5.0 out of 5 stars.  Still satisfied after two years, October 16, 2008
By Skeptic
My wife and I have used these for two years, one large set and one medium set. During that time we rode 500 miles across Germany, commuted daily to work, and I just completed a 1,000 mile trip through the mountains and across NC to the sea. Earlier I had a different brand (Trek) which used an elastic cord to fasten to the rack. I found this unsatisfactory, as the cord stretches, allowing a loaded pannier to swing and sway. The Avenir uses a strap that locks tight with a plastic friction piece. It doesn't look especially strong, but has never failed yet. I also appreciate that these panniers are quite lightweight, unlike some other brands that are recommended by full-time bike tourers. These panniers are not waterproof, but they are water resistant. The price is reasonable, they are fairly well-made, and the design is good. If you plan to tour for months at a time through all conditions, you might want something stronger; otherwise, these are a good bet.
NOVEMBER 2008 UPDATE: Based on my recommendation, my son just bought a pair of the large panniers, and reports that the design has changed. Now they incorporate an elastic strap! So my comments above appear obsolete. However, my son seems satisfied with them thus far on his daily commute.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great small panniers for commuting, November 30, 2008
By Be Active (MO)
I purchased the small Avenir Excursion panniers (1464 cu in) after having to return the larger model (1700 cu in) because my heel hit the bag, even with the bags pushed all the way back on my rack (Blackburn MTB rack). This set is small enough that my size 13 feet do not hit, even when the bags are stuffed full. The small model does not have as many features as the large, but there is ample space for clothes and toiletries on one side and shoes/lunch on the other. I really like these panniers for commuting and recommend them for people with larger shoe sizes.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Commuter Bags!, July 1, 2010
By gat0r
I purchased these bags to go on a Delta rear bike rack on my Felt Speed 50 for my daily work commute, and I have not been disappointed.

The individual carry handles are a good feature, and allow me to use one or both bags, both separately or connected with the hook-and-loop strap enclosure. As one reviewer posted, the securing strap on the back is elastic instead of an adjustable pull strap, but it does feel well built and not flimsy.

I can fit my work clothes and shower items in these bags, and the bags are vertically adjustable to fit more items, as well as being water-resistant (although to what extent, I'm not sure, I have yet to use them in rainy weather). I also use them to bring my stuff to the gym when I cycle there. I highly recommend these bags for the commuter or light traveler, as they hold a change of clothes and extras very well and seem built to last.

My only criticism is that I cannot center the bags on the rack or my heels will clip the edge of the bag, which could just be the way the rear rack sits on my bicycle, and the simple fix is to place the bags a few inches rear of center. Again, this may just be the design of the bicycle in relation to the size of the bags, especially given that these are small bags.

Definitely a five star rating, especially for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Product, August 24, 2010
By Travis M. Scott
I got these through Amazon for around $50. They are about what one would expect for the price. The build quality is good, not amazing, and they have worked great on daily commutes. They have more room than they appear to have and the definitely stay on the bike well (others I looked at had problems with them coming off and causing accidents). The mounts work well and are adjustable, they come on and off rather easy, and the handles velcro together to make a single carry handle. I put a change of clothes (shoes, socks, pants, belt, shirt) and my lunch in them every day and it all fits. This cargo just about fills them up. I haven't used them in rain yet (we are in a drought) but imagine that they would withstand light rain pretty well.

Overall, they are worth the $50. Designed and built well, I would recommend them.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  small panniers, August 20, 2010

While the Avenir small panniers are exactly what the ad's explanation is, I now wish that I had gone with the larger set. It does hold my Dell laptop - but just barely.

I've used these for grocery shopping on the back of my hybrid for over a year and they've been fantastic. They've made commuting and shopping by bike so easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great package for the money, October 1, 2010

These packs are great. Straps right on any bike rack out there and they are waterproof. I wish I had ordered a tiny bit smaller bags as my big size 12 shoes don't quite fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good size, easy to remove/attach, September 27, 2010
By M. J. Haegert (Grand Rapids, MI, USA)
We had looked at several different brands/types of panniers, and even purchased a slightly different model, but that model didn't work because our heels hit the panniers as we rode. This model does not have that problem; we wear size 9 shoes and there are still 3-4 inches between our heels and the bags. Also, these panniers could be positioned closer or farther from the pedals as needed. They are wonderfully easy to attach and remove, with handles for easy carrying. They fit a gallon jug of milk in each easily, along with even more items of various sizes.
One note of caution: You will need the right sort of bike rack to fit the panniers on the bike (or else you will need to be creative). We found that we needed bike racks that had a little bend in the metal near the wheel, enough to catch on the panniers' lower hook to keep them snug.
Overall, great buy! Well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Commuter bag, October 3, 2011
By Mike A
I purchased these bags for my commute to work. They are the perfect size for my intended purpose. I can fit: a change of cloths (including rain gear), pair of shoes, laptop, bicycle repair tools, and some other random things. Mounting and dismounting is extremely easy (takes about 5 seconds)and when they are mounted they feel very secure. My size 10 feet have plenty of clearance when peddling. I have used them on drizzly days and everything inside remained dry.

I am 100% pleased with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Simply Perfect, September 30, 2011
By Dan
This is simply perfect for my commute, I tried 2 different kinds of pannier already from local LBS and ended up returning it because they are either too big, not sturdy, or very hard to install.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Worth It, September 23, 2011
By Luke
Well worth the money. Local bike shops were offering this price for only one pannier, so this is a very nice deal. It is very easy to put on and take off, making it great for regular commuting. Haven't tested it in rain yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  great panniers, February 21, 2012
By g.parks
The perfect size bag for basic storage needs when bicycling. It won't hit your feet when pedaling (I wear size 13 shoes and I have no problems) The material appears to be pretty durable. Its super easy to install and the reflective strips work well.(reflective strips are made by 3M) One side of the panniers can easily hold a standard bicycle helmet and a water bottle with room to spare.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Made my bicycle a true sports utility vehicle, November 5, 2011
By Photo buff (Palo Alto, CA)
I move around town runing errands, checking out material at the library, or going grocery shopping on my bicycle. I also like to take long bike rides on weekends.
These versatile Avenir Excursion Panniers make my bicycle a utility vehicle. They are lightweight, sturdy and incredibly roomy when fully extended. The 'small' in the description is a misnomer. I have carried full-size watermelons in them. On weekends, I dedicate one pannier to carrying an extra sweater, a wind breaker and two 32-oz thermos bottles that keep my drinks cool. In addition to the pull string, the panniers have a hood over the top. I have not used them in the rain and thus cannot rate them on how water-resistant they are.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Avenir Pannier Set - Great Value For Money!, November 5, 2011
By Ian B. Cooper (Silver Spring, MD, USA)
I bought a full set of these panniers (large panniers, small panniers, handlebar bag, rear rack top bag) in 2010 and use them for occasional grocery shopping and long distance touring. I have packed them full of gear to a point that would have tested the seams, zippers and straps of even expensive bags, yet these bags have taken the punishment very well indeed. So far the bags have shown no wear at all and still look and work the same as they did when I first put them on the bike.

With the amazingly low price (you get both rear panniers for what other inexpensive pannier manufacturers charge for a single bag), even if they do fall apart in a few years, I'll be able to buy a brand new set to replace them and still not have spent the money I might have spent on an expensive set of bags that might not have lasted any longer than these.

The only problem I've found with this set is with the rear rack top bag, whose mounting system is really cumbersome. It's still a good bag, and it can be made to work well with a little sewing skill to reposition the velcro straps.
