Fortunately, the hooks are mounted by nuts and bolts (not rivets) on a thick piece of plastic on the back of the pannier. I was able to move the pannier up and back by drilling four holes. I didn't have to buy any new tool.
